With parents getting pulled away from their children over Covid-19 infections, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has set up a special community isolation facility for children between the ages of three and 14.

Since April, some 2,738 children up to the age of 15 have tested positive and been separated from their families. Similarly, infected parents have had to be removed to intensive care units for treatment, leaving children with mild conditions at home for self-isolation.

In a bid to ease parents’ worries about their children, BMA has set up a special community isolation centre for children aged between three and 14 at the Kiakkai Health Centre in Dusit district.

The centre will provide special activities and toys for the children to help them relax and keep them busy. There is also a team of doctors, volunteer babysitters and teachers at hand. All the children are closely monitored and will be sent to hospital immediately if they show any symptoms that require medical care.

People in maximum-control (dark red) provinces can register for Sinopharm vaccination at Chulabhorn Royal Academy (CRA) from next week. The dark-red provinces are Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan.

CRA secretary-general Nithi Mahanon, who is also director of Chulabhorn Hospital, announced on Facebook that one million Sinopharm doses have been allocated for vaccination in dark-red provinces. More doses will arrive on July 18 and 25, he added.

Individuals can begin applying for the jabs next week, with red-zone provinces served first. Registration will be conducted in phases of 20,000 people per round. The CRA did not reveal how much it would charge for the jabs, as negotiations are underway with China’s Sinopharm over the price.

Rapid antigen test push accelerates in hospitals as contagion spreads #SootinClaimon.Com

The Public Health Ministry is accelerating its rapid antigen test push in a bid to speed up detection of cases amid soaring Covid-19 infections.

The rapid testing drive was discussed by medical agencies on Thursday, said Medical Sciences Department director-general Dr Supakit Sirilak. Thursday saw a record daily high of 7,058 infections and 75 deaths.

Thailand’s Food and Drugs Agency (FDA) has approved 24 brands of rapid antigen test kits for use in hospitals and testing centres.

Supakit said authorities are now considering whether to make the rapid test kits available for home use, but warned they were not 100 per cent accurate.

“Please understand that a negative rapid test result does not mean you are completely non-infectious,” he said. Meanwhile, those who test positive may need a RT-PCR test to confirm infection, he added.

He also gave the following guidelines for rapid antigen testing:

Suspected cases with no symptoms whose antigen test is negative should self-isolate at home and then take another rapid test a few days later. If they test positive, the result must be confirmed by an RT-PCR test.

However, at-risk groups and people with symptoms should take an RT-PCR test straight away, said Supakit. Medical units facing high demand could give rapid antigen tests first, though, he added.

The Department of Health posed the question “Are you ready for lockdown?” on its Facebook page on Thursday, triggering a flood of comments from members of the public.

As of 3pm, the post had received 1,400 likes, 478 comments and 1,900 shares.

The majority of commenters said they were ready for lockdown but added the government must launch Covid-19 relief measures and speed up the vaccination drive.

Meanwhile, the hashtag #ล็อกดาวน์ (“Lockdown) became the top Twitter trend on Thursday, after the Public Health Ministry proposed a 14-day semi-lockdown in high-risk zones.

Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan have been listed as high-risk zones since May 15.

Under the proposal, interprovincial travel will be banned while shopping and public transport hours will be limited in a bid to keep as many people at home as possible.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said it will consider the proposal at an emergency meeting on Friday.

Thailand’s daily caseload hit a new high of 7,058 infections and 75 deaths on Thursday, driven by the fast-spreading Delta variant which now accounts for over 50 per cent of new cases in Bangkok.

All appointments for Moderna jabs were snapped up just seconds after registration opened at Phyathai 2 Hospital in Bangkok on Thursday.

Each customer was permitted to reserve up to two doses of the alternative vaccine at 1,650 baht per dose.

They were required to pay the full amount up front in exchange for an e-coupon. The booking cannot be cancelled or refunded, but can be transferred to another recipient, said the hospital.

The Moderna jab is an alternative to the Sinovac and AstraZeneca jabs directly procured by the government for its free vaccination rollout.

Disappointed customers complained they had registered for the Moderna shot at 12.01pm only to find that registration was closed because appointments had all been snapped up.

The hospital explained that its whole vaccine quota allotted by the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation had been booked up, though it did not reveal how many jabs it had been given.

Bangkok recorded 2,212 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday as the country registered a daily record of 7,058 infections and 75 deaths.

People in Greater Bangkok flocked to supermarkets on Thursday to stock up on food and basic necessities to prepare for a possible lockdown.

The shopping frenzy was sparked by the Public Health Ministry’s proposal that provinces under maximum and strict control be put under lockdown for 14 days.

Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan have been listed as areas under maximum strict control since May 15.

Police were alerted when a local spotted a body floating in the Chao Phraya River near the Phibul Songkram pier in Nonthaburi’s Suan Yai area on Wednesday evening.

The body was identified as that of 59-year-old Laksana (last name withheld) from Bang Khae district. The cause of death was put down as drowning, though police also found a .22 calibre gun in the man’s pocket with one bullet inside.

The deceased man’s family reportedly said Laksana had been missing since Tuesday. Police found his motorbike on Krung Thon Bridge and it is believed he may have jumped into the river from there. The bridge is about 6 kilometres from where the body was found.

The family said Laksana had tested positive for Covid-19 a few days ago and was advised by the hospital to isolate himself until an ambulance is sent to pick him up.

Laksana’s brother reportedly said that before his sibling went missing, he had complained that he had trouble breathing and said he could not wait any longer for the ambulance.

The body has been transported to the Central Institute of Forensic Science for autopsy.

Chachoengsao patient goes berserk, threatens to slit guard’s throat #SootinClaimon.Com

A 36-year-old patient in Chachoengsao’s Buddhasothorn Hospital threatened to slit a guard’s throat yesterday when the guard tried to break up a brawl between the patient and hospital staff.

The patient is being treated for mental illness.

Witness Panfa Suwankul said she arrived at the hospital to find the patient fighting with staff at the hospital’s emergency room entrance. When a security guard tried to intervene, the patient threatened him with a utility cutter, forcing the guard to retreat.

Six local police officers then showed up with catchpoles to try and corner the attacker. However, they were not able to hold him back for too long, and the patient managed to make his way to the hospital building.

Medics inside the hospital knew how to deal with mentally ill patients and managed to sedate him. The patient was then returned to the psychiatric department and tied to his bed.

This is not the first case of a patient attacking hospital staff.

On Tuesday, a female psychiatric patient in Chulalongkorn Hospital stabbed a doctor in the chest with a fruit knife. Though the doctor was critically wounded, she is now out of danger.

A hospital worker said the patient had been admitted to the hospital because she was suffering from study-related stress. The patient stabbed the doctor while being examined.

Chearavanont brothers ranked richest in Thailand by Forbes #SootinClaimon.Com

Forbes ranked the Chearavanont brothers as the richest persons in Thailand in 2021, followed by Chalerm Yoovidhya, Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, the Chirathivat family and Sarath Ratanavadi.

According to the Forbes, Thailand’s economy contracted by 6.1 per cent in 2020, recording its biggest drop in more than two decades due to stalled tourism.

Despite a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases this year, the government has pledged to reopen the tourist haven to vaccinated foreign visitors by October, with Phuket having reopened on July 1.

Buoyed by the prospect of a recovery and an uptick in exports, the benchmark stock index surged 43 per cent since fortunes were last measured 15 months ago, the magazine noted. That rise helped boost the combined wealth of the kingdom’s richest men by over a fifth to US$160 billion (THB5.16 trillion), it said.

The tycoons on the 2021 Forbes list of Thailand’s 50 richest added more than 20 per cent to their combined wealth of $160 billion, despite the impact of Covid-19 on the tourism-dependent economy, the magazine said.

The Chearavanont brothers of Charoen Pokphand Group retain their top spot with a net worth of $30.2 billion, up from $27.3 billion last year.

The July 2021 issue of Forbes Asia also featured Bangkok Bank president Chartsiri Sophonpanich on its cover. Chartsiri’s net worth is reported to be $1.15 billion.

Some Bangkokians were willing to queue overnight just so they could get tested for Covid-19 first thing on Thursday morning. Their fear is that the authorities will run out of test kits as supplies are limited.

Bangkok authorities are providing free tests for the public at Wat Phra Sri Mahathat Woramahawihan temple in Bang Khen area from July 5 to 11. Tests are limited to 900 walk-ins daily between 8am and 4pm.

Reports say that people wanting to get tested first thing on Thursday began queuing up from around 8pm on Wednesday outside the temple. They were eventually let into the temple grounds at around midnight. Many had come armed with mats and tents for the overnight wait.
