The 92-year-old leader has stepped into a special place in Malaysian history, making a comeback to the job he left 15 years ago.

The Election Commission (EC) has yet to confirm the results at press time but Pakatan is claiming a simple parliamentary majority of 112 seats.

Speaking at a packed press conference at the Sheraton Hotel, Dr Mahathir also claimed that Kedah, Perak, Negri Sembilan and Melaka, apart from Penang and Selangor, had fallen to Pakatan, bringing an end to the 61-year rule of Barisan Nasional.

“It was a total Malay earthquake that has changed the political landscape of the country,” said Merdeka Centre CEO Ibrahim Suffian.

For months, surveys and polls had shown an unusually high percentage of Malays who were undecided about who to support in the general election.

Many were puzzled and could not figure out what it meant.

The Chinese voters, on the other hand, had been clear from the start that they were still against Barisan, especially Umno, and everyone could see that it was going to be another Chinese tsunami.

On May 9, the Malays decided to go for change and their combined force brought down the ruling coalition led by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Asked what Malaysia could expect from the shocking outcome, Ibrahim said: “It is a new day. People have to be prepared for new things such as the first woman deputy prime minister. They have to face the changes and be participators in the change.”

Ibrahim said two factors led to the result of GE14, the first being economic issues, especially the GST that exacerbates the cost of living pressures of many Malaysians.

Barisan thought that opposition to the 6% Goods and Services Tax implemented in 2015 had settled down but it came boiling to the surface again during the campaign period and especially after Pakatan promised to abolish the tax if it won.

That captured the imagination and support of many ordinary people.

The second factor, said Ibrahim, was the 1MDB issue that clung on to Najib despite numerous explanations.

It was a complicated issue that most people could not grasp but over the last one year, Dr Mahathir simplified it in a few choice words – kleptocracy, robber, thief – and it all seemed to come together for him and his newfound friends in the Opposition.

At press time, the EC had yet to confirm the election results as claimed by Pakatan and EC chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah appealed for the public to be patient for his officers to put together the results of the 222 parliamentary and 505 state seats contested.

Pakatan ceramahs had drawn big crowds but the ground was relatively quiet compared to the heightened air of the 2013 general election.

In fact, the ground was so misleadingly quiet that Barisan was claiming that it could secure as many as 140 seats while Pakatan was the one that had seemed unsure of victory.

As such, it is quite likely that Pakatan was more shocked at winning than Barisan was at losing.

Malaysia is in uncharted territory should the EC confirm Pakatan’s claims on the elections result.

The concern among many Malaysians now is that there should be a peaceful transition of power once the EC is able to confirm the results of GE14.

The concern among many Malaysians now is that there should be a peaceful transition of power once the EC is able to confirm the results of GE14.

Its chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the coalition had been contacted by the Palace, which said it would recognise the results pending an official announcement from the Election Commission (EC).

He said that Thursday and Friday (May 10 and 11) would be declared public holidays, to be announced by the Chief-Secretary to the Government.

“We can’t declare public holidays because we are not the government yet,” he said at a press conference at 2.45am on Thursday (May 10).

“The palace has contacted us, because they heard that we have achieved a majority.

“After the Prime Minister is sworn in and appointed Prime Minister officially, he may appoint the Deputy Prime Minister and other ministers.

In a stunning political upset that took pundits by surprise, Mahathir’s opposition alliance ended the long hold on power of the Barisan Nasional coalition, which has been in power in Malaysia since its birth as an independent country in 1957.

The thumping victory capped a dramatic political comeback for Mahathir, who previously ruled the country with an iron fist for 22 years and came out of retirement to take on Prime Minister Najib Razak after the leader became embroiled in a massive corruption scandal.

When he takes power, Mahathir will be the oldest prime minister in the world.

Despite the shock result there were no reports of trouble on the streets, where pockets of celebration erupted overnight.

A flag-waving crowd of supporters gathered on a field outside the headquarters of Mahathir’s party near Kuala Lumpur.

Suva Selvan, a 48-year-old doctor, said he felt the country had just won its independence.

“I feel that with this change we probably can see something better in the future… our hope for the future is a better government, fair, free and united,” he told AFP.

Defeat could just be the beginning of Najib’s troubles. Mahathir has vowed to bring him to justice over allegations that billions of dollars were looted from sovereign wealth fund 1MDB, which the scandal-hit leader set up and oversaw.

But at a press conference after his win, Mahathir vowed: “We are not seeking revenge. We want to restore the rule of law.”

He said he would be sworn in Thursday.

Mahathir’s return to the political frontlines saw him throw in his lot with an opposition alliance filled with parties that he crushed while in power, and which includes jailed opposition icon Anwar Ibrahim — his former nemesis.

Anwar is due to be released from prison in June. Mahathir has vowed to get him a royal pardon, and later hand over the premiership to him.

As well as seizing control of the national government, several state legislatures across the country fell into opposition hands for the first time, including the highly symbolic bastion of Johor, the birthplace of Najib’s party that was the lynchpin of the ruling coalition.

Dramatic defeat

Official results from the Election Commission showed that Mahathir’s opposition grouping Pakatan Harapan, along with a small ally, had secured 121 parliamentary seats. 112 are needed to form a government.

BN got 79 seats — a dramatic drop from the 133 they held previously.

Najib was nowhere to be seen as the evening wore on, and was believed to have holed up inside his house for talks with senior members of BN.

The opposition win was particularly striking as critics said that Najib tried everything he could to cling to power.

His government was accused of pushing a redrawing of electoral boundaries through parliament that created constituencies packed with the country’s Muslim Malay majority, who have traditionally supported BN.

He called the election on a weekday — polls are typically held at the weekend in Malaysia — in what observers said was an effort to keep turnout down, which would hurt the opposition. In the event, voters flocked to the polls in huge numbers.

Ultimately the explosive allegations of corruption, coupled with anger at rising living costs, proved too much for Malaysia’s 15 million voters, already sick of racially divisive politics in the multi-ethnic country and graft scandals under years of BN rule.

In Mahathir, the opposition found the perfect person to take on Najib. He is a staunch Malay nationalist who could appeal to the country’s biggest ethnic group, and whose years in power were remembered as a prosperous period in the country’s history.

The initial euphoria at the opposition victory will likely give way to some apprehension.

Mahathir was also a accused of being an authoritarian leader, and political opponents were thrown in jail during his time in office.

In the agreement, TVS will supply the three-wheeled vehicles to CamGO using local firm Three Wheel Motor Service Provider as an intermediary.

Ouk Chipsourn, CEO of Camgo, said at the press conference on Tuesday that his company has offered their service in Cambodia since 2016 and up to now their app has been downloaded by 5,000 users in Phnom Penh.

While there are 42 TVS King autorickshaws available for service in Phnom Penh at current time, Chipsourn said 42 others will be arriving early next month, expanding the fleet to 84.

“With the agreement today, we expect that there will be 300 TVS tuk-tuks available for operation before the end of this year,” he said, adding that the service will expand beyond Phnom Penh to other tourism destination like Siem Reap, Kampot, Preah Sihanouk provinces.

While no dollar figures were given on the deal, CamGo owns all of its tuk-tuks and offers its drivers the option to either work for a fixed salary or rent their vehicles for $4.5 a day.

Growing trend

Mobile taxi-hailing apps have been expanding quickly in Cambodia this year.

Last December, Malaysian technology company Grab entered Cambodia’s ride-hailing market and later acquired US-headquartered giant Uber. Additionally, there are also several locally operated companies.

Va Chandore, director of Three Wheel Motor Service Provider, said yesterday that demand for ride-hailing services are increasing at a breakneck pace in Cambodia. Thus, the added supply of vehicles will help to reduce traffic congestion and bring jobs into the country.

The country has pledged more than Aus$1.3 billion (US$970 million) — its largest ever aid commitment to the Pacific — to fund projects including an undersea communications cable to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

The government said the reorientation of its aid priorities, revealed in a budget on Tuesday, reflected “the fundamental importance to Australia of the stability and economic progress of Pacific island countries”.

Canberra and other regional capitals have become increasingly alarmed at China’s push into the Pacific which could potentially upset the strategic balance in the region.

Australia’s Lowy Institute estimates China provided US$1.78 billion in aid, including concessional loans, to Pacific nations between 2006-16.

And reports last month — which were denied — said Beijing wanted to establish a permanent military base in Vanuatu.

The extra Aus$200 million in aid, which will also go towards a new High Commission in Tuvalu, means the Pacific now represents some 30 percent of Canberra’s total aid budget, which stood still at Aus$4.2 billion.

Aid agencies were quick to criticise the freeze in overall aid funding, at just 0.23 percent of national income despite a significant boost to government revenues from a pick-up in commodity prices and employment growth.

“This budget was an opportunity to show leadership and use some of the unexpected revenue to repair past damage to aid,” said Marc Purcell, chief executive of the Australian Council for International Development.

In contrast, neighbour New Zealand this week announced a significant rise to foreign aid, delivering Aus$668 million in extra funding over the next four years, largely directed at the Pacific.

Army Private Aung Kyaw Naing and villager Aung Than Htay were arrested at a checkpoint in Rakhine’s Rathedaung township on May 7 with nearly 200,000 meth tablets, according to a Facebook post from the government’s Information Committee.

Police then searched the home of the villager’s mother and found eight massive bags of stimulants on the top floor, amounting to a total of 1.7 pills worth $3.6 million, the statement said.

The three have been detained at a police station where they will face legal action.

“We were able to make the seizure in the village based on follow-up information from the first arrest,” an anti-drug officer told AFP, confirming the case but requesting anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

The pills were branded with the letters “WY” — the stamp of the ethnic Wa drug gangs that churn meth and heroin out of Myanmar’s lawless northeast.

The drugs are smuggled from that “Golden Triangle” zone south to Thailand and beyond, but a westward route to Bangladesh — the gateway to other South Asian markets — has also flourished.

The trade has continued to flow through Rakhine despite the heavy security presence in place since the military unleashed its ruthless crackdown on the Rohingya community last August.

More than 700,000 of the Muslim minority have fled the violence for neighbouring Bangladesh.

The UN says the campaign amounts to ethnic cleansing, but Myanmar says it was targeting Rohingya militants.
