LONDON-based BAE Systems has signed a new contract with Bangkok Dock to assist in the licensed construction of a second 90-metre Offshore Patrol Vessel for the Royal Thai Navy.

Under the agreement, BAE Systems will provide engineering support and advice during construction of the vessel in Thailand.

“We’re looking forward to building and strengthening our relationship with Thailand’s shipbuilding industry. This contract to support delivery of a second Offshore Patrol Vessel to the Royal Thai Navy is a clear endorsement of our versatile Offshore Patrol Vessel design,” Nigel Stewart, commercial director at BAE Systems’ Naval Ships business, said in a statement.

Three of these ships are already in service in Brazil and three more are under construction for the UK Royal Navy.

The company said the Royal Thai Navy accepted its first 90-metre Offshore Patrol Vessel, HTMS Krabi, from Bangkok Dock in 2013. It is a variant of the baseline BAE Systems design. HTMS Krabi has already completed around 1,000 days at sea.

The Appeals Court yesterday acquitted four former Border Patrol Police sergeants-major – Niran Taemchuay, Rangsiman Sukkaew, Panang or Jakrin Duangkamol and Apisak Polsawat

The court said it doubted the prosecutor’s evidence linked the officers to the crimes.

The four former subordinates and their boss, former Pol Captain Nat Chonnitiwanich, were found guilty of abuse of authority and assault by the lower court in 2014. Nat was given a seven-year jail term while the four officers received five years’ jail each. The four men then appealed, leading to their acquittal yesterday due to the court’s doubts.

The lawsuit said that on January 6 and 7, 2007, Nat and his team detained the couple for alleged possession of 20 ‘yaba’ pills in Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Thung Song district, tortured them to obtain confessions and demanded Bt200,000 for their release. The couple, who were turned over to police to face legal action, were later acquitted.

Police say four teenagers have confessed to killing a friend and gang-raping his girlfriend in Phatthalung’s Sri Nakarin district last week.

Now they have issued an arrest warrant for a woman who allegedly helped the suspects dig the victim’s |shallow grave, Sri Nakarin superintendent Pol Colonel Wichai Wichayanareupol said yesterday.

Wichai said on Monday night, police picked up two suspects who surrendered to police in Chumphon, to take them – together with two previously-arrested suspects – to re-enact the crime for a case report confession later. One suspect, who surrendered in Chumphon, reportedly told police they killed the friend after a previous argument and then gang-raped and assaulted his three-month pregnant girlfriend before pushing her off the side of an embankment

THE Police Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) yesterday announced the arrest of three alleged members of a Myanmar-based drug trafficking ring along with a total of 500,000 ‘yaba’ pills and 31.8 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine or ‘ice’.

The drugs had an estimated street value of Bt200 million.

The three suspects were Jamras Denpreecha, 54, Lertsak Phuripanyanant, 37, and another Shan man identified only as ‘Chai’. The former two men were arrested separately in Lat Phrao and Bang Kapi in Bangkok, while Chai was nabbed in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district on Monday.

Pol Maj-Gen Pornchai Charoenwong, chief of NSB Division 3, said the arrest came after an investigation found that Chai acted as a narcotics distributor in the North, smuggling illicit drugs in spare car tyres for storage in Bangkok. Undercover police conducted a sting operation to buy 27 kg of ice, which resulted in the drugs being delivered on Monday to a parking lot by Lertsak and a search of accomplice Jamras’ home, where a further 500,000 ‘yaba’ pills and 4.8kg of ice was found.

National police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda said the gang was part of a network under the late Golden Triangle drug lord Khun Sa.

NSB chief Pol Lt-General Rewat Klinkesorn said police also issued arrest warrants for two accomplices – a Shan couple who ran a gold shop and money exchange service in Chiang Rai

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will probe Pathum Thani’s Wat Phra Dhammakaya and its abbot Phra Dhammachayo for possession of a stolen item and money laundering in relation to the Klongchan Credit Union Co-operative embezzlement case, according to the DSI deputy chief.

Pol Lt-Colonel Somboon Sarasit told a press conference yesterday that the meeting of DSI and attorneys resolved to proceed with an investigation of money laundering against the key suspect and former chairman of the co-operative Supachai Srisupa-aksorn, along with the recipients of 878 cashier’s cheques without any apparent debts with the co-operative. Among them were Wat Phra Dhammakaya, which had received some Bt2 billion in donations and the money was transferred to bank accounts of the abbot and other monks at the temple.

Somboon further said that DSI also recently seized three more assets of Supachai. They were: the Bt168 million he wired to another person who then bought a plot of land to build a Bt20 million-worth resort; a 1,984-rai plot of land worth Bt367 million in Nakhon Ratchasima province; and a three-rai plot of land worth Bt23 million.

No cremation for “child angels”

CHILD ANGEL DOLL

A Nakhon Pathom-based temple abbot yesterday revealed that he had turned down requests by several owners of “child angels” for doll cremations, following reports of people starting to dump their “Look Thep” dolls at this Bangkok outskirts monastery, as they presumably felt embarrassed about carrying the “spirit” dolls around.

Wat Phai Lom abbot Phra Kru Palad Sitthiwat told reporters that a fruit vendor had asked the temple’s undertaker to cremate her “child angel” doll and offered a Bt10,000 cash donation to cover the expenses. She told temple staff that since she obtained the doll many family members criticised her and even called her crazy, and as she could no longer put up with the pressure, wanted the doll to be cremated. The abbot said that he turned down the request and put the doll among many other ones with similar fates at the temple. The Bt10,000 money donation was also contributed to the temple’s Vihara construction campaign instead.

The monk said that he understood the doll owner’s feelings but the cremation was for a human funeral and they must follow the rules. The dolls were not a human body that needs a cremation rite by tradition and law, he explained adding that he also wanted to respect the people’s beliefs and faiths regarding the “child angels.” He said people could leave their “child angels” or “Kuman Thong” baby amulets at the temple at any time and could take them back whenever they wanted.

THAI AUTHORITIES have rescued nearly 30 Myanmar victims from alleged human traffickers’ hands in Phuket province.

The rescue operation relied on information provided by a Myanmar man who successfully ran away from the suspected traffickers, who were also from Myanmar.

“We have finally discovered a small place where 29 victims were locked inside on the province’s Siray Island,” Anti-Human Trafficking Division’s commander Pol Maj General Kornchai Klayklueng said at a press conference yesterday.

He said in addition to helping these victims out, police also managed to arrest three suspects.

He identified the suspects as Jiw San Nyunt, Sow Mo, and Soe Win Aung Zo.

Police said the victims initially came to Thailand voluntarily as they were promised a paying job. However, after they arrived, they were locked inside such a shelter all the time except when they were ordered to work on a fishing trawler.

“Each ‘work trip’ on the fishing trawlers lasted about seven days. Some of them were also physically attacked while on the boat,” Kornchai said.

He added that the victims lamented that they had not received any wages yet because the three suspects said they had to repay money owed to Soe Win Aung Zo first.

“This suspect said he had paid for their travel expenses since the time they left Myanmar,” Kornchai said.

Safety fears at Pha Taem

UBON RATCHATHANI

Following recent rockslide, visitors may be barred from national park

CONCERN IS mounting over the safety of tourists at Pha Taem National Park in Ubon Ratchathani following the rockslide in December at a nearby spot, which could possibly lead to a visitor ban in the area.

The park features famous prehistoric cliff paintings that have been noted on the Fine Arts Department’s list of historical sites since 1968.

Tawsaporn Nuchanong, acting director-general of the Mineral Resources Department, said yesterday that for the sake of tourists and to prevent possible damage to the area, outsiders may be barred from visiting the site.

The site needs thorough inspection by geologists and geo-hazard experts, he said.

The survey of the damage caused by the rockslide requires about two weeks.

The rockslide at Pha Krathang took place on December 24.

A team of geologists was sent to survey the site on January 26 and found different kinds of cracks at Pha Taem that may cause a similar rockslide.

“Therefore, we may recommend that tourists be prevented from going to the site for their own safety and because of possible further damage,” he said.

Monitoring and preventive measures were needed at the area, he said.

Rocks at the accident scene and at Pha Taem have the same characteristic of being not so solid.

They could be weakened by rainwater and weather and collapse, so there is a possibility that Pha Taem may encounter the same problems.

Erosion of shale layer

Tawsaporn was speaking after travelling to Pha Taem National Park in Khong Chiam district to inspect the damage from the rockslide.

The rockslide that was possibly triggered by rocks with different weights created a cave of about 10 by 25 metres.

Nakarin Sutato, chief park warden, said his officials back in October detected erosion of the shale layer at the area where the prehistoric paintings were.

They also found old and new fissures there so they alerted officials from the Mineral Resources Department to inspect the site out of fear that an accident could have a serious impact on tourism.

On December 24, he was alerted by a village headman about the rockslide at Pha Krathang.

A warning sign about falling rocks has been posted at the site.

Ubon Ratchathani Governor Somsak Jangtrakul dismissed earlier reports that the prehistoric paintings were damaged by rockslides, saying they were still intact and were not impacted by the incident.

He urged concerned authorities to meet and find ways to prevent such incidents in future.

The paintings are the main tourist attraction at the park, which covers about 340 square kilometres over three districts.

With more than 300 prehistoric paintings, originally spread along a 180-metre stretch of the cliff, it is the largest rock art collection in Thailand.

Mural subjects dating back 3,000-4,000 years, include elephants, ox, dog, turtle and giant Mekongcatfish. The paintings depicted the daily life and also some special rites in prehistoric times.

The monochrome paintings used red colour red from red sandstone, which are plentiful in the land of sandstone mountains in the northeastern part of Thailand.

The displays include drawings, paintings, stencilling, paint splattering, imprinting and scraping with hard objects. Pha Taem is considered one of the world’s oldest agrarian communities, which makes Ubon Ratchathani the cradle of Northeastern civilisation.

Malaysian media group impressed

THE STAR

THE STAR Malaysia was impressed by Nation Multimedia Group’s convergent newsroom after a visit to the media firm’s headquarters yesterday.

“We are very impressed with NMG’s move to set the trend of media,” said Wong Chun Wai, managing director and CEO of The Star’s Group, said yesterday.

He added that with the convergent newsroom is an example of how NMG had started from the ground level yet had stayed abreast with the latest in media and he hoped the Star could duplicate that.

The Star is similar to NMG except it has no TV, however, it has Internet TV, TheStarTV.com, which has been operating for six months.

“As 80 per cent of our income comes from newspapers, which is a declining business, we see Internet TV as the way forward.

“We hope our editorial departments will be converged. We do not have a convergent newsroom like NMG but we are practising it. Every morning we have a news meeting involving everybody from every segment,” he said.

A convergent newsroom is necessary in the digital media era. Journalists need to have multiple skills. It is also important in terms of reducing headcount. If everybody does their own thing, costs will go down.

“And it is also important that journalists can do news for all platforms. They will be the smarter ones.”

June Wong, chief operating officer for content development, said the strategy is very simple. The company just wants to go beyond the print business and it believes that the future is digital, which is a combination of website and video content.

“The Star TV dotcom is purely a video platform. It is very challenging and we expect to go beyond that,” she said.

The video platform is a must since audiences are younger people who want to watch rather than read.

“According to research, it is better not to copy too much TV content when going online. It is a challenge. We have good content in print but how do we tell the story online and in video form and not copy TV,” she said.

They need to learn from NMG, which has a lot of TV experience.

Desiree Gasper, a journalist for The Star, said she was deeply impressed when seeing a lot more about TV broadcasting. It is very interesting to see how NMG converged.

“We just started now doing TV on the Internet. We have so many things to learn since our background is in print media. We’re very impressed to see how NMG’s teams work together and how everything is organised. It seems very professional.”

Four teenagers arrested over murder of ‘friend’ and gang-rape of his girlfriend

PHATTHALUNG police have four teenagers aged 17 and 18 in custody who were wanted for the murder of a friend and the gang rape and assault of the victim’s pregnant girlfriend.

Police are checking to see if anyone else was involved in the crimes, which occurred in Sri Nakarin district in the southern province.

Two of the teens surrendered to police in Chumphon province yesterday and reportedly confessed to the crimes, which they reportedly recorded.

The other teens were arrested earlier. The also reportedly confessed and on Sunday told police where to find the body of the “friend” they murdered. It was in a shallow grave. Police alleged the suspects lured the two victims to a secluded forest area near Trang province to sort out an argument.

Police alleged that was where the murder, rape and assault took place, with the three-month pregnant girlfriend pushed off the side of an embankment after being raped. The woman survived the attack and got help from a nearby village.

The deceased man and his girlfriend were reported missing by their families last Thursday.

The woman was recovering in a hospital yesterday, while relatives called for police protection because of fears other accomplices may try to kill her to keep her quiet. They claimed five men came to the hospital looking for her.
