The Education Ministry announced on Saturday that as of Thursday, more than 864,000 students in the 12-18 age range had received one jab of the Pfizer mRNA vaccine.

Though the Royal College of Paediatricians has advised that boys aged 12-16 be only given one jab to prevent the risk of myocarditis or heart inflammation, the Public Health Ministry is reconsidering this advice.

“The ministry will next Wednesday discuss whether boys in the 12-16 age group should get a second jab,” deputy government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said.

“Hopefully we will have a conclusion before October 25, when medics will start administering second jabs.

“To avoid confusion, parents should ignore information from unconfirmed sources and only follow official updates from the Public Health Ministry.”

According to the Public Health Ministry’s plans, children aged 12 to 18 are to get their first and second jabs at an interval of three to four weeks starting from October 4.

Separately, the Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Ministry reported that about a million doses have been provided to students and staffers at colleges and universities, Ratchada said.

“Of these, about 616,000 people have received their first jab, while some 384,000 people have been fully vaccinated.

“So far, over 4.07 million children aged between 12 and 18 have registered for inoculation with the communicable disease committee in each province,” she added.

“This number is higher than the Public Health Ministry’s previous estimate of 3.61 million children booking jabs.”

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported that though the Kompasu storm has weakened, strong southwest monsoon still prevails across the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand.

This will bring isolated showers to many parts of the country over the next 24 hours.

Also, the monsoon trough lying across the Central and lower Northeast regions has brought flash floods to Prachin Buri and Nakhon Nayok over Friday and Saturday. More than 410 households in three districts have been affected.

Though the tropical depression Lionrock weakened to a low-pressure cell, it still brought heavy rain to the North, Northeast, Central, East and South (west coast) over the past week. Nine provinces, namely Chiang Mai, Lampang, Loei, Phetchabun, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi, Trat, Chumphon, and Ranong, were hit with flash floods and 7,931 households in 20 districts were affected.

Though flooding has eased in most of the provinces, 3,317 households in seven districts of Chanthaburi and Trat are still suffering.

Meanwhile, more than 33 provinces have been battered by the Dianmu storm from September 23 to October 7, affecting 333,367 households in 225 districts. The storm also claimed 14 lives – 11 in Lopburi, two in Phetchabun and one in Chai Nat.

Of the 33, nine provinces are still swamped with 83,271 households in 40 districts affected. The nine inundated provinces are Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Nakhon Ratchasima, Lopburi, Suphan Buri, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani.

Though floods have more or less cleared, lowland areas are still struggling. DDPM said it is cooperating with provincial authorities to survey the damage and is providing help in line with the Finance Ministry’s order.

The Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is cracking down on the sellers of fake antigen test kits (ATK) and other medical devices.

Supatra Boonserm, FDA’s deputy secretary-general, said many medical devices ranging from ATKs to pulse oximeters and thermometers that have not been authorised by the FDA are being sold openly. Some fake ATK units are going for as little as 40 baht, she said and advised people against using them as they produce inaccurate results.

She said the FDA-authorised ATKs are not all expensive.

Meanwhile, she said, the FDA has received many complaints and is taking legal action against 38 sellers. It has also blocked 4,500 links leading to websites advertising fake ATKs.

The FDA recently joined the Consumer Protection Police Division in raiding Bangkok’s Sampheng area and caught several offenders. The hunt will be expanded to other areas, the FDA said.

As for people who want to avoid spending too much on ATKs, Supatra said the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) will be selling units at 40 baht per piece from Monday. However, she said, the GPO only has 2 million units.

The FDA has also recently joined hands with many e-retailers to sell authorised ATKs. The FDA logo and detailed information on usage are displayed by the e-retailers.

Separately, GPO’s deputy managing director Sirikul Matevelungsun said the 40-baht ATKs can be bought at any GPO pharmacy from Monday onwards. However, the GPO is limited to one box of 20 units per person. Organisations or companies can also order the kits via GPO’s sales division and deliveries will be made in November.

Only some 40 per cent of tourism-related businesses in Satun’s Koh Lipe have started operating since the island was reopened on Friday.

The Lipe Business Owners and Entrepreneurs Association said local businesses have suffered badly from the drastic drop in tourism due to Covid-19. Also, it said, many businesses were small and could not seek help from financial institutions on their own.

The association said more businesses will reopen once tourism picks up.

Bangkok’s Chong Nonsi canal area, which is being turned into a beautiful walkway, will be open to visitors from December 25, governor Aswin Kwanmuang announced on Facebook on Saturday.

He said the canal section running from Sathorn Road to Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra 7 still required some work, but it should be done by Christmas Day.

The walkway is expected to be completely finished by August next year, Aswin said, adding that it will also feature exercising areas and an artificial waterfall.

The Bangkok communicable disease committee said on Friday that it is relaxing some Covid-19 preventive measures from Saturday onwards in line with the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration’s announcement a day earlier.

Under the new orders the curfew hours have been shortened to 11pm to 3am and:

• Restaurants, cafes, cinemas, theatres, malls, community malls, stadiums and parks can open until 10pm.

• Game centres, playgrounds and water parks at malls or community malls remain closed.

• Seminars and events can be held at malls, community malls, hotel exhibition centres until 10pm. No alcohol can be served at these events and food must be prepacked and served separately.

• Fresh markets, flea markets and convenience stores can operate until 10pm.

• Elderly daycare centres can operate as usual.

• Playgrounds can be reopened at the discretion of each district office.

• Gatherings of 50 persons or more are illegal.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Friday that Thais should be proud that Hollywood star Russel Crowe has been all praise about the Phuket Sandbox scheme.

The Australian actor, who is in Thailand to film his next Hollywood blockbuster “The Greatest Beer Run Ever”, said on Twitter on Monday: “Go and look at Phuket. I’m sure the rest of the country has amazing experiences to share too.”

Crowe entered Thailand in late September via the Phuket Sandbox scheme and put up at the Amanpuri luxury resort.

While in Phuket, Crowe said he was pleased to be “confined to the island, not a room”, adding that the flexibility of the quarantine scheme was unlike anything he had experienced before.

The 57-year-old superstar, who won the Best Actor Oscar for “Gladiator”, also tweeted that Australia will soon allow its people to travel to Thailand. He added that he has been travelling globally to shoot films since 1991, but this is the first time he has spent an extended period in Thailand. Usually, he said, he only stopped off in Thailand to transfer flights.

“It is good news that a world-class actor is pointing out the positive aspects of Thailand,” Prayut said. “The government aims to unlock the movie-making business in the country as soon as possible, which will bring foreign filmmakers and more tourists to Thailand.

“People must fully cooperate with the government to help restart our economy while following all disease control measures to stay safe,” the premier said.

A resort house worth Bt5 million located in Mae Krabung subdistrict of Kanchanaburi Province is now being demolished after the court ruled that it has encroached on about 14 rai of land that belongs to Khuean Srinagarindra National Park. 

The group of 11 offenders lead by Cherdchu Thongcheewong, an investor living in Bangkok, were arrested in September 2002 for encroaching on national park lands. They were later acquitted by the court due to lack of intention and were ordered to demolish the house or pay the demolition fee of Bt379,924, including an interest of 25 per cent per year.

“Recent survey by park officials revealed that the demolition is still not complete after nearly 20 years,” said Yutthaphong Damsrisuk, chief of Khuean Srinagarindra National Park. “Cherdchu submitted a letter to national park office on October 11 asking to bring in machines for demolition. He also added that the job is about 30 per cent done and will require another month to complete.”

Yutthaphong added after the house is removed, park officials will start restoring the areas which used to be a creek that provided water source for nearby forests.

Ministry of Public Health reported on Saturday (October 16) morning that in the past 24 hours there are 10,648 new patients who tested positive for Covid-19, 111 of whom have been found in prisons.

Death toll increased by 82, while 10,794 patients were cured and allowed to leave hospitals.

The country’s total caseload from Covid-19 stands at 1,772,838 – 1,647,255 of whom have recovered, 107,378 are still in hospitals and 18,205 have died.

Separately, another 524,670 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, 275,163 their second shot and 16,266 a booster, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationwide to 64,139,022.

According to Worldometer, confirmed cases globally had risen to 240.84 million on Saturday, 218.11 million of whom have recovered, 17.83 million are active cases (79,389 in severe condition) and 4.9 million have died (up by 6,970).

Thailand ranks 24th in the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 45.74 million, followed by India with 34.05 million, Brazil with 21.63 million, the UK with 8.36 million and Russia with 7.93 million.
