Kawasaki, Japan – A knife-wielding attacker killed a 12-year-old schoolgirl and a man before stabbing himself to death in a rampage outside Tokyo Tuesday that also injured more than a dozen, including several children.

The mass stabbing in the town of Kawasaki, south of the Japanese capital, was a rare attack in a country with one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the developed world, and there was no immediate detail on the suspect’s motive.

Kiyoshi Matsuda, deputy director of the Nippon Medical School Musashi Kosugi Hospital, told reporters that the 12-year-old schoolgirl and a 39-year-old man had succumbed to their injuries.

Local media reported that the suspected attacker, a man in his 50s, had also died of his wounds after turning the knife on himself. Emergency services said at least 16 others had been injured in the attack.

“It is a very harrowing case. I feel strong anger,” Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in televised remarks.

“I offer my heartfelt condolences to the victims and hope the injured recover quickly.”

According to local media, eyewitnesses saw a middle-aged man clasping a knife near the bus stop where the children were waiting, shouting “I will kill you”.

A local man living nearby, who identified himself as Matsumoto, 25, said he went outside after hearing screams.

“It’s hard to describe what it was like, how it sounded. It wasn’t girls having fun, it was a sound that was absolutely not normal,” he told AFP.

“I saw a man lying on the street. I also saw a girl hunched over on the ground. There were also five or six girls, maybe they were the ones who screamed… There was blood all over them.”

– ‘Prayers and sympathy’ –

The attack occurred during the busy early morning commute as workers headed to their offices and children to school. Fire department officials said they received the first emergency calls shortly before 8:00 am local time (2300 GMT Monday).

The scene of the attack was still swarming with emergency personnel hours later, with three police vans parked around the spot to block it from view.

Emergency workers set up an orange medical tent to treat the wounded, and ambulances and fire engines were parked nearby.

A white school bus with blue stripes was parked at the site, with the name “Caritas Gakuen (school)” written on the side, said an AFP correspondent at the scene.

The bloodshed came as Donald Trump wrapped up a state visit to Japan, and the US president offered his “prayers and sympathy” to the victims as he met troops outside Tokyo.

Standing aboard a Japanese military ship, he said that “all Americans stand with the people of Japan and grieve for the victims and for their families”.

A local resident, who declined to give his name, said children attending the Caritas school lined up for the bus at the site every day.

“If you live in this neighbourhood, everybody knows that these kids are there,” the 66-year-old told AFP.

“I’ve been in this area for a long time, I cannot believe that somebody targeted this bus and targeted these small children.”

– ‘Serious injuries’ –

An official at the St Marianna University School of Medicine said a “woman in her forties and three girls… suffered serious injuries.”

“They will go through surgery for the injuries, mainly to their heads and necks. After that, they will be transferred to the ICU,” said Takehito Otsubo, the hospital’s assistant director.

Police earlier told AFP one suspect had been detained and an eyewitness told local media that the man had stabbed himself.

“I saw a man holding a knife… I couldn’t see clearly, but he apparently stabbed himself in the neck,” one eyewitness told NHK.

The broadcaster said two knives were spotted at the scene, but there was no immediate confirmation.

Violent crime is extremely rare in Japan, and children often travel to and from schools alone.

The country has famously strict gun control regulations and gun crime is unusual, but there have been a few high-profile stabbing attacks.

In 2018, a man was arrested in central Japan after stabbing one person to death and injuring two others aboard a bullet train, an attack that prompted new security measures on the famed rail service.

And in 2016, a man stabbed 19 people to death at a disability centre south of Tokyo in what he described as a mission to rid the world of people with mental illness.

Robotics firm announces academic alliance to prepare for future jobs

Breaking News May 28, 2019 10:15

By The Nation

Asean UiPath, a leading robotic process automation (RPA) company, has announced an academic alliance programme in Asean, following partnerships with leading institutes of higher learning, including in Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand.

Through the academic alliance, UiPath will work with educational institutions to equip students with critical automation skills, teach them how to leverage RPA in the workplace and prepare them to work alongside software robots. UiPath aims to train over 50,000 Asean students and professionals over the next three years for the automated workforce of the future.

The academic institutes will include King Mongkut’s University of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) in Thailand.

“Economic development is not just a technological goal, it is also a human one,” said Tom Clancy, senior vice president for learning at UiPath. “The Asean region is going through a period of rapid economic and technological transformation and the workplace of the future will look very different to the workplace of today,” he said.

“We need to prepare and train our youth for a more automated future, one where the ability to work alongside robots will be as important as the skills they bring to bear. That is why UiPath is committed to training more than one million students globally in the next three years as we understand that education and re-skilling are vital if we are to thrive in a digital future.”

In addition to Thailand’s KMITL, the institutions will include Singapore’s Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Institute of Technical Education, ITE College West, and the Philippines’ Asia Pacific College (APC)

UiPath will also partner with NTUC LearningHub, the leading provider of continuous education and training in Singapore, serving over 180,000 training places per year.

The UiPath RPA courses will be incorporated into existing curriculum offered by higher learning institutions in Asean, helping to institutionalise RPA within academia and prepare students and educators with in-demand automation skills. The courses will be developed by UiPath Academic Alliance instructors who will train and qualify educators who, once certified, will be able to teach students and other educators.

UiPath will provide content to educate students about RPA, teach how automation is applied to business processes, and equip technical students with RPA developer skills. UiPath is to provide the curriculum, course content, UiPath software platform, learning materials, regular educator training and tools. Where possible, UiPath would also connect academic institutions with UiPath’s own customers to facilitate on-the-job learning.

Since its announcement in October 2018, more than 100 colleges and universities have adopted RPA as part of their curriculum, allowing students to develop skills needed for the jobs of the future.

Vietnam’s interbank e-payment system handled 37 million transactions worth nearly 21 quadrillion dong ($896.2 billion, Bt28.5 trillion) in the first quarter of the year, up 23 per cent and 17.8 per cent respectively over last year, according to the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV).

SBV Payment Department deputy head Nghiem Thanh So said domestic payment through bank cards continued to increase in the period, reaching 65 million transactions worth a total 171 trillion dong.

The number and value of transactions performed online in the first three months of the year rose by 68.8 per cent and 13.4 per cent over the same period of last year. Most banks have brought new technologies into their payment activities while accelerating modern and safe payment methods to attract consumers.

Infrastructure and technologies for non-cash payments have seen increased investment and improved quality.

By the end of March, the country had 18,668 ATMs and 261,705 POS cards.

Nguyen Thi Hien, deputy head of the central bank’s Banking Strategy Institute said non-cash payment activities had seen positive changes since last year. However, the country should have more solutions to encourage new payment methods, he added.

Vietnam is aiming to cut the ratio of cash transactions to 10 per cent lower than the national plan of non-cash payment market for 2016-20.

According to the central bank’s statistics, more than 90 per cent of the country’s population are not accustomed to online and mobile payments.

At present, commercial banks have applied advanced technologies such as QR codes and contactless payment to enhance service security and clients’ satisfaction.

According to PwC’s 2019 study of 27 nations and territories, mobile payments in Vietnam are growing fastest globally.

The country now has 76 organisations providing payment through the internet, with 41 offering mobile payment services.

Vietnam E-commerce Association (Vecom) vice chairman Nguyen Ngoc Dung said many Vietnamese people shop online by paying in cash as both sellers and buyers were hesitant to pay fees to banks for their transactions.

He said Vecom would work with organisations providing payment services through internet and mobile phone to reduce fees and promote non-cash payment.

National Payment Corporation of Vietnam (Napas) deputy director-general Nguyen Quang Minh, said the seven banks under his jurisdiction will start issuing ATM chip cards that meet EMV standards, a worldwide standard for payment cards that provides global interoperability between all cards and the acceptance network. They will replace magnetic strip cards starting from May 28.

They are Vietcombank, VietinBank, BIDV, Agribank, Sacombank, TPBank and ABBank, which have together issued about 70 per cent of the cards in the country.

Some other banks have also registered with Napas to do so.

The SBV plans to complete 30 per cent of the task this year and replace all 75 million magnetic strip ATM cards in the country by the end of 2021.

The central bank also chose June 16 as “Cashless Day” in Vietnam to encourage cashless shopping and transactions. Consumers will enjoy preferential policies from credit institutions, payment intermediaries and retailers, and service providers.

SEOUL

FOLLOWING the hype over how to incorporate the fifth-generation network into autonomous driving since the network began commercial service here last month, the initial step toward the futuristic goal is expected to take off in Seoul later this year.

South Korea’s biggest mobile carrier SK Telecom and the Seoul City government last Thursday said they had agreed to develop 5G-based maps for self-driving. By the second half of this year, 1,700 vehicles will be used to create a map by providing real-time updates of the traffic system, they said.

The agreement is expected to help Korea gain an edge in 5G technology and autonomous driving. Officials said if the plan is implemented as scheduled, Seoul would become the first global city to use the 5G network for public transportation.

“Live updates of high-definition maps will lay the ground for a new industry, such as smart mobility,” said Ko Hong-seok, who manages the traffic system in Seoul. “By enhancing cooperation with the local government, we will help Seoul lead other global cities in future transportation.”

The announcement comes as part of the mobile carrier’s efforts to develop advanced network infrastructure for autonomous driving. Last month, SKT signed an agreement with the Incheon Free Economic Zone to develop 5G-based self-driving infrastructure.

The sophisticated map system in Seoul will be based on traffic information of 12 crowded streets, stretching up to 121 kilometres. After creating the map, SKT said it would work with the government to verify its accuracy. To make the map with “centimetre-level” accuracy, the Seoul city government will deploy 1,700 buses and taxies on the roads later this year. Equipped with an “Advanced Driver Assistance System,” the selected public transport systems will be able to update traffic information in real time.

Unlike the previous Global Positioning System, ADAS allows drivers to “communicate” with other vehicles and objects on the roads, SKT said. It can help drivers commute safely by detecting potential hazards and warnings using such information automatically.

TRAVEL AGENCY Chan Brothers Travel is being investigated by Singapore’s privacy watchdog after the personal data of more than 500 of its customers was found to be publicly accessible.

Screenshots provided by a tip-off seen by The Straits Times showed that the website exposed data such as names, NRIC numbers, passport numbers and travel plans of Chan Brothers Travel’s customers.

The Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) said it has been notified of the incident and is investigating.

Responding to ST queries, a spokesman for the travel agency said that it takes full responsibility for the incident and that it was notified of the vulnerabilities on May 16.

It is currently working with its vendor, Aodigy Asia Pacific, to |ascertain the cause of the data exposure.

“Upon notification of the vulnerabilities, we immediately took action to address the matter including containing the extent of vulnerabilities, assessing the extent of impact and reporting the incident to PDPC,” the spokesman said.

“Some of the measures undertaken require continual monitoring, review and action, as it involves information that has been publicly cached. We have shut down the site meanwhile.”

When ST visited the website on Friday, some of the data could still be publicly accessed via cached versions of the site, which are temporarily available versions of websites.

When asked if Chan Brothers Travel had informed any of the affected customers, the spokesman said it was progressively contacting affected customers.

“We are currently investigating this matter and ascertaining the extent and nature of information that was revealed.

“We would like to assure our customers that no sensitive financial and booking information was revealed,” she said.

“That said, we recognise that no personal data should be exposed at all in any manner and that it is our responsibility and priority to protect our customers’ personal data.”

Andrew Goh, the co-founder of local fintech start-up Factors Platform, informed ST of the insecure data.

He had come across it as he was in the midst of gathering datasets for his work.

He discovered that he could look up client inquiries and post-tour surveys on the Chan Brothers Travel site, which contained the personal information.

Said Goh: “I have found close to 500 entries in aggregate [inquiries and surveys], close to 450 of them are unique clients.”

He said he had found the data on May 15 evening and decided to go down to the travel agency’s office the next day to notify them about the issue. There, he met its IT director, who, he said, told him that the issue would be sorted out.

Later on May 16, Goh said a Chan Brothers Travel staff member called him to inform him that the problem had been fixed.

But when Goh checked again in the evening, the data was still publicly accessible.

The Chan Brothers spokesman said Goh was still able to view the information that evening as it “was stored in cached pages by the search engines’ servers”.

When asked what recourse Chan Brother will be providing its customers, its spokesman said that it will be “[addressing] their individual concerns personally”.

Vietnam: Asia’s next high-performing economy

HO CHI MINH CITY

VIETNAM should take advantage of the next wave of digital technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, internet of things and cloud-based services to become Asia’s next high-performing economy and improve the living standards of its residents, experts urged at a meeting held in Ho Chi Minh city last week.

Dr Lucy Cameron, lead author of the “Vietnam’s Future Digital Economy Towards 2030 and 2045” report and Australian senior research consultant, said the country should carefully navigate a number of risks while undertaking digital transformation.

“Vietnam has been one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and has already become one of the most dynamic countries in the East Asia region,” she said.

A boom in digital hardware and software exports has occurred, and Vietnam’s young population is rapidly taking up new mobile internet services, the report said.

The government is also implementing industry 4.0 policies to modernise major existing industries and develop new ones, it added.

Digital transition is expected to add about 1.1 per cent to GDP growth each year for Vietnam through 2045, while the country’s growth is fast and inclusive, which is suitable for digital transformation, according to Cameron.

But to sustain high growth, Vietnam will need to overcome substantial challenges, she said.

The population is ageing, while climate change and rapid development are straining the environment and food production as the country rapidly urbanises.

The workforce needs to learn higher-level skills, especially as jobs are becoming automated in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

Nguyen Van Binh, chairman of the Central Economic Commission, said that mastering the digital economy created an opportunity for Vietnam to maintain rapid and sustainable growth through the next phase of development.

“Strong leadership and institutions will be key in Vietnam’s development across all economic sectors, including the private sector,” he said. “Digital transformation resulting from this strong leadership will unblock bottlenecks to promote further economic development.”

Chu Ngoc Anh, minister of science and technology, said the report provided a blueprint for the country to plan for its digital future.

“It is a tremendous example of successful collaboration between our national innovation systems,” he said.

Craig Chittick, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, said the report was the first major output of the Aus4Innovation partnership between Australia and Vietnam.

“It will guide our work over the next three years as we deepen the collaborative linkages between our two countries and help strengthen the Vietnamese innovation system as it adapts to the challenges and opportunities of the digital economy,” he said.

Australia has worked with Vietnam to identify seven megatrends affecting Vietnam’s future digital economy.

These include the impact of emerging digital technologies, new export markets for Vietnam, the development of modern digital infrastructure, the push to smart cities, the rise of digital skills and services, and changing consumer behaviours.

Megatrends informed the report’s development of four potential future scenarios, which provide a blueprint for decision-makers to plan for Vietnam’s future digital economy.

With a young population, high investment and a location in the heart of high-growth Asian economies, Vietnam has a good chance of surging forward with new digital tools, if the transition is managed well.

In 2017, the “Vietnam’s Future Digital Economy Towards 2030 and 2045” report was launched by the ministry of science and technology and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.

The report provides economic modelling for potential scenarios of growth for Vietnam’s digital economy up to 2045.

It aims to serve as a strategic decision-making tool for leaders in government and businesses negotiating the new wave of digital innovation and the next phase of economic development.

The first report “Vietnam Today”, which was released last year, examined the state of Vietnam’s macro-economy and digital economy.

The present report, which was released in May, updates this research and examines the state of Vietnam’s economy and digital economy in early 2019, with a main focus on the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

The report is part of the Vietnam’s Future Digital Economy project, an innovative joint venture between the governments of Vietnam and Australia.

The project is the first major output of the Aus4Innovation programme launched in 2017 by the governments of Vietnam and Australia.

GS Home Shopping invests in home-sharing startup

GS Home Shopping, a leading home shopping channel operator in Vietnam, said it had invested $1.2 million (Bt38.19 million) in Luxstay, a Vietnamese home-sharing platform that targets the Southeast Asian market.

The deal marks GS Home Shopping’s second such investment in an e-commerce startup based in Vietnam.

In January this year, the South Korean company invested $3 million in another e-commerce venture firm, Leflair, which focuses on premium-branded products for women, men, children and homes.

Vietnam, one of the fastest-growing countries in the travel industry, is a destination favoured by South Korean tourists for its low cost and diverse attractions.

The quarterly figure for South Korean tourists visiting Vietnam soared more than 24 per cent in the first three months of this year, exceeding the 1 million mark for the first time, industry data showed.

Given the current pace of growth, the annual figure is widely estimated to exceed 4 million for this year.

After topping the 1 million level for the first time in 2015, the annual number of South Korean tourists to Vietnam rose to 2.42 million in 2017 and 3.44 million last year. – The Korea Herald

L’Oreal, Alibaba announce AI mobile acne testing app

French personal care company LOreal and Chinese tech giant Alibaba have announced the world’s first mobile acne testing application powered by artificial intelligence at the Viva Technology conference last week.

The app, Effaclar Spotscan, developed by La Roche-Posay, a brand of L’Oreal, and Alibaba allows those that have acne but with limited access to dermatological support to conduct professional skin self-testing and provides them with personalised and solutions.

The app uses AI technology to generate test reports based on three selfies uploaded to it. After testing, the app will provide users with personalised skin care suggestions based on the state of the skin.

It will also recommend the corresponding skin care product combinations and support the purchase of products online. If the app detects more severe skin problems, it can put the user in touch with a skin care expert for one-on-one consultations.

Kevin Chen, vice-president of L’Oreal China and also general manager of Active Cosmetics Division said, “The division’s mission is to create a beautiful future through better health. Effaclar Spotscan is a true beauty tech innovation that is tailored to meet everyone’s unmet health needs. Its precision of skin testing cannot be achieved without L’Oreal’s century-old history of scientific expertise and the professional guidance of hundreds of top dermatologists around the world.”

Added Chen, “We have analysed more than 6,000 images of consumers from various races, with different skin types and varying levels of acne issues, and from different genders, to ensure that there is enough basis for a precise test,” Chen added.

Alibaba’s AI technologies provide Effaclar Spotscan with substantive support. Based on acne images collected and dermatologists’ analysis results, AI scientists adopted deep-learning technologies, including object classification and detection to create a neural network model for acne testing that explains the linkage between visualsed acne information and type of lesions, to generate a comprehensive testing result.

Wang Yeming, general manager of Alibaba Cloud EMEA, said, “Millions of consumers on Tmall and Taobao are plagued by acne. Through AI technology, they can now gain a better understanding of the state of their skin and choose the skin care solution that is right for them in an effective and convenient manner without even having to leave their homes”. – China Daily

Samsung introduces video AS service

Samsung Electronics Service, an aftersales subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, said it will introduce a video consultation service for customers who experience problems.

When customers make contact, a text message with a link to the video system will be sent. It will connect customers with service engineers, allowing them to show problematic parts of their products directly to the engineers.

“The service will help customers explain better the problems they face, while saving their time with no need to visit a store,” said a company official.

The service won’t charge customers, and doesn’t require users to download an extra application.

They can apply for it at the firm’s call centre. – The Korea Herald

China showcases soft power at big data expo

NEW DELHI

APART FROM INDIA, data companies from the US, the UK, Russia, Singapore, Canada, Israel, Malaysia and many other countries are taking part in the “International Big Data Expo” in China. Global big names include Google, Dell and Pivotal.

New Delhi’s stand on the China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) notwithstanding, Indian software companies are participating in a big way at the expo, where China is showcasing its soft power on the global stage.

The four-day expo, which has attracted 300 companies from more than 30 countries, got off to a spectacular start on Sunday in Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province, which for long was considered a less-developed area due to its remoteness and isolation. The region has been on a fast lane to build itself into China’s big data valley ever since it hosted the first big data expo in 2015.

The event aimed to showcase the latest scientific and technological achievements in big data worldwide, organisers said.

China to dominate cyber technology

Several companies at the expo are from countries that have joined the BRI, the signature initiative of Chinese President Xi Jinping to connect different continents through rail and road networks to promote China’s trade and commercial ties.

India has refused to join BRI on the grounds that its flagship project, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), runs through the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

However, Indian software companies including NITI Limited, Zoho Corporation and Paramatix Technologies have set up big stalls at the expo and are drawing huge crowds.

A top representative of an Indian company, who did not wish to be identified, told a group of visiting Indian journalists that China could dominate the world in the field of cyber technology in the coming decades, given the infrastructure created by it.

India, he said, currently lacked the infrastructure for big data. In fact, the Chinese were trying to woo Indian companies to set up their bases in China.

Indian companies were being offered incentives like higher income tax relief and the facility to repatriate their earnings in China.

Chinese officials say Xi has been personally very keen on the success of the annual big data expo at Guiyang, as it fits into his aim to make China the world leader in the field of big data.

The fifth edition of the big data expo began only after Xi’s congratulatory message to the participants had been read out.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Weng Chen, a |member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of |China (CPC) Central Committee, said big data was the next stage in the data revolution, which ensures sustainable development.

American cryptologist and security technologist Whitfield Diffie said big data would be everywhere and its security would affect everything – individuals, business, governance and critical infrastructure.

“Artificial intelligence can be used to produce entirely new ways of controlling computers,” he cautioned.

Video-game addiction has been officially recognised as a mental health disorder by the World Health Organisation.

WHO member states have revised their classification of “Diseases and Related Health Problems” to include gaming addiction as a mental health disorder.

The change, which will come into effect on January 1, 2022, identifies gaming addiction as falling into the subcategory of disorders due to substance use or addictive behaviour, such as alcoholism, gambling addiction and drug abuse.

According to the WHO, gaming addiction is characterised by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.

However, not all excessive gaming behaviours are considered gaming addiction, as the world health agency explained that for gaming disorder to be diagnosed, the behaviour pattern must have lasted at least 12 months and significantly impaired the person’s life.

Austrian chancellor set to lose no-confidence showdown

Breaking News May 27, 2019 18:36

Vienna – Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz was set Monday to lose a no-confidence vote in parliament, which will see him removed from office over a corruption scandal that brought down his coalition government.

Norbert Hofer, chief of the far-right Freedom Party (FPOe), said Monday that his party “will support” the motion, which is also backed by the main opposition Social Democrats (SPOe).

The move comes just after Kurz celebrated a big win for his conservative People’s Party (OeVP) in Sunday’s European elections, which is projected to gain 34.9 percent of the vote and two extra European parliament seats.

It comes in the wake of the so-called “Ibiza-gate” scandal, which saw FPOe leader and Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache resign from both posts after he was caught appearing to offer public contracts in return for campaign help from a fake Russian backer.

That led to Kurz ending his coalition with the FPOe and calling early elections for the autumn, but the opposition say the 32-year-old leader must also take responsibility for the scandal.

The no-confidence vote against Kurz and his government is set to take place in a special sitting of parliament later Monday, making him the shortest-serving chancellor, as well as the first in post-war Austrian history to be removed in this fashion.

While the environmental Jetzt party is also expected to back the motion against the chancellor, the liberal NEOS party said it would be voting against it to avoid further instability.

Once Kurz’s government is removed, it would be up to President Alexander Van der Bellen to appoint experts to lead the government and all the ministries until the elections.

 – Far-right setback –

The far-right, meanwhile, seemed to have suffered a setback in Sunday’s vote over “Ibiza-gate”, falling from 19.7 percent to 17.2 percent and losing one of their four MEPs.

The scandal erupted following the publication on May 17 of hidden-camera recordings filmed in a luxury villa on the holiday island of Ibiza a few months before Austria’s last parliamentary elections in 2017.

Amid a welter of embarrassing comments, Strache appeared to allude to a scheme channelling political donations through FPOe-linked foundations in order to avoid legal scrutiny.

After Strache’s resignation, Kurz also sacked FPOe interior minister Herbert Kickl, arguing he could not oversee any possible investigation into his own party’s wrongdoing.

FPOe ministers responded by walking out of the government en masse, leading to Kurz appointing experts to take their place in an interim government.

– Paragon of stability –

When he first became chancellor in late 2017, Kurz was widely hailed on the European right as someone who could successfully tap into surging anti-immigration sentiment while projecting a polished demeanour.

Since the crisis broke, he has projected himself as a paragon of stability in a turbulent political climate, and analysts say this will be a key message for him to use.

But even before the current crisis, Kurz found himself constantly having to bat away criticism for alleged extremist sympathies among FPOe members.

The opposition has placed the blame for the current debacle squarely at the feet of Kurz himself for having invited the far-right into government in the first place, saying he had ample warning of the unsuitability of the FPOe for government.

Kurz has trod a fine line in his statements since the crisis broke, admitting he found the FPOe’s antics “hard to swallow” but insisting he had no other choice.

“There was no other party which was ready to form a coalition with us,” he told journalists on Thursday, when asked whether he regretted the coalition.
