Thailand has an average of 1.03 million tonnes of mismanaged waste each year, according to the Thailand Development Research Institute.
To combat this alarming environmental threat, 12 leading organisations have teamed up to launch a project they hope will help Thailand become a zero-waste society.
The “Create a Green World” project hopes to tackle waste management along the lines of the bio-circular-green economy that deals with global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, hoping to create a sustainable environmentally friendly Thai society.
The project aims to recycle and upcycle waste to boost value and reduce the use of new resources by minimising waste problems that affect the environment and quality of life, and help create carbon credits.
The initiative has been piloted by Doi Kham with its network partners who are cooperating and supporting the recycling/upcycling of discarded UHT boxes, dialysis fluid bags and other waste materials for reuse.
The 12 organisations comprise Thailand Post, Thailand Post Distribution, Doi Kham Food Products, the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation, the National Health Security Office, the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation, Chulalongkorn University, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Lat Krabang, Tetra Pak, Major Cineplex Public Group, Best Polymer and Advance Match.
All 12 inked a MOU on June 1 to build a green world. The initiative will last until 2025.
Ampon Food, SIG Combibloc and the Office of the National Council for Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation have also voiced their readiness to join the much-needed project.
“His Majesty Rama IX had a very broad perspective on the environment,” Doi Kham president and chief executive Pipatpong Israsena Na Ayu said. “Therefore, we are concentrating mainly on the environment, asking what are we going to do for it.
“It is something we need to be aware of, that everyone in the country or everyone in the world needs to be aware of, otherwise this planet won’t become livable anymore in the future,” he pointed out.
“Do we want to pass on a dirty world to our children and grandchildren or do we want to give the people we love a world that is clean, a world that is livable,” Pipatpong asked.
“This [project] is the idea behind it all. Doi Kham is trying to move towards a bio-circular-green economy,” he added.
Rodenstock (Asia) Co., Ltd is a world leading manufacturer of lens and eyewear from Germany, established more than 145 years. It believes that everyone’s appearance is so unique and different, and so are all their eyes. Therefore, eye lens should be measured to be compatible with ones’ eyes.
Rodenstock has always developed an innovative technology for better progressive lens. The recent innovation is to manufacture biometric intelligent glass with AI which could process the wealthiest individual information ever. Rodenstock has collected personal data more than 500,000 individual biometric eye data. As a result of this, the accuracy of the biometric Intelligent glass is highly sharp with best view, comfortable looking, and vivid image at all distances.
Mr Siripong Tipmongkolsilpa, the Sales and Product Manager of Rodenstock elaborates that when you are reaching 40 years of age the eye lens gradually loses its elasticity, which is why it can no longer quickly differ between close-up and distance vision. A progressive lens is a lens that assists the actual eye lens and enables infinitely variable vision at all distances. A prerequisite for sharp vision with every glance and at all angles is the custom-fit of a progressive lens to the individual eye.
Up to now most lenses have been manufactured based on a traditional eye test, during which only four standard prescription values are determined for the calculation of the lens. When lenses are manufactured solely on the basis of these four values, standard values from the reduced eye model are used for the biometric data of the individual eye, which suit only 2% of eyes. The fact that each eye is unique is not taken into account – for example, the shape of the lens and cornea, which has an effect on how precise the lens is customised to the individual requirements of the eye.
Through the use of artificial intelligence and one of the largest biometric data pools, which includes 500,000 individual biometric eye measurements of other spectacle wearers, a new standard of lens calculation was created at Rodenstock. This new standard of lens calculation allows an AI-based biometric model of the eye to be created, even if only the traditional four standard refractive values of a spectacle wearer are available. This means that a significantly higher degree of biometric precision is possible for standard progressive lenses, which in turn now allows the manufacture of biometric lenses even without a previous measurement with the DNEye® scanner. Rodenstock calls the new AI-based lenses B.I.G. NORM™.
In addition to progressive lens with AI, Rodenstock has the best choice: Biometric lenses based on DNEye® technology. Rodenstock creates a paradigm shift in the calculation of progressive lenses by determining the unique shape and size of each eye exactly and taking this data into consideration in the manufacture.
The manufacture of lenses based on the exact eye measurement with the DNEye® scanner results in lenses which give the spectacle wearer pin-sharp vision, whereby Rodenstock determines the biometrics of the whole eye. This includes the length of the eye and several thousand data points – this is unique in the industry. Using these data records a precise, universal model is created for each individual eye. All relevant biometric data is incorporated directly into the lens production. On that basis a lens is then calculated that suits each individual person as perfectly as possible. This means that Rodenstock can determine the center of sharp vision for each individual eye. And spectacle wearers benefit from pin-sharp vision from every angle and with every glance, wherever they are looking.
The high degree of biometric precision of these lenses, based on the exact eye model of the wearer, gave Rodenstock inspiration for a new name. Rodenstock now calls these lenses: B.I.G. EXACT™.
Mr Siripong Tippayamongkolsilpa, sales and product manager of Rodenstock ,added that beside “While the precision and the advantages of the B.I.G. EXACT™ lenses – calculated on the basis of exact measurements of the DNEye® scanner – are still unrivalled, with the new B.I.G. NORM™ lenses Rodenstock can now achieve its goal of offering biometric lenses for everyone. Rodenstock starts a biometric revolution and also creates its B.I.G. VISION™ FOR ALL with standard refractive values.”
Global Compact Network Thailand (GCNT) together with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) and the UN Country Team Thailand are empowering sustainability leaders across Southeast Asia at “UNGC Leaders Summit 2022” with more than 10,000 multi-sector partners around the world. The event highlight 3 sustainability: Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Social Development including engaging with SMEs to take part in driving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into ASEAN and into the Asia-Pacific region.
The Global Compact Network Association of Thailand (GCNT), together with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) and the UN Country Team Thailand, co-hosted the “UNGC Leaders Summit 2022: Sustainability in ASEAN” to drive sustainability on the global stage Sustainability leaders from business, civil society, Government, Global Compact Local Networks Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei. This year’s #LeadersSummit, inspired and catalyzed local and regional solutions for advancing policies that not only drive economic growth but accelerate progress towards the objectives of Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement in the ASEAN region with live broadcasts from Thailand around the world with over 10,000 attendees.
“The ESCAP Sustainable Business Network (ESBN), consisting of representatives of the private sector from the Asia-Pacific region, has adopted the Asia Pacific Green Deal for Business Declaration as a roadmap for companies to take the lead on climate action. ESBN, through this Green Deal, will lead private sector sustainability efforts to accelerate a green transformation in the region” said the Under-Secretary-General of United Nations and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), H.E. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana in her opening remark.
Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General and CEO of the UN Global Compact, spoke about the challenges facing the world today: “Today the world is still struggling to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic – a battle that will only be won when vaccines reach everyone – and remedy the disruptions it has set off in the global economy. Earlier this year, the IPCC published its gloomiest report yet, warning that time is no longer on our side to prevent a climate change catastrophe. And on top of these disasters, the war in Ukraine is posing a direct systemic and persisting threat to global security on three fronts: food, energy and human. In times such as these, business is called upon to act. A reason for optimism is that we are seeing businesses taking action; providing solutions; forming coalitions of the willing. Nevertheless there is still more that needs to be done, particularly with regards to mobilizing the financing and investments required for delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals”
Mr Noppadol Dej-Udom, Chief Sustainability Officer of Chareon Pokphand Group and Secretary General, Global Compact Network Thailand announced that “The UN Global Compact was set up to direct the power of business as a force for good. It started with the recognition that businesses have contributed significantly to create and intensify most of the world’s major problems: climate change, biodiversity loss, air and water pollution, inequality, and violation of human rights.
At the same time, businesses possess the resources and capabilities to help solve these problems. As business leaders, we must shoulder the responsibility of not only addressing our own negative impacts on environment and society – or the ‘do no harm’ approach, but also go further to utilize our energy and expertise to actively help solve those problems.”
Ms Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, Secretary-General of Security and Exchange Commission Thailand said that “As the Thai capital market regulator, SEC is committed to promoting the development of sustainable investment climate and responsible investment business in line with the UN SDGs. In so doing, we aim to enhance competitiveness, ensure inclusiveness, and strengthen trust and confidence in the Thai capital market. We also seek to increase the knowledge and the sense of ownership of the SDGs with support from the government, businesses, and international organizations. We are driving all our efforts to build the capital market as a key engine for restructuring and digitizing the Thai economy. We believe our continuing efforts will help the economy adapt to the changing landscape and be recognized in the international arena.”
The meeting beginning with the SDGs Ambition session discussing the importance and value of defining and integrating SDGs through supply chain operations. Especially in the past two years, due to the coronavirus situation, plans to achieve net zero have required technology, investment, collaboration, and commitment from top management. In other words, the cost of not initiating anything. The value is higher than the adjustment of each industry. which is unique from different problems.
Gloyta Nathalang, Executive Vice President, Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited, one of the Thai business leaders who shared the vision and goals of the organization in this session said that it was a great opportunity to exchange experiences and learn about the Sustainable Development Goals with business leaders from other countries in the ASEAN region. Everyone agreed that there must be a clear, achievable goal, giving importance and understanding to this matter from the level of directors, executives, to employees and business stakeholders. UNGC has the SDG Ambition Guide and SDG Tools as tools that make it easier to set clear goals and follow up. Moreover, The cooperation with various partners is also important that the Bangchak Group has set targets for carbon neutrality in 2030 and net zero in 2050, which are unable to achieve these goals on their own. Therefore, the principle of “Leading Inclusively” is applied to lead all stakeholders to achieve this goal together.
The next session was SMEs ASEAN which SMEs leaders discussed the integration of sustainability in SMEs’ operations to create their contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals and unlock market opportunities. It starts with understanding and motivational benefits along with enhancing knowledge and concrete examples, for example, using customer pain points as ideas to develop possible solutions to reach the new generation. And finally, there must be a network or ecosystem, which will allow the exchange of knowledge between each other and easy to cooperate which creates new opportunities business and enable sustainable growth.
The afternoon session started with three key sustainability agendas: Climate emergency & Biodiversity and social development that started with a discussion on how businesses are dealing with climate change and preserving biodiversity that are like two sides of the same crisis and that it is therefore important that these crises are addressed in an integrated manner. The meeting ended with the issue of Social Sustainability. It discusses trends in social investment which will see businesses increase their investment and commitment to social sustainability issues like never before. to create thriving communities and ecosystems.
Mr Peerapong Krinchai, Executive Vice President, Corporate Engineering, CPF Thailand shared that CPF is moving towards cost-effective rotation of natural resources throughout the value chain and zero greenhouse gas emissions. by developing standards for sustainable sourcing of raw materials throughout the supply chain It has set a goal that by 2030, the procurement of 100% of key agricultural raw materials must be traceable and come from areas that do not deforestation and biodiversity. In addition, CPF has also upgraded its data management to connect to the manufacturing process with Blockchain technology to make traceability more accurate and faster.
Mrs Gita Sabharwal the UN Resident Coordinator in Thailand has closed the meeting saying The private sector will play an important role in supporting the country’s aspirations under the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) over the next five years. on climate change and promote biodiversity.
UNGC Leaders Summit 2022 : sustainability in ASEAN has underscored how the ASEAN region has been a torch-bearer in the wider Asia-Pacific region in ‘building back better, together.

Mutual funds have always been highly popular among old and new investors and yet still show a promising trend of future expansion. One might wonder how come mutual funds can still maintain their popularity nowadays despite more financial tools and investment options have been available.
Here are some of the benefits that mutual funds have which attract investors seeking to maximize their profits.
1. Small capital required Mutual funds nowadays require smaller minimum investment capital compared to other investment options, which means anyone can start investing regardless of their financial status.
2. Variety of investment options Mutual funds offer several financial products that suit the varied needs of investors. You can choose from a wide range of options such as fixed-income funds, technology funds, gold funds, health technology funds, clean energy funds, and more. Investors can choose the funds in the sector that they are interested in, or distribute their capital across several funds to achieve the profit target.
3. High cash flow Mutual funds have a shorter period for redemption of unit trust, which allows investors to faster regain their capital for future investment and therefore maintain a high cash flow.
4. Double the profits with tax benefits Mutual funds such as SSF (Super Saving Fund) and RMF (Retirement Mutual Fund) grant investors tax deduction benefits provided that they meet the investment requirement. SSF requires about 10 years of continued investment while RMF investors must hold the unit trust until they are 55 years old before they can be sold. Investors therefore are advised to study the criteria and requirements of each fund carefully.
5. Equally supervised by experts No matter how small you invest, every mutual fund will be professionally managed by ‘Fund Managers’ who are well-versed in asset management while your profit will be handled by ‘Trustees’ who work to ensure the funds’ transparency and maximum profits for investors. This has made mutual funds a hassle-free investment whereas investors have the freedom to focus on their work or things they love.
6. Diversified investments As mutual funds pool capital from several investors, they will need to distribute the investments across different assets to maximize the profits and minimize the risks throughout the investment period, depending on each funds policy. This helps investors save time in analyzing different assets as well as in dealing with organizations that they need to invest in.
7. DCA friendly Mutual funds are suitable for Dollar Cost Average (DCA) approach, which is a strategy to invest regularly and continually at equal amounts in long term. Since mutual funds require a small starting investment, supervised by professionals, and have diversified investment, investors can therefore rest assured that they can stay on track under the DCA approach until they achieve the desired target.
