‘Human capital development holds key’

THAILAND needs to focus on management of human capital amid rising challenges, especially in the ageing society era.

Rebecca J Stoeckle, vice president of the Education Development Centre (EDC), lauded the Thailand 4.0 development agenda, which she called “a wonderful centralisation of government initiatives” with enormous investment in infrastructure.

“We also see rising challenges brought by an ageing population. With those key phenomena, it is critical to emphasise human capital development where nobody is going to be left behind, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds,” she said.

“The main concern is that a lot of foreign direct investment [FDI] flowing into Southeast Asian countries is not being invested in local human capital development. They have not taken advantage of the opportunity to institutionalise ways to make sure that FDI actually does translate into local human capital development,” said Stoeckle.

“Examples can be found in Thailand’s automotive industry over the past 20 years, where the local people’s skills have not sufficiently been upgraded. That has spurred the same concern in the case of the S-Curve industry under Thailand 4.0 today.

“We want to show you a good example of a German partner who has worked on that. They have helped create a system that engages vocational schools in the industries and vice versa. We thus want to make sure that we can introduce such a dual-track system locally in the country and develop the local talent pipeline. As Thailand progresses into industry 4.0, this will be absolutely critical. And issues related to human resources development should be more cross-sectoral, rather than just a matter of a single ministry taking care of it,” said Stoeckle.

EDC is a global non-profit organisation that offers lasting solutions to improve education, promote health and expand economic opportunity. Since 1958, the centre has been a leader in designing, implementing and evaluating powerful and innovative programmes in more than 80 countries around the world. EDC has also implemented Accelerating Work Achievement and Readiness for Employment 2 (AWARE 2), which is to realise an impressive mandate: to position technical and vocational education and training (TVET) graduates for success in the digital economy.

Funded by JP Morgan and implemented by EDC, AWARE 2 has provided timely, innovative skills training and work-based learning opportunities to Asean youth who are prepared to enter the workforce and innovate in the digital economies in Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia. Now in its third and final year, the programme seeks to highlight and further build upon the success of its programme through continued innovation and by building new alliances and opportunities.

The AWARE 2 leadership was convened in Bangkok recently to share some of the best practices and lessons from the project, with an aim to identify additional partners and opportunities to advance AWARE 2’s reach and impact.

“For EDC, we focus on enhancement of soft skills, creativity, teamwork, initiative, in addition to technical skills for our TVET students to be able to succeed in a world where jobs are much more fluid and people are moving around from firm to firm. As we have seen, most large firms are successful largely due to great support from SMEs. So we need to develop more students who are able to drive innovation in those small and medium-sized firms so that they are not falling behind. Let’s say innovation is not only produced by the company’s top specialists or bosses, but can also be contributed by young staff who are able to introduce new business models,” said Stoeckle.

TVET programmes need to be much more adaptable and train students to perform cross-sectorally, said Stoeckle. They also need to create programmes that are more flexible in terms of curricula and faculty who are no longer identical in skills and backgrounds.

“We want to promote authentic engagement between industry and schools,” she said, adding that it was interesting to see Australian university graduates who wanted to get a good job go for vocational training.

Regarding the question on how technological disruption affects the workplace and educational sector, Stoeckle said she did not consider herself qualified to speak on the subject.

“What I can reaffirm is that no matter to what extent a company is disrupted, we want our TVET students to disrupt themselves to stay ahead. We want them to be able to disrupt their own systems before being disrupted by the systems. That is why we would rather produce workers with diverse perspectives and backgrounds than seeing hundreds of employees with homogeneous profiles. We believe in the power of diversity. With this, the companies would be able to match their labour skill sets that they bring to the table, making them relevant to the real needs of industries,” said Stoeckle.

Speaking about the shortage of human capital in the workplace today, Stoeckle said she found there were enough competent workers out there but they just had not got the right jobs – the ones that fit their competencies and the company’s needs.

“I think this is largely due to cultural factors in which a family, especially disadvantaged families, always make tremendous sacrifices to pay for the university education of their children. Often their students do not achieve the credentials or the skills that they actually need to get a good job. So we try to strengthen the TVET programmes and foster a new perception that students can have a good job in the digital economy without paying for a university education. And for employers, it is often a wonderful bargain because entry-level salaries of TVET students are low, while the skill levels are good enough,” she said.

“There are not enough young people to take all the good jobs [in the industry], so we must find a way to give a real opportunity for students of TVET,” she added.

“We see the same gaps in the development of industry-ready skilled workers for the digital economy in Asean, especially Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. We saw opportunities to further develop vocational education and saw governments’ commitments to reforming education in Thailand and Indonesia, while we witnessed real change in the education system in the Philippines. It is our hope that we can introduce new ways of bridging the gaps between what education can offer and what industry really needs.”

Stoeckle said that EDC, however, is focusing on two things: first, to get industry to engage with the classroom, opening up faculties’ perspectives on what is really happening in the real business world. And, second, to develop human capital as capable, adaptive and innovative in the emerging digital economy.

“We just want to make sure students in Asia get quality jobs, approaching their careers [in a way that] prepares them for the longer pathway, not just entry-level jobs. We want to understand why the government policy is not actually translating into more opportunities for young people. We hope that through our three-year project, our partners are able to identify the gaps and needs and address them all around the ecosystems, from policy to industry engagements,” she said.

Thai Internet economy growing rapidly: study

THAILAND’S Internet economy is expected to be worth US$43 billion in 2025, according to a study.

“e-Conomy SEA 2018: Southeast Asia’s Internet Economy Reaches an Inflection Point” conducted by Google and Temasek says that Southeast Asia’s Internet economy will be surge from $72 billion in 2018 to $240 billion in 2025. Thailand’s Internet economy in 2018 is estimated at $12 billion. It is the second largest in SEA with 22 per cent growth rate per year and is expected to be worth $43 billion in 2025.

Thailand’s Internet economy currently contributed 2.7 per cent of national gross domestic product (GDP), lower than China and the US’ 6.5 per cent in 2016, which means there is huge opportunity to accelerate growth.

Ben King, country manger of Google Thailand, said that according to research, the key driver of Thailand’s Internet economy is e-commerce and online media.

Thailand’s e-commerce in 2018 is valued at $3 billion and gross merchant values on all e-commerce platforms is the second largest e-commerce market in SEA behind Indonesia with $12.2 billion.

Online media is the distinguished sector since it is growing rapidly. Online media, included advertising gaming, and music and video subscription, is now about $2.4 billion, growing at 44 per cent per annum. It is expected to touch $7 billion in 2025.

The key factors driving online media are growth in Internet users, video streaming, paid video and music, and local developer and creators.

However, ride hailing in Thailand in 2018 saw a slowdown in growth due to consolidation but it is expected to pick up again in 2019. This year saw revenue of $700 million, up from $400 million in 2015. But it is expected to grow at 22 per cent per year to reach $4 billion in 2025.

Last but not least, online travel is another big sector for the Internet economy. Thailand’s online travel market in 2018 was worth $6.1 billion in gross booking value, as the second largest in SEA behind Indonesia with $25 billion. It is expected to grow at 18 per cent per annum to reach $20 billion in 2025.

This visible progress in Thailand’s Internet economy towards solving the ecosystem challenges identified in its previous research included funding, Internet, consumer trust, talent, logistic, and payment.

Consumer trust is rapidly increasing across sectors. For example, in 2018, active e-commerce users were 120 million; gamer active users were 164 million; ride hailing active users were 35 million, and online travel booking had 41 per cent penetration.

Meanwhile, the Internet economy directly created skilled jobs for 100,000 professionals in 2018 and is expected to create 200,000 jobs in 2025. It creates employment at 10 per cent compound annual growth rate.

Moreover, 2018 will be a record year for Internet economy fundraising in SEA. In the first half of this year alone, $9.1 billion were raised. In SEA, $24 billion has been raised since 2015.

Of the amount raised in the first half, around $6.5 billion went to SEA’s nine unicorns. Meanwhile, Grab has become the first decacorn, a company with valuation exceeding $10 billion, which is among less than 20 globally.

However, he said the Thai government should encourage overseas expansion of local Internet companies. SEA’s Internet economy could become a key driver of national economic growth, business development, and job creation.

The report also projects that the pool of skilled Internet economy professionals needs to expand by 10 per cent in the region every year to support the growth of local business.

Governments need to invest in training their people with the right skills for the Internet economy so that businesses have a pool of local developers, computer scientists, online marketing professionals and data analysts to draw from.

“e-Conomy SEA 2018” is the third edition of e-Conomy SEA by Google and Temasek’s research on Southeast Asia’s Internet economy.

The research covers four sectors of the Internet economy: e-commerce, online media, ride hailing and online travel, with four new sub-sectors added this year – video on demand, music on demand, online food delivery, and online vacation rentals.

NBTC prepares spectrum for 5G services

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has appointed a working panel to recall the spectrum bands from the state agencies for reallocation, including for 5G services.

The panel will take 30 days to finish conducting analysis on the spectrum recall and specifying which spectra it will recall.

Earlier, NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith said that the 2.6GHz is the first spectrum the NBTC will recall.

The Commission had its rules of recalling the spectra for reallocation published in the Royal Gazette on November 27.

The NBTC panel tasked to recall the 700MHz band last week called the meeting with digital TV broadcasters on its plan to recall the 700MHz from them. It will auction the 700MHz band to provide future 5G telecom services. It is expected to call the bid for this band within the second half of next year.

Indonesia studies China’s 5G offer

Indonesia will study China’s offer to develop 5G technology in the archipelago, particularly the business model and ecosystem required in such an upgrade.

China offered Asean countries its services in developing 5G technology at a press conference on the sidelines of the 2018 Telsom Telmin meeting between regional communications ministry officials in Ubud, Bali, last Thursday.

“China is offering [to develop] 5G technology, but it is up to each [Asean] country because we need to consider the ecosystem and business model,” Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara said, as quoted by Antara.

He said the government would leave it to cellular phone operators to decide whether they would adopt 5G technology.

The 5G network offers more speed than 4G, which is currently being used widely in the country, but by applying the upgraded technology, consumers will also pay more.

Rudiantara estimated the price could be five to 10 times higher than the price of 4G networks.

Previously, China’s Deputy Minister for Industry and Informatics Technology Zhaoxiong Chen told journalists that the county had developed 5G technology and would share it with Asean countries.

“We have good achievement in 5G technology and we have tested the system. We want to share our success and experience with Asean to accelerate the adoption of 5G technology,” Zhaoxiong said, adding that two Chinese companies – Huawei and ZTE – were ready to offer their services and expertise. –The Jakarta Post

Experts peg GDP growth at 4% in 2019

THE NATION

THAILAND’S gross domestic product (GDP) will grow by 4 per cent and above next year, according to economic experts from Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) and Kasikornbank.

The Thai economy is also predicted to recover in the fourth quarter of this year after a slump in the third quarter, according to experts at the two banks.

Thailand’s GDP is predicted to recover from a low 3.3-per-cent growth in the third quarter to 3.9 per cent in the fourth quarter, according to Yunyong Thaicharoen, first executive vice president and head of SCB’s Economic Intelligence Centre.

Yunyong was speaking at an SCB press conference in Chiang Mai last Friday.

He predicted that exports would grow by 7.5 per cent in 2018, lower than the Commerce Ministry’s 8-per-cent estimate. Yunyong further predicted a fall in export growth to 4.3 per cent in 2019. This is due to the uncertain trading conditions stemming from the ongoing US-China trade war.

“Meanwhile, GDP growth in 2019 will be strong at 4.2 per cent. This would be partly from the expected recovery of tourism numbers, which would most likely occur in the second quarter of next year,” he said.

“We expect a total of 38 million tourists to visit Thailand by the end of this year, and up to 40.2 million in 2019, marking a 5.8 per cent year-on-year increase,” he stated.

“Government policies aimed at boosting tourism such as offering free visa-on-arrival to tourists from targeted countries will certainly help support the recovery of tourism numbers in 2019,” he continued.

“However, the key factor which has led to a slump in tourism numbers in the third quarter of this year was the concern over Thailand’s tourist safety standards,” he said.

“Hence the Thai government will need to direct its efforts to improve safety measures and assure Chinese tourists that Thailand is a safe tourist destination,” he said.

Yunyong pointed to the Phuket boat accident in July, which damaged the trust of Chinese tourists and led to a fall in tourist numbers in the third quarter.

In the third quarter of this year, foreign tourist arrival growth was at 7.4 per cent year on year. Meanwhile, in the first six months of this year tourism grew by up to 12.2 per cent year on year, according to the Tourism and Sports Ministry.

The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) offered supporting figures: in August, 867,000 tourists visited the country, down 11.77 per cent month on month.

In September, only 648,000 Chinese tourists came, marking an even steeper 14.89 per cent fall month on month.

Another key growth driver for 2019 will be public and private investments, Yunyong claimed. He predicted total private investments to grow by 4 per cent year on year in 2019.

He expects foreign direct investment (FDI) to increase by single digits as the Thai government tries to attract FDI into the Eastern Economic Corridor.

Meanwhile, total public investment in 2018 is predicted at Bt747 billion with Bt600 billion going to general projects and Bt147 billion going to transportation mega-projects.

In 2019, total public investment is predicted at Bt813 billion, with Bt649 billion going to general projects and Bt164 billion going to transportation mega-projects, according to figures from the ministry of finance and ministry of transport.

“The Thai economy may enjoy 4-per-cent growth [next year], with the help of investment to compensate from the faltering momentum of external sectors such as exports and tourism,” Kasikorn Research Centre assistant managing director Nattaporn Triratanasirikul said at a separate seminar on Friday.

KBank’s export analysis suggests slower growth in 2019.

“The US-China trade war will be a key variable for Thai exports next year. Our exports are projected to grow at 4.5 per cent in 2019 versus 7.7 per cent in 2018,” Nattaporn said.

Jakarta –  ONE Championship™ (ONE) has just announced the main event of ONE: ETERNAL GLORY, set for Istora Senayan in Jakarta on 19 January.

Reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua “The Passion” Pacio of the Philippines is ready to defend his title against Hayato Suzuki of Japan in a highly-anticipated rematch.

Joshua “The Passion” Pacio, who hails from Baguio City, Philippines, captured the ONE Strawweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over former titleholder Yoshitaka Naito at ONE: CONQUEST OF HEROES last September. It was an epic rematch between the two warriors, as Pacio put together the performance of a lifetime to claim the prestigious title.

The 22-year-old Filipino has shown tremendous improvement over the past few years leading up to his title reign. With the ONE Strawweight World Championship firmly in his grasp, he looks to make a successful first defense against the last man to defeat him.

Hayato Suzuki, who hails from Takahagi City, Japan, first met Pacio in his promotional debut at ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS in August 2017. The 32-year-old scored a shocking first-round submission victory, forcing the Filipino to tap out via rear-naked choke. Since then, the Japanese grappler has been on a tear, winning his last three bouts with the same submission hold.

An experienced grappler, Suzuki looks to replicate that stellar performance against Pacio and will attempt to claim the ONE Strawweight World Championship at ONE: ETERNAL GLORY on 19 January.

Klopp demands Liverpool produce unique display against Napoli

sports December 11, 2018 07:08

By AFP

Jurgen Klopp has called on Liverpool to produce “something special” when they face Napoli in a do-or-die Champions League showdown on Tuesday.

Klopp’s side must beat Napoli at Anfield to stand any chance of progressing from their group into the knockout stages.

A 1-0 victory or any two-goal win will see the Reds through.

Liverpool have a long history of success on big European nights on their own ground, dating all the way back to the memorable European Cup quarter-final win over Saint-Etienne in 1977 that kick-started their continental reign.

That gives Klopp hope as he prepares to face a major test against Napoli, who are second in Serie A and unbeaten in Champions League Group C, having defeated Liverpool 1-0 when they met in Italy in October.

The Italian side have continued to look strong despite losing manager Maurizio Sarri to Chelsea in July, with Carlo Ancelotti taking over and Klopp knows Liverpool will have to produce one of their most dominant displays to advance.

“We really need to make sure we are ready for Napoli. It’s difficult to come in after a successful coach such as Sarri and make changes but they are so good,” Klopp told reporters on Monday.

“We know the result we need, and it’s difficult because Napoli are dangerous on the counter attack and good defending.

“They are a typical Italian team. But if something special is possible, then it’s here, and we will try that.”

Liverpool go into Tuesday’s match in good spirits, having gone top of the Premier League on Saturday when they won 4-0 at Bournemouth and previous leaders Manchester City lost 2-0 at Chelsea.

Klopp, however, is certain that his players will not get carried away, either in the Premier League or in Europe, given the defeats they have suffered in their group this season.

– Confident –

“We will not get carried away. We know how difficult it is,” he said.

“We are not the most experienced side but we know our way and which way we will go all the time.

“The league is not important at the moment because tomorrow we play Napoli. We were confident before the away games in Napoli and Belgrade, and that didn’t help.”

Klopp, meanwhile, has commended former Liverpool player Raheem Sterling for the way he dealt with alleged racist abuse directed towards him while playing for Manchester City at Chelsea on Saturday.

Chelsea and the Metropolitan Police are investigating the allegations after a video was posted on social media that showed the England winger being shouted at by Chelsea fans as he collected the ball behind the goal.

On Sunday, Sterling published a post on Instagram saying that British newspapers are helping to “fuel racism” because of the way they portray young black footballers.

He also wrote in the post that he “had to laugh” when he heard the alleged racist remarks during the game because he expects “no better”.

“I watched the game and I think I saw the situation when he went for the corner and I saw a few guys shouting,” he said.

“I didn’t hear, I’m not sure if it was possible to hear what they shouted, but I already thought his reaction was just brilliant.

“You saw his face. He gave the right response, not to react for these people.

“They don’t deserve any reaction, they don’t deserve any respect.

“I am obviously not surprised that things like this still happen but I like the fact that we put the finger on it and say: ‘You cannot say what you want, it is not possible.'”

Phachara shines as future star

sports December 11, 2018 06:40

Singapore – His name Phachara means ‘diamond’ in Thai.

A perfectly apt nickname for the 19-year-old, who is indeed a raw diamond waiting to shine.

And shine he certainly did.

The fearless Thai may be young, but he clearly knows how to play good, competitive golf since picking up the sport at the age of nine.

When Phachara was 14, he began to sparkle brightly by becoming the youngest player as an amateur to win a professional tournament in the world.

He turned professional in 2014 and won twice on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) before going on to enjoy a solid Asian Tour career.

While he may still be searching for a first victory on the Asian Tour, the young Thai has showed he is no pushover when it comes to the big stage.

At the SMBC Singapore Open last year, he showed he can match up against the big boys when he finished tied-second at the Singapore showpiece.

And a month later in Perth, the Thai exceeded all expectations when he defeated seasoned campaigners at ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth before falling short to home favourite Brett Rumford in the final match-play showdown.

He has already featured in two Open Championships in 2016 and 2017 and his performances has been a testament to his true golfing ability which belies his young age.

Phachara confesses to be a ‘funny guy and happy person’.

He looks up to elder statesman Thongchai Jaidee, as ‘one of his heroes’ who has showed him what it means to be a champion.

Just like Thongchai, who has already achieved so much success on the Asian Tour, Phachara could well be on his way to become a champion in his own right as he’s one of our ‘Tomorrow Stars Today’.

Singapore – With only one event left on the Asian Tour schedule, India’s Shubhankar Sharma has amassed an unassailable lead on the Habitat for Humanity Standings and with that, he is crowned Asia’s new number one.

What remains unknown, is the winner of the Asian Tour Rookie of the Year award.

2018 has seen a group of exciting, skilful and talented new faces on Tour, with South Africa’s Justin Harding and Korea’s Sanghyun Park leading the charge. Both golfers have enjoyed a wildly successful first-year on Tour and they are in line to win the coveted award, which will be handed out at the conclusion of this week’s US$750,000 BNI Indonesian Masters.

Harding made a spectacular entrance to the Asian Tour in July this year at the Bank BRI Indonesia Open. He received an invitation to the tournament by virtue of his outstanding form on the Sunshine Tour, and he displayed that same, blistering form en route to his maiden Asian Tour victory in Jakarta. The South African took up Tour membership on the spot.

Two weeks later he won the Royal Cup in Thailand, making him the first golfer in Tour history to win two times in as many starts. At the same time, the 32-year-old Harding broke into the top-100 on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and earned a spot to play at the PGA Championship.

Harding continued to wow fans with his brilliant performances throughout the year. Highlights include his second-place finish at the Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup as well as top-10s in Chinese Taipei and Mauritius. He is currently placed third on the Asian Tour Habitat for Humanity Standings, about US$82,000 behind Park.

Park banked on the familiarity of the conditions in his home country to achieve immense success on the Asian Tour. He has been dominant in Korea, having won the GS Caltex Maekyung Open, coming in second place at the Kolon Korean Open and winning his second Asian Tour title in 2018 at the Shinhan Donghae Open.

The 35-year-old then rode on the back of his outstanding form into the Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup and the Mercuries Taiwan Masters, where he was placed tied-fourth and tied-ninth respectively. If anything, the results proved that he is no slouch either when he’s on foreign soil.

These two worthy candidates will be looking to end their season on a high.

Both Harding and Park will be teeing up this week at Royale Jakarta, where they will be up against an elite field that includes defending champion and world number two Justin Rose, Major winner Henrik Stenson as well as some of Asian Tour’s best players such as Sharma and breakout star, John Catlin of the United States.

A six-strong Thai contingent led by Ratchanok Intanon will take part in four events at the BWF World Tour Finals which starts tomorrow at the Tianhe Gymnasium in Guangzhou, China.

The Kingdom has representatives in each of the men’s and women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles, missing only the men’s doubles in the season-ending tournament.

Only eight singles players and eight doubles pairs, with the best accumulating points from 25 BWF World Tour events, have been invited to compete for the overall prize money of US$1.5 million.

World No 8 Ratchanok, semi-finalist in 2012, 2015 and 2017 is placed in the women’s singles group B along with 2017 world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan, Chen Yufei of China and Michelle Li of Canada.

The top two players in the round-robin competition will move into the knockout stage against their counterparts in group A, which contains world No1 Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan, defending champion Akane Yamauchi of Japan, PV Sindhu of India and Malaysian Zhang Beiwen of Malaysia.

On the men’s side, Thai No2 Kantaphon Wangcharoen is in group B alongside current world champion Kento Momota of Japan, two-time Thailand Masters champion Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia and Sameer Verma of India.

“I have been training hard for three weeks in preparation for this tournament. My plan is to finish top two in the group and make it to the semi-finals,” said 20-year-old Kataphon

World No2 Shi Yuqi of China, No3 Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan, No6 South Korean Son Wan-ho and No7 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia are in group A.

In the women’s doubles, Thai No 1 pair Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai have been drawn in a tough group A, which features world No2 Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi of Japan, No3 Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara of Japan, plus Thailand Open and India Open champions Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu of Indonesia.

California nuns stole schools funds for Vegas gambling, travel

Two Catholic school nuns in California have admitted to embezzling about $500,000, and using the funds over the years for travel and gambling in Las Vegas, their order said on Monday.

Sisters Mary Margaret Kreuper and Lana Chang, who are said to be best friends, took the money from tuition, fees and donations at St. James Catholic School in Torrance, south of Los Angeles.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles said the missing money was discovered during a routine audit and it is believed the nuns had stolen the money over at least a decade.

Kreuper was a former principal at the school where she worked for 20 years until her retirement earlier this year. Chang was a teacher for 20 years and she also retired this year, according to local media reports.

“Our community is concerned and saddened by this situation and regret any injury to our long relationship with the families of the school,” the Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the nuns’ order, said in a statement sent to AFP. “The Sisters of St. Joseph both desire and intend to make complete restitution to St. James School.”

Parents were reportedly informed about the nuns’ misdeeds earlier this month.

Though police have been alerted, the Archdiocese has said it does not plan to seek criminal charges against the pair, who spent decades as students’ moral enforcers.

“We do know that they had a pattern of going on trips. We do know they had a pattern of going to casinos, and the reality is, they used the account as their personal account,” the Press-Telegram quoted an attorney telling parents and alumni at a recent meeting.

The nuns allegedly got away with their crime by depositing some checks made out to the school for tuition and other fees into a bank account different than the one used by the school.

“Sister Mary Margaret and Sister Lana have expressed to me and asked that I convey to you, the deep remorse they each feel for their actions and ask for your forgiveness and prayers,” Michael Meyers, the school’s pastor, said in a letter to parents.

“They and their order pray that you have not lost trust or faith in the educators and administrators of the school. Let us pray for our school families and for Sister Mary Margaret and Sister Lana.”
