Hospitalizations in D.C. and Maryland set records as omicron surge continues

Maryland and the District set records Wednesday for patients hospitalized with covid-19, as the region headed into a new chapter of the coronavirus pandemic, in which many people are safer from severe disease due to vaccines but the highly transmissible omicron variant has still led to more hospitalizations than ever before.

Hospitalizations in D.C. and Maryland set records as omicron surge continues

Across the region, local leaders continue to call for more measures to mitigate a wave of coronavirus cases caused by the rapidly spreading variant. On Wednesday, Montgomery County considered extending its mask mandate longer; Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, R, and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, granted emergency funds to help local hospitals; and Bowser announced that school students won’t be allowed to come back from winter break without proving first that they have tested negative for the virus.

So far, the omicron wave has not caused disease as severe as earlier waves of the pandemic. Fewer patients now need intensive care or ventilators. Vaccinated people, especially those with booster shots, are far less likely to need hospital care at all. And while case rates have soared and hospitalization rates risen, a serious rise in deaths has not yet followed, though health-care workers are still waiting cautiously to see whether the increase in sick patients will lead to a rise in deaths next week.

“This is not March of 2020,” Hogan sought to reassure residents on Wednesday, even as hospital leaders and Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, D, asked him to reimpose a state of emergency. “It’s important to use common sense and take precautions, but we have the tools, resources and strategies in place to protect ourselves.”

In a statement, Hogan said the state has “already taken a number of emergency actions in preparation for this surge,” including directing $100 million to hospitals and nursing homes and mobilizing the Maryland National Guard to set up new testing sites.

The District also announced plans to make $15 million in additional grants to hospitals on Wednesday, to help them cover staffing costs during the coronavirus surge. Bowser noted that about 1 in 4 hospital workers in the District are not currently working because they have tested positive for the virus or have been in close contact with someone who has.

With such high absence rates, hospitals are employing more than twice as many visiting nurses as before the pandemic, at a cost of about $160 to $200 per hour for each nurse.

The city’s health department said Wednesday that those hospitalized with covid last week spanned a range of ages, from 28 children younger than 5, to 63 people over 74. The highest number of those hospitalized were between 55 and 64 years of age.

More than 500 patients in the District were hospitalized Wednesday with confirmed or suspected cases of covid, breaking a record for total coronavirus hospitalizations in the city set in April 2020, according to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Maryland on Tuesday night surpassed more than 2,000 covid-related hospitalizations – the highest number in that state since the start of the pandemic.

Maryland reported 10,873 new cases on Wednesday – another pandemic record – and 31 deaths. Virginia reported 12,112 cases and 37 deaths, and the District reported 1,412 cases and one death.

Elrich noted on Wednesday that Montgomery, Maryland’s most vaccinated county, has seen its case rate multiply eightfold over the month of December. About 133 employees and volunteers of the county’s Fire and Rescue Services department have been unable to report to work because of a coronavirus infection or exposure, forcing the department to make adjustments in services, he said. “We expect these numbers to get worse before they get better,” Elrich said.

Montgomery has rules in place that will automatically end the county’s indoor mask mandate when 85% of its 1 million residents are fully vaccinated. But on Wednesday – with 83% of the population fully vaccinated – acting health officer James Bridgers recommended to lawmakers that the mask mandate stay in place at least until the end of January, according to assistant chief administrative officer Earl Stoddard. The council will review Bridgers’ recommendation next week, Stoddard said.

The District and Baltimore County both brought back their lapsed mask mandates in response to this surge in cases, and currently plan to end them at the end of January.

Residents continue to line up for tests across the region. D.C. Health emergency response leader Patrick Ashley said Wednesday that the city gave out more than 216,000 rapid antigen tests in its first week, making the tests available free at select firehouses and libraries in the city.

So far, 16,989 people have used the health department’s website to report the result of those tests, Ashley said, and he asked everyone who takes a test at home to report whether it is positive or negative, so that the District can track the data. Of those who reported the tests that they obtained from the city or bought at a pharmacy, 833 of them were positive, Ashley said – meaning the vast majority of the city’s cases during the recent surge have been reported through more traditional testing channels, despite the recent interest in at-home tests.

Donna Durante-Miller’s bar on H Street, The Elroy, was closed Wednesday, but she was there anyway – supervising a makeshift coronavirus testing site. Durante-Miller had previously teamed up with a laboratory to offer coronavirus tests at her bar, and felt it was time again.

Instead of drinks or hookah, people lined up Wednesday afternoon to choose between a nasal swab or a saliva test, both offered free with or without insurance and promising results within 24 hours. “Now that the need is so great, and the lines are so long in D.C., we thought we’d bring it back,” she said.

The number of Covid-19 cases crossed 14.81 million across Southeast Asia, with 22,897 new cases reported on Wednesday (December 29). New deaths are at 340, bringing accumulated Covid-19 deaths in Asean to 303,749.

Asean reported over 22,000 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday

Vietnam welcomed some 157,300 international arrivals in 2021, plunging 95.9 percent on year, mainly due to impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, the country’s General Statistics Office said Wednesday. Foreign visitors entering the country by air accounted for 70.6 percent of the total, followed by road with 29 percent and sea routes with 0.4 percent. Most of the arrivals were from Asia (84.5 percent).

Meanwhile, Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority announced that local and foreign travellers entering Singapore are each allowed to bring with them a maximum of 20 Covid-19 self-test kits that have not been authorised for use here as long as they are approved for use in the country the traveller is arriving from.

The maximum quota of 20 self-test kits that can be brought in is based on the expectation that incoming travellers may need to test themselves daily for 14 days, with some allowance for retesting.

The Huai Nam Dang National Park in Chiang Mai’s Mae Taeng district is all set to welcome an influx of tourists on the weekend.

Chiang Mais Huai Nam Dang National Park beckons as temperatures drop

Park chief Bancha Ramsiri said on Thursday that many wild Himalayan cherry trees, or Thai Sakura trees, are presently blooming, which occurs only in winter.

The lowest temperature at the sightseeing spot and tent site on Thursday was 9 degrees Celsius. The sky was clear with sunlight and tourists were treated to a white sea of fog at daybreak.

Meanwhile, the lowest temperature at the Pong Dueat Hot Spring was 15 degrees Celsius. At the Tha Pai Hot Spring it was 16 degrees.

Visitors arrived at the hot springs to wash their feet and even take a something like a bath under strict Covid-19 prevention measures, Bancha said.

Around 1,000 to 1,500 tourists have been visiting the area per day, he said, adding that 300 tourists were staying in houses and tents.

Bancha expected more tourists to arrive on December 31 and January 1 because of the long holiday and the fact that mountains with their cool-to-cold temperatures are more popular with tourists this year.

Moreover, national parks all over the country are open to visitors for free.

Park staff have prepared measures to prevent Covid-19 from spreading, controlling the number of tourists and managing an increase in traffic, Bancha added.

The substitution of goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan, who lost his father on the same day, was the highlight of Thailand’s victory against Indonesia 4-0 in the first leg of the final of the AFF Championship on Wednesday.

Substitute goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan replaced goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen in the seventy-fourth minute.

Kawin, whose father died from cancer on Wednesday before the match, thanked his teammates and staff for helping the team come closer to winning the trophy. He also thanked everyone who supported him after he lost his father.

He said he wanted to thank everyone because he needed support at the moment. Kawin also wanted everyone to cheer for the team during their second key match.

Meanwhile, head coach Alexandre “Mano” Pölking said he wanted to reward Kawin after the footballer’s father passed away.

Mano said he wanted to explain to Indonesia that he did not intend to disrespect them after the team changed its goalkeeper. It was because Kawin’s father died in the afternoon. He wanted to reward Kawin by creating a “great memory” for him to play for his father.

Unfancied Witchayapat Steals 2nd Round Show at Thailand Mixed #5

Rookie Witchayapat Sinsrang was hot on his heels as he fired a stunning 63 to lead the halfway stage of the Bt5 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf at the Aquella Golf and Country Club in Phang-Nga on Wednesday.

The little-known player from Nakhon Ratchasima produced an error-free second round with four birdies at the front nine and five more at the turn to total 17 under-par-127 to grab a stroke lead over 14-year-old sensation Ratchanon Chantananuwat in the fifth and final circuit of the Thailand TrustGolf Tour series.

“I just wanted to stick to my game plan but it turned out I made nine birdies without any bogey,” said Witchayapat whose round of 63 matched the course record set by Ratchanon, the first round leader, on Monday.

“I hit the iron well and my short game was unbelievable. I created myself a lot of birdie opportunities from 2-3 yards to the pins. The court sets up pretty easy to shoot low scores. But it depends on whether or not you capitalize on your chance,” added the young gun who has yet to savour a maiden victory. His best finish occurred at the November’s Singha Laguna Phuket Open where he signed off at lone sixth.

“I’m so excited to be on the lead again. My first time was at the Singha Masters in Chiang Rai two weeks ago, and I wasted my chance (in the final day). Hopefully I can make it this time. At this point I hope to win. Anything can happen in the game of golf,” added Witchayapat who settled at joint 10th in Chiang Rai.

Boy wonder Ratchanond produced a spectacular back nine performance where he shot four birdies and an eagle on the 14th hole to finish with a 65 and 16 under.

“It was a totally different scenario at the back. I played poorly at the front but everything just went my way at the back. Once I made that eagle, I was so pumped and got my momentum back,” said Ratchanon whose round three plan is to exert pressure on the more experienced players on the lead.

“I may be only 14, but I will try to play like a mature man and intimidate them. If you play like a kid, they will not take you seriously, to be honest,” he said.

Coming at joint third was Sadom Kaewkanjana who has the most wins in 2021 with four titles and has never finished outside the top 10 in all 10 starts. He casted a second round 64 for a total 15 under-par-219.

“Overall, I played a good standard of golf without a bogey. My iron just worked really well, hitting close to the pins several times and made some good putts,” said the 23-year-old player from Narathiwat.

“For the weekends, I will have to stick to the same routine by hitting to the right positions. On this course, you have to hit the iron well to create your opportunities. But it will be tougher if there are strong winds,” said Sadom who captured three titles on the All Thailand Golf Tour and one on the Thailand PGA Tour this year.

Two-time Thailand TrustGolf Tour winner Prom Meesawat, with a bogey free 64 and a total 219, was again in contention for the title.

“I don’t want to pressure myself by setting a particular goal. What I need to do is to hit to the good positions to create birdie chances and be very careful with some tough holes,” said Prom, winner of the second and fourth Thailand Mixes series.

Four shots off the lead at lone fifth was two-time Asian Development Tour winner Itthiphat Buranatanyarat who submitted a scorecard of 66.

Rising star Chanoknan Angurasaranee, with a 68, was at tied sixth on 132 along with Thaya Limpipolpaibul, the latter with a 67.

The tournament is being staged under strict protective protocols against COVID-19. ATK Swap test is provided for players, personal caddies, player’s company and officials. Only those who test negative are permitted to participate in the tournament. Furthermore, fans who produce negative ATK results within 72 hours before the tournament are welcome at the course.

Teen Prodigy Ratchanon Steals Limelight in Thailand Mixed #5 at Aquella

Whiz Kid Ratchanon Chantananuwat relied on sharp ball striking to open his campaign with an immaculate 63 after round one of the Bt5 million The Last Chapter, the fifth circuit of the Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf series, at the Aquella Golf and Country Club in Phang-Nga on Tuesday.

Teeing off at the back nine, the 14-year-old boy sank seven birdies and one eagle on the first hole to establish a stroke lead over star players like two-time winner Prom Meesawat, LPGA veteran Pornanong Phatlum, and 17-year-old Chanoknan Angurasaranee and rookie Witchayapat Sinsrang at the par 72 landscape which measures 7,018 yards for the men and 6,179 yards for the women.

“I’m not greedy but I should have made more birdies,” said the 14-year-old teen prodigy. “My ball striking is very good. I hit 17 greens, made birdies from nine holes and narrowly missed my birdie chances from seven holes,” said the wonder kid who won five straight best amateur titles on the All Thailand Golf Tour (ATGT)  in 2021.

Things could have gone wrong for the talented Ratchanon after he miscalculated a shot that hit the pathway before landing into the pond on the 16th. But he managed to save par and went on to shoot four more birdies plus an eagle chip from the bunker on hole No 1.

“It was a turning point on the 16th. If I ended up with a bogey, I could have lost my momentum and finished with a bad score,” added the world No 651, the youngest in the top 700.

“If I can keep striking the ball like this, I stand a very good chance at winning. I won’t hope for another nine under tomorrow. Just hitting five under every day will do,” Ratchanon said.

Former world top 30 Pornanong produced four birdies at the front and repeated the same margin at the back to enjoy a bogey free 64 to follow at second in her first start at the mixed event.

“I putted really well today and the green condition really suits my game. This is my first time playing this format and I’ve got to learn that the guys play quite fast and aggressive. The men’s game is fun to watch,” said Pornanong, three-time runner up on the LPGA including the 2018 Women’s British Open.

“My game plan for the next three days is to hit the fairways and be prudent with some holes which are quite narrow. But I will go for the flag positions if necessary,” she added.

Prom who won the second Thailand Mixed (with Chapchai Nirat) in Chiang Mai and the fourth in Hua Hin had nine birdies against one bogey on the 18th to also settle for a  first round 64.

“My shots are getting better than in the previous weeks. I set myself up in several good positions and capitalised on my chances. The course sets up in a perfect condition. It’s quite beautiful and new for everyone, so we still have to get used to it more,” said Prom.

Unfancied Witchayapat, 24 from Nakhon Ratchasima, fired an eagle on the first hole, seven birdies and one bogey to join the leading group.

“My iron shots are sharp. A 64 first round is beyond my expectations. The course condition really favours me,” said Witchayapat who posted two top 10 finishes on the ATGT this year.

High-sodium food products likely to be slapped with ‘salinity’ tax: Kasikorn centre

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

The government expects to collect up to THB88 billion of ‘salinity’ tax in 2022 from high-sodium food products to promote a healthy lifestyle, the Kasikorn Research Centre said on Wednesday after a study.

High-sodium food products likely to be slapped with ‘salinity’ tax: Kasikorn centre

Citing research by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and the Nephrology Society of Thailand, the centre said the average daily consumption rate of sodium stands at 3,636 milligrams, or 1.8 teaspoons of salt per person, which is two times higher than the World Health Organisation’s recommendation of 2,000 milligrams, or 1 teaspoon.

Therefore, the centre said, the government is preparing salinity tax collection guidelines for next year based on the amount of sodium in food products.

The expected THB88-billion tax in 2022 would be collected from 18 per cent of the total ready-to-eat and instant food products on the market.

The centre predicted that the products most likely to be slapped with the tax would be instant noodles, frozen food, instant porridge, ready-to-eat meals, canned fish and snacks in that order.

It also said the state would use a ladder tax rate based on sodium content, which is similar to the sweet-beverage taxation.
Meanwhile, the centre suggested that the salinity tax should be collected directly from manufacturers with an appropriate duration for producers to adjust.

It urged the government to educate the public on the risks of consuming a high amount of sodium, while promoting a healthy lifestyle with proper measures besides collecting the salinity tax.
