A German tourist visiting Phuket has become the third confirmed case of monkeypox in Thailand, the Disease Control Department (DCD) chief announced on Wednesday.

Third monkeypox case in Thailand confirmed

Director-general Dr Opas Karnkawinpong told reporters after a meeting of senior officials at the Public Health Ministry that the third case of monkeypox had been confirmed in a lab test.

He said the tourist was a 25-year-old man who entered Thailand on July 18 to visit Phuket.

The provincial administration will report the detailed timeline of the German tourist to the DCD as soon as possible in a bid to find and monitor all people who came into close contact with him.

Opas said that shortly after the tourist entered Thailand, he developed symptoms, so the DCD believed he contracted the virus before entering the country.

The man had visited Thailand several times earlier, the DCD chief added.

Health officials are trying to locate all the people who had been in close contact with the German tourist to monitor their condition. So far, none of the identified persons known to have been in close contact with him have tested positive.

Opas said those who come in close contact with monkeypox patients must be monitored for 21 days, during which they do not have to be quarantined but should not touch or be in close contact with others.

He noted that all the three confirmed cases so far are men.

“This is in line with World Health Organisation data that 98 per cent of the patients are homosexual men,” he said.

The two other confirmed patients detected in Thailand are a Nigerian man and a Thai man, Opas added.

Covid-19 patients will soon be given Molnupiravir antiviral drugs instead of Favipiravir, the National Health Security Office (NHSO) said on Tuesday.

Covid patients to be handed Molnupiravir

On Monday, the Public Health Ministry delivered 150,000 Molnupiravir pills to the NHSO as the number of Covid-19 patients continued to rise.

NHSO secretary-general Jadet Thammathataree said Covid patients have been allowed to request antiviral drugs via the office’s 1330 call centre since July 23.

The NHSO delivered Favipiravir to 1,941 eligible patients from July 23 to 30, he said.

“However, the NHSO had failed to deliver antiviral drugs to 25 patients because their houses or companies were closed, officials failed to contact recipients or the recipients refused to take delivery,” Jadet said.

Molnupiravir will be delivered to patients who are at risk of developing severe symptoms, including the elderly aged 60 or above and patients with chronic diseases, such as kidney disease, diabetes or cancer, he said.

The NHSO will not deliver Molnupiravir to pregnant women or nursing mothers, Jadet added.

Suchal, 37, also known on social media as “Buk Babor”, showed up at the Central Investigation Bureau in Bangkok on Tuesday to file charges against the association over the “unauthorised” use of his artwork for the 31st Southeast Asian Games held in Vietnam in May.

Suchal said he had negotiated with the association three times, with mediators from the Department of Intellectual Property present, but could not reach a mutual agreement as the association insisted it was considering a compensation of 50,000 to 100,000 baht despite his demand of 1 million baht.

He said the artwork is a result of his skill and creativity, and the association’s use of the logo has created a misconception that he gave away the right to use it. He is therefore demanding proper compensation for unauthorised use of his work especially in a highly visible setting such as the SEA Games.

On May 12 the Pencak Silat Association issued a statement apologising and claiming use of the logo was based on misunderstanding among the team responsible for athletes’ outfits.

Victims of a U-turn bridge collapse on Rama II Road will be given compensation ranging from 80,000 to 500,000 baht under the terms of respective insurance companies, the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) announced on Tuesday.

Victims of U-turn bridge collapse to get THB80,000-500,000 compensation

On the night of July 31, a five-tonne, 10-metre-long concrete beam fell off the U-turn bridge and plunged onto a car while damaging a pick-up truck, killing two people and injuring five others. The bridge, which is under maintenance, is located in front of Vibharam Hospital in Samut Sakhon’s Muang district.

OIC secretary-general Suthipol Taweechaikarn said on Tuesday that one of the deceased, who was driving the car, would be given 500,000 baht of compulsory motor insurance under Thanachart Insurance.

Medical bills up to a maximum of 80,000 baht will be covered for each of the five who were injured: one passenger of the car and the other four in the pickup truck. In case they lose an organ or become permanently disabled, they will be given between 200,000 and 500,000 baht, he said. The pickup truck has compulsory Muang Thai motor insurance.

The other diseased person was a bridge worker who had personal accident insurance with Dhipaya Insurance. His family will get 100,000 baht.

Suthipol said the OIC’s Samut Sakhon Office is coordinating with the insurance companies to make sure they provide the compensation as soon as possible.

“Accidents could happen to anyone at any time. It is highly recommended to have voluntary insurance in case an unexpected incident occurs where compulsory insurance does not provide coverage,” Suthipol advised.

“If you have any inquiry regarding insurance, contact OIC hotline 1186,” he added.

The Cabinet earmarked 2.021 billion baht on Tuesday for reimbursing hospitals that have treated and provided Covid-19 vaccines to people not entitled to free medical services.

THB2-bn set aside to cover Covid treatment, jabs for non-Thais

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said the funds will be used to reimburse hospitals that have treated or vaccinated non-Thais for Covid from October 2021 to June 2022.

Of the budget, 1.923 billion baht will cover treatment expenses, while 98 million baht will cover the vaccination cost.

Initially, hospitals could not claim reimbursement from the National Health Security Office (NHSO) because the treatment and vaccines were provided to either stateless or non-Thai persons who did not contribute to the Social Security Services.

Thanakorn added that another 14.51 billion baht has been set aside to cover risk allowance, overtime and extra-work payments to medical personnel in six projects related to the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said the funds will be allocated to the Emergency Health Division, the Public Health Permanent Secretariat, the Medical Services Department, the Medical Sciences Department, the Mental Health Department and the Health Department.
