Two alleged Rohingya drug dealers found dead in Bangladesh

Breaking News January 06, 2019 01:00

Dhaka – Bangladesh police on Saturday found the bullet-ridden bodies of two alleged Rohingya drug dealers in a southeastern coastal town notorious for its connection with the Myanmar meth trade.

Teknaf town police chief Prodip Kumar Das said the bodies were found lying next to a highway beside the sea and some 10,000 meth pills were recovered from their possession.

“Both of these refugees were… notorious drug dealers in the region. We’re suspecting they were killed in a gang fight over sharing profits,” he said.

The police said they were investigating the deaths but did not provide further information on the two men.

Over 720,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled a brutal military crackdown in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state since August 2017 and joined some 300,000 refugees already living in squalid camps in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district.

Bangladeshi authorities say local kingpins use the refugees — trapped in poverty and unlikely to return home any time soon — to transport “yaba” pills which are made in Myanmar meth labs.

Yaba is a methamphetamine-based, caffeine-cut stimulant that translates as “crazy medicine”.

The coastal town on the Naf river that divides the two neighbours is a key entry point through which yaba enters the South Asian nation’s multi-million dollar drug market.

In May Bangladesh launched a violent anti-drug crackdown which saw the deaths of at least 250 drug dealers, including 26 in Teknaf in the last three months.

Experts have compared the campaign with the Filipino anti-drug war of Rodrigo Duterte, in which police say they have killed nearly 5,000 alleged users and pushers — although rights groups say the toll is at least triple that.

France’s ‘yellow vest’ protestors back on the streets

Paris – France’s “yellow vest” protestors were back on the streets again Saturday as a government spokesman denounced those still protesting as hard-liners who wanted only to bring down the government.

Several hundred protestors gathered on the Champs Elysees in central Paris, where around 15 police wagons were also deployed, an AFP journalist said. Marches were underway in several other cities across France.

On Friday, government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux denounced those still protesting as “agitators who want insurrection and, basically, to overthrow the government”.

This is the eighth Saturday of protests called by the grass-roots movement. The numbers turning out have fallen steadily since the start of the demonstrations in November.

But the arrest on Wednesday of Eric Drouet, one the movement’s spokesman, sparked anger among his supporters. Paris police picked up Drouet, who already faces trial for carrying a weapon at a previous demonstration, and detained him for around 10 hours.

In Paris, organisers called for a march from the City Hall to the National Assembly (parliament) building, and a rally on the Champs Elysees, the scene of violent clashes at previous demonstrations.

The latest opinion poll, published on Thursday by Odoxa Dentsu, indicated 55 percent public support for the “yellow vest” protests.

The government has deployed police around France to deal with the protests, backed up by specialist response units, sources told AFP.

The “yellow vest” demonstrations — named after the high-visibility jackets worn by the protesters — began in rural France in November over increased fuel taxes.

It ballooned into a wider revolt against President Emmanuel Macron’s pro-market policies and governing style.

Macron initially refused to make any concessions, but in mid-December, after weeks of violence, he scrapped the planned fuel tax rises and promised extra cash for minimum wage earners and tax cuts for pensioners.

The protests have caused the biggest political crisis of his 20-month presidency.

Policewoman fired after nude videos spread online in catfishing case

A policewoman from Makassar, South Sulawesi, has been fired after her suggestive selfies and nude videos were spread online by a man who catfished her through social media.

The woman, a police brigadier, thought the man was a police officer from Lampung province, but he was found to be a convicted murderer who is serving 10 years at a Lampung prison.

Her firing was also based on alleged affairs that she had with two regional police officers in South Sulawesi.

“She was involved in immoral activities that violated the code of ethics and made her no longer eligible to be a member of the National Police,” Makassar Police chief Sr. Comr. Wahyu Dwi Ariwibowo said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Mariana Amiruddin from the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) criticized how the police handled the case, saying they did not take into account a victim’s or woman’s perspective. She said it was not just that the policewoman lost her job for taking private photos that later spread online without her consent.

She said the police ethics council should have treated the incident as a cybercrime and considered the policewoman a victim before firing her.

“As a victim, she should be protected because this includes sexual violence through cybermedia,” Mariana told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

According to the commission’s records, sexual cybercrime involving the spread of videos, photos or chat logs are the most commonly reported cases.

“In sexual cybercrime cases, women are the ones who suffer the most. Firing the victim only worsens her physical or emotional pain and it does not deter the offender,” Mariana said.

Speaking about the alleged affairs, Komnas Perempuan’s Sri Nurherawati said it was unfair to punish the policewoman but not the two regional police officers.

She added that gender discrimination without legal due process was common in cases of extramarital affairs.

Human rights activist Nursyahbani Katjasungkana said law enforcers, especially the police, did not act with victims’ perspectives in mind, which often resulted in women being victimized.

She said there was a system for improving gender awareness among law enforcers under the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister but that the necessary steps had not been taken.

“Law enforcers and our society prefer to be a vagina watchdog rather than deal with corruption or governmental issues. They are addicted to sexual morality rather than public office ethics and morality,” she said.

Light ash fall was noticed in Tegalmulyo and Tlogowoatu villages, Klaten, Central Java, after Mount Merapi spewed lava toward Kali Gendol Sleman in Yogyakarta on Friday night.

Klaten Disaster Mitigation Agency head Bambang Giyanto said the ash fall occurred at around 9.30 p.m. and lasted for 20 minutes.

“Last night we noticed a thin ash fall in Tegalmulyo and Tlogowatu in Kemalang district,” Bambang said, as reported by kompas.com on Saturday

The agency then headed to the two villages to distribute around 5,000 masks to the residents.

“Based on our monitoring, there is no rain from the ash anymore this morning. It only happened last night,” Bambang said.

Five things to watch for at Golden Globes

Breaking News January 06, 2019 01:00

By AFP

Hollywood’s brightest stars will hit the red carpet on Sunday for the first major awards show of the year: the Golden Globes, honoring the best in film and television.

Tens of millions of viewers are expected to tune in, but what should you be watching for? Here is our quick guide to the event, which will take place in Beverly Hills, California:

Will Gaga’s ‘Star’ turn lead to Oscar?

One of the big stories of Sunday night is sure to be the success of “A Star Is Born,” Bradley Cooper’s remake of the popular music romance that has five nominations including best drama film and best actress for Lady Gaga.

The pop diva could even take home two trophies, as she is also up for best song honors for “Shallow,” the runaway hit from the soundtrack.

The film — which stars Gaga as an unknown singer who rises to fame with the help of Cooper’s fading, booze-addled rocker — could be the singer-songwriter’s ticket to an Oscar.

A Globes win would only boost her chances of an Academy Award nomination — voting begins the day after the Globes gala, closes on January 14, and nominations are announced on January 22.

‘Vice’: will mixed reviews sink it?

“Vice,” Adam McKay’s quirky biopic about former US vice president Dick Cheney, was the top nomination getter for the Globes with six. But upon its theatrical release on Christmas Day, it earned decidedly mixed reviews.

Will that sink its chances at the Golden Globes?

Most critics agree that Welsh actor Christian Bale’s transformation into Cheney is exceptional, but some quibble with the film’s decidedly glib treatment of the politician’s rise to power.

It is (curiously) competing in the comedy categories, and none of the awards experts polled by prediction website Gold Derby have it winning for best musical or comedy, instead favoring royal romp “The Favourite,” race dramedy “Green Book” or “Mary Poppins Returns.”

Bale has far better chances, and is seemingly locked in a tight race with Viggo Mortensen (“Green Book”).

How will ‘Roma’ do at Globes?

“Roma,” Alfonso Cuaron’s critically acclaimed film chronicling his childhood in Mexico City, is not competing for best film honors at the Globes due to an eligibility issue, but will vie for best foreign film and best director awards.

Many believe Cuaron’s personal drama will be a major Oscar winner — and that a best director win on Sunday would solidify its chances.

“Cuaron is riding a huge wave of critical raves for ‘Roma’ and if there is any such thing as a front-runner when it comes to the Globes, this is it,” Paul Dergarabedian of media analysis firm ComScore told AFP.

TV: old favorites vs new guard

The television awards at the Golden Globes are sort of a wild card — they are preceded by the Emmys, but the eligibility periods are not the same, meaning you end up with a mix of award-winners and new programs.

The 90-odd members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who choose the Globes winners, are known for their maverick picks.

So, on Sunday, top Emmy winner like “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” will be pitted against new shows like “Homecoming” starring Julia Roberts and Netflix comedy “The Kominsky Method.”

Will Roberts earn a trophy for her first starring role in a television show? Or will Globes host Sandra Oh take home an award for her work on the Emmy-nominated “Killing Eve”?

What about the hosts?

Can Oh and co-host Andy Samberg save the flailing awards show format?

In the age of social media, watching a three-hour gala with commercials in real time is increasingly unpopular.

Last year, 19 million people tuned in for the Globes. In September, the Emmys posted an all-time low audience of about 10.2 million.

Oh and Samberg earned laughs when they teamed up to present an award at the Emmys.

So far, their quirky promos for the gala have been well-received. And in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the pair promise a show high on fun and low on politics.

Tune in on Sunday.

Washington – Police in California on Saturday said they were responding to a shooting with “multiple victims” at a bowling alley near Los Angeles.

In a tweet, the Torrance Police Department said there were “reports of shots fired with multiple victims down.”

The Los Angeles Times reported the shooting took place at Gable House Bowl. Police urged people to “stay away from the area.”

Torrance, a coastal city, is located around 20 miles (30 kilometers) southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Floods, blackouts after Thai storm, but tourist islands spared

Breaking News January 05, 2019 14:25

By AFP

Nakhon Si Thammarat – Floods and blackouts caused by Tropical Storm Pabuk left nearly 30,000 people in evacuation shelters across southern Thailand Saturday, as relieved tourists stranded on islands further north were spared the worst and began to plot routes home.

Pabuk, a once in three-decades weather system, packed winds of up to 75 kilometres (45 miles) an hour and brought heavy rains and storm surges as it lashed the entire south of the kingdom on Friday, downing power cables and causing widespread flooding.

A fisherman died in southern Pattani province early Friday as high waves smashed into his boat and another crew member was reported missing.

But the storm tacked away from the key tourist islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao where large numbers of tourists hunkered down for 24 hours in heavy rains, unable to leave as airports closed and ferry services were cancelled.

“There were no casualties, there is some sunshine today and I’m confident some tourists will be able to leave today as ferries and flights resume,” Kittipop Roddon, Koh Samui district chief said.

But “red flag” warnings banning swimming off what are normally sun-baked paradise beaches at this time of year were still in place.

“It’s all over. All 10,000 tourists are safe… I am relieved,” Krikkrai Songthanee, district chief of neighbouring Koh Phangan, an island famed for its full-moon parties, told AFP, adding only minor damage had been caused by high winds.

But holidaymakers keen to leave the islands face long delays as transport links are slowly reopened on Saturday.

The storm was downgraded early Saturday to a depression with wind speeds slackening as it moved into the Andaman Sea, the Meteorological Department said.

Pabuk made landfall on Friday afternoon in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, south of the tourist hubs on the Gulf of Thailand, hammering the coastal province with rain.

Authorities warned of flash floods as some parts remained inundated by a combination of rainfall and storm surges.

Around 200,000 people were left without power as dozens of electricity poles were toppled by high winds or falling trees.

Some 30,000 customers remained without power early Saturday, according to an update by the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

A similar number of people remained in evacuation shelters, waiting for floods to recede and power to be restored, it added.

Pabuk struck in peak tourist season, a blow to the cash-cow sector that is integral to Thailand’s economy.

The kingdom is expected to welcome a record 40 million visitors this year.

Clashes between fighting forces continues in Myanmar

Since the fighting between Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) and Pa-O National Liberation Organization (PNLO) in December last year, monasteries and homes have been burnt down, local residents stranded in the battle and some fled to safer places.

Both RCSS/SSA and PNLO are blaming each other for the clashes.

According to the news report released by RCSS-owned Taifreedom news agency on January 4, PNLO officials called a meeting with local Pa-O nationals on January 1 forcing them to serve in the Pa-O National Liberation Army (PNLA). They were asked to move to other places if they are not willing to serve in their army. Consequently, some villagers had to flee to the eastern part of the Thanlwin River.

Likewise, PNLO/PNLA’s information department issued a press release on January 4 accusing RCSS of forcing Pa-O locals from several villages of Narmon Village-tract in Mongpang Township to leave their homes on December 31. Fearing the threat, about 300 local villagers fled to safer places through the eastern part of the river.

Nyi Rang, in-charge of UWSA’s liaison office in Lashio, said Wa southern military region-171 warmly welcomed and accepted the internally displaced persons (IDPs). He added that they were being accommodated in Khaiklon Village in the southern Wa region.

“We are providing them with accommodation, food and healthcare. Whoever they are, ethnic Shan or Pa-O, we will take care of them. How long they will have to stay there depends on the situation. We will not force them to leave,” said Nyi Rang.

A total of 62 households with 231 Pa-O people are taking shelter in Khaiklon Village. Of them, 94 are less than 12 years old.

Jakartans agree with plastic ban: Environment agency

Despite their dependence on plastic bags, Jakartans mostly agree with the city administration’s plan to issue a policy restricting plastic bag use, according to a survey conducted by the Jakarta Environment Agency.

“Nearly 80 percent surveyed agreed with a plastic ban and were also willing to carry their own bags [while shopping],” Waste management division head at the agency, Rahmawati, told tempo.co. on Thursday.

The survey on the public’s perception of the plastic ban was conducted door-to-door with most respondents being housewives. However, the agency did not provide details on the number of respondents surveyed.

Rahmawati said the survey was launched as part of preparations for the new gubernatorial decree on single-use plastic restrictions expected to be signed by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan this month.

The initiative was taken following Jakarta’s constant waste woes that stand at 2.5 million tons per year. From the figure, 357,000 tons is plastic waste.

Single-use plastic bags contribute 1,900 to 2,400 tons of waste per year, which equals 300 million plastic bags.

Agency head Isnawa Adji said he had submitted the decree draft to Anies. He expressed hope that the draft could be signed as soon as possible to start the plastic ban in the city.

Anies said the draft of the decree still needed corrections. He aimed at implementing the ban while designating a substitute for plastic.

“Housewives would be troublesome if we don’t prepare the substitute [for plastic],” he said on Thursday.

Kolkata in India and its surroundings are not expected to be affected; Alipore Meteorological department office has alerted fishermen not to venture into the sea from January 5 to 7.

Pabuk, a deep depression that made a landfall in Thailand on Friday, may reach the Andaman Sea on January 5.  The Alipore Meteorological department office has accordingly alerted fishermen not to venture into the sea from January 5 to 7.

“Kolkata and its surroundings are expected not to be affected by the depression. Near the Andamans, heavy rainfall is expected during that period due to the depression.”

“Fishermen are advised not to venture into the deep sea during 5 to 7 January,” the official stated.

Meanwhile, after the chilly weather towards the year end, the temperature rose a bit for Kolkata and the districts. “The northern wind is not strong now, which affected the weather earlier but we are expecting the winter to continue for a few more days” said a Met official.

The minimum temperature recorded today was 12.6 degree Celsius and the maximum temperature was 26.1 degree Celsius.

A maximum relative humidity of 93 per cent and minimum relative humidity of 33 per cent were recorded, according to the Meteorological department.
