Thailand’s mixed doubles team of Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai scored their second straight win to remain unbeatable in group A competition of the BWF Finals in Guangzhou on Thursday.

The pair was put to the test by Briton Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith before prevailing 21-16 21-19 to secure a spot in the semi-finals. They will play the last round-robin match against home favourites Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong of China in the battle for the top position of the group.

In women’s doubles, Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai beat Gabriela Stoeva and Stefanie Stoeva of Bulgaria 21-16 21-18 to stay in contention group B after losing to Lee So-hee and Shin Seung-chan of South Korea 14-21 8-21 in the first match.

However, Thai singles players were far from success in their second round-robin matches. Ratchanok Intanon lost her steams in the third game and went down to 2017 world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-14 11-21 14-21.

In  men’s singles group B, Kantaphon Wangcharoen suffered his second straight defeat as he was outclassed by reigning world champion Kento Momota of Japan 18-21 6-21. The Thai No 2 was knocked out of the competition despite having one more match remaining.

India’s P.V. Sindhu pulled off a shock at the badminton World Tour Finals on Thursday as she fought back to defeat top-ranked Tai Tzu-ying for the first time in over two years.

Sindhu sank to her knees at the end of an exhausting 14-21, 21-16, 21-18 victory over the Taiwanese in 62 enthralling minutes in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.

The 23-year-old, a silver medallist at the Rio Olympics in 2016, faces Zhang Beiwen of the United States on Friday looking to make it three wins out of three in Group A of the $1.5 million end-of-year showpiece.

“Each point was hard fought,” said a relieved Sindhu, ranked sixth in the world.

“There were long rallies with good strokes. She was very deceptive and I had to be ready for her strokes.

“Even though I was trailing in the third game I didn’t lose hope and I kept fighting.”

It was a disappointing day for Taiwan as men’s world number three Chou Tien-chen also lost.

Chou was on the end of an 18-21, 21-11, 21-14 defeat to South Korea’s buoyant Son Wan-ho.

There was no such trouble for men’s number one and world champion Kento Momota of Japan.

He is in ominous form as he looks to put the seal on a breakthrough year and swatted aside Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen 21-15, 21-7 for a second win in a row.

China’s Shi Yuqi, one of the main threats to red-hot Momota in the men’s draw, dismissed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia, 21-8, 21-19 in 37 minutes.

Thailand coach Milovan Rajevac must find a way to lead Thailand into at least the round of 16 in the upcoming Asian Cup in order to secure his job, according to Thai football chief Somyot Poompanmuang.

The Serbian coach has been in a vulnerable situation after Thailand, as five-time champions, crashed out in the AFF Suzuki Cup semi-finals on the away goals rule to Malaysia.

Rajevac, therefore, has his last chance to plead in the Asian Cup which will take place in the United Arab Emirates from January 5 to February 1.

“The condition is he has to lead the team to a better result. That means the round of 16,” said Football Association of Thailand president Somyot. “By doing so, he will pass the test. If the team goes further, he is lucky. But if not, we have to on separate ways,” he added.

As two-time defending champion, Thailand failed to reach the AFF Cup final for the first time in eight years after a goalless draw with Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur and a 2-2 draw in the return game at the Rajamangala National Stadium.

Meanwhile, Rajevac yesterday revealed his 27-man squad for the Asian Cup and it consists of four key internationals: Chanathip Songkrasin of Consadole Sapporo, Theerathon Bunmathan of Kobe Vessel, Teerasil Dangda of Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Kawin Thamasatchanan of Oh Leuven.

Players will start training from next Tuesday and will play a warm-up match with Thai Honda, a local League 2 team, on December 26 after which Rajevac will trim his squad down to 23 players.

“We need a not-too-tough game to test the tactics and test each player,” he said. “Initially we planned to have a warm-up with Nepal but unfortunately they were committed to a local league.”

The Thailand players will fly to UAE on December 30 and take on Oman as their final warm-up before the Cup.

Thailand, in group A, will open their campaign with India on January 6, then with Bahrain on January 10 and the host on January 14.

The top two teams in each of the six groups plus the four best third-placed teams will progress to the round of 16 knockout stage.

Meawnhile, forward Mongkol Tossakrai announced his retirement from the national team after he was not included in the Asian Cup list. The 31-year-old said he will focus on his career with Army United from now on.

Jakarta –  American John Catlin emerged tops in his marquee pairing by opening with a six-under-par 66 to share the first round clubhouse lead with Qualifying school graduate Sungho Lee of Korea at the BNI Indonesian Masters presented by Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN), PT.Lautan Luas.Tbk and Bank Mandiri on Thursday.

Lightning activities around the Royale Jakarta Golf Club led to the suspension of play at close to 4pm (local time) before officials decided to call off play for round one about an hour later.

62 players including defending champion Justin Rose of England will resume their first round at 6.20am (local time) on Friday morning. Rose is at five-under through 14 holes.

Playing alongside Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and India’s Anirban Lahiri, Catlin showed the form that led him to three Asian Tour wins this season when he marked his card with seven birdies and one bogey to set the early pace at the Asian Tour’s season-ending event.

With only his tied-14th finish in Chinese Taipei as his best result on the Asian Tour this year, Lee is determined to put up a strong showing to end his year on a high at the US$750,000 event.

The 31-year-old Korean is currently in 95th place on the Habitat for Humanity standings and will need a huge lift to finish inside the top-62 and save his Tour card for the 2019 season.

Philippines’ Angelo Que meanwhile returned to familiar surroundings in the best of form after playing in Japan for a large part of this year.

Apart from a bogey-five on 16, the three-time Asian Tour winner showed his commanding form by signing for a 67 to stay one shot back of Catlin and Lee.

Like Que, tournament drawcard Stenson also posted a 67 to put himself in contention in his tournament debut.

Irish parliament votes to legalise abortion

The Irish parliament on Thursday passed legislation allowing abortions for the first time, following a landmark referendum earlier this year, a move hailed by Prime Minister Leo Varadkar as a “historic moment”.

The new legislation permits terminations to be carried out up to 12 weeks of pregnancy — or in conditions where there is a risk to the life, or of serious harm to the health, of the pregnant woman.

It would also allow terminations in cases of foetal abnormality which could lead to the death of the foetus either before or within 28 days of birth.

“Historic moment for Irish women. Thanks to all who supported,” said Varadkar, who supported the referendum in May in which 66 percent voted to overturn a constitutional ban on abortions.

Some 170,000 Irish women have been forced to travel to neighbouring Britain for abortions since 1980.

Ireland is a predominantly Catholic country but the influence of the Church has waned in recent years.

The change means Malta is now the only European Union country to totally ban abortion.

“Just over 200 days ago, you, the people of Ireland, voted to repeal the 8th so we could care for women with compassion,” Health Minister Simon Harris said on Twitter after the bill passed the upper house.

“Today we have passed the law to make this a reality. A vote to end lonely journeys, end the stigma and support women’s choices in our own country.”

The Irish health service is now being primed to provide the first abortions to women in January.

The only step remaining in the legislative process is the ceremonial signing of the bill into law by President Michael D. Higgins.

The vote to repeal the abortion ban followed a vigorously mobilised pro-choice campaign.

“I want to thank the campaigners who fought for 35 years to change a nation, to change hearts and minds,” Harris said in a statement.

“I want to thank the minority who fought the battle in here when it was convenient for the majority to ignore.”

“We welcome the passage of this bill, and fully appreciate the importance of its enactment by year’s end so that abortion services can begin in January,” said Colm O Gorman, head of Amnesty International Ireland.

“Women have waited 35 years for this, the daily violations of their human rights must come to an end.”

However he said some concerns remained over conditions outlined in the bill — which has been the subject of sustained and emotional parliamentary debate in recent weeks.

Strasbourg gunman shot dead by French police

Breaking News December 14, 2018 07:28

Strasbourg, France

French police on Thursday shot dead a gunman who had been on the run since killing three people at Strasbourg’s popular Christmas market.

More than 700 French security forces had been hunting for 29-year-old Cherif Chekatt since the bloodshed on Tuesday night.

He was believed to have been injured after exchanging fire with soldiers during the attack, but managed to escape and had not been seen since getting out of a taxi in the Neudorf area of the northern French city.

Minutes before he was shot dead on Thursday, a helicopter with powerful searchlight flew over Neudorf.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner told reporters police swooped after the suspect was spotted in the street.

Officers tried to arrest him, but he shot at police. “They immediately returned fire and neutralised the assailant,” Castaner said.

Dozens of police vehicles converged on the area where police were applauded after the shooting. “Bravo!” some shouted as people gathered at the police cordon, a source said.

Police in several other countries earlier joined the manhunt for Chekatt, a Strasbourg native and career criminal with at least 27 convictions in four European states.

Authorities published Chekatt’s picture late Wednesday with police describing him as dangerous and urging people not to approach him.

A fifth person was detained by police for questioning on Thursday, in addition to the suspect’s parents and two brothers who have been in custody since Wednesday.

The Strasbourg Christmas market is due to reopen on Friday.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed “the solidarity of the whole country” towards the victims as he arrived for a European summit in Brussels on Thursday.

“It is not only France that has been hit… but a great European city as well,” he added, referring to the seat of the European parliament in the eastern French city that lies on the border with Germany.

Plea to ‘yellow vests’

As police were hunting Chekatt Thursday, the French government urged “yellow vest” protesters not to hold another round of demonstrations this weekend, given the strain on the country’s security forces.

Government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux called on the anti-government protesters to be “reasonable” and not protest again Saturday, after nearly four weeks of often violent demonstrations which has led the government to offer a range of financial relief to low earners.

“Our security forces have been deployed extensively these past few weeks,” Griveaux told CNews television.

“It would be better if everyone could go about their business calmly on Saturday, before the year-end celebrations with their families, instead of demonstrating and putting our security forces to work once again,” he added.

The “yellow vest” protesters, known for their fluorescent high-visibility jackets, had called for a fifth round of protests this Saturday.

The protests began on November 17 over fuel tax increases, but snowballed into a revolt over living standards as well as Macron’s perceived indifference to the problems of ordinary citizens.

Underscoring attempts to ease tensions, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe confirmed a proposed constitutional reform, which was to be debated in January, had been postponed to allow time for more discussions over local grievances.

Some union leaders also put pressure on “yellow vests” not to demonstrate on Saturday so they would not overburden police as they dealt with security after the Strasbourg attack.

But some demonstrators dismissed the calls to suspend protests.

A 23-year-old protester was killed after he was hit by a truck on a roundabout in southern France near Avignon late on Thursday, the sixth person to have died during the weeks of demonstrations.

Wide search

Strasbourg’s location in the heart of western Europe means that Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg can be easily reached by car or train, making the search for Chekatt more complicated.

Swiss police had reinforced border checks, while German authorities also widely published the photo of the suspect, which showed him with dark hair, a short beard and a visible mark on his forehead.

In 2016, a jihadist responsible for an attack on a Christmas market in Berlin was shot and killed only three days later in Milan in northern Italy after travelling through the Netherlands and France.

The Strasbourg suspect, who lived in a rundown apartment block a short drive from the city centre, was flagged by French security forces in 2015 as a possible Islamic extremist.

France has been hit by a wave of attacks from gunmen claiming allegiance to Al Qaeda or the Islamic State group since 2015, which have claimed the lives of 246 people before Tuesday’s attack, according to an AFP toll.

No group has claimed responsibility for the Strasbourg attack, but social media accounts used by Islamic State sympathisers have celebrated the killings.

Briton accused of trafficking 1.3 tons of cocaine was ‘big fish’

Paris

A British man charged with trafficking 1.3 tons of cocaine into France was on Thursday described in court as a “big fish” in the international narco-trade.

Robert Dawes, 46, believed to have been one of Europe’s biggest drug traffickers, is alleged to have flown the drugs into France from Caracas, Venezuela, in 2013 in 30 unregistered suitcases aboard an Air France plane.

British police officer Robert Hickinbottom, giving evidence by video link from to the special French court composed only of judges, said Dawes operated “at the top international level”.

He said Dawes was suspected of involvement in the 2002 murder of a teacher in the Netherlands, money-laundering operations in the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland and dealings with Colombian drug cartels.

Hickinbottom who works for the National Crime Agency (NCA), Britain’s organised crime unit, said he had been tracking Dawes’ criminal path for years.

Dawes was arrested in November 2015 at his home in southern Spain and extradited to France.

He is on trial alongside two other Britons and three Italians, who risk up to 30 years in prison and fines of up to 7.5 million euros ($8.5 million) if convicted.

The Air France shipment caused outrage in Venezuela where the interior minister admitted the suitcases had gone through security scanners that had clearly showed the presence of drugs.

Venezuelan police arrested 25 people, including members of the military and an Air France manager.

Dawes is due to testify on Tuesday with a verdict expected on December 21.

‘Lame duck for Christmas’: UK papers see pyrrhic win for PM

‘Lame duck for Christmas’: UK papers see pyrrhic win for PM

ASEAN+ December 13, 2018 16:46

By AFP

London – Britain’s partisan newspapers mostly agreed on Thursday that Prime Minister Theresa May has been damaged and faces all-but-impossible Brexit hurdles despite winning her party’s confidence vote.

“It’s lame duck for Christmas,” the opposition Labour party-backing Daily Mirror wrote on its front page. The more independent-minded i commuter newspaper said May received a “stay of execution”.

And the Brexit-support The Sun said the “coup plot may lead to (a) historic breakup of the Tory party”. May won the backing of 200 Conservative party MPs in a secret ballot on Wednesday.

But 117 voted against her — a margin that underscored the extent of the opposition from her own ranks to the draft withdrawal agreement May struck with EU leaders last month.

The no-confidence vote was initiated by staunchly anti-EU MPs in May’s party.

Her deal is also opposed by Labour and smaller opposition parties in parliament that want closer ties with Brussels.

The scale of the resistance — and May’s promise to her party on Wednesday to not contest the 2022 election — made newspapers question the extent of the British leader’s victory.

“Tory coup fails. But scale of rebellion damages May,” said the left-wing The Guardian.

“Theresa May scrapes home,” said The Times.

The traditionally right-wing paper said five minister were now urging May to let parliament “hold a series of ‘indicative’ votes on every conceivable option” of Brexit.

May pulled a vote scheduled for Tuesday on the draft agreed last month with  her 27 EU counterparts because of its certain defeat.

She heads back to Brussels on Thursday in a long-shot bid to wrest concessions that could win her some additional votes.

EU leaders refuse to renegotiate the actual draft but seem willing to offer May non-binding assurances on the main dispute involving measures to prevent the return of a hard border with Ireland.

May has promised to re-submit her Brexit deal for a vote in the House of Commons by January 21.

There’s drama behind the scenes at the ongoing 2018 Miss Universe Pageant in Thailand this year.

A viral video making the rounds on social media seemingly falsely depicts Miss USA holding court over Miss Colombia and Miss Australia as she appears to mock Miss Cambodia – Rern Sinat – for her lack of English during rehearsals in Bangkok.

“Miss Cambodia is here and doesn’t speak any English, and not a single person here speaks her language. Francesca [Miss Australia] said that it would be very isolating,” said Sarah Rose Summers from Nebraska, Omaha in the video.

However an anonymous source inside the pageant told The Post: “Actually, Miss Cambodia and Miss Australia are friends, and Miss Australia wants someone to talk to. They knew they were on camera.”

Sinat was said that she was “hurt” after the exchange, but the source said that she “felt better” after learning she had been assigned a translator by the pageant’s organisers.

“A lot of the contestants have a translator,” said the source. “It was a big issue for them last week. But now we’re OK … actually, Miss USA might visit Cambodia next year.”

Miss Australia, Francesca Hung, posted a photograph on Instagram of herself with Sinat with a caption reading: “I’m so upset that this situation has been misconstrued like this … We were merely saying it must be even more difficult at times not to have a single other delegate being able to speak [Khmer] … which in fact, makes Nat [Miss Cambodia] an even stronger contender [for the crown].”

A member from the Cambodian camp requested the pageant’s organisers provide them a translator as the video may have unfairly garnered Rose Summers criticism online.

Sinat previously had to rely on Google Translate to communicate during much of the preliminary rounds in Bangkok. Her team in Phnom Penh (which included a translator who did not travel with her to Thailand) requested organisers provide Miss Cambodia with a translator, who was provided on Wednesday morning.

“It’s difficult because Khmer isn’t a very [widespread] language [while] some of the Latinspeaking girls had two translators,” alleged the source.

The 67th Miss Universe is currently in the preliminary stages. The grand final is set for December 17.

Prayut comes under blistering attack as political bans are lifted

politics December 14, 2018 01:00

By THE NATION

PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-cha and his government yesterday came under attack from politicians taking advantage of the junta’s lifting of political restrictions on Tuesday.

Key figures of many parties slammed what they said were the many problems this junta-led administration had created over the four years it has been in power. They were in agreement that a change of government was needed.

Most of the parties who spoke up yesterday are linked to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who has been living in self-imposed exile overseas since 2008.

On Tuesday, the ruling National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) partially repealed nine of its previous orders that restricted political activities since the 2014 military coup. The NCPO effectively lifted the ban on political gatherings of five or more and allowed parties to hold meetings and other activities of a political nature.

Veteran politician Chaturon Chaisang said the country had been at a standstill for many years under dictatorship.

“The country is ruled by a leader who lacks maturity and cannot be scrutinised. People have no right to air their sufferings. The leader keeps yelling at them,” he said.

Chaturon, who heads the election strategy committee of Thai Raksa Chart Party, said Thais should no longer tolerate the sufferings inflicted by the junta, which includes the widening gap between the rich and the poor. Also, he said, Thailand needs a democratically elected government if it is to restore international confidence.

“Dictatorship must be replaced with democracy. We cannot change General Prayut’s thoughts, so the only way out is to change the government,” he said. The politician, who recently left the Thaksin-linked Pheu Thai Party, claimed his new party knows how to solve the country’s problems.

Chaturon also asked Prayut to state clearly that he will not issue any more orders as junta chief in the run-up to the election that will put a pro-NCPO party at an advantage.

Thai Raksa Chart’s meeting for election candidates was held yesterday at Muang Thong Thani in Nonthaburi province. Present at the event were the party’s executives and key figures, including its young leader Preechapol Pongpanit.

Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, who leads Pheu Thai Party’s election strategy committee, said yesterday that it was time for “people who can work” to run the country.

“Over the past four to five years, people have been suffering and falling under the burden of debt. It is time to allow political parties that can make money to run the country. We don’t want people who can only spend money,” she said.

Sudarat was speaking while meeting constituents in the Northeast province of Si Sa Ket.

Tourism suffering ‘as country is not democratic’

Jatuporn Promphan, a senior figure in Puea Chat Party, which is also linked to Thaksin, said many of the country’s problems have remained unsolved under this junta-led government. Also, Thailand’s bargaining power in the international community has diminished because it is under military rule, he said.

“Tourist arrivals have declined because the country is not democratic,” Jatuporn, who is a red-shirt leader, said.

He also said a free and fair election was necessary to prevent conflict and chaos following the national vote.

“Our country has suffered a lot of damage already. So, all sides should make sacrifices to ensure peace. The election must be held properly so we can get a good and legitimate government,” he said.

Seripisut Temiyavej, leader of Seri Ruam Thai Party, said yesterday that the longer the Prayut government stays in power, the gap between the rich and the poor will become wider.

“This government favours capitalists who get richer and richer, yet ordinary people get poorer,” he said while meeting with voters in Bangkok’s Asok area.

The former national police chief-turned-politician also said it was time for the country to get a democratically elected government. “Whether it is good or bad, at least you can scrutinise it, unlike a dictatorship,” Seripisut said.

Meanwhile, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday that he believed people want to see a better government after the election.

“People also want a better economy and hope honest political parties can implement policy platforms that really benefit the people,” former PM Abhisit said.
