KPMG has launched “high quality” legal services in Thailand alongside its already established audit, tax and advisory assistance.

KPMG Legal provides a full range of business law services on commercial and corporate law, mergers & acquisitions and reorganisation, employment law, legal compliance and investigation, and privacy laws, the firm said.

In Thailand, there is an increasing need for businesses to implement transformation programmes that need an integrated legal approach and business methodologies, not just pure legal advice, the company said.

KPMG Legal is able to offer an end-to-end holistic approach for businesses in Thailand and the region, it added.

“At KPMG, we believe in being proactive,” said Charoen Phosamritlert, CEO of KPMG in Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. “We need to be able to identify future trends and upcoming industries in order to be ready with our team of experts to serve our clients. With KPMG Legal and our strong background in various business industries, we will be able to provide our customers with a holistic legal counsel service backed by a team of business-savvy legal advisers,” he added.

“The launch of KPMG Legal in Thailand reflects KPMG’s global strategy to grow its services network and capability,” said Stuart Fuller, global head of Legal Services and Asia Pacific leader for Legal Services, KPMG International.

“The increasing relevance of the Asia Pacific to our clients from a market, business and strategic perspective has seen KPMG’s Global Legal Services network expand in Hong Kong and Shanghai in the last 12 months, strong growth in Australia, Vietnam and Taiwan, and now the launch of KPMG Legal in Thailand. As part of our Asia Pacific and Asean strategy, we expect to see strong and continuing growth of our legal services footprint and capability in the region so that we can best support our clients,” he added.

KPMG Legal Services has more than 2,400 lawyers operating in 79 jurisdictions around the globe. This network of lawyers, including those in Thailand, allow for a deep understanding of international trends and global best practices, the firm said.

Apple doesn’t expect to meet its revenue guidance for the quarter ending in March due to work slowdowns and lower demand amid the outbreak of novel coronavirus in China.

The company said the iPhone, which generates the bulk of Apple’s revenue, is temporarily constrained due to production ramping up more slowly than anticipated. “Work is starting to resume around the country, but we are experiencing a slower return to normal conditions than we had anticipated,” the company said in a statement Monday. In addition, demand for iPhones has been reduced because stores in China have been closed or operating with reduced hours and few customers, the company said.

Apple had forecast revenue of $63 billion to $67 billion for the fiscal second quarter ending in March. Analysts on average estimated $65.23 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The company said when it announced its guidance in January that it anticipated factories reopening beginning Feb. 10. That process has been slow as factory workers and manufacturing partners look to contain the virus, which has resulted in about 1,800 reported deaths in China, from spreading further.

“This is the double-edged sword of being in China,” said longtime Apple analyst and Loup Ventures co-founder Gene Munster. “They’re the only big company with China exposure, so they are working through the pain of what has largely been a success for the company over the past decade.” The Cupertino, California-based technology giant said that, outside of China, products and services sales have been “strong to date and in line with our expectations.”

Apple didn’t say what its new revenue outlook is for March but that situation is “evolving.” The company said it will share more information during its April earnings call.

Apple had been planning to start producing a new low-cost iPhone in February, putting it up for sale as early as March, Bloomberg News has reported. It’s unclear how coronavirus has affected those plans.

The company said that despite missing its guidance, all of its manufacturing sites for iPhones in the region have reopened. In addition to iPhone constraints, the company cited its inability to sell products at its retail and partner stores in China due to the virus. China represents Apple’s third-biggest market in terms of revenue and has 42 stores, which have have been closed for much of February.

“Stores that are open have been operating at reduced hours and with very low customer traffic,” Apple said in its statement. “We are gradually reopening our retail stores and will continue to do so as steadily and safely as we can.” Apple said its contact centers and corporate offices in China have already reopened. It has opened a few stores in China, including in Beijing and Shanghai, but with limited operating hours.

By THE NATION

The Finance Ministry will propose a new economic stimulus package to the cabinet in mid-March, hoping it will immediately catapult the momentum to boost the economy in April, Minister Uttama Savanayana said today (February 17).

The package will cover tourism, consumption and investment, he added.

The tourism measure is aimed at stimulating domestic travel, which is suffering from the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The measure to boost consumption will be phase 4 of the “Eat, Shop, Spend” campaign.

Uttama said he has asked state agencies to prepare a procurement budget in advance, so that they can spend once the 2020 fiscal budget is disbursed.

The economy grew by 2.4 per cent in 2019, lower than the previous estimate of 2.6 per cent, the National Economic and Social Development Council said on Monday (February 17).

Textile Institute sewing new opportunities

Feb 18. 2020
By THE NATION

The Thailand Textile Institute has accelerated a change in structure of the industry to boost competitiveness and seek new growth opportunities.

The institute, under the Industry Ministry, promotes the development of textiles and garments and helps business operators enhance their competitiveness.

Executive director Chanchai Sirikasemlert said the industry has to focus more on high value textiles or material that can serve high growth industries, such as textiles for medical use, smart vehicles, military use, and bio-textiles.

Chanchai said the industry should produce more textiles for use in hospital operation rooms, such as sheets for beds in operation rooms or gowns for surgeons. There is high demand for these products in hospitals, he added.

He also said textile companies can easily produce the material and fabric for medical use but they may have no idea of the specific qualities or properties of the textiles hospitals need. The institute will therefore step in to seek information from medical staff.

Upgrading textile quality to meet top medical standards will also help the country serve an ageing society by producing clothes for the aged or debt-ridden patients.

The institute recently arranged business meetings between textile suppliers and hospitals, so the former can produce products that serve the specific needs of the latter.

Chanchai said textiles for next-generation cars are another big market.

The institute will also seek collaboration with textile machinery manufacturers to help textile producers upgrade their capacity to produce material and fabric from farm products such as pineapple peels, banana peels and coconut coir to lower overall operating costs.

Property market may expand 5-7%: real estate centre

Feb 17. 2020
By THE NATION

The property market will expand 5 to 7 per cent at most this year if there is overall improvement in the economy as well as purchasing power, Real Estate Information Centre board chairman Parinya Patanaphakdee estimated.

“Chinese buyers would delay the transfer of property ownership in the first half of the year due to the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak,” Parinya said. “However, it would affect the market only slightly as Chinese make up just 6 per cent of total apartment buyers.”

Meanwhile, Phoenix Property Development and Consultancy managing director Surachet Kongcheep said negative factors such as the virus and a global economic slowdown have led to a decrease of around 40 per cent of Chinese buying Thai property.

“We hope those Chinese who have bought property would transfer ownership,” he added.

Stability seen in 2020 housing market with possible expansion of up to 7 per cent

Feb 17. 2020
By The Nation

Real Estate Information Centre (REIC) sees little difference between the overall housing market conditions of this year and the last, but chance exists for an expansion of up to 7 per cent in 2020 if the Thai economy recovers from the current slowdown .

REIC , under chairman Parinya Patanaphakdee, has been developing simulation models to assess the direction and trends of the housing business, utilising its data of information collected through the years.

In regard to the market situation in 2019, the government has launched three stimulus measures: tax deduction of not more than Bt200,000 for the purchase of houses and apartments under the first house project; reduction of registration fee on property transfers and cutting the registration fee of estate mortgages to 0.01 per cent for houses and condominium units costing less than Bt1 million (including new houses and second hand homes); and a similar measure cutting the registration fee for transfers and reducing mortgage registration fee to 0.01 per cent on the purchase of houses and condominium units worth no more than Bt3 million.

These measures resulted in the nationwide transfers of ownership rising to 373,365 units worth a total of Bt875.18 billion in 2019, representing a 2.7 per cent increase in the number of units and a 4.3 per cent rise in value year on year.

The numbers of estate permission requests increased nationwide in the second and third quarters of 2901 while the figure in the last quarter of last year, similar to 2018, pointed to entrepreneurs changing business plans to develop new residential projects on the plain field.

In Bangkok and metropolitan areas,it can be seen that the adjustment has been continuing since 2016 with the number of units receiving construction permits throughout the country decreasing by 9 per cent last year as condominium construction fell 24 per cent.

The number and proportion of condominium building permits have been decreasing continuously since 2016, signalling the volume of new condominiums during the next 1-2 years would be lower.

New residential units in Bangkok and metropolitan area in 2019 decreased by 32.1 per cent; new condominiums dropped by 34.3 per cent last year while housing estates fell 29 per cent, meaning there are vacant units remaining on sales since 2018.

For 2020, REIC pointed to the positive factors of low interest rates, government stimulus measures, easing of the loan-to-value (LTV) regulations, while negative factors included the economic slowdown, Covid-19 virus outbreak, and the trade war between the United States and China.

REIC expects adjustments in the residential sector this year with the total transfers of ownership of all types of housing units around the country rising to 372,500 – 400,660 units, worth around Bt853.1 – Bt917.1 billion, representing an expansion of between -0.2 per cent to 7.3 per cent from the previous year. Ownership transfers in Bangkok and its vicinity of 197,500 – 214,300 units, will account for 53 per cent of all units and 67 per cent of value of all transfers across the country.

Transfers of condominium units nationwide will be approximately 117,400 – 126,780 units, worth approximately Bt284.36 – Bt305.7 billion, with Bangkok and its vicinity accounting for 73.6 per cent of the volume and 78.1 per cent of the total value. A slow down in ownership transfers to Chinese buyers is expected in the first half of this year in light of the coronavirus outbreak but it will not have a significant impact as they account for only 6 per cent of all buyers.

Residential units from the launches of new projects in Bangkok and its suburbs in 2020 will be around 114,400- 122,600 units, comprising 55 per cent condominium units, or approximately 62,900 to 67,400 . Applications for subdivision permits throughout the country is estimated at 97,500 to 100,400 units with Bangkok and its surrounding provinces accounting for 58.4 per cent

The number of applications for building licences nationwide is estimated at 292,100 to 300,900 units, with approximately 27.4 per cent for condominiums, or approximately 80,000 to 82,400 units.

Applications for building permits in Bangkok and its suburbs is put at around 129,000 to 132,900 units with approximately 51.1 per cent for condominiums or approximately 65,900 to 67,900 units, meaning that 82 per cent of condominium projects receiving building permits throughout the country will be located in Bangkok and its vicinity.

From the forecast above, it may conclude that the real estate market in 2020 is likely to be relatively stable but still has the potential to grow by up to 5-7 per cent if the country’s overall economy improves. This will create employment and confidence in property buyers.

TFEX extends trading session for gold futures

Feb 17. 2020
By THE NATION

Thailand Futures Exchange PCL (TFEX) will expand the trading hours of gold futures in night session to 3 am, allowing investors enough time to adjust their strategy to global market trend.

Rinjai Chakornpipat, TFEX managing director said: “from February 24 onwards, the company will change the night trading session from 7pm to 11.55pm to 8.50pm to 3am of the next day. We believe the new schedule will allow investors to adjust their trading strategy and risk management in time before the start of trading in overseas markets ”.

“This new schedule will cover all products whose prices are tied to gold, including gold futures, gold online futures and gold-D,” she added.

In 2019, gold futures were responsible for 7 per cent of total TFEX’s trading volume, increasing from 4 per cent the previous year. In January 2020, gold futures created over 38,000 trading contracts per day on average, a 192 per cent increase year on year. “Trading of gold futures has become increasingly popular, given the current global economic situations, especially gold online futures,” she added.
