Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) revealed on Thursday (December 9) that slot reservation of international flights has increased 10 per cent since Thailand reopened the country to vaccinated visitors on November 1. 

According to AOT’s report, international flight slot reservation from November 1 to December 31 has increased by 1,518 flights from 15,614 flights being reserved before November 1, bringing the number of total confirmed international flights throughout the year to 17,132.

AOT also reported that flight slot reservation in December increased from 7,649 to 9,483 flights, or 24 per cent jump from the previous month.

AOT attributed the increase in international flights to the rising demand for travel during high season around year end. 

In the first week of this month (December 1-8), AOT has recorded a total of 2,159 flights, or an average of 270 flights per day. This number is a 7.6 per cent increase from average flight in November at 251 flights per day.

Ministry of Public Health reported on Friday (December 10) morning that in the past 24 hours there are 4,193 new patients who tested positive for Covid-19, 21 of whom have been found in prisons.

Death toll increased by 28, while 7,863 patients were cured and allowed to leave hospitals.

Cumulative cases in the country are at 2,160,780 with 21,112 total deaths.

The Thailand Meteorological Department said on Friday (December 10) that the moderate high-pressure system covers upper Thailand. Cool to cold weather with light fog in the morning is likely in the North, the Northeast, the Central and the East. Mountaintops in the North and the Northeast will be cold to very cold. People should take care of their health due to variable weather and be careful of poor visibility.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon across the Gulf and the South is weakening and leads to isolated thundershowers of the lower South. 

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours is as follows:

North: Partly cloudy and cool to cold weather with fog in the morning; temperature lows of 15-20 degrees and highs of 28-33 degrees Celsius. Temperature on hilltops is likely to drop to 7-14 degrees Celsius.

Northeast: Cool to cold weather with light fog in the morning; temperature lows of 17-20 degrees and highs of 29-31 degrees Celsius. Temperature on hilltops is likely to drop to 8-15 degrees Celsius.

Central: Partly cloudy and cool weather with light fog in the morning; temperature lows of 19-22 degrees, highs of 31-33 degrees Celsius.

East: Partly cloudy and cool weather with light fog in the morning; temperature lows of 21-24 degrees, highs of 31-33 degrees Celsius; waves a meter high and 1-2 meters offshore.

South (east coast): Partly cloudy with thundershowers in 20 per cent of the areas; temperature lows of 22-25 degrees, highs of 29-32 degrees Celsius; waves 1-2 meters high.

South (west coast): Partly cloudy with thundershowers in 10 per cent of the areas; temperature lows of 22-25 degrees, highs of 31-33 degrees Celsius; waves a meter high and 1-2 meters offshore.

Bangkok and surrounding areas: Partly cloudy and cool weather with light fog in the morning; temperature lows of 22-24 degrees, highs of 31-34 degrees Celsius.

The Marine Department is working on coastal development to promote tourism by starting to improve beaches, adding sand to a width of 50 metres and a length of 3.5km, Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said on Thursday after monitoring progress of the project and encroachment in Chonburi province.

The construction is set to take five months and is expected to be completed around the middle of 2022.

Saksayam said that he planned to ask the Marine Department to develop the marina port to create opportunities for water tourism. At present, one marina in Chonburi is privately owned.

He also said there have been some cases of encroachment but these buildings have not yet been demolished because the Marine Department does not have a budget for the purpose.

He has asked the department to prepare details and propose a THB100 million budget request for Cabinet consideration on December 21.

Precisely 47 per cent of Thais are concerned about the Covid-19 Omicron variant, while people have become more aware of mask wearing in public areas, according to the latest Anamai Poll.

Department of Health director-general Dr Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai said the survey also found that 10.5 per cent of people were concerned about the government relaxing various measures and reopening the country that could cause another outbreak, while 9.7 per cent were worried that people would drop their guard by wearing a mask under their chin, not maintaining a social distance and not washing their hands regularly.

Meanwhile, the survey in November found that 94 per cent of the population wore a mask at all times in public, 91.5 per cent washed their hands after touching anything considered not clean, and 86 per cent maintained a social distance of at least 1-2 metres.

The MRT Pink Line, to operate on the Khae Rai-Minburi route, started tests on Thursday from the Minburi Maintenance Centre to Bang Chan Station.

Construction of the monorail is 82 per cent complete, with 83 per cent of civil work finished and 80 per cent of the electric train operation system ready.

The Pink line is expected to open in 2022 on the Chaeng Wattana Government Complex-Minburi section first, except for Nopparat Ratchathani Station.

Its other two sections – Chonburi-Chaeng Wattana and Khae Rai-Nonthaburi Civic Centre – will open later.

The Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) said on Thursday that they aim to wrap up the hit-and-run case against Red Bull scion Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya within 14 months, with the completion expected by the end of 2022.

Nate Naksuk, the deputy attorney-general at the time when the case first made news, had dropped the final charge of reckless driving against Vorayuth.

A total of 14 people have been accused and an audio tape review is currently underway while further investigations will take place, the NACC said.

Prosecutors will indict Vorayuth on two counts of reckless driving causing the death of another person, with this case having a term of 15 years and expiring on September 3, 2027, Office of the Attorney General deputy spokesperson Prayut Petchkun said on Wednesday.

Another charge against Vorayuth is alleged drug use (cocaine), which will expire on September 3, 2022. With the defendant having fled abroad, police need to apply to get him extradited to Thailand before this charge expires.

A 41-year-old Thai man who arrived from Congo under the Test & Go programme is likely to be the fourth Omicron case in Thailand, the Public Health Ministry announced on Thursday.

The man’s Covid-19 test result is expected in 1-2 days. He had reportedly received two AstraZeneca jabs.

The ministry also confirmed that two Thai female translators, who arrived in the kingdom after attending meetings in Nigeria on November 28, have tested positive for the Omicron variant.

Bangkok has been accepting Covid-19 vaccine registrations since December 1 for residents of any nationality, no matter how many shots they received earlier, Governor Aswin Kwanmuang announced on Thursday.

“The campaign aims to vaccinate as many people as possible in Bangkok to build herd immunity against Covid-19, especially now that the new Omicron variant has been reported in Thailand,” he said.

“People can register even if they are not Thai, or have received two, one or no jab before. Those who have had Covid-19 can also register for a booster shot provided they have recovered for at least three months.”

The vaccines are being administered at the Bangkok Youth Centre (Thai-Japanese) in Din Daeng district and 11 hospitals: BMA General Hospital, Taksin Hospital, Charoen Krung Pracharak Hospital, Wetchakarunrasm Hospital, Ratchaphiphat Hospital, Luang Phor Taweesak Hospital, Lat Krabang Hospital, Sirindhorn Hospital, Bang Khun Thian Geriatric Hospital, Khlong Sam Wa Hospital and Bangna Hospital.

Those who are interested can register via the QueQ application by scanning the QR Code on the app and choosing your preferred vaccine location. A group of 10 or more can register in a batch by scanning the QR Code for Google Form registration. Vaccines for this group will be provided at the Bangkok Youth Centre only.

Alternately, walk-in registration is also accepted at the centre.

Registration is only for those over 18 years.

An ID card or similar document and certificate of vaccination are also required when receiving the jab.
