Grounded by a pandemic

The latest photos of a forlorn Don Mueang airport in Bangkok are a painful reminder that Thailand’s tourism and economy are in a worrying state. Almost zero traveller was found in the building, which was once the top airport in the country before Suvarnabhumi Airport was opened.

Don Mueang was the second airfield established in Thailand, after Sa Pathum airfield, which was now Sa Pathum horse racing course in Bangkok.

Don Mueang airport was opened on March 27, 1914, over a 107 years ago.

People, merchants told to avoid hoarding goods amid lockdown

The Department of Internal Trade has urged people not to hoard consumer products during lockdown, assuring that there will be enough supply for everyone.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Friday imposed a partial 14-day lockdown including partial curfew in Bangkok and nine other “Dark Red” provinces from Monday, to combat surging virus cases and deaths. The provinces are: Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla.

“The department has asked all department stores, wholesalers and retailers nationwide to increase their stock of consumer products to ensure there will be no shortage during the lockdown,” Watthanasak Sua-Iam, the Department of Internal Trade director-general, said on Friday.

“Moreover, we have urged egg farmer associations in affected provinces to fix farm price and supply eggs to all markets in the areas regularly during the lockdown,” he added. “All associations have insisted that there will be enough supply of eggs for people’s consumption.”

Watthanasak also warned that hoarding of goods would be a violation of the Price of Goods and Service Act and punishable with a maximum seven years in prison, or THB140,000 fine, or both.

“If you witness product hoarding or unfair pricing, contact the department’s hotline at 1569,” he added.

Curfew, partial lockdown for Bangkok and nearby provinces from Monday

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Friday imposed a partial lockdown including curfew for Bangkok and nine other “Dark Red” provinces from Monday (July 12), to combat surging virus cases and deaths.

The lockdown covers five provinces around Bangkok – Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon – as well as Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla in the far South.

Lockdown measures in the nine provinces are as follows:

• Work from home encouraged

• Interprovincial travel discouraged

• Public transport must stop operating from 9pm to 3am

• Convenience stores must close from 8pm to 4am

• Malls closed except for food courts, pharmacies, supermarkets. restaurants, banks, financial institutions, and electronics shops which can stay open until 8pm

• Restaurants, food stalls or cafés must close by 8pm

• Closure of spas, beauty clinics and massage shops

• Gatherings of more than five people banned

• Closure of all schools

• 10pm-4am curfew

The police and Army have been instructed to set up checkpoints from Saturday to ensure compliance with the measures. The CCSA announcement did not say how long the measures would last, though earlier this week authorities proposed a 14-day partial lockdown.

Meanwhile, the government aims to vaccinate 1 million people aged 60 and over in the next one or two weeks. Authorities said the US government’s donation of 1.5 million Pfizer vaccine doses will be distributed to Dark-Red provinces to inoculate medics, seniors, people with chronic health conditions, foreigners and priority groups including students, diplomats and athletes.

BMA sets up community isolation centres to tackle surge in Covid cases

In a bid to handle soaring Covid-19 cases in the capital, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) opened a community isolation centre inside Bangkok Noi’s Wat Sri Sudaram temple on Friday.

“Infected patients will stay here while they are waiting for beds in hospitals or field hospitals to become available,” Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang said. “This isolation centre will eventually help curb the spread of the virus and prevent possible cluster cases.”

The Wat Sri Sudaram isolation centre can accommodate 90 patients – 55 men and 35 women. The centre is equipped with CCTVs, thermal scanners, oximeters, an infectious waste isolation room, etc, and will be overseen by medics from Ratchapipat Hospital. Each patient will be provided with a bed, a blanket, a pillow, a mosquito net, and a supply of gloves and facemasks.

After the opening of this centre, Aswin travelled to Wat Inthara Wihan temple in Phra Nakhon district to open another community isolation centre, which can accommodate 200 patients.
