Are video game pro controllers worth it? Heres a guide to find out.

As competitive gaming has grown in mainstream appeal, so too has the prevalence of high caliber controllers from third-party vendors.

From Scuf to Astro to Battle Beaver, the controllers usually offer an array of upgrades (additional buttons, the ability to assign different functions to different buttons, faster input registration, more durable hardware) over the default controllers shipped for PlayStation and Xbox, and usable with PCs.

However, it’s not as though the new analog sticks will turn you into an esports all-star overnight, and with prices exceeding $100, it’s worth figuring out exactly what you’re looking for before you invest.

ADVERTISEMENTx

Here are several key questions to help decide if you’d benefit from upgrading to a pro controller.

– What do you want to do better?

In determining if you need a pro setup, or what models to consider, start by figuring out exactly what problem you want the controller to solve. For me, a regular “Warzone” player, I struggled with precise movement and often would accidentally melee by pushing the R3 button when I’d tense up in a gunfight. If you ever saw someone in Verdansk who looked like they were trying to have a slap fight against someone spraying them with a sub machine gun, that was probably me.

The game has a setting to fix that, but it moves another useful button (melee) to the circle or B button on PlayStation or Xbox, respectively. On a controller with mappable back buttons, I don’t need to move my thumb off the stick and can use my middle finger on the back button to melee instead. If this sort of thing sounds like it would benefit you, you may want to check out the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller, the brand new Scuf Instinct Pro for Xbox/PC or even just the back-button attachment for PS4 controllers, which could be a budget friendly option for seeing how you like the additional inputs.

For many games, being able to play while always keeping your thumbs, index and middle fingers on the same inputs is a great benefit. (For example, EA Sports titles really reward stick movement.) If you like to bounce around between games and genres, one nice feature on the Instinct Pro is the ability to save three separate button profiles directly on the controller and toggle between them with a button on the back, which is a huge time saver.

However, some genres of games may benefit from a more specialized controller. Fighting games, for instance, may feel better with an arcade-style joystick and buttons combination, like the Razer Panthera or Atrox. And of course racing and flight simulators feel far better when playing with a wheel/pedal combo or a flight stick and throttle, respectively.

– How often do you play?

This is another basic starting point, but it’s worth noting. If you’re only putting in 2-5 hours a week, it doesn’t make sense to spend on a new controller. Not only are you just not going to spend much time with it relative to your investment, but it also takes a good amount of time to get used to the new controller, to learn its features and discover how best to configure it. If you’re not gaming for more than a few hours at a time, you’re not going to get much return on your investment. If you’re playing multiple hours a day/night, though, then it’s an upgrade you may want to consider.

– Are you competitive or casual?

Similar to the above, if you’re not actively trying to improve your skills at a particular game, a pro controller may just be a waste. For instance, if you play on a PlayStation 5 and enjoy the immersion of the haptics you may prefer the sensations of the trigger resistance and recoil when playing a game like “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.” But if you’re more of the competitive type, you may favor turning that resistance off to allow you to squeeze off shots faster. Pro controllers are aimed specifically at people who are willing to do the latter, favoring their performance in the game above all other factors.

– Are you willing to learn?

To make it worthwhile, you need to have a bit of drive to improve at your favorite game(s). You’re going to need to sink in some time and be patient; using a pro controller may require relearning how to play the game.

Take for example the new Scuf Instinct Pro we’re currently reviewing. The controller features trigger stops (which decrease the distance you need to pull the triggers to register a command) and allows four more inputs on the underside of the controller using two paddles (push toward the handle for one input, toward the middle of the controller for another). For a battle royale game like “Call of Duty: Warzone,” those elements can allow you to aim and fire faster and perform other actions normally reserved for the X, Y, A and B buttons without moving your right thumb off the stick. That lets you aim easier or continue to look around while you reload, jump, melee/slide or change weapons.

But to use those paddles, you’ll have to unlearn reaching for the buttons with your right thumb – a reflex I’ve developed over some 15 years of console gaming.

In playing with the Instinct Pro, I’ve often forgotten about the new options sitting (literally) at my fingertips, concentrating on the game and letting my hands and fingers do what they’ve always done. Developing new habits is a process. If you don’t want to put in the time and effort, don’t waste your money buying yourself options you’ll never take advantage of.

– How hard are you on your controllers?

There are two important parts to this question. First, you’re going to spend a lot of money on a pro controller. So if you’re the kind of person who throws the controller down on the coffee table every time they die in “Fortnite,” you probably shouldn’t sink money into something you’re likely to break. Also you should probably work to lower your stress level. It’s just a game.

However, if you’re the sort of player that tends to wear down your controllers through prolonged use (for example, smoothing out the handles or exhausting the thumb sticks so the L3/R3 buttons don’t register properly) then you might benefit from a controller that helps by offering enhanced grip, and is designed to absorb more wear and tear – through normal use, of course.

– How do you use your current controller?

The best feature for most pro controllers is the additional configurations made possible by back or additional buttons. By remapping your controller, you can put the inputs you use most in the easiest places to activate them. For most, the easiest to reach places are going to be the triggers, the thumbsticks and the back buttons. With that set up, you never need to move your thumbs off the sticks and index fingers off the triggers. If, with your current controller, you’re manipulating your grip to reach buttons, for instance using a “claw” grip, save yourself the agony and splurge for a remappable controller. It’ll probably be cheaper than the physical therapy to fix your mangled hand, too.

Pro gaming controllers won’t automatically make you better at your favorite games. What they should do is provide ways for you to improve that standard controllers don’t offer. If that’s something that appeals to you, and if you’re willing to put in the time to learn the ins and outs of the new equipment, then it might be worth taking the plunge.

Health agency defends purchase of another 12m Sinovac doses

A Thai public health agency on Tuesday issued data to back the decision to purchase another 12 million doses of Sinovac, despite public criticism of Thailand’s reliance on the Chinese vaccine.

The Department of Disease Control and Emergency Health Hazards reported on Tuesday that Sinovac remained Thailand’s top choice with 11,399,453 doses administered so far, ahead of AstraZeneca (10,255,294 doses), Sinofarm (2,036,818) and Pfizer (409,066).

A total of 508,498 doses were administered on Monday (August 16), bringing the number of people jabbed at least once to just over 24 million (24,100631), department director Dr Chawetsan Namwat said.

Of these, 18,370,997 have had their first jab, 5,228,157 have been double-jabbed, and 501,477 have had three doses.

Dr Chawetsan added that a study of front-line health workers showed two shots of Sinovac offered 72 per cent protection against Covid-19 infection and 98 per cent protection against death. The study was conducted from May to July on 3,906 medical personnel working with Covid patients.

Meanwhile, data showed that cross-vaccination with Sinovac followed by AstraZeneca vaccine generated high and rapid stimulation of immunity since jabs could be given 3-4 weeks apart instead of waiting 3 months, he said.

All vaccines used in Thailand had passed World Health Organisation (WHO) standards on prevention of fatalities and reduction of severe illness, Chawetsan said.

“Currently, there are plans to purchase an additional 12 million doses [of Sinovac], which will be crossed with AstraZeneca to generate wide immunity stimulation among the population.”

The government is facing growing public criticism of its reliance on Sinovac vaccine, which costs more than twice as much as locally made AstraZeneca but barely reaches the 50 per cent efficacy threshold set by the WHO.

ChulaCov19 generates similar level of immunity as Pfizer, say researchers

Thailand’s home-grown ChulaCov19 vaccine generates immunity on par with the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine and protects against four major variants of Covid-19, its lead developer said on Monday.

Dr Kiat Ruxrungtham, founder of Chula Vaccine Research Centre, revealed preliminary results of phase 1 human trials of ChulaCov19 – Southeast Asia’s first mRNA vaccine – during a press conference via Chulalongkorn Hospital’s Facebook page.

A group of 36 volunteers aged 18-55 were given two shots of the vaccine and experienced no serious side effects after seven days. Some developed mild or moderate side effects which improved within 1-3 days.

ChulaCov19 stimulated similar levels of antibody-based immunity as other mRNA vaccines such as Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna, while generating much higher protection against the original strain of Covid-19, said Dr Kiat. This high antibody response is also capable of inhibiting transmission of all four strains: Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta. ChulaCov19 also stimulates T-cell immunity, which helps to eliminate and control the virus in the cells of infected people.

Phase 2 trials on volunteers will begin around August 25.

Dr Kiat expects ChulaCov19 to be available by April 2022. Researchers will transfer the technology to Bionet Asia for immediate mass production.

ChulaCov19 vaccine can be stored at refrigerated temperatures of 2-8°C for 3 months and room temperature (25°C) for 2 weeks.

GPO’s inactivated vaccine enters 2nd human trial after strong results

The Covid-19 vaccine jointly developed by the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) and Mahidol University has begun phase 2 human trials after generating a strong immune response in phase 1, GPO chief Dr Witoon Danwiboon said on Monday.

The HXP-GPOVac inactivated vaccine was tested on 210 volunteers in phase 1 and produced only mild side effects such as temporary headaches and muscle ache.

It generated strong immunity against the original Wuhan strain of Covid-19 and lower immunity

against the Alpha, Delta, Gamma and Beta variants of the virus, Dr Witoon reported.

The HXP-GPOVac vaccine project is a collaboration with the US-based PATH global health organisation. The project has modified the Newcastle avian virus by adding a spike protein to generate an immune response against coronavirus. The resulting vaccine is grown in chicken eggs.

Dr Witoon said the second human trial will run until November when researchers will apply to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct a third trial. He expects production of the first 20-30 million doses to begin at the GPO plant in Saraburi by the middle of next year after the vaccine is registered with the FDA.

Bayern beat Dortmund to clinch 9th Supercup

Robert Lewandowski netted twice to help Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 3-1 and win their ninth German Supercup title.

Robert Lewandowski’s brace ensured Bayern Munich’s first trophy of the season after moving 3-1 past Borussia Dortmund in the Supercup 2021 at the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday.

As in tradition, the Supercup hosts the titleholders of the German Cup and the Bundesliga. Cup winners Dortmund and Bundesliga champions staged a fast-paced opening period without testing the goalkeepers.

Thomas Muller created the first clear-cut chance of the clash after 13 minutes but missed the target despite Serge Gnabry’s good build-up work.

Seven minutes later Dortmund should have opened the scoring, but Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was equal to Marco Reus’ effort from very close range.

Bayern responded with two promising opportunities in quick succession, but for all that, neither Muller nor Lewandowski was able to overcome Gregor Kobel at the half-hour mark.

Dortmund continued to attack, but Youssoufa Moukoko’s goal was ruled offside before Neuer had to be on guard to deny Haaland.

The opener was scored at the other end of the pitch though as Gnabry’s cross into the area found Lewandowski, who made no mistake to head home from a central position in the 41st minute.

After the restart, the German champions started where they left off and doubled their advantage as Alphonso Davis raced down the left wing before squaring into the path of Muller, who poked home into the empty goal with three minutes played in the second half.

Despite the 2-0, Dortmund continued unimpressed and kept Bayern’s defense busy as Haaland had another goal ruled offside in the 53rd minute.

Dortmund’s efforts paid off at the hour mark when Jude Bellingham’s square pass allowed Reus to unleash a hammer into the top right corner, halving the deficit from the edge of the box.

Marco Rose’s men gained momentum and were about to take over, but Manuel Akanji’s poor pass, deep in Dortmund territory, got intercepted by Corentin Tolisso. The Frenchman teed up for Lewandowski, whose second goal of the night broke Dortmund’s resilience in the 74th minute.

“We are of course disappointed as we wanted to win. I think both sides staged an entertaining encounter over 90 minutes for the spectators. I saw a lot of good things but also a lot we need to improve,” Dortmund head coach Rose said.

“We have defended very well in the first half and should have scored earlier. It is great to start the season with a title,” Bayern head coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

England striker Abraham joins Roma on five-year deal

Italian Serie A side Roma announced the arrival of Tammy Abraham from Chelsea on Tuesday, after the hitman signed a five-year deal.

Having come through the youth ranks of Chelsea, Abraham contributed 30 goals in 82 competitive appearances at Stamford bridge.

“Abraham, 23, joins the club from Premier League side Chelsea–with whom he won the Champions League earlier this year–for a fee of 40 million euros,” Roma announced in a statement.

“The overall transfer agreement also includes a number of performance-related clauses, based on the achievements of both the player and the club. Chelsea will also retain the right to a percentage of any future transfer fee involving the striker,” it added.

After introducing Abraham, Rome has completed a merry-go-round with Chelsea and Inter Milan, as the Blues splashed out a club-record fee of 97.5 million pounds to sign back Romelu Lukaku from Inter, while the Nerazzurri brought Edin Dzeko from the Giallorossi as a replacement.

Abraham will wear the No. 9 shirt in the upcoming new Serie A season.

Japan will ban spectators from Paralympic venues in and around Tokyo, except some school children #SootinClaimon.Com

Japan will ban spectators from Paralympic venues in and around Tokyo, except some school children

TOKYO – Japan will ban spectators from Paralympic venues in and around Tokyo due to the spread of coronavirus, organizers announced Monday, as it once more opens the country to athletes from around the world to compete in largely empty stadiums.

The Paralympic Games will begin on Aug. 24, just a few weeks after the conclusion of the Olympic Games, which also were held without spectators at the vast majority of venues. A state of emergency declaration is in effect in Tokyo and surrounding prefectures for the rest of August, and likely until the end of the Paralympics in early September.

“I very much regret this situation has impacted the Paralympic Games following the Olympic Games,” Seiko Hashimoto, president of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee, said at a news conference Monday evening. “We hope that you understand that these measures are unavoidable and being implemented in order to prevent the spread of infection. Everyone is encouraged to watch the Games at home.”

ADVERTISEMENTx

The only approved spectators will be children from schools that request to attend, and are located nearby the Games venues – a decision that organizers hope would teach students about living in a more inclusive society, but raises safety questions given the low vaccination rates among children and amid signs that children may be more susceptible to the delta variant.

Organizers said the school program may be canceled if infections drastically worsen. In the meantime, they said they wanted Japanese students to witness the achievements of Paralympians who overcame challenges posed by their disabilities and the pandemic.

“In the case of Paralympians, they have my greatest respect, so much so that children should directly experience how the Paralympians are performing, how they are trying. I think it’s the greatest education we can give,” said Hashimoto, a seven-time Olympian who represented Japan as a cyclist and speed skater.

The spectator ban was largely expected, after the Olympic Games were held without fans in the vast majority of venues. The Olympics coincided with a rise in covid cases that reached record levels in Tokyo and throughout Japan, even though Olympics-related positive cases largely held steady.

Organizers asked fans to refrain from gathering in large crowds on the street to watch cycling events in the roads or to take photos with the Olympic cauldron.

Tokyo 2020 chief executive Toshiro Muto added that organizers have heightened concerns about the covid risks for athletes with disabilities.

Makoto Shimoaraiso, a Japanese government official guiding the country’s pandemic response, warned in a briefing on Monday about the rise in severely ill covid cases in Japan. He said the government hopes to see a dramatic reduction in the flow of foot traffic in congested areas of Tokyo, and asked residents to get tested before traveling for their summer holidays this month.

Man City start title defense with defeat while title rivals all kick off with wins

Son Heung-min scored the lone goal as Tottenham Hotspur handed 1-0 defeat to defending champions Manchester City in their Premier League season opener.

Manchester City’s title defense got off to a false start as they lost 1-0 to Tottenham in their opening game of the season on Sunday afternoon.

Son Heung-min’s 55th-minute goal gave Tottenham all three points in a game given extra spice by Manchester City’s well-publicized pursuit of Spurs’ captain, Harry Kane.

ADVERTISEMENTx

Kane was not included in his side’s squad with coach Nuno Espiritu Santo saying that the striker, who only returned to training a week ago, was not match fit.

Jack Grealish made his debut for Manchester City, but the game showed just why Pep Guardiola is looking to sign Kane as his side played some pretty football, but lacked bite in their rivals’ area.

West Ham began where they left off last season with a 4-2 win away to Newcastle United after twice coming back from behind in Sunday’s other game.

Callum Wilson put Newcastle ahead in the fifth minute only for Aaron Cresswell to level in the 18th minute and although Jacob Murphey put Newcastle back in front before halftime, a second-half blitz saw Said Benrahma, Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio blitz Newcastle with three goals in 13 minutes, with Antonio also seeing a penalty saved in that spell.

Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-Min (2nd L) celebrates with teammates after scoring during the English Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, Britain on Aug. 15, 2021.

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick on Saturday as Manchester United beat Leeds United 5-1. Fernandes put his side ahead in the 30th minute and although Luke Ayling drew Leeds level three minutes after halftime, goals from Mason Greenwood and Fernandez in the 52nd and 54th minute decided the game before Fernandes completed his hat-trick on 60 minutes and Fred made it 5-1 eight minutes later.

Jadon Sancho made his debut as a late substitute to end a perfect start for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Chelsea also got off to a confident start as they ruined Patrick Viera’s debut as Crystal Palace coach with a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge, with Marcos Alonso and Christian Pulisic putting them 2-0 up at the break before defender Trevor Chalobah scored his first Premier League goal just before the hour.

Virgil van Dijk was back in defense as Liverpool spoiled Norwich’s return to the Premier League with a 3-0 win at Carrow Road with goals from strikers, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Jamie Vardy netted the only goal of the game as Leicester City kicked off their season with a 1-0 win at home to Wolves, who moved the ball around well, but looked blunt in attack.

Rafa Benitez may not have been a popular choice to replace Carlo Ancelotti, but the former Liverpool boss’ stock will have risen after second-half goals from Richarlison, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin helped his side win after conceding an early Adam Armstrong goal against Southampton.

Watford had a winning return to the top flight with goals from Emmanuel Bonaventure, Ismaila Sarr and ‘Cucho’ Hernandez taking them to a 3-2 victory at home to Aston Villa.

Goals from Neal Maupay and Alex McAlister saw Brighton overturn James Tarkovski’s second-minute opener for Burnley to take all three points at Turf Moor.

Newly promoted Brentford kicked off the new season in winning style on Friday night as goals in each half from Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard gave them a 2-0 win over a very disappointing Arsenal.

Liverpool's Roberto Firmino celebrates scoring the second goal during the 2021-2022 season English Premier League first round match against Norwich City in Norwich, Britain, on Aug. 14, 2021.
