A group of protesters on Wednesday called on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to step down if he fails to immediately tackle rising pork prices and the increasing cost of living.

Protesters to Prayut: Bring down pork prices or resign

The so-called Ramkhamhaeng Students Network for Democracy gathered to protest but were blocked by police before they could enter Phitsanulok Road to rally in front of Government House.

Police used metal barriers to block the Panitchakarn and Misakawan intersections as well as the Panitchakarn to Wat Bencha intersections to prevent the protesters from getting close to the Government House compound.

As a result, the demonstrators rallied in front of Thon Buri Commercial College at the Panitchakarn Intersection. In a symbolic protest, they threw vegetables for feeding pigs onto the road behind the barriers.

The group read from a statement that Prayut and other ministers must control the prices of consumer goods and bring down oil prices so that the public won’t to shoulder heavy expenses.

The group also called on the government to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever and be transparent on the issue while rehabilitating affected pig farmers.

“We hope the government will solve these problems urgently to alleviate the grievances of the people. During the past eight years of administration, the Prayut governments have brought about endless problems for the people,” the statement said.

“If the government fails to tackle these problems, the Ramkhamhaeng Students network would like to call on General Prayut to resign because Thailand is not a playground for a test on administration.”

Protesters to Prayut: Bring down pork prices or resignTwo protesters painted words on their bodies to form a sentence reading: “Tu [Prayut] stays, pork is expensive throughout the land”.

Group leader Kritsana Klinkaew said the protesters would continue to rally if the government failed to solve the problems related to the rising cost of living and expensive pork.

Protesters to Prayut: Bring down pork prices or resignSompas Nilaphnt, an adviser to the PM’s Office, received the protesters’ complaints on behalf of the government before they dispersed peacefully.

Thai Democracy Protection Organisation secretary-general Srisuwan Janya on Wednesday blamed contract farming as the main cause for rising pork prices.

Srisuwan said he had sent a complaint to Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit to conduct an investigation into whether major agriculture business groups that have contracts with pig farmers had taken advantage of consumers by selling pork at inflated prices after buying pigs on the cheap from farmers.

Srisuwan said if the commerce minister refrains from taking action against these business groups, he would file a nonfeasance complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission or with the Central Administrative Court.

Srisuwan was referring to reports that have been played up by conventional and social media that a small-time pig farmer cried foul that he could not sell his pigs although the off-farm price was 60 baht per kilogramme.

Srisuwan said the owner of Banthom Farm did not reveal all the truth. He said the farm owner later allegedly admitted that he was actually under a farming contract to sell pigs to a business group at the rate of 60 baht per kg after he got the piglets from the group to raise for five months.

Srisuwan claimed there were three major agriculture tycoons who have contract-farming agreements with pig raisers and they should be investigated for inflating prices although pork is a merchandise under control of the Commerce Ministry.

The activist referred to reports that quoted Banthom Suksa, 70, the owner of Banthom Farm, that he had raised 1,500 pigs and could sell each at a guaranteed price of only 60 baht per kg.

Banthom reportedly said the pigs could be sold now as he had raised them for 150 days but no one came to his farm to buy the animals.

Thaksin: I got Omicron and have recovered

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Tuesday he had recovered after contracting the Covid-19 Omicron variant.

Thaksin: I got Omicron and have recovered

Speaking during Care Talk live on ClubHouse at 8pm on Tuesday, Thaksin said Thais don’t need to panic over Omicron.

The former prime minister said he had been earlier infected with Covid-19 and was in an intensive care unit for nine days not long after the pandemic started.

But when he contracted Omicron, he had common flu-like symptoms, including a sore throat and fever, that could be treated with medicine without having to go to hospital.

“I got Covid-19 again recently. It was the Omicron variant. I got it although I received four doses of vaccine. The first two jabs were Sinopharm and the last two Pfizer,” Thaksin said.

“The symptoms were like a mild common flu with sore throat and fever.”

He encouraged Thais to fully protect themselves, but said they should not fear Omicron too much as he believed the strain was the beginning of the end of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thaksin said he received treatment for five days to get over the mild symptoms but the virus remained until it was not detected in his system ten days after he got it.

“It’s like a common flu. We never take a test of the flu virus. We treat it and it’s gone. But if our body is weak, we can die from a common flu. Omicron is like that, so the government should not panic and should just prepare medicines for treatment,” Thaksin suggested.

Protesters rally at Government House over rising living costs

Hundreds of protestors gathered outside Government House on Tuesday, demanding relief from financial hardship caused by the rising cost of living.

Protesters rally at Government House over rising living costs

Protesters called on the government to reduce consumer goods prices, combat business monopolies and investigate an alleged cover-up of African Swine Fever blamed for rocketing pork prices.

They also demanded a minimum daily wage of Bt425, a rise in elderly monthly payments from Bt600 to Bt3,000, a monthly child-support subsidy of Bt1,200 and a reduction in VAT and school fees.

The demands were made in a joint statement by the Labour Network for People’s Rights, the 24 June Democracy Group, Nonthaburi’s New Generation Network, Thammasat students and Thalu Fah.

The crowd carried banners criticising the ruling Palang Pracharath Party for failing to honour its pre-poll promises.

Protesters began arriving at 10am and were met by police erecting metal barriers in front of Government House.

At 10.30am, police announced via loudspeaker that the rally was illegal as organisers had not obtained permission. They said protesters were also breaking the law by using a sound truck and warned reporters not to cross Chamai Maruchet Bridge towards Government House. The announcement was met with boos and shouts of “dictator’s servant” from protesters.

Protesters rally at Government House over rising living costsSomyot Pruksakasemsuk, a leader of the June 24 Democracy Group, said police were blocking people from exercising their constitutional rights to demand the government solve their grievances. He added that the peaceful rally’s purpose was to submit an open letter to the government.

Labour Network for People’s Rights leader Thanaporn Wichan accused the government of mismanagement that had damaged the country.

“No past government has ever caused the price of pork to rise to Bt300 per kilo,” she said. Thanaporn also accused the government of issuing measures to benefit major businesses and monopolies at the expense of struggling small-time farmers.

She said Palang Pracharath had failed to keep its election promise to increase the daily minimum wage to Bt425 and salaries of university graduates and vocational school graduates to Bt20,000 and Bt18,000 respectively.

Speaking on a sound truck, another protest leader said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had severely damaged the country during his eight-year rule following his 2014 coup.

He said the Prayut government had raised the minimum wage once by Bt30 but the price of pork had soared from around Bt100 to nearly Bt300. Meanwhile the minimum wage was still at Bt336 despite the coalition leader’s promise to hike it to Bt425.

At 12.15 pm, the Thalufah group handed a piglet to government representatives in a symbolic protest to demand action over the pork price.

Prayut pledges support for UN, Asean solution to Myanmar conflict

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has pledged to support United Nations efforts for a peaceful solution to conflict in neighbouring Myanmar.

Prayut pledges support for UN, Asean solution to Myanmar conflict

Prayut discussed the crisis in a meeting with the UN secretary-general’s special envoy on Myanmar, Noeleen Heyzer, at Government House on Monday.

The UN envoy called on the PM to support international efforts to help displaced people and to press Myanmar’s junta to commit to a five-point peace plan it agreed with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

The PM pledged Thailand’s support for the efforts but added that Myanmar’s problems are complicated and must be addressed step by step. said a government spokesman.

“The first step is to win trust from Myanmar’s leader,” Prayut said, adding that Thailand is closely monitoring the situation in the neighbouring country.

Prayut said efforts to solve the crisis must begin by getting all sides to halt violence and join peace talks while providing humanitarian aid to Myanmar’s people.

“Thailand is ready to provide help without discriminating against any group,” said the PM, adding that Thailand has a long record of providing humanitarian aid to the country.

He said the Thai government has prepared a humanitarian zone along the border, with measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

He added that fleeing Myanmar residents would only be sent back when they are ready and willing to return home. Reuters reported last month that Thai authorities sent back over 600 Myanmar refugees who had fled fighting in Karen state, though it was unclear how many returned voluntarily.

An estimated 284,000 Myanmar people have been displaced in fighting since the February 1 coup last year with around 22,000 refugees fleeing to India and Thailand.

Hezer voiced concern about violence in Myanmar, adding that it was in Thailand’s interest to push for peace in the country.

“The prime minister has an important role in preventing further deterioration of the crisis in Myanmar, where an implosion would bring further instability to an already volatile border area,” she said in a statement.

Veteran politicians Uttama Savanayana and Sontirat Sontijirawong will launch the “Sarng Anakot Thai” (Building Thailand’s Future) party on Wednesday at Centara Grand in CentralWorld.

In a bid to prevent the spread of Covid-19, all attendees of the press conference are required to prove they have been double jabbed and must take an ATK test before entering the venue. The conference kicks off at 12.30pm.

Former finance minister Uttama said in a Facebook post on Monday that he and Sontirat will reveal their party’s ideology, purpose and direction at the press conference. They will also introduce other party members.

“I have sensed that Thais are concerned about the country’s future due to the lack of direction and many problems have been rooted in our society for far too long,” he said. “If such concerns are allowed to continue unchecked, then one day all Thais will lose hope and the country will not be able to move towards prosperity.

“We have no other choice but to join hands to tackle the problems together. There’s no time for finger-pointing and we must not worsen existing problems,” he added.

“We must unite to make our country better so it can overcome all crises, be they economic, epidemic or social conflicts. We must build a better future for the next generation.”

Uttama and Sontirat are part of the “See Gumarn” (Four Boys) group, a name assigned to four high ranking members of the ruling Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) who quit the party after being removed from the party’s executive board in June 2020. Uttama was the party’s first leader, while Sontirat was its secretary-general.

The other two members of the group are former higher education, science and innovations minister Suvit Maesincee and ex-PM’s office minister Kobsak Pootrakul.

Deputy PM General Prawit Wongsuwan took over as PPRP leader after the four resigned.

PPRP party-list MPs Supol Fong-ngam and Santi Kiranan, who also quit the party, have reportedly joined Sarng Anakot Thai.

Pheu Thai slams Prayut govt over rising cost of living

The opposition Pheu Thai party on Monday accused Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his government of mismanagement that has led to a sharp rise in the cost of living and more hardship for low-income people.

Pheu Thai slams Prayut govt over rising cost of living

Pheu Thai spokeswoman Theerarat Samrejvanich told a press conference that the entire country was now suffering problems stemming from failures of Prayut’s government, including the rising cost of living, outbreaks of disease in animals and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Does Thailand still have a prime minister?” Theerarat asked. “Why is he working from home when the people are suffering? He is running the country by not running it and by covering up information, leading to disaster for the people and the country.”

She attacked Prayut over the rising price of pork, alleging it was caused by the government covering up an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF).

Had the government addressed the ASF spread from the beginning instead of concealing it, the pork market would not have been hit by shortages resulting in soaring prices, she said.

“The pork price has risen to the highest in Thailand’s history,” Theerarat said.

“Thais are having to turn to other meats and foods, prompting their prices to increase. All sides are suffering. Many people have no income and unemployment is rising. The most vulnerable people have not been taken care of.”

She said Pheu Thai and other opposition parties would submit a parliamentary motion this week demanding an urgent debate on the issues.

“The blame for expensive prices lies with the Prayut government,” Theerarat said, adding that Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit had failed in his task of controlling prices of consumer goods.

“Jurin attacked the Yingluck Shinawatra government over the rising cost of living in 2013 but now he is facing the same trouble,” the spokeswoman said.

Former finance minister Uttama Savanayana is launching a new political party, San Anakhod Thai Party (Thai Future Creator Party), on January 19, he posted on his personal Facebook on Monday.

Former finance minister to launch new political party on Jan 19

“Ican feel how we Thai people are concerned about the future of the country. I can’t see how they would go on with each other because we have a lot of problems. Many problems are deep-rooted in the country and for too long. And if we let such feelings to continue to linger on in everyone’s hearts, one day everyone will feel hopeless. By then, the country would not be able to continue on its path of progress,” Uttama said in the post.

“I believe that we do not want to live without hope. So we have no choice but to come together to deal with the existing problems. We do not have time to say who is right and who is wrong, but we must not add to the problems and the situation as it is. We need to join forces to do everything to make our country better through the crisis, whether it’s economic, epidemic, or society that is in conflict for Thailand to move on and create a better future for our children.”

There have been rumours for some time about the formation of a new political party led by Uttama and former commerce minister Sonthirat Sontijirawong, with 20 former MPs from various parties.

The focus of the new party is said to be to find solutions for the country’s economic challenges, and not serve as a reserve party for Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha.
