True Corporation received the Gold Telly Awards 2019 in the Religion TV Program Category for its TV “True Little Monk : A Wisdom Training Programme for Novices”.

Suphachai Chearavanont, Chief Executive Officer, Charoen Pokphand Group and Chairman of the Board of True Corporation Plc, represented the firm in receiving the award in a ceremony held in New York, USA recently.

The programme was the world’s first reality documentary programme on air worldwide, featuring 12 candidates from different nationalities and cultures being ordained as novices.

It is the only one from Thailand and Asia that was granted this award, which is in the higher level than from the three previous awards received on the same stage before.

This success reflects the programme’s quality and is a great moral support for Charoen Pokphand and True Groups in putting efforts in developing and publicizing decent content as well as continuously making contributions to the society.

CP Vietnam Corporation (CPV), an investment arm of Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods), has announced that both by-catch and by-product fishmeal used in the company’s operation will be certified International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation Responsible Supply (IFFO RS) or IFFO RS Improver Programme (IFFO RS IP) within 2022.

Dr. Sujint Thammasart, DVM, Chief Operating Officer, Aquaculture Business of CP Foods, said that 100% of by-product fishmeal supplies to CPV’s aquaculture business is now certified IFFO RS. Some of the fishmeal from Vietnam is also shipped to Thailand.

For by-catch fishmeal, CP Foods and CPV are currently taking part in pilot programmes of IFFO RS IP to develop a credible criteria for multi species fisheries in Thailand and Vietnam.

Moreover, CPV is engaging with local fishmeal producers to encourage them to join IFFO RS IP. The programme aims at guiding the suppliers with high potential to apply IFFO RS standard toward sustainable practices.

In order to aid them through the application, CPV has encouraged its fishmeal suppliers to apply a sustainable sourcing policy and guidelines. The policy was launched for its partners in Bangkok and extended to Vietnam in late 2017.

“CPV, as CP Foods’ manufacturing arms in Vietnam and a member of the Vung Tau (Vietnam) Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), has encouraged our partners to apply for our sourcing policy, which is designed to improve their working process and traceability.” he said.

He also noted that the IFFO RS IP programme is the first step for the fishmeal factories in Vietnam towards global recognition.

“Joining the improver programme from IFFO that is the leading marine ingredients organisation, will enhance competitiveness of our suppliers. Their products will be globally recognised,” Sujint said “It will also ensure our clients, as well as consumers across the world, that our products are made from responsible and slavery-free sources.”

Besides IFFO standards, four of the company’s aquaculture farms in Vietnam have received the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Certification, an international certification standard on sustainable seafood production. The remaining farms are preparing to apply for the certificate.

Also, CPV is working on a digital traceability system in the shrimp business, which will enable the company to track its fishmeal supply back to the fishing boat.

In Thailand, CP Foods reported 100 per cent of fishmeal used in Thailand’s operations are sourced from the by-products fishmeal which is traceable and sourced from IFFO RS or the IFFO RS IP certified facilities and in accordance with CP Foods’ Fishmeal Sourcing Restrictions.

Additionally, the by-product fishmeal must not include species at risk from extinction as defined by the World Conservation Union: IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and be traceable by a third party.

PTT expects G-20 to end trade war

PTT expects a trade war resolution at G-20 meeting while PTT businesses has been adversely affected by the trade war.

Trade tensions between the United States and China have already affected PTT petrochemical business as China imports fewer raw materials and petrochemical products, said Chansin Treenuchagron, chief executive officer of PTT Pcl, Thailand‘s largest oil and gas company.

“The PTT group has been affected since the first quarter of the year as our profit margin has narrowed down,” he said.

To mitigate the impact, PTT has already reduced its dependence on Chinese market and seeks new markets such as India and former Soviet Union  countries, he said

Raw materials used to produce single-use plastics were also affected as many governments and businesses had started to ban the products due to climate change concerns.

However, sales of biochemical products produced by PTT is on the rise, as they are used to substitute plastic, he said.

Chansin expects Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to reach some compromises as they meet at the G-20 summit in Japan this weekend as the trade war affects every country.

Overall Thailand’s exports have been hit by trade tensions, leading to sinking of exports in the five months at 2.7 per cent year on year and sharply falling at 5.79 per cent in May alone. Many research houses have recently revised down their economic growth projections to 3 per cent from around 4 per cent.

While it is known to many that China and Japan are Asia’s solar pioneers, few are aware that Banpu, a Thai energy company, has established a strong foothold in China’s and Japan’s solar market with its solar farm operations in these two countries for more than five years.

Banpu said it has a strategic vision to build its alternative energy business based on “Greener and Smarter” approach. By bringing the experiences and expertise from its overseas solar farms back to Thailand through Banpu Energy Technology Business Group, the company is offering a clean energy option to companies across industries while playing its role to support Thailand’s smart city endeavour as part of the government’s Thailand 4.0 economic model.

Kanokwan Jitchobtham, a Banpu managing director, said: “Solar power is one of the most preferred alternative sources of energy, which prompted many countries around the world to invest continuously in new solar generation capacity and technologies. Based on ‘Global Market Outlook for Solar Power 2018 – 2022’ report by SolarPower Europe, renewable energy has grown by more than doubling from 2007 to 2017, when its total share reached 12.1 per cent of total global power output. Solar is the fastest growing power generation source, contributing as many as 98 GW to the combined 260 GW of net power generating capacity added in 2017 by all power generation technologies.

“With a vision to grow our alternative energy business based on “Greener & Smarter” strategy and to drive forward our solar power business, BANPU formed our Energy Technology Business Group in 2017 to offer solar installation service and integrated smart city solutions,” she said.
