Bangkok’s MINE Smart Ferry electric passenger boat service “Urban Line”, between Phra Nang Klao and Sathorn, has resumed services. Two new routes will be added to the service from December 20, namely “Metro Line” from Rama 7 Pier to Sathorn Pier and “City Line” from Pinklao Pier to Sathorn Pier.

The fare will stay at 20 baht throughout the line until yearend. In 2022, the fare on Metro Line will be adjusted to a flat 25 baht, while the fares for the City and Urban lines will remain 20 baht.

The schedules for the lines are:

Deputy Transport Minister Atirat Ratanasate said that up to 20,000 people use the Urban Line daily thanks to the Skytrain.

He added that the ministry plans to deploy 15 more boats with a capacity of about 150 passengers in the third quarter of 2022. He said these boats will be able to navigate bridges even when the level of the Chao Phraya River is high.

Four of the nine inmates who escaped their temporary holding cell in Nakhon Pathom’s 11th Infantry Regiment were captured on Saturday, while the hunt for the rest intensifies.

Apolice officer said the prisoners used a metal blade to cut the iron bars, adding that the tool was left behind near a toilet.

The escapes were spotted on CCTV in Bo Phlap subdistrict at around 2am on Saturday.

Inmates Ekkarat Paengklan, 18, and Natthakorn Matwangsaeng, 24, surrendered to police, while Paithoon Mekhlongbaeng, 36, and Bamrung Wongsawang, 43, were nabbed while trying to flee.

Ekkarat, Paithoon and Bamrung face drug abuse charges, while Natthakorn faces robbery charges.

Pol Maj-General Chomchawin Purthananon, chief of the Nakhon Pathom provincial police station, said the inmates’ relatives have been contacted and the hunt for the remaining escapees has been accelerated.

He called on the convicts to surrender immediately, otherwise, they will face more charges apart from breaking out of jail.

Meanwhile, Pol Lt-Colonel Worachai Arakrat, chief of the Nakhon Pathom Central Prison, said inmates are temporarily held at the 11th Infantry Regiment to undergo screening for Covid-19 before they are sent to the central prison.

NIDA Poll conducted a nationwide survey titled “Legal Casinos” from December 6 to 8. In the survey, 1,318 respondents aged 18 and above and from different backgrounds were asked four questions. Here are their answers:

Should casinos be legalised in Thailand?

46.51%: No, because it creates addicts, causes family conflicts, debt problems and crime. Gambling goes against Buddhist precepts.

21.25%: Yes, because the government can collect taxes to develop the country and Thais will not have to travel overseas for gambling. Illegal gambling will be difficult to wipe out despite the presence of legal casinos.

18.13%: Yes because it will stimulate the economy and generate more money.

10.32%: Not quite, because gambling is wrong and can lead to more debt and crime problems.

Wearing warm clothes, exercising or consuming hot drinks to keep warm is far safer than drinking alcohol, the Department of Medical Services (DMS) warned on Friday.

The DMS Princess Mother National Institute on Drug Abuse Treatment (PMNIDAT) said alcoholic drinks can warm you up, but the body’s temperature automatically drops while sleeping, which can cause a shock and result in fatality.

The PMNIDAT suggested that those who feel cold should exercise regularly and eat healthy meals. It said exercise stimulates the body and produces warmth from inside. It also advised people to wear winter attire, constantly drink warm beverages and consume more vegetables and fruits to build up their defences.

People struggling with alcohol or drug problems can call the PMNIDAT hotline at 1165, visit the institute in Pathum Thani or check out its website. They can also go to a Thanyarak Hospital in Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Songkhla and Pattani.

The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) is encouraging people to watch the Geminids meteor shower from Monday midnight to dawn on Tuesday.

In a Facebook post on Friday, NARIT said the centre of the meteor shower is around the Gemini constellation with a maximum fall rate of 150 meteors per hour.

However, the institute said, the meteors will be more visible after the moon sets at 2am on Tuesday and in dark areas.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has deployed teams to ensure that all entertainment venues, eateries and tourist attractions in the capital are complying with measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang said on Saturday that this step is being taken because Covid-19 cases in communities and tourism venues in Bangkok and six tourism pilot provinces are expected to rise.

“The teams comprising officials from BMA and related agencies along with police officers and soldiers will ensure that all venues are adhering to Covid-19 prevention measures, such as maintaining distancing, wearing facemasks, providing hand sanitiser and screening visitors,” he explained.

He added that BMA is also conducting proactive Covid-19 tests in communities, markets and venues every two months to ensure patients are separated as soon as possible.

Ministry of Public Health reported on Sunday (December 12) morning that in the past 24 hours there are 3,787 new patients who tested positive for Covid-19, 5 of whom have been found in prisons.

Death toll increased by 20, while 5,606 patients were cured and allowed to leave hospitals.

The country’s total caseload from Covid-19 stands at 2,168,646 – 2,095,859 of whom have recovered, 51,616 are still in hospitals and 21,171 have died.

Separately, another 41,894 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, 63,520 their second shot and 39,009 a booster, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationwide to 97,321,750.

According to Worldometer, confirmed cases globally had risen to 269.98 million on Sunday, 242.71 million of whom have recovered, 21.96 million are active cases (88,823 in severe condition) and 5.31 million have died (up by 5,425).
 
Thailand ranks 24th in the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 50.76 million, followed by India with 34.68 million, Brazil with 22.18 million, the UK with 10.77 million and Russia with 9.98 million.

The Thailand Meteorological Department said on Sunday (December 12) that the moderate high-pressure system still covers upper Thailand.

Morning cool to cold and light fog are forecast in the Northeast. Morning cool and light fog are forecast in the North, the Central and the East regions.

On the North and the Northeast mountaintops, cold to very cold weather is forecast in the North and cold weather is forecast in the Northeast.

“People over upper Thailand should keep healthy due to the variable weather and should be careful of poor visibility,” the department said.

“Farmers in the upper North should prepare for crop’s damage due to isolated light rains.”

The northeast monsoon prevails over the Gulf and the South is weakening. Less rain and isolated thundershowers are likely in the lower South.

The 24-hour weather forecast for different regions:

North: Cool and fog in the morning. Isolated light rain in the upper part; temperature lows of 16-19 degrees Celsius, highs of 29-33 °C; temperature on hilltops is likely to drop to 7-14 degrees Celsius.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) said it expects anti-establishment protesters to gather at Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong intersection from 4pm on Sunday and will dispatch crowd-control teams accordingly.

“Tomorrow’s protest is likely to be led by the Ratsadon group and their affiliates to demand the abolition of the Criminal Code’s Article 112 [lèse majesté law],” MPB spokesman Maj-General Jirasan Kaewsaengaek said on Saturday.

“Protestors are likely to start marching from three spots, namely Phloenchit, Ratchadamri and Rama I roads toward the intersection. People are advised to avoid these routes from Sunday afternoon.”

Jirasan said officers will set up checkpoints around the intersection to ensure nothing illegal is carried into the protest areas.

“Police will adjust the strategy accordingly in case protestors change the venue or rally format,” he said.

Meanwhile, deputy police spokesperson Pol Colonel Krisana Pattanacharoen said on Saturday that police have been working on 801 cases related to political rallies in Bangkok this year and of them 406 cases have been submitted to the prosecutors.

With the holiday season coming up, the Department of Health has advised all restaurants to strictly adhere to the following prevention measures:

• Clean tables immediately after customers leave and display a sign showing they have been cleaned.
• Disinfect all contact points and toilets every one to two hours.
• Keep utensils clean and provide a separate spoon for shared dishes.
• Provide customers with gloves at buffets or self-service counters.

• Place a bottle of alcohol gel at every table or keep one within easy reach. In food courts, every stall should have a bottle of alcohol gel for customers to use.
• Maintain a one to two-metre distance between tables. If there is no space, then each table should be separated with a partition. In airconditioned restaurants, each table should be two metres away and diners should not be allowed to sit directly across from each other. Restaurants cannot be crowded.
• Allow diners to stay for no more than two hours.
• All restaurants should be well-ventilated and must open all doors and windows at least half an hour before turning on the air-conditioners. If possible, restaurants should ventilate the area every hour and keep ventilation fans on at all times.
