Four reportedly homeless men found dead on Bangkok streets, suspected to be virus victims

Facebook users on Tuesday shared photos of an unidentified man wearing a purple shirt and black pants who reportedly passed out at 10am on a street near Wat Bowonniwet Temple in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district. Rescue staff were called and arrived at 2pm, only to find that he had already died.

Suspected of contracting Covid-19, the body was left on the street waiting for specialised collection by medical personnel, who arrived only at 10pm due to other urgent duties in Kannayao district.

After collecting the man’s body, officials were immediately called to pick up another body of a man who was found dead at 6pm on the sidewalk on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue. Suspected of contracting Covid-19, his body was also left there until specialised staff in PPE outfits arrived at 10.30pm.

A news source revealed on Wednesday that there were two other cases of men being found dead on the streets of Bangkok – one in front of Lotus Rama IV in Thong Lor district and the other on the sidewalk on Hathairat Road in Khlong Toei district.

“Officials suspected they all died of Covid-19 and were homeless as they had no record of residence, and no relatives have shown up yet to claim any of the bodies,” the source added.

Isolated heavy rains forecast for many parts of Thailand

The upper North, the Central region, the East and the South’s west coast are likely to experience isolated heavy showers because of a monsoon trough, while the southwest monsoon across the country, the Andaman Sea and and the Gulf of Thailand is intensifying, the Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.

It advised people in upper Thailand to beware of the severe conditions and accumulated rain water that may cause flash floods, while warning all ships to proceed with caution and small boats to stay ashore as waves in the upper Andaman Sea are 2-3 metres high and will be more than 3 metres during thundershowers.

The department also mentioned that tropical storm Cempaka over the coast of southern China has moved inland there but will not directly affect Thailand.

Here’s the weather forecast for the next 24 hours:

North: Thundershowers in 70 per cent of the area with isolated heavy rains; temperature lows of 23-26 degrees and highs of 28-32 degrees Celsius.

Infections can only be curbed with mass testing, more jabs, says professor #SootinClaimon.Com

Infections can only be curbed with mass testing, more jabs, says professor

As soon as Covid-19 arrived in Wuhan, China introduced a timely lockdown and dared to make strong decisions despite the enormous damage, Assoc Prof Dr Piti Srisaengnam from Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Economics said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

Wuhan was put under full lockdown, with nobody allowed out of their homes, no public transport and all borders closed. Residents were only allowed out of their homes three times a week to grab food.

However, he said, when there was an outbreak in Guangzhou, the authorities deployed tracking technology, launched intensive virus checks and offered easy and quick access to jabs.

Piti pointed out that the Guangzhou model was more effective and less painful because it was well planned and well implemented.

“Leaders should have the courage to make strong decisions based on careful, well-rounded information and should have plans to support this decision,” he said.

Hence, he said, for the ongoing lockdown to be successful, the authorities must provide proactive testing 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with fully vaccinated volunteers. He also said that the authorities should ensure strict law enforcement without discrimination, provide food and necessities to people under quarantine, and most importantly, accelerate mass vaccination.

“In this situation, Thailand requires strong leaders who can implement comprehensive measures,” Piti said.

Bangkok to reduce public transport in bid to curb infections

In a bid to control the unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases in the capital, Bangkok governor Pol General Aswin Kwanmuang met public transport agencies on Tuesday to come up with ways of slowing down transmissions.

At the meeting, the agencies resolved to halve the number of passengers on each trip from tomorrow to August 2. They have also decided to reduce the number of trips offered by buses, trains and canal or river boats during this period.

However, the governor said that if these measures see people waiting in long queues for a long time, then the measures will be adjusted.

Front-line medics first in queue for donated Pfizer jabs in Aug, beauty salons must wait

Vaccination of front-line medics with 1.5 million Pfizer jabs donated by the US government will begin next month, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) announced on Tuesday.

Department chief Dr Opas Karnkawinpong said the donated vaccine will arrive at the end of this month.

Thailand today signed a separate deal with Pfizer to purchase 20 million vaccine doses, which are due to arrive in the fourth quarter this year.

The 1.5 million donated doses will be allocated to vaccinate public health staff treating Covid-19 patients. Also in line for the donated Pfizer jabs are doctors who have already received two doses of vaccine, at-risk groups in Dark Red provinces, and expats in infection hotspots. The medics will be first to get the jabs in August.

Meanwhile, private hospitals and beauty salons have also requested vaccine, though some do not meet the allocation criteria.

“We will administer doses to front-line medical and public health staff first, so organisations who have sent the wrong registration list will not be approved,” Dr Opas said. Each provincial communicable disease committee will review jab-registrations before sending them to the central agency, he added.

State of emergency extended for 2 months amid dire warning from Health Ministry

The Cabinet extended the nationwide state of emergency for another two months until September 30, government spokesman Traisulee Traisoranakul said on Tuesday.

The emergency was extended to tackle surging Covid-19 infections, with 288,643 cases reported between April 1 and July 9.

The epidemic is centred on Bangkok and surrounding provinces, where the caseload is now rising by thousands each day with dozens of fatalities every 24 hours. Bangkok logged 2,764 new cases and 41 deaths on Tuesday. Greater Bangkok, which includes surrounding provinces, recorded 5,468 new cases.

The Public Health Ministry warned that unless tighter restrictions are imposed, the current daily caseload of more than 10,000 new infections would generate more than 100,000 new cases over the next two weeks. This would bring the public health system to the point of collapse, it said. The state of emergency allows authorities to impose special measures to control the spread of Covid-19.

Foodpanda rider denies lese majeste over burning of royal portrait

A foodpanda delivery rider on Tuesday denied charges of burning royal portrait during an anti-government protest on Sunday, claiming he was attempting to put out the flames.

Pathum Thani police on Monday arrested Sitthichoke Setsawet and charged him with lese majeste, arson, and breaching the Covid-19 emergency decree against public gatherings.

The suspect was interrogated at Nang Loeng Police Station where he admitted to participating in the protest but denied setting fire to the royal portrait, said Deputy Metropolitan Police chief Piya Tawichai.

“However, police have evidence that proves the suspect burned a royal picture,” he said, adding that Sitthichoke will be detained at the Criminal Court on Ratchadapisek Road.

He also revealed that police officers were interrogating the 16 protesters arrested earlier for their role in Sunday’s rally.

“Investigating officers are collecting evidence to issue arrest warrants on other protesters who allegedly took part in the anti-government protest on Sunday,” he added.

Police fired tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets at protesters who tried to break through a barrier guarding Government House. The protesters were demanding the resignation of PM Prayut Chan-o-cha and his government, cuts to the military and monarchy’s budget during the pandemic, and importation of mRNA vaccines to fight the surge in Covid-19 infections.

Meanwhile, Sitthichoke’s girlfriend testified that he was attempting to put out the flames on the royal portrait.

She added that he was at the protest site on Sunday to deliver food to protesters.

She also asked social media users to stop condemning her boyfriend by sharing fake information.

Live music, gorgeous views and aerobics – the upside of quarantine in Nakhon Phanom #SootinClaimon.Com

Live music, gorgeous views and aerobics – the upside of quarantine in Nakhon Phanom

If there was a competition for the best place to quarantine in Thailand, Nakhon Phanom might just take the gold medal.

People isolating in the Northeast border province are being treated to musical performances and gorgeous views of the Mekong River at a luxury hotel in Muang Nakhon Phanom district.

So far, over 60 people have undergone quarantine at the hotel, which is reserved for travellers returning from provinces at high risk of Covid-19.

Nakhon Phanom’s daily caseload has risen to more than 50 infections over the past week.

Wachirachet Kitpornsirikul, deputy mayor of the municipality, said Nakhon Phanom locals have been instructed not to make trips in or out of the province unless absolute.

Those who return from provinces at risk of Covid-19 infection must undergo 14-day quarantine even if they test negative, he added.

“In response, the operator of this eight-storey hotel decided to convert it into a local quarantine facility to support locals during the Covid-19 crisis,” he said.

Adding to the hotel’s suitability as a quarantine destination were its beautiful vistas of the Mekong River, Wachirachet said. Even better, the accommodation is free, with the municipality picking up the bill of 500 baht per room per night.

“To relieve the stress of quarantine, the hotel is staging a musical play every Wednesday and Saturday,” he added.

Pawinee Somnawat, director of the municipality’s public health and environment department, said the department is also organising aerobics activities for people quarantining at the hotel.

Meanwhile, their symptoms are being observed by department officials, who will refer them to Nakhon Phanom Hospital if necessary.

“The hotel will be used as a local quarantine facility until the Covid-19 situation resolves,” she added.
