Eateries hunt for space outside malls to survive lockdown

Some restaurant and food shop owners have started hunting for places to rent after the government decided to close their operations in malls from Tuesday as part of new lockdown measures.

The brands looking to relocate are Potato Corner, After You, Shinkanzen Sushi and Zen. In a joint statement, the eateries said they were looking for spots to rent temporarily outside malls with different requirements and durations.

On Tuesday, most businesses in shopping malls, including banks and restaurants, were ordered to close under the government’s measure to deal with the pandemic. This time, only supermarkets, pharmacies and vaccination sites inside malls can remain open.

Stretched rescue staff toil day in day out as Covid fatalities increase

Rescue staff attired in vital PPE suits are going to the limits after Covid-19 infections and fatalities have increased alarmingly in Thailand, especially among the unfortunate homeless, at least four of whom so far have already died on the streets, according to the latest reports.

In one case, an anonymous man passed away on a Bangkok street on Tuesday. His body stayed on the street for many hours as there were not enough personnel to come and collect it.
People have voiced panic and distress at the occurrence and expect cases like this to increase.
Rescue staff responsible for the area said later that both personnel and equipment to deal with cases related to Covid-19 were limited. The staff are presently working hard day after tiring day without a break.
People are requesting related organisations to increase their staffing numbers and equipment in order to handle an expected rise in such fatalities.

Covid-19 vaccine importers asked to draw up purchase plan to deal with more virus mutations

The Public Health Ministry urged six Covid-19 vaccine importers on Tuesday to prepare a procurement plan for next year in order to deal with expected virus mutations.

Six Covid-19 vaccine importers attended the meeting – AstraZeneca (Thailand), Pfizer (Thailand), Zuellig Pharma, Janssen-Cilag, Biogenetech and the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO).

Department of Disease Control director-general Opas Karnkawinpong said the National Vaccine Committee has resolved to procure 120 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines next year covering mRNA, viral vector and inactivated types.

He said six Covid-19 vaccine importers have reported progress in new vaccine development, production capacity, delivery schedules and vaccination methods.

“Each party will apply information received during the meeting and report on their progress periodically,” Opas said.

He also said he was grateful that a local inactivated vaccine developed by the GPO had passed the first human-trial phase as it would help the country combat the virus mutation in the future.

He added that the ministry would discuss procuring other types of Covid-19 vaccines later, such as protein-based sub-unit ones.
