TrueMove H, the mobile-phone service brand of True Corp, on Tuesday announced the successful outcome of tests of its 5G network’s speed and performance in a real-life environment, reaching up to 18 gigabits per second (Gbps) for the first time in Thailand – 20 times faster than a 4G network.

True has been conducting the 5G trial at the True Branding Shop at ICONSIAM, a popular new landmark in Bangkok.

TrueMove H will now hold a 5G showcase to build awareness among businesses, students and the general public, preparing them to step forward seamlessly into the 5G network era.

The showcase will take place from December 14 to January 31 at the True Branding Shop, located on the third and fourth floors at ICONSIAM.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission last month granted both True and Advanced Info Service (AIS) permission to test the 5G technology for a limited period.

AIS has conducted testing since November 22 at the AIS Design Centre, located on the fifth floor of The Emporium shopping mall in Bangkok.

Share prices of some listed terrestrial digital-TV broadcasters surged in morning trading on Tuesday following reports of the telecom regulator’s plan to launch measures to ease their financial difficulties.

The stock price of RS rose 5.16 per cent to close at Bt16.30 per share at the end of the morning session on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, while that of Workpoint Entertainment went up 3.51 per cent to close at Bt29.50.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) on Monday announced its plans for next year, which focus on extending a lifeline to the ailing digital-TV licence-holders and encouraging telecom operators to bid for new spectra.

The watchdog will kick off the new year by holding an auction of part of the 700MHz band, totalling 2 x 45MHz of bandwidth.

Part of the proceeds will be used to continue the NBTC’s subsidy of the digital-TV broadcasters’ cost of transmitting their programmes through satellite networks.

The NBTC wants to extend the subsidy period to 2022 after the current period expires at the end of next year.

The regulator will also use its own funds to continue to subsidise half of the broadcasting network rental fees of digital-TV licence holders through 2022.

The NBTC will also seek ways to help the broadcasters not to have to pay the remaining licence fee upfront.

JAPAN’S istyle Inc, which operates “@cosme,” the largest comprehensive site for cosmetics and beauty in that country, has opened an @cosme store at Iconsiam, the first of its kind in both Thailand and the Asean bloc.

The cosmetics specialty store is based on the concept of “Experience, Discover, Your @cosme,” was opened through the consolidated subsidiary, istyle Retail (Thailand) Co Ltd.

The company has set its future plan to open five @cosme stores in Thailand within the next three years.

The @cosme brand relies heavily on leading smart technologies. Merchandise is selected based on fulfilling the needs of customers through analysis of a word-of mouth-database and of the history of user behaviour on @cosme. It also uses IT to create and operate the sales floors, and has implemented ideas from web service KPIs that place an emphasis on frequency of visits and visitor counts.

The @cosme store Lumine Est Shinjuku, the first @cosme store to open (in 2007), boasts the No one position in sales volume among all cosmetics specialty stores in Japan. There are now 26 stores in Japan and seven stores overseas and the chain is committed to expansion. Compared to other Asian countries, Thailand has a large market for cosmetics and is noted for its high interest in beauty. Thailand’s beauty and personal care products market was valued at approximately Bt198.13 billion in 2017, and that market is expected to grow further with a forecast worth of Bt260.74 billion by 2022.

Attention among consumers who are shopping for beauty and personal care is shifting through multi-brand beauty stores, which offer the full range from mass to high-end products in one shop. In fact, @cosme arrives in Thailand with many locals already aware of the brand and its popularity in Japan. Based on these circumstances, the company aims to further expand the @cosme brand recognition even further in Thailand through its first store in Thailand at Iconsiam.

The location was selected with high expectations that Iconsiam would be a new landmark in Bangkok. The layout of the first store in Thailand leans on the knowledge accumulated in Japan. The characteristics of this store include a wide product selection from affordable cosmetics to department store cosmetics; counselling to address concerns about skin and makeup; an environment that encourages customers freely trying out nearly all products; and an event space that provides experiences that customers will want to share. As well, there is a play space for children to have fun while in the store.

The main brands available at @cosme store at Iconsiam include @cosme nippon, Kanebo, Lunasol, Anna Sui, Paul & Joe, excel, Flowfushi, Sekkisei, Kate, Neal’s Yard Remedies, Perfect One, Cher Couleur and Curel.

CP Group aims for all plastic to fit 5Rs by 2025

Charoen Pokphand Group has introduced a “Sustainable Packaging Policy” in which all plastic packaging is to be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 following the company’s 5Rs framework.

Suphachai Chearavanont, CEO of Charoen Pokphand Group, yesterday said CP Group takes seriously the major global problem of plastic waste and recognises the importance and necessity of tackling the issue. The new policy for sustainable packaging will be in line with the company’s sustainable business practices, and part of its environmental policy, and would set the direction and framework for waste management from the production processes to throughout its value chain.

As plastics are a key packaging material for numerous products, the dependency on them has led to a pollution problem that requires urgent solutions, he said.

The sustainable packaging policy is based on a commitment to protect the environment and to create public engagement aimed at positive behavioural change that meets the company’s 5Rs framework: re-educate consumers and raise awareness about plastic waste, reduce plastic consumption, recycle plastics, replace with alternative materials, and reinvent through research and development.

China-based Yili Group held a grand signing ceremony in Bangkok on November 29 to officially buy Chomthana, which is the largest domestic ice-cream company in Thailand.

The purchase is the latest move by the company to accelerate its internationalisation.

Yili earlier this year upgraded its European Innovation Centre in cooperation with Netherlands-based Wageningen University in the Global Dairy Mount Everest, and later introduced its products to Indonesia via a listing on the local market.

Pan Gang, president of Yili Group, said that acquiring Chomthana “is an important measure for Yili to gather global energy and deepen mutual benefit, and achieve a win-win situation”. Zhang Jianqiu, CEO of Yili Group, said: “In the process of promoting internationalisation, Yili always adheres to the concept of ‘openness, cooperation and win-win’, and devotes itself to the dream of ‘making the world healthy’.

With the deepening of global economic integration, Yili accelerates the pace of internationalisation with the help of “the belt and road”, the chief executive said.

From global networking to building a “global wisdom chain”, Yili continues to promote the global dairy industry with complementary resources, innovative synergy and mutual benefits, Zhang added.

Yili’s revenue growth rate remained in double digits from 2008 to 2015, and had exceeded 68 billion yuan (Bt323 billion) by 2017, ranking it first in the industry with year-on-year growth of 12.29 per cent.

The return on net assets has remained above 20 per cent for many years, ranking the company first in the world’s dairy industry.

The acquisition of Chomthan will further enhance Yili’s performance and deepen the win-win cooperation of the global dairy industry, the Chinese company added.
