The Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) has identified cybersecurity services as one of the mega trends that will create huge social and digital disruption across industries. According to the TDRI, such mega trend will gain traction post-pandemic and affect businesses and investments in many industries with Thailand expected to be a major consumer of cybersecurity services.

TTA’s Subsidiary V Ventures Acquires a 10% Stake in Cloudsec Asia To Benefit from Mega Trend in Cybersecurity Services

Thoresen Thai Agencies Public Company Limited (TTA), a leading strategic investment company, has expanded its investment portfolio into the cybersecurity technology business. V Ventures Technologies Company Limited (VVT), a majority owned subsidiary of TTA, has recently entered into an agreement to acquire a 10% stake in Cloudsec Asia Company Limited (Cloudsec Asia), a provider of cybersecurity services.

According to Stastica, the global cybersecurity market size is forecasted to be US$239 billion in 2022 and expected to continually grow to US$345 billion over the next few years. Thai domestic investment will be a driving force for development of infrastructure for cyber security in Thailand which will support the growth of the country’s digital assets and block chain technology.

Cloudsec Asia is a leading comprehensive cybersecurity service provider determined to make cybersecurity become a fundamental utility for organizations and people. Cloudsec Asia provides comprehensive cybersecurity services, including Public Cloud or Private Cloud, and offers a one-stop-shop solution through delivery of three core areas of service offerings: Cloud Security Solutions, Manage Detection and Response and Cyber Security Services.

Mr. Chalermchai Mahagitsiri, Chief Executive Officer of V Ventures Technologies Company Limited said, “We are confident that cybersecurity must be the top priority for new spending for organizations in order to have adequate data breach insurance, particularly cloud security data breaches, due to an increasing use of non-PC devices connected to the internal business system and saving all of work and documents to the cloud. Therefore, information rights management (IRM) which is a technology for protecting sensitive or critical information will be in the strong demand. Factors driving this demand include the emergence of new digital products and services, related health and safety applications and risks from third parties data breaches such as customer data breaches or supply chain attacks, etc.

“The main purpose to invest in Cloudsec Asia is to expand the potential for TTA’s business operation in the segment of cybersecurity. We expected that the investment has potential to generate good returns. Moreover, we believe that with high technology capabilities and integrated cybersecurity solutions, Cloudsec Asia can meet requirements of customers in all industries from financial business, banking, insurance business, real estate business to the retail business and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand and ASEAN.”

Mr. Krishnayos Puranasamriddhi, the Chief Executive Officer of Cloudsec Asia, said: “Cloudsec Asia is a company that combines all three aspects of cybersecurity dimensions created as a different service which is more synergistic and inclusive from end-to-end than just one of the functions on a standalone basis. We can adjust our services according to customers’ requirements. Whether it is just detection or protection, it can be made to order with high expertise and technology. We can design a wide range of services to suit public and private sectors of all sizes, from small SMEs to public companies. Cloudsec Asia is also planning to expand its cybersecurity business to CLMV countries as cybersecurity services become increasingly important as the digital world becomes closer and more connected to people than ever before.

“Cloudsec Asia today has achieved a market valuation of close to THB 1 billion and we are in the process of executing additional strategic initiatives expected to grow Cloudsec Asia’s market valuation to become in excess of THB 5 billion by 2023.”

Hidden stories of prisoners’ rehabilitation uncovered in ‘Beauty of Opportunities’

The “Beauty of Opportunities” exhibition reflected TIJ’s commitment to communicating the problem through artists’ and designers’ perspectives, experiences, and stories about prisoners.

Hidden stories of prisoners’ rehabilitation uncovered in ‘Beauty of Opportunities’

Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ) has shone a rare light on rehabilitation of prisoners in Thai jails, telling their stories in “Beauty of Opportunities”. The December 22-26 exhibition marked the 11th anniversary of the UN Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-custodial Measures for Women Offenders or the “Bangkok Rules”.

Held at the Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park, it share stories of social-reintegration opportunities handed to people who made a mistake.

Opportunities for a new life

TIJ said opportunities” are the most important things to prisoners, especially those who are trying to reintegrate into society as they can only start a new and quality life if given chances to do so.

Thailand suffers a high reoffending rate because the public often overlooks the need to give occupational opportunities to former prisoners. Reoffending causes overcrowding in prisons and also deprives Thailand of human resources from ex-convicts.

TIJ has collaborated with allies to drive former prisoners’ sustainable social reintegration for the past 11 years, said its executive director Phiset Sa-ardyen.

These efforts contributed to the endorsement of the Bangkok Rules by the UN in 2010, which set an international standard for the treatment of women prisoners.

The “Beauty of Opportunities” exhibition reflected TIJ’s commitment to communicating the problem through artists’ and designers’ perspectives, experiences, and stories about prisoners. The exhibition celebrates the value, potential, freedom, and equality of people who took a wrong move in the past and the importance of giving them opportunities.

‘Opportunities’ in the Eyes of Artists

Beautiful Opportunities

Noppol Chuklin , CEO of Retail Business SolutionNoppol Chuklin , CEO of Retail Business Solution, was inspired to help prisoners after his enrolment into the TIJ Executive Programme on the Rule of Law and Development (RoLD Programme) Class 1.

Under his initiative, prisoners nearing their release date are brought out of jail to work as operators at metal-welding factories. Several former prisoners have also been recruited to his company. He also has set up a call centre where prisoners make phone calls and provide services.

Noppol has found that prisons generally do not know about prisoners’ backgrounds because of restrictions of regulations and budgets. Therefore, prisons are not able to develop prisoners’ potential efficiently. Instead most prisoners face a stark choice: “Will they kill time or get killed by time?”

Noppol has joined the exhibition as a photographer whose photos show how time is so different to prisoners and people living outside.

“I hope these photos will make people see where the beauty of opportunities lies. It’s about time management. Be happy in the present. Be patient. And appreciate the more time one has for oneself,” Noppol explained.

Hidden stories of prisoners’ rehabilitation uncovered in ‘Beauty of Opportunities’

Call me by my name

The first time Charinee “LungPle” Mateekul walked into jail, she was scared. Documentaries she had watched blurred prisoners’ faces to hide their identity. Once she was inside jail, she found that some inmates preferred to focus on faces because it was a way of recognising their existence and value. It led her to launch the “Call Me by My Name” project – a drawing workshop for inmates at Ratchaburi Prison. The time flies by fast for them during the three-hour workshop. Participants get opportunities to contact inmates from other zones and draw their portraits. The workshop provides the best drawing paper and equipment, enabling them to free their imagination.

Each portrait is unique and all of them exude hopes and dreams. Some are inspired by inmates’ dreams to become medics, and picture medical gowns. Others show the subject with different hair colours – prison rules prohibit hair dyeing. Some participants are just happy to hold a pencil for the first time in years.

“It must be fun for workshop participants, after being released from jail, to stroll around an exhibition with other visitors and look at their portraits without anyone knowing that the subjects are them. No one has to be afraid. Prisoners will one day return to society and live normal lives just like others,” Charinee said.

Hourglass

Norarat “Ab” Thawin-anan is a street artist. He is interested in social issues such as violence against children and human trafficking. As his thoughts deepened and his ideas got sharper, he recognised he could help create a better society through the arts.

“I am not a pop-art type. My pieces are rooted in reality, with characters telling of the justice and injustice they have encountered,” Norarat explained.

Norarat’s “Hourglass” painting in “Beauty of Opportunities” draws inspiration from the hopes and dreams expressed in inmates’ letters.

“They are waiting for their freedom. That’s my theme. I got this idea from my observations when visiting a prison many years ago and also from prisoners’ letters. My painting’s mood concerns remaining love and time,” Noparat said with a yearning tone in his voice.

The exhibition showcased works:

• “Beautiful Opportunities” photo essay by Noppol Chuklin

• “Call Me by My Name” acrylic painting by Charinee Mateekul

• “Embracing Opportunities” illustrations by Anuchit Khamnoi, owner of Facebook Page: “Kiwtum”

• “Hourglass” (street-art) painting by “Abi” or Norarat Thawin-anan

• “Craft Opportunities” items by inmates from the Thon Buri Remand Prison’s 10 Traditional Arts Project, which was conducted by Piroon Sriiamsaard

• “Lifetime Proofs of Former Convicts’ Social Reintegration” photo essay by PPTV documentary photographer Somsak Netthong

• “Places of opportunities” project by architecture students under the supervision of Asst Prof Rittirong Chutapruttikorn, Dean of the School of Architecture, Bangkok University.

Thailand’s largest food business has announced it will stop using coal for its operations in the country this year, and transition towards greener and sustainable energy.
Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc (CP Foods) said the shift from coal to renewables will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
The “CPF Coal Free 2022” initiative will switch from coal to sources such as biomass energy from waste including wood chips, sawdust and corncobs, said a CP Foods press release.
All 12 of the company’s livestock feed mills have stopped using coal, while two aqua-feed mills and a duck-fowl feather processing plant will phase out coal by the fourth quarter, it added.

Ajinomoto Group announced it is rolling out the “world’s first nutrient profiling system” to scientifically assess the nutritional value of cooked dishes.

Ajinomoto introduces nutrient profiling menu system in bid to improve consumers’ health

The Nutrient Profiling System for Menus (ANPS-M) was presented at a recent annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Public Health.

The group also plans to promote the development and implementation of ANPS-M overseas, such as in Asean, including Thailand, and Latin America as a system that accommodates the local food culture of each country and region.

As interest in improving nutrition has grown around the world, global food companies have introduced nutrient profiling systems as methods for assessing the amount of nutrients contained in food on a scientific basis in order to express its nutritional quality in an easy-to-understand manner.

The newly developed ANPS-M addresses that issue and makes it possible to assess the nutritional values of dishes prepared with seasoning, including providing clarity on nutritional issues, thereby informing how to improve nutrition by supporting a reduction of salt and fat and optimising protein and vegetable intake without compromising on taste, Ajinomoto said in a press release.

Furthermore, the group will utilise this system to help consumers eat nutritionally well-balanced meals, it said.

“Ajinomoto will continue contributing to comfortable lifestyles and extending healthy life expectancies for people around the world as it strives to become a company that helps resolve food and health issues, which reflect our core business as we adhere to the principle of ‘Ajinomoto Group Creating Shared Values’,” it added.

CP Foods vows sustainable sourcing to fight deforestation

Charoen Pokphand Foods Pcl (CP Foods) has pledged to guard against deforestation with responsible sourcing of agricultural raw materials from farmers and suppliers, so as to protect biodiversity and natural resources of Thailand and countries where the company operates.

Biodiversity and forest sustainability are keys to food security of people across the world. The company is committed to protecting biodiversity and achieve zero deforestation, Wuthichai Sithipreedanant, senior vice president for corporate social responsibility and sustainable development of CP Foods, said. It has developed a transparent traceability system to make sure that every CP Foods business unit in Thailand acquires ingredients from a sustainable source.

CP Foods has expanded this guideline to its overseas businesses since 2021, he added.

He said multiple efforts have been made to ensure that everyone in the company’s supply chain realises the importance of biodiversity and natural resources to food business, adding the company will host training courses to raise awareness on biodiversity among its suppliers this year.

“The purpose is to preserve our oceans and forests in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” Wuttichai said.

CP Foods vows sustainable sourcing to fight deforestationHe said the company also has developed and implemented a biodiversity management plan. Meanwhile supplier audits are carried out to ensure that the ingredient is not sourced from deforested areas. This includes “Self-Sufficient Farmers, Sustainable Corn” projects that buy raw materials only from plantation fields with legal land deeds and discourage farmers from burning the stubble.

CP Foods vows sustainable sourcing to fight deforestationWuthichai added that under the CPF 2030 Sustainability in Action plan, the company continues to conserve, protect, and restore watershed forests and mangrove forests via projects such as the second phase of the CPF Rak Nives at Phraya Doen Thong, Mountain Project, Lopburi province, and The CPF Grow-Share-Protect Mangrove Forestation Project in Rayong, Samut Sakhon and Trat provinces. These two projects, covering 14,000 rai (2,240 hectares), aim to make a positive impact on the environment, society and the economy in addition to reducing the impact of climate change, he said.
