Suntory with National Blood Centre launch the “BRAND’S Young Blood”
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2022
Now in its 23rd year, the campaign – organized under the “Give Blood…Give Lives” concept – invites the new generation, especially university students to give the “gift of giving” by becoming new blood donors or making blood donations once every three months.
Other activities include short songwriting, singing, lip-syncing and dancing contests as well as the “TikTok Challenge” to win royal trophies, scholarships and other prizes. With roadshows and mobile blood donation centres to be located at academic institutes nationwide, the campaign expects to receive 90,000 donated blood units from across the country.
Associate Professor Dootchai Chaiwanichsiri, M.D. The Director of the National Blood Centre said “The main mission of the National Blood Centre, the Thai Red Cross Society in 2023 is to ensure the national blood supply is sufficient and of the best quality. And each year the Blood Centre expects to receive an estimated 2.5 million units of donated blood in response to the demand which rises by 8-10% annually,”.
Currently, Thailand still sees an unpredictable frequency of public blood donations and sometimes blood supply shortages such as during the Covid-19 pandemic when donations plunge significantly.
Therefore, it is important for the National Blood Centre to create a network of alliances to raise awareness and send messages across to encourage more people to make blood donations which bring about an adequate blood supply and sufficient blood reserve in case of emergency or other unavoidable circumstances where blood is urgently required for at least two to five days.
“Potential and sustainable donors – our main target group – are university students across Thailand as they still have many years to make blood donations. The campaign aims to raise awareness and understanding among Thai youth that blood donations are important and require mutual responsibility and that they can give the “gift of giving” by becoming new blood donors or regular donors who make blood donations once every three months. Their donated blood will become the national blood supply to be used in case of emergency. The campaign also encourages them to be socially responsible and to make voluntary blood donations without expecting anything in return. This year, the National Blood Centre expects to receive 90,000 donated blood units nationwide,” Dootchai said.
Mathuvalee Stithyudhakarn, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Affairs, Suntory Beverage & Food Thailand and Indochina
Mathuvalee Stithyudhakarn, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Affairs, Suntory Beverage & Food Thailand and Indochina said “Under ‘Giving Back to Society’ corporate value, Suntory organizes various activities to give back to the society both in terms of the environment as well as people’s health and wellbeing. The company, therefore, initiated the “BRAND’S Young Blood” campaign in collaboration with the National Blood Centre, the Thai Red Cross Society.”
In 2020-2021, the Blood Centre received 68,701 donated blood units under the campaign, a reflection of the power of giving among students and youth who truly had the volunteer spirit. Furthermore, Suntory also organized the BRAND’S Young Blood Game Creator contest under the topic of BRAND’S Young Blood Hero where participants were encouraged to create computer games, and present their concepts alongside audio and visual communication to create public awareness with regard to blood donations and the power of giving. The team I am Alone from Rangsit University won the top award from the computer game competition.”
Now in its 23rd edition, the BRAND’S Young Blood 2023 campaign also sends mobile blood donation units to various academic institutes and organizes roadshow activities to raise national awareness and to provide a space for university students to shine and be part of the campaign. Major activities include:
1. Short songwriting contest on the topic of “Give Blood…Give Lives”: University students aged 17-22 years old can use this opportunity to show off their songwriting skills to compose a song encouraging the young generation to make blood donations and to create the power of giving. The winner shall receive a trophy from HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, a certificate and a scholarship worth 30,000 baht as well as BRAND’S Essence of Chicken for one-year consumption. Entries can be self-submitted or sent by mail from 5 January to 31 March 2023. The winner will be announced on 31 May 2023.

Bangkok’s annual light and digital art festival “Awakening Bangkok 2022” returns for its 5th edition to the Charoenkrung-Talad Noi neighborhood, aims to promote nighttime economy, social and economic sustainability, and festival tourism
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2022
Held on the theme “Endless Tomorrow”, the lighting installation festival inspires and revives the economy in Charoenkrung-Talad Noi after sunset, attracting local and international tourists and creating a lively atmosphere during the festive season.
Awakening Bangkok’s organizer Time Out Bangkok together with its partners the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), Creative Economy Agency (CEA), Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Diageo Moet Hennessy (Thailand), and BGC Glass Studio have created the lighting installation festival Awakening Bangkok 2022 on the theme “Endless Tomorrow” to offers new perspectives to the historically charming Charoenkrung and Talad Noi area now that the COVID-19 pandemic has settled. The event aims at inspiring people about how to create a sustainable future for the present and next generations.
Mr. Pongsiri Hetrakul, managing director of Time Out Bangkok and Festival Director of Awakening Bangkok, said: “This is the 5th year of the festival and, after being forced by the pandemic to postpone the 2021 festival to March 2022, we are delighted to be able to get back to our same schedule at year-end season. We’ve collaborated with our partners to deliver new and memorable experiences to everyone during the 10-day festival that runs from 16 to 25 December 2022. We’re ready to elevate Awakening Bangkok to a next level, by making it part of the international tourism calendar as well as a destination for tourists.
“The fact that we’ve been able to organize the event for five consecutive years says a lot about the success of Awakening Bangkok. This has proved that a collaboration between the government and private sector is ideal for when you’d push things forward for universal benefits, including the efforts to bring out the national creative force and promote night-time economy, which are the keys that will secure Charoenkrung’s brighter future. We have received good feedback from artists, designers and visitors who attended the past events. The festival helps to bond and enliven the community, inspire creative forces, and helps take Bangkok to a global festival tourism calendar.”
The continuous collaboration with TAT, TCEB, CEA and the BMA reflects the collective goal to make Awakening Bangkok one of the main festivals on Thailand’s and regional tourism calendar. The festival is currently recognized as one of the “Colorful Bangkok” events, BMA’s three-month campaign that aims to revitalize the city through multi-disciplinary cultural events between November 2022 and January 2023. The plan is to make Bangkok a cultural metropolis and a major festival tourism destination that will help sustain the city’s social and economic development.
Mr. Sanon Wangsrangboon, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, said that the year-end festivals are all about lighting, music and art. These festivals, which were and will be held in various places across the city, offer people the chance to end the year with memorable moments and welcome the New Year in high spirit. To catch up with the festive spirits and to align with Governor Chadchart Sittipunt’s year-round city festivals, BMA, in partnership with various stakeholders, has initiated “Colorful Bangkok” festive campaign, which spans 3 months from November 2022 to January 2023, and is divided into 3 themes: Creative Arts Festivals in November, Light Festivals in December and Music Festivals in January, for residents and tourists alike to enjoy. These events will help boost the local economy and public spending.
“Awakening Bangkok is recognized as one of the “The Festival of Lights” events in the BMA’s “Colorful Bangkok 2022” calendar. It symbolizes the opening of a space and illuminating the city and bringing it back to life,” Mr. Sanon ended.
Kittipong Prapattong, Executive Director Central Region of Tourism Authority of Thaiand (TAT), added: “The trend of foreign tourists traveling to Thailand is on a steady rise now that the COVID situation has eased. This is particularly evident during the year-end celebrations as holidaymakers around the world are looking for destinations where they can enjoy the long weekend. The government’s policy to open the country for tourists and the cooperation with the private sector in organizing festivals at various destinations across the country help attract tourists, making Thailand one of the world’s top destinations.
“Awakening Bangkok 2022 is a collaboration between the public and private sectors to create one of the greatest events of the year. Besides being spectacular, it also celebrates the opening of the country and the year-end tourism season excites both locals and visitors. We believe that such a “colorful” event will invigorate the tourism trend now that the pandemic has been largely resolved,” Mr. Kuttipong added.
Mrs. Nichapa Yoswee, Senior Vice President – Business, of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), said: “TCEB sees the opportunity to develop the city and community with what is called “Festival Economy” as a way to promote a city’s sustainable development. The tourism trends and behaviors among the younger generation have changed to those of more choice and experience-driven, and festival creators will need to response to these changes. These groups of travelers have high purchasing power, so the travel volume of such groups will have both direct and positive impacts and indirectly link to the economy of the host city and its surrounding communities.
At the heart of Awakening Bangkok is the promotion of all aspects of sustainability, a common goal of all partners including the main sponsor “Johnnie Walker” that has supported the event for three consecutive years.
Ms. Jarinee Wongkhamthong, Diageo Moet Hennessy (Thailand) Co.’s marketing director, said: “The collaboration of all sectors, public and private, is required if we are to co-create a sustainable economic value. Johnnie Walker sees the importance of supporting Thai artists and designers who are capable of extending their creative work and creating added values. This is in line with Diageo’s long-term sustainability goal SOCIETY2030: SPIRIT OF PROGRESS through which we strive to be one of the best-performing and most trusted consumer companies, and the brand’s KEEP WALKING philosophy that inspires and creates new experiences that keep people moving forward.
“This year, Johnnie Walker returns under the concept. “No matter what, just move on and live your life”, which underlines two main issues to the new generation, diversity acceptance and creating sustainability in all dimensions. This message is reflected through various works exhibited at the event and the two bars, which have been designed in collaboration with famous artists. In addition, this concept is conveyed through new flavors of four special drink recipes inspired by nature, created in collaboration with WASTELAND, a drinking community of environmentalists. And most importantly, we continue to support responsible drinking by reinforcing messages and activities included in the work.”
Mr. Pongsiri concluded that: “Aimed at promoting the city’s identity, each year Awakening Bangkok creates an event that specifically reflects each idea while also drawing inspiration from the rich history. The event signals the possibility of new ideas and creation through the opening of the space and the collaboration of the people.
“Awakening Bangkok 2022 takes place at a time when we are still searching for answers, when we are still exploring life’s many possibilities. We wish for conversations – and inspiration – on how to create a better tomorrow…one that will last forever. A tomorrow that is endless. The event reflects such a concept through the participation of new generation artists such as COTH, 27 June, and Alt+r .
“This year is special as we’ve created 2 routes for 2 sub-themes. The southern Bangrak route focuses on “Sustainability” and the northern Talad Noi route on “Living Evidence” through new locations. Each route has its highlights. For example, the southern route’s highlighted works are at the Swan hotel, Marine Police Lodge and East-Asiatic Building, the latter of which is a century-old Venetian-style structure that used to house the multinational trading company of the same name. The northern route’s highlights include the Patina Bangkok, houses on the river bank and Phanu Rangsri Pier.”
In addition to light installations by amazing local artists, visitors can expect to see an international showcase for the first time, curated by a team from iLight Singapore, a similar light and digital arts festival in Singapore. The work is on display at Warehouse 30.
“This year, we have expanded our alliance to include the Hong Kong Economics and Trade office and Central Embassy and for the first time we have formed a partnership with favourite social media platform TikTok that has a goal of supporting Thai artists on its platform. There will be Tik Tok creators creating content at the event. Over the past years, Awakening Bangkok has been promoted via the English, Chinese and Japanese media to connect to the world. We believe that after the pandemic, Awakening Bangkok will be a top world destination for new experiences and cultural tourism.”
He added that: “Apart from promoting culture, Awakening Bangkok also plays a part in creating economic value. Awakening Bangkok 2021 held in March 2022 attracted more than 90,000 visitors over the 10 days despite being held while COVID-19 was still spreading, The event created an economic impact worth 115.64 million baht. We hope that this time around the festival will be even more welcome.
“We Believe that Awakening Bangkok will be a festival that helps boost the excitement of the city during this festive time of the year, especially among foreign tourists. A report by UNESCO clearly indicates the global growth of cultural tourists which is driven by the changing behavior of tourists. They want to learn more about the traditions of the local community, discover and visit historical sites and experience different cultures as well as learning and immersing themselves in cultural products and services in each locality,” Mr. Pongsiri said.
The 5th edition of Awakening Bangkok sees almost 40 lighting installations illuminating more than 20 locations, most of which are long-forgotten structures, in Charoenkrung-Talad Noi neighborhoods, from 16-25 December 2022.

We cherish them and their efforts in lifting the company up. Our success is theirs. Rolex Day-Date: The watch that defined a generation
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2022
A deep look into one of Rolex’s most iconic timepieces
Dubbed “the President’s Watch” by enthusiasts and the general media, the Rolex Day-Date has earned a rightful place among the most significant watches of our time.
And while most will recognize the Day-Date by its all-gold models, this invaluable timepiece represents so much more than just opulence, class, and sophistication.
So in celebration of the historic Rolex Day-Date, let’s explore its true origins, to find out what sets it apart from other models, and how it still remains timelessly iconic through almost seven decades since its first launch.
Innovating since 1956
Upon its first release in 1956—the same year that late rock icon and Rolex-owner Elvis Presley entered the United States’ music charts for the first time—the Rolex Day-Date immediately made history.
It was the first calendar wristwatch to indicate the day of the week, spelled out in full on its dial. This was considered by many as an incredible achievement of technical prowess at the time of its inception.
Furthermore, since its creation, the Day-Date has only been made from precious metals, which include 18-carat yellow, white, or Everose gold—Rolex’s very own version of rose gold—or 950 platinum.
One of the most prominent features of the timepiece is its ability to display the day of the week in the buyer’s language of choice. Buyers can currently select from 26 languages in total, including English, Dutch, Spanish, Moroccan, Indonesian, and Italian, to name a few.
Additionally, the Day-Date’s Oyster case means it is completely waterproof up to a depth of 100 meters, or 330 feet underwater. These features are found in both size varieties of the timepiece; As of 2020, the Day-Date only comes in 36 mm and 40 mm sizes.
Identity and Purpose
The Day-Date was born out of Rolex’s never-ending desire for more. In 1945, the watchmaker had just released the Datejust, which was its first watch to display the date at the 3 o’clock mark. And although it has become a legend in its own right, the Datejust is considered the predecessor of the Day-Date.
Rolex needed to innovate beyond the successes of the Datejust, with a more opulent, undeniably-luxurious option for its buyers. The birth of the Day-Date in the mid-50s was exactly that: the introduction of the brand’s new flagship model for years to come.
And it’s no surprise why this special timepiece has earned its reputation as “the President’s Watch,” as it has found its way around the wrists of the world’s most popular people. Let’s take a look at some of the most noteworthy individuals who are known for owning and wearing Day-Dates:
A true “President’s Watch”
The Day-Date has been proudly presented on the wrists of several US presidents, most notably Lyndon B. Johnson, who wore his model so frequently that it became synonymous with his time in the Oval Office. Other US presidents who have worn the Day-Date include Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan.
Outside of the Office, you’ll find the Day-Date on the wrists of globally-known athletes and celebrities. These include NBA icon Michael Jordan, the late James Gandolfini—also known as Tony Soprano from The Sopranos, and even the Dalai Lama himself.
Some might say the Rolex Day-Date is just one material object among an ocean of others that are simply flaunted among the rich.
But the invaluable timepiece’s popularity among the affluent and powerful comes as no coincidence. The Day-Date was purposely designed for leaders, and it is precisely because of Rolex’s ambition that it continues to be worn by them, over 60 years since it was first introduced to the public.
Time Midas is an official retailer of Rolex watches in Bangkok. For more information about available Day-Date models and more, visit its official website and buy Rolex Day-Date here.

BJC launched “Donjai”, a new retail business model to support Mom and Pop Store
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2022
BJC developed a retail business model based on “Sho Huay Shop” under the name “Donjai” to develop a POS system aiming to help small shop operators grow sustainably.
This alliance with both suppliers and commercial banks will be announced next year. The plan is to open up more 8,000 stores with a target of 30,000 more stores by 2027.
Mrs. Thapanee Techajareonvikul, Senior Executive Vice President of Chief Executive Officer of Berli Jucker Public Co., Ltd. or BJC said, “The concept of ‘Donjai’ originated from Khun Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi who wanted to participate in helping to develop local entrepreneurs to be able to generate long-term growth, developing Sho Huay stores to have a modern management system with information data base to drive sustainable sales. The soft launch project of Donjai began in early 2022 was well received. Approximately 1,000 grocery store operators have joined us and we will continue to launch official partnerships in early 2023.”
The 2023 goal is to increase the network to about 4,000 stores and to continue having a network of 30,000 stores nationwide by the year 2027. The stores joining the network are 1 of over 400,000 grocery stores nationwide. It is a small to large community retail store that sells directly to consumers, including wholesalers.
Mrs. Thapanee said, “Although there are many large operators under this model, I think it’s good to help develop entrepreneurs of grocery stores to have better management skills to bring sustainable growth in the long term. Grocery store operators are important in driving the grassroot economy. Their weaknesses in terms of management especially in stock management added a significant cost over the years and this the number of grocery stores nationwide did not increase much.”
Mrs. Thapanee added that the highlight of “Donjai” is that store operators can design their own investments and select products for sale without sharing profits with anyone even though the investment budget is not high. The store format is divided into 2 types: the first format, BJC uses Big C, Retail stores under BJC group to be a distributor of products for the convenience of ordering products and the second format is to adapt the POS system developed to suit and meet business needs of grocery stores. BJC will renovate the shops to have a modern style and attract more customers. The shop owners can choose the scope of improvement or decorate the shops by themselves according to the budget. No matter which types they choose, the project will charge a monthly expense as a system administration fee of about 4,000 baht that will be returned to the store based on the products purchased.
The distribution of products to the store will be under Big C network with over 200 branches to assist in the delivery. The operators can ensure that there will be no problem in managing the products that will be sold in the stores with this developed POS system showing clearly the information of which products sell best or what products are needed by the community to enable efficient management and to reduce costs and solve the problem of stock management.
“‘Donjai’ was born on the basis of our intention to come and help develop grocery stores to have good management. This will ultimately affect the sustainable growth of the whole system, not only BJC’s affiliated businesses like Big C whose customers are part of the grocery trader only but also, to grocery store operators and suppliers, product owners who join in the Eco system of Satisfaction to grow together in Thailand. We also look at developing projects Donjai in Vietnam by using the prototype from Thailand to develop further there. This will be another opportunity for Thai products to be able to expand and the opportunity to sell to Vietnamese people as well.” Mrs. Thapanee concluded.
