Malaysia awakes to a new dawn

MAHATHIR, 92, LEADS OPPOSITION COALITION TO STUNNING VICTORY CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS LED TO NAJIB’S DEFEAT IN ELECTION

A “PEOPLES’ TSUNAMI” has swept 92-year-old former premier Mahathir Mohamad back to power, fuelling hope that the world’s oldest leader will bring positive change to Malaysia and the region.

Mahathir’s Pakatan Harapan – the Alliance of Hope – won 113 of the 222 seats contested, while his protege-turned-enemy Najib Razak’s Barisan Nasional (BN) trailed with 79 seats in Malaysia’s 14th general election, which was held on Wednesday. The shock victory brings to an end six decades of rule by the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) coalition that began after independence from Britain in 1957.

“Yes, yes, I am still alive,” Mahathir told a news conference in the early hours yesterday after learning of his victory. The former strongman had built a campaign around claims of corruption against Najib.

“I am not seeking revenge, we don’t want to punish people but the rule of law will be clearly implemented,” said Mahathir. “If Najib has done something wrong, then he will have to pay the price.”

Speaking to a packed room at Sheraton Hotel in Petaling Jaya, Mahathir, added that those who broke the law, including journalists, “will be brought before the court to be tried”, reported Malaysiakini.

In his first public comments after the results, Najib – looking shattered after the shock loss – told a press conference: “I accept the verdict of the people and BN is committed to the principles of democracy.”

Observers in Malaysia told The Nation it was Najib’s involvement in the scandal around the 1MDB state-development fund that had led to his defeat, since Malaysian people were angry with an administration perceived as corrupt.

Najib is accused of presiding over the looting of sovereign wealth fund 1MDB and has responded with strident denials – and increasing repression. The 64-year-old British-educated Najib is the son of Abdul Razak Hussein, Malaysia’s second premier and founder of UMNO’s long-time coalition, BN. While in power, Najib quashed 1MDB investigations, but Mahathir has said Pakatan Harapan would restore “rule of law”.

1MDB probes “will probably be reopened and it is important that this be done in a fair and judicious way so that Malaysia can come to terms and move beyond the scandal,” Southeast Asia politics analyst Bridget Welsh told Bloomberg.

A delicate touch likewise is needed to clean up “systemic problems of corruption and rot and kleptocracy”, she added.

The poll win capped a dramatic comeback for Mahathir, who ruled the country with an iron fist for 22 years. Mohamad Azlan Shah, a member of Mahathir’s party in the crowd, said he was “very proud”.

“Our struggle to change Malaysian politics is not wasted. We believe Mahathir can make a change,” he told AFP.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Mahathir’s comeback has been his reconciliation with jailed opposition icon Anwar Ibrahim, his former nemesis, a relationship that has loomed large over the Malaysian political landscape for decades. Anwar was Mahathir’s heir apparent until the premier sacked him in 1998 over political differences, and he was subsequently jailed on charges of sodomy and abuse of power that were widely seen as trumped-up.

Anwar was jailed again during Najib’s rule but he is due for release in June – and Mahathir has promised to secure him a royal pardon, allowing him to run for office again and potentially become prime minister.

Mahathir, whose 1981-2003 tenure as UMNO leader and premier is often credited with creating a modern Malaysia, but also tarnished by the jailing of opponents and entrenchment of the political dominance of Muslim Malays, the country’s majority group, over the sizeable Chinese and Indian minorities.

Just a few years ago, then-retired Mahathir had chastised his former protege Najib for loosening the reins with political liberalisation moves, which Mahathir warned would lead to chaos. Those reforms were later nullified as Najib tightened the screws over 1MDB.

Ever the opportunist, Mahathir now rails against the system he helped create and has promised reforms such as leadership term limits and scrapping an unpopular sales tax imposed by Najib. Malaysiakini called the vote a reminder that politicians are elected to serve the people “and not lord over them”.

“It would be wise for the incoming government to remember this.”

UMNO’s Malay bloc has waged a caustic battle against a diverse opposition alliance that reflects the tropical country’s multicultural make-up, yet is prone to internal divisions of its own.

Any incoming administration faces the daunting task of wresting control of a government bureaucracy steeped in UMNO’s ways, plus the thorny issue of enshrined policies that favour Malays in politics, employment, and other areas.

Mahathir, a key architect of that system while premier, is now a bedfellow with a coalition infused with impatient Chinese and Indian constituencies.

Trump confirms summit with Kim Jong Un to be held in Singapore on June 12

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday (May 10) he will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June12, confirming speculation that had been swirling among international media for days.

“The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th,” Mr Trump tweeted on Thursday (May 10).

“We will both try to make it a very special.

The two leaders are expected to discuss North Korea’s nuclear weapons development and testing programme, which has deepened long-seated tensions between Washington and Pyongyang.

Singapore, touted for its neutrality, high degree of public order and track record in hosting high-level meetings, was among a list of venues floated for the summit, which would be the first between leaders of the US and the North.

In recent weeks, the shortlist was whittled down to Singapore, and the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) that divides the Korean peninsula.  But on Wednesday, Mr Trump told reporters that the summit would not be held in the DMZ.

Trump’s announcement came just hours after three Americans who had been held prisoner in North Korea arrived at a US military base outside Washington, having been brought back by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo after their release by Mr Kim.Trump said on their arrival that he believed Mr Kim wanted to bring North Korea “into the real world” and had high hopes for their planned meeting, which would be the first between a serving US president and a North Korean leader.

“I think we have a very good chance of doing something very meaningful,” Mr Trump said. “My proudest achievement will be – this is part of it – when we denuclearise that entire peninsula.”Related Story

Singapore security, efficiency why it’s a favourite for Trump-Kim meet

Visiting US 7th Fleet commander Vice-Admiral Phillip Sawyer had told Singapore media in an interview on Thursday that “the region and the world is cautiously optimistic and hopeful of what will come out of this (the meeting)”.Describing the developments as “historic”, he made the comments when asked how recent developments involving North Korea could impact the 7th Fleet’s operations.

“I think that our government leaders between our two countries are going to be meeting very shortly and I look forward to what comes out of that,” he added.

Why Trump and Kim may pick Singapore for their summit

Experts The Straits Times spoke to weighed in on the likelihood and merits of three possible locations in the Republic.SHANGRI-LA HOTEL

A hospitality and events consultant who did not wish to be named, said that Shangri-La Hotel, which hosts the annual high-level Shangri-La security dialogue is the top contender. “Logistically and security-wise, Shangri-La knows the drill….especially since they also host the Shangri-La dialogue.”

Mr Toby Koh, group managing director of Ademco Security Group, said the hotel would have security preparations in place for the Shangri-la Dialogue taking place in early June, before the Trump-Kim summit reportedly taking place in mid-June.

“That’s probably the ideal location, so they don’t have to replan and redeploy the security assets,” he added.

Its location, away from the main Orchard Road belt, and within a residential area, also makes the Shangri-La hotel an ideal venue for the summit, experts said.

MARINA BAY SANDS

MBS has been flagged as a venue for the summit, given that one of President Trump’s major donors, Mr Sheldon Adelson, is chairman and chief executive officer of Las Vegas Sands Corp which owns the Singapore integrated resort.

Mr Koh, however, does not think it is a suitable venue for the meeting. “It is out of the question,” he said, adding that MBS is too close to the city, so getting to and from the venue will be a hassle for officials and others attending the meeting.

The facility’s sprawling area also makes it very challenging for security personnel, he added.

Mr Koh said: “There are too many ways to access the location and I do not think that authorities will want to close off the area.”

SENTOSA

The island, with its relaxing surroundings, could be an attractive option, said experts. From the security perspective, there are also suitable sites on the island which are secluded and private, said Mr Koh.

But hotels on Sentosa may not be able to host large entourages, said the hospitality consultant.

Fugitive Thai ex-premier Thaksin Shinawtra on Thursday was among the first to congratulate Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his historic victory in Thursday’s general election in Malaysia.

The victory of Mahathir, 92, is considered a political earthquake that toppled the country’s scandal-plagued premier and ousted a regime that had ruled for over six decades.

While the Thai government has apparently not expressed its felicitations to Mahathir, former PM Thaksin, who is wanted on criminal charges in Thailand, was quick to express his best wishes in a series of @ThaksinLive tweets.

“My sincere congratulations to Dr Mahathir Mohamed on his spectacular comeback. The  people have spoken loud and clear that they not only remember his outstanding legacy but need his leadership,” he wrote.

He misspelled Dr Mahathir’s family name, spelling it Mohamed instead of Mohamad. The mistake appeared in his statements on his Facebook wall “Thaksin Shinawatra”.

“From my experience of working closely with him, I am confident that he will lead the Alliance of Hope and Malaysia into a successful future,” he wrote.

“His leadership will undoubtedly reinvigorate Asean as well as the ideas and visions he helped shape. I am certain that all the Thai people share my sentiment and respect towards him.”

Thaksin also posted a photo of him shaking hands with Mahathir during an Apec Summit in Bangkok in 2003. His statements in twitter and Facebook were in both Thai and English.

Probe against Suthep in police stations case 90 per cent complete: NACC

politics May 11, 2018 01:00

By THE NATION

THE ANTI-GRAFT agency’s investigation into alleged irregularities linked to former deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban in the construction of police stations all over the country is 90 per cent complete, a senior official said yesterday.

National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) secretary-general Warawit Sukboon said that the corruption case involved a project to build 396 new police stations throughout the country.

The project was approved while Suthep, then secretary-general of the Democrat Party, was serving as deputy prime minister in the Democrat-led government.

The NACC also has completed about 80 to 90 per cent of its investigation into a separate corruption case against former Samut Prakan mayor Chonsawat Asavahame and others, involving Bt800 million in state subsidies to temples in the province, Warawit said yesterday.

In yet another case involving politicians, the NACC is investigating accusations against Karuna Chidchob, president of the Buri Ram Administrative Organisation. Karuna was accused of irregularities over Bt20 million in state subsidies to sports associations in the northeastern province, according to Warawit.

Karuna is the wife of Newin Chidchob, president of the Buriram United Football Club who has retained much influence in the Bhum Jai Thai Party. Newin on Monday led an event at the football team’s 32,000-seat home stadium in welcoming Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Warawit said that in April, after receiving an NACC investigative subcommittee’s report regarding the case against Karuna, the agency’s board instructed that further evidence be gathered. “Just a little more time is needed to complete the task,” he added.

The senior official also defended the NACC action against Watana Muangsook a prominent figure of the Pheu Thai Party’, in connection with the Ua Athon housing project.

“We do not practise bias or preferential treatment,” he said.

On Wednesday, public prosecutors sued Watana through the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders, for alleged malfeasance and bribery in connection with a residential project for low-income earners. The project was built by the National Housing Authority (NHA) at the time when Watana served as minister of social development and human security overseeing the NHA.

Junta to mark coup with video on achievements

politics May 10, 2018 19:30

By The Nation

The government is producing a video and a publication to present its achievements over the past four years after the military coup in May 2014, Deputy Prime Minister Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong said on Thursday.

The public relations material is to be released for the coup’s fourth anniversary on May 22, according to Prajin.

But he said no exact schedule has been set for a press conference that would accompany the release of the video and book.

The video officially details work completed by the 20 ministries over the past four years, according to the deputy PM. It also explains the country’s situation before the coup in May 2014 and mentions what this government has done in tackling the country’s problems, he said.

“There has been peace. The foundations have been established, the roadmap has been set and there is a new constitution,” Prajin added.

The air force chief said the video covers such matters as security, foreign affairs, society, education, public health, tourism, environment, laws, politics and administration. “It ends with the path to a new election,” he added.

The deputy premier said the video’s storyboard has been completed and is going to be presented to Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha for approval.

The book also covers the work by the five reform steering committees on public administration headed by the five deputy prime ministers, according to Prajin.

In 2014 he joined the coup-making National Council for Peace and Order while serving as commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Air Force.

Junta fears protest violence, says NSC chief

politics May 10, 2018 18:55

The National Security Council (NSC) has warned of possible violence by an infiltrating “third party” at a planned street protest to push for an early election on the fourth anniversary of the military coup on May 22.

General Wanlop Rugsanaoh, the NSC’s secretary-general, said on Thursday that his agency was also attempting to determine whether there was anyone behind the planned rally, following an observation by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha about that possibility.

A group calling themselves People Who Want to Vote threatened to march to Government House on May 22 to lodge their demands with the prime minister for a general election to be held in November, the post-coup administration to reduce its role to a caretaker government and the military to stop supporting the ruling junta, the National Council for Peace and Order.

“The government is preparing for an election to be held. We do not want to see a demonstration because the public will be inconvenienced,” Wanlop said.

“It’s possible the march may be infiltrated by people with ill intentions who want things to get out of control. The government is trying to prevent those people from using this rally as their political tool. And we are doing our best to prevent law violations and disruptions of the peace,” he added.

The NSC chief said that he expected the authorities to step up security measures ahead of the rally.

Thaksin praises Mahathir over win, as Pheu Thai awaits election

Thailand’s former PM Thaksin Shinawatra on Thursday congratulated Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad, who freshly won a historic victory in the election over scandal-ridden Najib Razak.

“The power of the people has spoken loud and clear that they do not only remember his outstanding legacy but needed his leadership,” Thaksin wrote on his Facebook status. He also posted a photo of himself shaking hand with Mahathir at Apec’s 2003 meeting in Thailand 2003.

“His leadership [will] undoubtedly reinvigorate Asean as well as ideas and visions that he helped shape,” he said.

Mahathir, already has a legacy for his 22-year career as the elected premier, and for leading Malaysia through the 1997 Asian financial crisis. He returns to the top post aged 92, after defeating Najib, whose popularity had been in decline following a major corruption scandal.

Thaksin was also hit by similar scandals during his premiership in 2006, but was ousted by a military coup rather than by an election. He has been in self-exile since then.

His sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, also an ex-PM, also lost power in a coup. The 2014 coup brought General Prayut Chan-o-cha to the premier’s seat amid international criticism of undemocratic practices.

Thaksin earlier predicted that the Pheu Thai Party, the third incarnation of the Thai Ruk Thai Party that he founded, will win a landslide victory in the yet-to-come election despite the junta’s influence.
