THE Transport Ministry is pushing for the opening of the Blue Line extension on the Hua Lamphong-Bang Khae route, ending at Lak Song Station before schedule in September next year to boost passenger numbers.

Operator of the Blue Line subway, Bangkok Expressway and Metro Plc (BEM), expressed confidence that the number of passengers would rise 10 per cent and income would increase more than 10 per cent next year thanks to the Blue Line extension.

Deputy Transport Minister Pailin Chuchottaworn said that the Blue Line extension from Hua Lamphong to Bang Khae has seen much progress and the loop of its 10 stations, ending at Lak Song station, is expected to commence service ahead of schedule in September 2019. The extension of the Tao Poon-Thaphra route is expected to start service within 2020.

After the two Blue Line extensions of Hua Lamphong-Bang Khae and Bang Sue-Thaphra open services, the MRT Blue Line will have the complete loop and passengers will be able to travel to both the east and the west of Bangkok, which will help relieve congestion at Siam Station and Sukhumvit, Pailin said.

Pakapong Sirikantaramas, governor of Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), said that the authority has been discussing with the private sector to open the Blue Line extension of Hua Lamphong-Bang Khae ahead of schedule. But the new schedule is yet to be finalised as the project is waiting for the electricity system and train testing.

The service schedule for the Blue Line extension on the Bang Sue-Thaphra segment remains the same – April 2020, he said.

After the whole loop of the Blue Line subway opens in 2020, the number of passengers on the Purple Line’s Bang Yai-Tao Poon section is expected to reach 100,000 per day, thanks to more convenience for travel between Nonthaburi and Thon Buri. The current figure is 60,000 passengers per day.

The Pink Line Khae Rai-Min Buri section and the Yellow Line Lat Phrao-Samrong section are still on schedule.

Sombat Kitjalaksana, managing director of BEM, said: “Next year will be a good year for the company, as we will upgrade our service with more routes, more stations, efficiency and system improvement. We’re confident that when the Hua Lamphong-Lak Song section opens for service, there will be 100,000 more passengers per day and this will help increase the number of passengers by no less than 70,000 per day on the Blue and Purple Lines.”

Next year is expected to see a 10 per cent rise in the number of passengers, while income is estimated to grow more than 10 per cent thanks to the planned service commencement of the Blue Line extension.

This year is expected to see the number of passengers rise 5 per cent to about 330,000 passengers per day, while BEM’s income is forecast to increase 8 per cent, he said.

Every week, from Monday to Friday, about 360,000 passengers use the MRT Blue Line service each day. About 68,000 passengers use the Purple Line on Bang Yai-Tao Poon and about 70-80 per cent are passengers who transit to the Blue Line.

AIS Fibre, a fixed broadband operator, says it is teaming up with Nokia to provide residential customers with a new premium service that ensures a seamless Wi-Fi broadband experience reaching every corner of the home.

AIS Fibre customers in Thailand will be eligible to receive the Nokia WiFi Beacon 3 duo-pack for a special price which, once installed, should establish a whole-home meshed Wi-Fi network that significantly enhances ultra-broadband coverage and performance.

Many homes suffer from poor Wi-Fi performance. Speeds and reliability can be impacted by the number of connected devices and by interference from appliances like microwaves or Wi-Fi networks from neighbours. In addition, coverage is often inadequate due to dead zones from indoor walls. Solving these issues can be difficult, often requiring several access points to be installed.

The Nokia Wi-Fi solution eliminates these common home networking challenges and provides AIS Fibre customers with a true meshed Wi-Fi experience that is easy to install and delivers the whole-home coverage and performance needed to support ultra-broadband services.

Designed to detect 100 per cent of both Wi-Fi and non-Wi-Fi interference sources, the Nokia WiFi Beacon 3 automatically connects devices to the strongest channel to ensure a flawless experience, the firm said. Additionally, embedded software and analytic functions in the beacons automatically self-heal and optimise the Wi-Fi experience, eliminating the need for customers to manually manage the network to achieve optimal performance, it added.

Nok seeks to ease investors’ nerves

Corporate November 29, 2018 01:00

By THE NATION

BUDGET carrier Nok Airlines Plc (Nok) has sought to reassure investors that its moves to staunch its losses and create sustainable growth are on track.

Prawet Ongartsitthikul, acting chief executive officer of Nok, said that the airline is continuing to operate its business as set out in the plan to halt the losses, bring stability and promote continuous growth. The airline is now in the first phase of this plan, rushing to mop up the red ink on its balance sheet.

According to the carrier’s financial report to the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) for the third quarter of 2018, the company and its subsidiaries had a consolidated net loss of Bt1.515.26 billion, compared with a loss of Bt652.73 million for the same quarter last year.

“[Nok’s] financial statements are in difficulty as we all know, given that the overall situation is difficult to control and that has required us to have a ‘C’ (caution) sign posted,” Prawet said.

The SET posted the “C” sign on Nok on August 10 and it has remained as warning for investors on Nok’s financial risk after its shareholders’ equity fell to less than 50 per cent of the paid-up capital.

If the “C” sign remains in place for three consecutive quarters, the airline may need a capital increase, which would require approval from the board of directors and shareholders, Prawet said.

He conceded that Nok’s board has discussed a capital increase but the plan has not been finalised and has not yet received the board’s approval.

In response to a rumour of a planned sale of Nok’s stake to other airlines, he insisted that there has not been any negotiations on this matter. However, he said that in the future, if Nok has to expand its business, it may become necessary to find a partner.

“Next year, we hope to stop making a loss and we have to stop making losses for three consecutive quarters in order to move into the next stage – to bring stability and promote growth,” Prawet said.

“We believe next year will be a good year, particularly for the Chinese market. Our cabin factor is now high at 86 per cent. The plans for partners, cost reduction, income generation and more use of aircraft during night time will help us to increase income and widen the gap between income and cost.”

In the third quarter, Nok and other airlines were weighed down by external factors, ranging from high crude prices and currency fluctuations to a drop in the number of Chinese tourists.

Prawet said that there was a high chance the business would improve next year, thanks to factors such as decreasing crude prices, an increase in the number of countries awarded visa-free privileges and an improved Chinese market.

He said that, under Nok’s business strategy, the carrier will open additional routes in Japan, India and Vietnam. Services on these routes will get under way next month and in January.

In 2017, Nok raised capital twice. The low-cost airline offered 625 million new shares to existing shareholders at Bt2.40 apiece, but only 511 million new shares were subscribed to that year as Nok’s major shareholder Thai International Airways Plc did not exercise its right. Later, in October 2017, Nok launched the second capital increase, offering 1,135 million new shares and its public offering shares were two times oversubscribed.

Improved network among DTAC’s weapons for return to growth

Improved network among DTAC’s weapons for return to growth

Corporate November 29, 2018 01:00

By SIRIVISH TOOMGUM
THE NATION

TOTAL ACCESS Communication (DTAC) next year will focus on getting back to growth, says CEO Alexandra Reich.

That growth will be achieved through an intensive network quality improvement, redefining brand purpose to be more relevant to the market and customers’ needs, and by creating new growth engines for the future, Reich said.

DTAC will initially try to grow at the same rate as the industry at a stabilising market share by revenue, she added. Once DTAC is successful in stabilising its market share by revenue, its next step would focus on regaining the lost ground.

DTAC subsidiary DTAC TriNet obtained a 1800MHz licence totalling 2x5MHz bandwidth from the auction in August, and has already made the first instalment payment for the band. It also clinched a 900MHz licence totalling 2x5MHz bandwidth from the auction in October.

Competitor Advanced Info Service (AIS) group currently boasts the largest holding of 120MHz spectrum bandwidth, while True group and DTAC group each hold equal amounts of 110MHz bandwidth.

DTAC will keep investing heavily in network expansion in coming years, said Reich.

According to the recent filing of its third quarter financial results to the Stock Exchange of Thailand, DTAC has revised its full-year 2018 capital expenditures to a range of Bt18 billion to Bt20 billion. That would accelerate the 2300MHz-network expansion. The previous set range was Bt15 billion to Bt18 billion.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) intends to auction the remaining seven lots of the 1800MHz licence next year.

When asked if DTAC will participate in the auction of these remaining lots, Reich pointed to several factors, especially regarding the usage patterns of DTAC customers, that the company needs to consider before deciding whether to participate.

Even if DTAC assumed value in bidding for the lots to increase its customers’ network experience, it would still have to consider whether the auction conditions were acceptable and worth the investment, she said.

“For some time we have been advocating for the spectrum prices to come down and also for a change in the payment terms – and now it is time to make a change.”

DTAC will also have to anticipate what other spectrum bands will be auctioned in the near future. As NBTC does not have a spectrum roadmap, this remained an uncertainty, she added.

Reich said that as spectrum is the key telecommunication resource, and will have an impact on the country’s development, DTAC requests that the government and NBTC ensure the spectrum supply for industry is both sufficient and competitive. A spectrum roadmap would help investors decide and plan their long-term investments in the right spectrum bands.

The government’s support is much needed if the country would like to deploy 5G wireless technology in the next two years, Reich added.

The NBTC is aiming to get 5G service off the ground in Thailand in 2020. It recently approved requests from AIS and True to test the 5G technology during November 22 to December 15.

Reich said that there are precedent cases in advanced countries of collaboration between governments and the private sector on 5G deployment, which all parties could use as case studies on how to achieve the policy to implement 5G in 2020.

She added that the related parties should also work together to migrate 2G customers to 3G or 4G. It is also time to sunset 2G, as many other countries are doing, but this needs to be an industry-wide move, conducted by the NBTC.

Reich said that the full potential of 5G is still hugely misunderstood. Unlike 3G and 4G, 5G’s advent won’t simply be a case of telecom operators upgrading their networks and device makers rolling out new phones.

To be effective and sustainable, Thailand’s 5G strategy must engage entire industries, connecting businesses not only to consumers but also to other businesses in entirely new ways.

She said that DTAC sees a pressing need to build robust industry in which 5G can create value for all of Thai society. In that domain, DTAC benefits from the experience and support of its Norwegian strategic partner Telenor, which is leading the pan-European 5G project across four countries.

In Kongsberg, Norway, Telenor has already begun a full-fledged 5G pilot, with mobile broadband, autonomous vehicles and remote health services.

She said that the availability of new spectra and spectrum pricing for offering 5G in Thailand will need to be carefully reviewed so as to |promote 5G adoption, rather than cripple it.

Cryptocurrency pioneer plans security token offering

Corporate November 28, 2018 01:00

By Wichit Chaitrong
The Nation

Satang Corporation, one of the pioneers in the cryptocurrency business in Thailand, plans to raise funds by issuing a security token offering (STO), as part of its efforts to build a digital asset ecosystem that could help revitalise the bearish market for digital currencies.

Poramin Insom, founder and CEO of Satang Corporation, yesterday said his company would issue the STO by the end of this year or early next year to raise funds from investors worldwide.

Investors holding STOs would be like shareholders of listed companies; they could earn dividends should the firm generate profits.

Poramin was optimistic that investors would welcome it. “Unlike ICO [initial coin offering], STO will provide a more secure investment, as they will have rights similar to shareholders of listed companies,” he said.

He expected investors to like the STO as compared to ICOs, which guaranteed nothing.

STOs have evolved from ICOs, as issuers respond to the changing market demand and associated risks.

He admitted that the current market is not on his side, as the values of major cryptocurrencies have been falling sharply. For example, bitcoin is now trading at slightly over US$3,000 (Bt96,000), down from its peak of about $20,000 last year.

Trade wars, regulations and speculation have affected the valuations of digital currencies, he said.

Poramin is also the developer of Zcoin, a cryptocurrency that now trades at Bt160, down from its peak of Bt5,000 per coin.

He, however, was optimistic that the markets for digital currencies would expand if the ecosystem of digital assets is developed.

He said his company plans to develop Satang App, an e-wallet, which could allow consumers to make payments via Promt-pay infrastructure. The application will convert cryptocurrencies in the e-wallet to baht and shop owners will get baht.

The company also plans to promote a “Satang Shop”, which will accept cryptocurrency payments.

“We will start at tourist sites such as Phuket and Pattaya,” he said.

Satang Corporation will rebrand its exchange market for trading cryptocurrency to “Satang Pro” from the current TDAX.

TDAX is the second largest exchange in Thailand with daily trade volumes of cryptocurrencies estimated at Bt 100 million and about 30,000 investors trading daily, he said.

He said he had developed a trial trading tool for new investors who want to enter the market, in a bid to expand the number of investors.

The number of investors trading in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin via five exchanges in Thailand is estimated to be 300,000 and trade volume is currently at over Bt 200 million daily, down from a peak of Bt 1billion.
