‘Pro Mo’ and ‘Pro May’ lend their celebrity status to GULF’s meal-box initiative

May 25. 2020
By The Nation

It has been two months since Gulf Energy Development Public Co Ltd (GULF) first launched its free meal initiative, and now it will have golf ambassadors sisters Ariya ‘Pro May’ and Moriya ‘Pro Mo’ Jutanugarn helping out too.

GULF pledged more than 150,000 food boxes for 232 communities in Bangkok to help people cope with the Covid-19 fallout, and believes that this project has also indirectly helped boost the economy because the production of 2,500 to 3,000 meals a day required many ingredients. As a result, many restaurant staff, farmers and small-scale logistics providers continued having income in this time of crisis.

“The group will continue with this initiative as there are still a lot of people in difficulties due to the crisis. This time professional golfers ‘Pro Mo’ and ‘Pro May’ are also stepping in to help GULF with the distribution of meal boxes. This can be considered a success, because it will spread the story and encourage others to join us in helping those in need,” said Sitamon Ratanavadi, GULF’s assistant corporate social responsibility manager.

“We are delighted to lend help in easing the difficulties of those affected by Covid-19. We are positive that our efforts will reach those who have suffered and really need help,” the sisters said.

Since Covid-19 hit Thailand, GULF has helped by procuring medical equipment for Ramathibodi Hospital, Rajavithi Hospital, the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute, the Central Chest Institute of Thailand, the Police General Hospital and Buddhachinaraj Hospital; providing alcohol sanitising gel to small hospitals in Pattani and Yala provinces; providing 100,000 N95 medical masks to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and other hospitals in need; as well donating cloth face masks to sub-district health screening teams in 10 provinces.

GULF also promised to provide meals to poor communities across Bangkok and has partnered with Egat to provide survival kits for people in Nonthaburi province. GULF aid initiative has also been extended to Thai elephants suffering from the pandemic through donations to the Aob Chang project.

PTT oils up investment plan, aims to cut capital spending by 10-15%

May 26. 2020
By THE NATION
The SET-listed oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc is reviewing its 2020 investment plans in response to the Covid-19 outbreak, said Arawadee Photisaro, PTT’s senior executive vice president for corporate strategy.

She said this move was in line with the State Enterprise Policy Office (Sepo)’s instruction that all state enterprises revisit their short-term investment plan and present it to the office next month.

Besides, the Finance Ministry has also instructed state enterprises to cut down on their expenses to maintain liquidity, she added.

According to Arawadee, PTT has drawn up several scenarios to deal with risks from the outbreak, including one in which the global economy recovers as early as July. The worst case scenario is that the outbreak is completely contained by early next year.

She said PTT’s revised investment plan to be presented to Sepo will be under the scenario of a quick global recovery, which is possible given the easing of lockdown measures in many countries and progress in the development of a vaccine.

Quick recovery will lead to an increase in the demand for oil and petrochemical products, which will benefit PTT businesses in the second half of the year.

THAI gets 4 new directors ahead of bankruptcy restructuring

May 25. 2020
By THE NATION

Debt-ridden Thai Airways International appointed four new directors, effective immediately, at its extraordinary board meeting today (May 25), according to its filing to the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Among them is former THAI president, Piyasvasti Amranand, who replaced Sirikul Laukaikul as a board member.

Another is former PTT chief executive officer Pailin Chuchottaworn, who replaced Pratana Mongkolkul.

The other two are Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, replacing Pitipan Tepartimargorn, and Boontuck Wuncharoen, replacing Pinit Puapan.

Separately, a THAI filing this morning confirmed that the Finance Ministry reduced its shareholding in the national carrier to below 50 per cent on May 22 by selling 3.17 per cent to Vayupak Fund 1. THAI thus lost its status as a state-run enterprise.

The government is moving to restructure the airline, which has debts of Bt200 billion, under formal bankruptcy protection.

Lockdown easing, US-China tension boost industrial estate stocks

May 26. 2020
By THE NATION

Industrial estate shares are on a rising trend thanks to the lockdown easing, while the trade war between Washington and Beijing might drive more manufacturers out of China and into Thailand, Kasikornthai Securities senior director Soraphong Jaktheerangkur said today (May 26).

“All key players in this group are enjoying rising prices, including WHA Corporation and Amata Corporation, which have marketed their strengths in modern infrastructure to attract investors to move their facilities out of China,” he said. “However, it remains to be seen whether the trend will continue to the year-end or stop after the second quarter as Thailand has rivals in this region, such as Vietnam and Indonesia – countries that are also proving an alternative to China.”

Meanwhile, Capital Nomura Securities analysts estimate that WHA might not be able to reach its goal of selling 1,400 rai of land in its industrial estates due to the economic contraction and the slump experienced by automaker, which are its major clients.

“However, the company’s goal of renting 250,000 sqm of factory space should be easily fulfilled as an increasing number of e-commerce operators are looking to expand their warehouse bases thanks to the Covid-19 situation that has driven up demand for online shopping,” they said. “We estimate that WHA’s 2020 net profit will be Bt3.21 billion, or a 1 per cent contraction, from last year.”

In the past month WHA’s stock price rose 24 per cent to Bt3.28, while Amata’s stock price rose 11.5 per cent to Bt14.5. WHA’s business turnover in the first quarter contracted by 75.6 per cent to Bt99.25 million, while Amata’s turnover contracted by 19.6 per cent to Bt222.46 million.

SET rises as Phase 3 of lockdown easing beckons

May 25. 2020
By The Nation

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index closed at 1,320.98 today (May 25), up 17.01 points or 1.30 per cent.

Transactions totalled Bt53.806 billion with an index high of 1,323.43 and a low of 1,302.12.

A Krungsri Securities stock analystexpected the index to fluctuate between 1,290 and 1,315 points due to lack of positive sentiment stimulating investment and uncertainty over the US-China trade war.

“The market will gain positive sentiment from the third phase of lockdown easing after the number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand remained stable,” the analyst said.

However, the index would come under pressure from a tight market valuation and uncertainty over tense US-China relations as Beijing sets out to impose a national security law in Hong Kong.

“Investors are also concerned about the economy amid the Covid-19 crisis after China abandoned its GDP growth target this year,” the analyst said.

The 10 stocks with the highest trade values today were BAM, STA, WHA, GPSC, AMATA, BGRIM, CPALL, TRUE, SUPER and GULF.

As of 4.30pm, the crude oil price was up by US$0.22 or 0.66 per cent to $33.47 per barrel, while the gold price dropped by $5.70 or 0.33 per cent to $1,729.80 per ounce.

US indices were on the rise, while Europe and Asian indices had a mixed day:

Japan’s Nikkei Index closed at 20,741.65, up 353.49 points, or 1.73 per cent.

China’s Shanghai SE Composite Index closed at 2,817.97, up 4.20 points, or 0.15 per cent, while Shenzhen SE Component Index closed at 10,592.84, down 12.12 points, or 0.11 per cent.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index closed at 22,952.24, up 22.10 points, or 0.096 per cent.

South Korea’s KOSPI Index closed at 1,994.60, up 24.47 points, or 1.24 per cent.

Taiwan’s TAIEX Index closed at 10,871.18, up 60.03 points, or 0.56 per cent.

SET rises on hopes of 3rd phase lockdown easing

May 25. 2020
By The Nation

The Stock Exchange of Thailand Index opened at 1,310.56, up 6.59 points, or 0.51 per cent, this morning (May 25).

A Krungsri Securities stock analyst expected the index to fluctuate between 1,290 and 1,315 points due to lack of positive sentiment to stimulate investment and uncertainty amid a US-China trade war.

“The market will gain positive sentiment from the third phase of lockdown easing after the number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand remained stable,” the analyst pointed out.

However, the index would come under pressure from tight SET valuation and uncertainty following tense relations between the US and China with Beijing aiming to impose a national security law in Hong Kong.

“Investors are also concerned about the economy amid the Covid-19 crisis after China abandoned setting a target for GDP growth this year,” the analyst said.

He recommended investors buy:

● Stocks whose second quarter performance will improve, such as CKP, Tasco, STA, RS and EPG.

● Stocks which will benefit from the third phase of lockdown easing, such as Major, SPA and AU.

● Stocks which have been added to the MSCI calculation – AWC, BAM and KTC.

For the past two decades, Australia’s housing market has mostly been a one-way bet on rising prices.

Now, with the effects of coronavirus shutdowns reverberating through the economy and the nation set for its worst recession in 90 years, the concept that owning property is a license to print money is under threat.

While the covid-19 pandemic has upended property markets from Canada to Singapore, Australia is more vulnerable than most to a housing slump. It has one of the world’s highest levels of household debt, the nation’s banks are heavily exposed to mortgage lending, and many mom and pop investors rely on income from rental properties, which are also under pressure.

“Australia’s had an obsession with residential property for a long time,” said Richard Holden, professor of economics at the University of New South Wales. “A lot of people have a lot of their wealth tied up in residential property. I’m pretty worried.”

Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the nation’s largest home lender, estimates that under a short, sharp economic downturn this year followed by a quick recovery next year, house prices will fall 11% by March 2023. In the worst-case scenario of a prolonged recession, prices could plunge 32%.

That’s a marked reversal from before coronavirus hit, when house prices were back near boom-time peaks, having rebounded rapidly since a 21-month slump bottomed out in June. Longer term, home values have tripled since the turn of the century, propelling Sydney and Melbourne into the ranks of the world’s least-affordable places to buy.

To help avoid a calamitous decline, banks have rolled out a huge assistance package, with almost 430,000 borrowers given a six-month payment holiday. All up, banks have deferred AU$211 billion ($138 billion) of loans, including to businesses. Meantime, around 2.9 million workers are receiving government wage subsidies of AU$1,500 every two weeks.

That has helped avoid a flood of forced sales that could drag down the entire market. Property listings in Sydney are down 27% from a year ago, according to data provider CoreLogic.

Along with would-be buyers vying for a smaller number of properties, there’s other factors helping prop up the market. Interest rates are at a record low, and most of the hundreds of thousands of jobs lost are concentrated among younger people in low-income work like hospitality and retail, who tend not to be homeowners.

And after a brief pause during the height of social-distancing restrictions, open-house inspections and public auctions have restarted.

“The banks, and by extension the housing market, are fairly well firewalled at present, and it would take a lot to outweigh this,” said Tamar Hamlyn, co-founder of fixed-income investor Ardea Investment Management. “The most likely scenario is slowly lower prices in a low-turnover market, as in the absence of any forced selling it’s quite likely that the various buffers in place can prevent a shakeout for the time being.”

Still, even as Australia starts to emerge from the shutdowns, the after-effects will linger for years. The central bank expects unemployment will peak at 10% this quarter, be at 9% at the end of this year, and hold above 6.5% for the next two years.

And while banks are going all out to support existing borrowers, they are tightening the screws on new customers, placing less weight on variable income like bonuses and overtime when assessing borrowing capacity, and being ultra-cautious about people who work in hard-hit industries.

“Banks aren’t going to lend based on a ‘future return to normality,’ they will lend on the now,” said Redom Syed, the founder of mortgage broker Confidence Finance. “A major shock to lending markets is coming.”

Then there’s the sudden drying up of immigration, which has been one of the key drivers of house prices, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne where new arrivals tend to settle.

On a net basis, more than 470,000 immigrants moved to Australia over the past two years. Now, with borders shut and international travel unlikely to resume anytime soon, the government is forecasting immigration will slump 85% in the year starting July 1.

“Migration is going to the biggest feature of what drives housing market dynamics,” said Paul Bloxham, chief economist for Australia at HSBC, and a former central bank official. “We see weaker demand for owner-occupied property, weaker demand for rental property and weaker demand for property for students.”

Landlords are also facing an uncertain future. Unlike in the U.S. and Europe where big firms such as Blackstone Group and Vonovia own thousands of apartments, Australia’s rental market is largely a cottage industry of mom and pop landlords. For many, the monthly rent doesn’t cover their loan payments — and instead they count on tax breaks and price growth to turn a profit.

That leaves them in a precarious position if tenants can’t pay rent. While evictions have been suspended for six months, there is no financial support for renters, and instead the government has urged landlords and tenants to negotiate rent breaks themselves.

Meantime, tens of thousands of international students are stranded overseas, leaving their rental apartments empty, while the shuttering of tourism has seen AirBnB units flood back to the market.

“We are well aware of a surge in short-term accommodation now being advertised for long-term leasing,” said Louis Christopher, managing director at consultancy SQM Research.

Rents in Sydney have fallen about 6% from a year ago, and will decline further if high vacancy rates are sustained, he said. “That’s good news for tenants but a disaster for landlords.”

Then there’s the question of what happens later this year when the government and banks start to unwind the extraordinary level of support propping up the economy. With a household debt-to-income ratio of 187%, Australia is one of the most indebted countries in the developed world.

“That’s the cliff edge,” said Sarah Hunter, chief Australia economist at BIS Oxford Economics. “If the economic recovery isn’t established by then, there is the risk of a big stumble.”
