Which holiday emoji would you use?

lifestyle July 14, 2017 09:49

Travel website Booking.com has discovered in a study that holidaymakers often want to share their vacation experiences with others via messaging on mobile devices.

In response to this, and to celebrate the World Emoji Day on Monday (July 17), Booking.com has asked 18,000 travellers which new emojis they’d like to see. The top choices include images of people looking at a map, dressed in typical tourist gear, and taking a selfie.

Booking.com has brought these characters to life through illustrations and created a light-hearted petition for Unicode to include them as part of its current list.

If you want more emojis to use for your next holiday, sign the petition at Booking.com.

The study commissioned by Booking.com and independently conducted in April and May by Research Now covered 18,496 respondents.

More than a thousand each were surveyed in the UK, US, Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, India and Russia, and 500-plus each in Australia, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong, Croatia, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Thailand and Taiwan.

Sea Life Bangkok has plenty to celebrate with the birth of a Gentoo penguin, the first ever to be born here, and is now inviting members of the public to take part in a naming contest for the newborn to win a total of Bt30,000 in prizes along with free admission to the aquarium at Siam Paragon.

The birth of “baby Gentoo” is particularly welcome, as it signals the success of the Sustainable Aquarium Administration mission’s “Breed, Rescue, Protect” project.

When it hatched on June 3, the 95-gram baby couldn’t see. It started opening its eye at three days old and has been thriving ever since.

Its parents were born and raised at Legoland, Billund, Denmark and moved to Bangkok in December 2014. The newborn penguin was covered in light grey fur to protect it from the chilly temperatures in the aquarium but still relies on the warmth from its parents, who will continue to take turns brooding their chick every 12 ro 24 hours until it reaches the age of two months.

Fed with regurgitated food six times a day, the chick has put on weight fast and weighed almost half kilogram at 30 days old. The chick has now started walking and will swim at around two months old after moulting.

“More than two years have passed since the 10 Gentoo penguins travelled across the world to their new home in Bangkok, and now we have welcomed our eleventh member. The aquarium-born penguin is considered a success. Our team of experts are taking great and close care of the chick ,” said Wiboon Rakseree, director of Aquatic Animal Care Department, Sea Life Bangkok.

The winner of the contest will take home Bt15,000 cash along with four annual passes, while the first runner-up gets Bt10,000 and four entry passes

The third prize is Bt5,000 cash and four entry passes

Submission details can be found at Facebook: Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World. The deadline is July 31 and winners will be announced on August 1 2017 via Facebook.

In the meantime, visitors can meet “Baby Gentoo” at the Gentoo Penguin Tank. Adults pay Bt990 and hildren between 3-11 years old get in for Bt790.

Online magazine, “Grazia Daily” recently awarded Thai designer Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana top of its list of the most stylish princesses in the world.

The article, titled “A Definitive Ranking of the Most Stylish Princesses in the World” stated: “If there were a prize for most enthusiastic fashionista on this list, Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana of Thailand would undoubtedly get the title. As it is, she’s been crowned Most Stylish Princess In The World instead. A regular on the front row at couture, a designer in her own right (she showed in Paris a few seasons ago) and with a wardrobe that boasts pieces by Chanel, Balmain and Hermes, shrinking violet and modest style maven she is not. Unafraid to experiment with more out there, non-princessy looks – including exaggerated shoulders, leather and tuxedos – she’s definitely changing the face of modern royal fashion.”

Princess Sirivannavari has her own luxury fashion brand Sirivannavari Bangkok and has a boutique at Siam Paragon.

Burberry is celebrating its iconic trench coat with an in-store experience at its Siam Paragon store. Running from Monday (July 10) to July 23 July, the exhibition presents the history of the brand since its establishment in 1856 and the evolution of the Burberry trench coat, showcasing the expert craftsmanship behind it. On display is Burberry gabardine, the enduring weatherproof fabric from which the Burberry trench coat is made and which was invented by Thomas Burberry, along with trench coat imagery from the Burberry Archive, replica Burberry Archive garments and archival trench coats from past runway collections showcasing the evolution of the trench coat over the years.

The second zone showcases the detailed construction of the iconic design. Customers will have the opportunity to monogram their own trench coat with two letters in hand-applied goldwork cording.

“The Portrait Studio”, a purpose-built photography set, first introduced at Maker’s House as part of the Burberry February 2017 show, will also be in-store. The Portrait Studio will allow visitors to become part of the new February collection experience, with the opportunity to share their images through social media.

Also available in-store is Burberry’s latest February collection, first unveiled in full on the runway as part of London Fashion Wee earlier this year. All menswear and womenswear looks are available to purchase in-store and online globally.

French eyewear brand Izipizi has joins with lifestyle concept store Another Story in launching a limited edition collection of shades for hip and stylish Asian customers titled simply “Izipizi x Another Story Limited Edition”.

Based on the “Earth Traveller” concept, this collection takes you to explore the world and designers and celebrities, among them MR Mannarumas Yukol, Nandhini Amranand, Jarospan Svasti Na Ayudhya, Sarunpak Phenjati, Jarudech Boonyasit,  Pitchana Ekachai, Kanitkul Netbute and Wongsathorn Varachartkul, joined The Mall Group’s Maryse Kraatz and Trinupab Jiratraitarn of Cobalt International, the importer of Izipizi for the start of that journey,.

Specially designed for travellers, the collection is sold exclusively at Another Story and there are only 1,000 pairs available, all featuring an exclusive design. Earth green is used to represent going on an adventure, while the prints on the legs symbolise fun and style. Durable polycarbonate is used to offer more flexibility, making the specs an ideal companion that can be worn anywhere. The shape has been designed to suit Asian people’s face structure.

Guests were invited to take pictures with their choice of eyewear from this limited edition collection and post them on Instagram to win one-night hotel packages from Let’s Sea Al Fresco. Another activity was the DIY Patchwork workshop, in which the guests could design their own eyewear cases. The event wrapped with the announcement of the Best Dressed winners, given to those whose outfit best matched the Earth Traveller theme. The fun continued with the after party, with music from DJ LIVE.

MR Mannarumas said: “Eyewear not only protects the eyes but also adds a touch of style to any outfit. I don’t wear a lot of accessories and I dress quite simply, so sometimes I feel like something is missing. Sometimes I just wear a pair of sunglasses or perch them on my head.”

Nandhini Amranand said that she enjoys the great outdoors and often heads to the sea. Sunglasses are a must-have item for her. “Even when I’m working in my office, I spend a lot of time looking at the screen, and it helps to have blue light cutting lenses to protect my eyes. This collection has everything I need, and the style is suitable for everyone”. Model Wongsathorn Varachartkul agreed, adding that for her, eyewear is an accessory that can make any outfit look more outstanding and stylish.

Convenience takes a big leap forward

Install Line Mobile on your phone and you’ll never queue up for service again

With Line Mobile – now in beta testing – you can use your phone to pay bills, adjust your data speed and modify subscriptions without having to physically go to a shop.

The digital service, which I got to try out and found to be very fast and convenient, uses the Line Mobile app and is available for both Android and iOS devices.

The service arose from a survey of mobilephone users. Most expressed frustration about having to queue up in shops to pay monthly bills and get other kinds of service.

They also complained that monthly plans for phone use and the contracts that bound them to a service for months were too complicated.

So Line Mobile is designed to let users take care of business using only the app under a monthly plan that’s transparent, flexible and has no time-stamped contractual obligations.

People invited to participate in the beta testing didn’t even have to go out and buy the required SIM card. We got an email link to the server to buy the card and received it by courier.

Subscribers can also choose their own phone number by keying in the digits they like and don’t like. If the number’s available, it’s yours.

The price plan comes down to “what you see is what you get”, the Line Mobile team says. There are no hidden costs. (Full disclosure: We beta users scored a 75-per-cent discount through December.)

Like shopping for clothes, you pick the price plan by “size”. XS costs Bt69, S Bt99, M Bt119, L Bt169, XL Bt219, and XXL Bt269. The cheapest plan covers 1.5GB of full-speed Internet data use and 100 minutes of call time, while XXL is 40GB and 600 minutes.

Even when you’ve used up all your call time, you can continue making calls for just Bt0.99 per minute. And after you’ve chewed through your online quota, you still have free, unlimited normal-speed data at 256Kbps. Or you can top up full-speed access for Bt24 per gigabyte during the beta period and Bt120 thereafter.

I found the free speed (256Kbps) fast enough to check mail, browse the Web and watching YouTube videos at a resolution suitable for a mobile phone.

Best of all, the app lets you conveniently switch between full-speed data connection and the free 256Kbps speed, conserving your allotment when traffic is heavier for later use, such as uploading high-resolution photos and videos.

Users of Line Messenger are able to freely use Line Calls and Video Chat without worrying about their data quota, and the folks at Line tell me there may be more such perks coming for users of Line Mobile.

The app has two main sections – Dashboard and Control – and a Profile button at the top left. Tap Profile and you see your name and phone number as registered and buttons to access Billing, Packages, Topping and International Services.

Billing is for checking expenditures and paying the bill (via credit card, Rabbit Card or Line Pay, with more options in the works).

In Packages, you can switch to a different pricing plan. Topping, obviously, is for buying more time on the Net.

International Services is great for travellers, who can use it to activate a roaming service wherever they are and check roaming rates among available partners and fees for making international calls.

In the beta stage, calls abroad from Thailand are quite cheap. You could call a fixed line in Japan for Bt5 per minute or a mobile phone there for Bt6. Calling either one in South Korea is about Bt4 per minute.

International Services is disabled by default. You have to let Line Mobile know you want to use it, either through the call centre or Chat.

The Dashboard is as straightforward as can be. It shows your outstanding balance, which renders full details at a tap, and the number of minutes in your pricing plan and how many are left. Tap that to see a call history.

The Dashboard also has your full-speed data and what remains in your quota, again with full history available for scrutiny.

At the bottom of the Dashboard are your current package detail and the price. Tap this to change the package anytime, though the change takes effect the following month. Before that happens, you can change your mind and cancel or choose another package. The team is looking at ways to make the change take effect more quickly.

The Control tab has two toggles. Pick “Data” to switch between full-speed and free. Pick “Out-of-Plan Charges” to avoid any billing shocks and automatically stop uses that will incur charges beyond your monthly limit.

Line Mobile has good sound quality for voice calls and the data connection is fast, letting me download other apps and back up photos to cloud storage quickly.

The Ookla Speedtest app measured the download speed at 97.67Mbps and uploads at 43.32Mbps on a Samsung Galaxy S8+.

The Line Mobile team is collecting input from beta testers and plans to adjust pricing plans accordingly when the service is publicly released. Although it is currently linked to the Dtac network, other providers are welcome to become partners.

While the service remains in beta trials, details about the service provider are being withheld – but the name and availability of Line perks offers a big enough hint of who’s behind it.

KEY FACTS

– Website: th.LineMobile.com

– Current pricing plans: XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL

– Full-speed data: 4G

– Free data speed: 256 Kbps

– Service management and control: Line Mobile app (iOS, Android)

Where Trat keeps the other good stuff

  • The province has long been home to a diverse array of ethnic groups.

  • Trat has produced many famous personalities, but ordinary folk also have interesting stories to share.

Where Trat keeps the other good stuff

The handsome Trat Museum has a lot of interesting stories to tell

Trat province in Thailand’s far east is so packed with attractions – led by sunbaked Koh Chang, the country’s second-largest island – that its slogan ends up being quite a mouthful. Trat wants tourists to know that it’s “The Land of Fifty Islands, Precious Rubies, Sweet Zalaccas, Good Ridgeback Dogs, Marine Battle of Koh Chang and the End of the East”.

Missing in that jumble of superlatives is Trat Museum, which can supposedly be surveyed in an hour or less and yet manages to cover a surprisingly rich local history.

Rungrote “Neng” Swangkarn, a museum assistant, is ready to take visitors on a guided tour through those remarkable stories, touching on warfare, the fine arts, native lore and ethnic culture. He explains all of it quite well.

The first bit of history Rungrote relates is that of the colonial-style building housing the museum. It was erected in 1922 to serve as Trat municipality’s town hall – all handsome wood, sitting on concrete pillars, with a roof missing the customary gable. It was registered in 1996 as an “ancient” monument and national treasure – and almost destroyed in a 2004 fire.

The municipality got to work the following year restoring it. The Culture Ministry’s Department of Fine Arts allocated Bt16 million for reconstruction and landscaping, which was completed in 2006. And the next year, the department designated the structure as a provincial museum.

The Office of National Museums handled the exhibits from 2010 to 2012 on a Bt19-million budget and then management was transferred to the municipality so it could become a learning centre focused on local natural and cultural heritage.

“Residents and tourists come here to learn about the province and they can get a pretty good understanding in just 45 minutes to an hour,” Rungrote says.

The museum has six areas – Natural and Cultural Resources, Ethnic Groups, Archaeological Artefacts from Prehistory to the Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin Eras, Important Moments and Events during the Reign of King Rama V, The Marine Battle of Koh Chang between Thailand and France, and Displays of Trade Market in the Past and Present.

That hefty provincial slogan is posted on a wall near the entrance. Reading it uses up much of the promised 45 minutes’ browsing time. There’s that naval battle again, and rubies of course, but what about the good (meaning high-quality) ridgeback dogs?

Rungrote is there to defend all the claims. There are indeed 52 islands and lots of outstanding local products, he says. The rubies from Bo Rai district are stunning, and the sweet zalacca (salacca) fruit of the palm tree, harvested every May and June, is delectable.

Trat boasts a breeding centre for the classic Thai ridgeback dog, identifiable by its wedge-shaped head, triangular pricked-up ears, short, smooth coat and a tail either straight as a sword or curled like a sickle. The breed was once largely unknown outside Thailand.

One locally bred animal can fetch Bt10,000 or more, says Rungrote.

Looking forward to naval combat, we begin the tour by watching a video about the province whose chief intention seems to be making it clear that the “Siamese ruby” originates in Trat, not Chanthaburi, which is merely a large market for the rubies.

That settled, we move on to see a picture of Chao Chom Mother Jan, the Trat native who was King Rama IV’s first concubine and nurse to the baby who would become Rama V.

Rungrote informs us that 131 families descend from the monarchs from Rama I to V, and that Trat has firm ties to two of them – the Kasemsri and Suksawat clans. “It’s a matter of great pride here,” he says.

Another vintage photo depicts the province’s first petrol station, and still others show the grandmother of yet another famous child of Trat – entertainer Suthipong “Chompoo Fruity” Wattanajang.

Trat’s ethnic minorities are in the spotlight next. Among them are the Tai, who arrived here during the Ayutthaya Period, various Chinese groups immigrating in the Thonburi Period, and the Chong of Mon-Khmer derivation.

The Cham are Muslim Khmer who originally fled Cambodia during the reign of Rama III and form the majority population in Ban Nam Chieo, where there’s a 200-year-old mosque, the Masjid AlQubra.

From much further back in history, there’s a bronze-sheathed kettle-drum that’s somewhere between 1,900 and 2,700 years old.

Rungrote says 47 of these percussion instruments have been unearthed in Thailand and three of them in Trat, on land belonging to local farmer Samoe Imthasan.

“The drums all have different faces, depicting the sun if they were used in worshipping nature, a frog or an elephant for rain rituals, a boat for funerals, or a human wearing a crown for certain celebrations.

“We also have stone axes that were made 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. There was an old belief that if a fighting cock drank water from the blade of a stone axe, it was sure to win.”

Such lore in interesting stuff for visitors. Rungrote says Trat has a population of just 240,000, but last year attracted more than two million tourists. They surely have no problem finding interesting attractions around the province, but the locals have apparently struggled to stay amused.

“Trat hasn’t had much in the way of popular entertainment places since the cinema scene collapsed when everyone started watching videos at home,” he says. “After that, we’d often spend a lot of money just to go to Chanthaburi and see a film at the cinema.

“But we do have one of our own again now, called the Kantana Café,” he chuckles. “It’s got 72 seats.”

– Dual pricing, still just Bt30

– The Trat Museum is on Suntisuk Road in Bang Phra in Mueang district.

– It’s open daily except Monday from 9am to 4pm.

– Admission is Bt30 for foreigners and Bt10 for Thais.

ATHLS400iS earphones from Audio Technica make the most of sonic technology to keep users rocking

Audio Technica’s ATHLS400iS inear headphones deliver terrific sound quality on the strength of an innovative quad Balance Armature (BA) Driver.

This is the top of the line of five sets of earphones in the Live Sound series.

The BA Driver is actually four drivers in one – two low-frequency drivers with a mid-frequency and a high-frequency driver – all within a single earpiece.

Designed to deliver each frequency to the ear with maximum clarity, their combined output is exceptionally detailed, dynamic and well balanced.

The driver housings of titanium and clear Tritan copolymer resin (for a nice, distinctive, seethrough touch) reduce unwanted resonance.

Acoustic sound pipes are enclosed within eartip posts that “guide” the music from drivers to ears with improved high-frequency response.

The eartip posts, angled for a comfortable, sound-isolating fit, come in four sizes – XS, S, M and L – so you can select to best fit.

The LS400iS boasts high sensitivity of 105dB, frequency response of 15 to 20,000Hz and 20 ohms’ impedance.

You get a detachable 1.2-metre cable with A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) connectors at the headphones for exceptional durability and audio performance.

The cable is equipped with an inline microphone and controller for handling phone calls as well as music and video playback on compatible devices. The flexible memory cable loops around the ears for a custom fit.

I tested the earphones with a Sony Xperia XZs phone and got great music reproduction with clarity, powerful bass and fine details. These things are fantastic for listening to rock music.

They’re also very comfortable to wear. The eartips completely sealed out external noise so I could enjoy my music without disturbances or distractions.

The inear remote can be used to answer a call or hang up as well as for controlling the music playback. While playing music, you press once to pause and again to resume. Press twice to skip to the next track and three times to return to the previous track.

RTB Technology sells the ATHLS400iS for Bt19,900.

Mulberry in the bag

lifestyle July 07, 2017 16:00

By The Nation

Introduced by Mulberry’s creative director Johnny Coca at the autumn-winter 2017 show during London Fashion Week, the Amberley family of bags was born out of a modern exploration of the luxury brand’s heritage and classic British style, where reinvention comes from tradition.

The new bag collection is named after Amberley Castle, an English country seat in west Sussex dating back to the 12th century. The shape draws influence from leather goods associated with countryside pursuits – a nod to the original Mulberry Trout and Poacher bags of the 1970s – to create a new family of quintessentially British accessories.

This new range features equestrian-tinged stitching, quilting details, raw-edged construction, and fine saddler leathers. It is adorned with the new signature hardware, the Rider’s Lock, reminiscent of the metal on horse bits and bridles. The Amberley family is both beautiful and utilitarian, a fundamentally British mix.

The collection is available in five different silhouettes – the Amberley, Small Amberley Satchel, Mini Amberley Satchel. Echoing the colours of the autumn-winter collection, the range is offered in a vibrant palette of colours including Rust, Castle Blue and Dark Amethyst, as well as the core shades of Oak, Oxblood, Clay and Black. In addition to Mulberry’s natural leathers, graphic snakeskin and croc print leathers complement the clean lines of the Amberley.
