Traveloka continues to support sustained growth in the tourism sector while confirming its status as a leading online travel agency (OTA), with the aim to be the No-1 player in Southeast Asia, providing a wide range of travel needs in one platform.

Tee Chayakul, country manager of Traveloka Thailand, said on Tuesday: “Tourism revenue from Thai tourists travelling within Thailand has increased by 5.4 per cent to more than Bt930 billion out of Bt2 trillion in total tourism revenue, representing about 19-20 per cent of gross domestic product.

“A key factor driving growth in the OTA market is the unprecedented expansion of the middle class. This particular group values the opportunity and importance of travelling and isn’t worried about spending in exchange for more rewarding travel experiences. Additionally, the strong competition among airlines has played an important role in increasing the number of travellers.

“In Thailand, as the market continues its growth momentum, Traveloka has managed to become the country’s most downloaded flight and travel app after starting our operations just three years ago. Traveloka has experienced a 300-per-cent increase in growth based on the number of app downloads, or a threefold growth year-on-year, since our establishment in 2017.

“Given this jump in growth, Traveloka is well-positioned to become the No-1 online travel agency in Southeast Asia under the concept of #Enabling Mobility.”

Tee added that the company was now committed to maintaining its growth momentum by introducing a wide range of customer-centric products and services through three strategies: data innovation, content-centric and content marketing.

Traveloka, which is based in Indonesia, recently unveiled its latest feature, “Online Flight and Hotel Booking Packages”, offering users even more bundled convenience, together with “Airport Transport”, ensuring that trips include pick-up and drop-off services.

Famous around the world for its fresh and sometimes fiery flavours, Thailand’s street food is nevertheless in need of an upgrade, according to the Tourism Minister.

Weerasak Kowsurat said on Tuesday he would hold talks with the Public Health Ministry and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration on how to upgrade quality of dishes sold by street vendors in the capital.

He revealed plans to invite representatives of the two agencies to discuss how to ensure street foods are hygienic by offering advice on how to store ingredients and how to properly clean utensils.

Weerasak said his ministry would also work with municipalities in provinces to boost the quality of street food in other cities around the country.

He said the Tourism Ministry would launch an awareness campaign for tourists, explaining the characteristics of each dish to help them get the most out of eating on the street.

Citing the latest available figures, Weerasak said that as of 2016 there were 103,000 street food outlets in Thailand, constituting 69 per cent of all food shops in the country.

Runners can participate from any location, at any pace, on a treadmill or even in another country. There are two running distances to choose from – 5 km and 10.5 km, and the running period is from December 5-16, 2018.

Other than the benefits of staying active and healthy, virtual runners will also be taking part in a good cause by donating 100 baht to one of Oxfam’s projects that focuses on the alleviation of global poverty. The donation is already included in the 530 baht entry fee.

The results of your run must be recorded using a GPS app (Garmin Connect, Fitbit, Apple Health, S Health, Runkeeper, Strava, Endomondo, etc.), a health app (Garmin Connect, Fitbit, Apple Health, S Health, etc.) or by taking a photo or a screenshot of your race result from other running events that you will join during December 5-16, 2018. Singapore brings light to 2019

World November 15, 2018 10:00

The I Light Marina Bay light art festival returns to Singapore in the new year with a special i Light Singapore Bicentennial Edition running from January 28 to February 24 on the theme “Bridges of Time”.

This festival invites artists and festivalgoers to reflect on Singapore’s history and growth, as well as the connection with the world through sustainable light art installations. Festivalgoers can also look forward to a larger scale as it expands beyond Marina Bay to include the Civic District, Singapore River, and Raffles Terrace at Fort Canning.

“As one of the country’s signature events, the festival has been a platform that bridges people, culture, and opportunity through art and sustainability since its inception. This special bicentennial edition will see an intensified effort to bring communities together, as a reflection of how the historic Civic District and Singapore River first drew people from different parts of the world here centuries ago. With the larger festival footprint this edition, visitors can look forward to a whole new experience as the core of our city gets illuminated with sustainable light art installations,” said Lim Eng Hwee, chief executive officer of Urban Redevelopment Authority, the organiser of the festival

The festival has received the largest response ever to the call for artwork proposals. In just two months, there were 249 submissions from 36 countries, including Singapore.

One of the international light art installations to be featured is “City Gazing Singapore” by artists Mingus Vogel and Justus Bruns from Dutch design collective VOUW, who are participating for the first time. For this bicentennial edition, the artists have specially designed their installation to resemble the map of Singapore. To be anchored at The Lawn@Marina Bay, this dynamic artwork will have lights programmed to show how the city has grown over time. By hanging the installation over an open space, the artists hope to bring people from all walks of life beneath the artwork and turn their gaze upwards into the sky to view the illuminated outlines of the country.

The festival will welcome back Singaporean industrial designer Yun, who enthralled visitors with her light art installation “MoonFlower” at i Light Marina Bay 2017. Her new work titled “The Rainbow Connection” will feature islands of solar light modules in upcycled PET containers suspended in the air, which come alive as they sway in the wind. The use of solar powered lighting and upcycled materials for the artwork will help to remind visitors about the importance of sustainable development.

To further nurture and connect young artists with established ones from Singapore and the world through art and sustainability, the festival has launched the inaugural i Light Student Award this year. This provides opportunities for local and international tertiary students to come together in this sustainability cause, and present their very own sustainable light art installations. The festival received 48 submissions involving 115 students from nine countries including Singapore. Five student artworks – three winning and two merit entries – will be showcased at i Light Singapore  Bicentennial Edition.

More details on the lineup of the artworks at the festival will be announced at a later date.

Admission is free. Visit http://www.ilightsingapore.sg for more information.

Cabinet nod for tourism measures

THE CABINET yesterday agreed in principle to back measures to stimulate Thailand’s tourism in the early high season.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said the Cabinet gave the green light for the “Amazing Thailand Grand Sale Passport Privileges” from November 15 until January 15, 2019. The Tourism Authority of Thailand will join the Finance Ministry to set additional special areas at tourism areas or department stores for tourists to facilitate convenient and quick refund of value added tax.

Nattaporn Jatusripitak, adviser to the Prime Minister’s Office, said that the Cabinet agreed in principle to review and offer relaxation to three types of visas with a two-month pilot period. The starting period will be determined by the Tourism and Sports Ministry after its study of the proper period and details.

Firstly, a single-entry visa will be allowed to be changed into a double-entry visa with travel required within six months at the same fee of Bt1,000 per person. The Cabinet also approved a re-entry permit to facilitate foreign tourists who visit Thailand’s neighbouring countries to return to Thailand without making another request.

Most foreigners are independent tourists who prefer to take a trip to Thailand’s main destinations and its neighbouring countries such as Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. The re-entry permit for the rest of the visa will help promote tourism in Thailand and Asean and satisfy this group of foreign tourists

The Interior Ministry regulation will be amended to allow foreigners who receive a visa waiver for 30 days and travel into Thailand via land immigration checkpoints or land border checkpoints to enter the country with an unlimited number of visa waivers per calendar year.

Based on a database of the Tourism and Sports Ministry, nearly 5 million foreign tourists travelled through land-border checkpoints of Thailand in 2017, up 3 per cent from the previous year.

A number of foreigners stay and work in Thailand’s neighbouring countries.

These foreigners come from Singapore, Japan, France and the United States and like to travel to Thailand for shopping, leisure, sports competitions and healthcare.

These measures aim to maintain Thailand’s tourism revenue at not less than the targeted growth of 12 per cent in 2019, or about Bt2.28 trillion.

Bangkok’s Je Ngor worth many a visit

Bangkok’s Je Ngor worth many a visit

Travel log November 12, 2018 14:06

By Brian Martin for star2.com

A friend recommended a Thai-Chinese restaurant in Bangkok, figuring that as a frequent traveller to the Thai capital, I would be game for something fusion or at least, not traditionally Thai.

Boy, was I glad he told me about Je Ngor. That was four years ago, and I’ve been going back to the restaurant on Sukhumvit 20 every year since then. I’ve even become friends with the owner’s husband, Niphon Sajjavudh.

“Je Ngor is named after my wife’s best friend’s mother. She is a fabulous cook and when my wife and her buddy decided to open a restaurant, they used her recipes and named it after her,” Niphon told me.

The restaurant has two dishes listed in Bangkok’s Michelin Guide (as of 2017). The original branch in Bangkok’s Chinatown was opened 20 years ago, and there are now 11 branches in suburbs around Bangkok. The main one, however, is at Sukhumvit 20, opened 14 years ago.

So what makes this restaurant unique? Well, for starters, Mrs Je Ngor was of Teochew descent and the majority of dishes served here are Teochew. The other unique part of this eatery is the fact that 80 percent of its clientele are from Hong Kong!

“You’ve been here a number of times, haven’t you realised this?” Niphon chided me, adding that the rest of his customers are locals, mainland Chinese, Singaporeans and Malaysians.

For the purpose of this review, Niphon, a retired advertising bigwig, insisted we order the two Michelin recommended dishes – stir-fried shredded morning glory and stir-fried crab with black pepper.

First, the morning glory or better known as kangkung in Malaysia. All I can say is, wow! Actually, double wow! It was unlike any kangkung dish I have tried, yet relatively simple in its preparation. The chef, who’s been with the restaurant since its opening, uses only the stems of the morning glory and stir-fries it with lots of garlic. This was a great appetizer.

As for the crab, it was super fresh and had liberal doses of pepper – a little bit too much for my liking though.

Niphon explained that the restaurant gets all the seafood, meat and vegetables they use every morning. They do not keep anything for the next day. “We’ve been doing this since day one,” he said.

Our next dish was the deep-fried minced seafood spring ball. These are traditional Teochew-style dumplings that have minced pork and shrimp mixed together. We gave them the thumbs up for their crunchy exterior and juicy interior.

An interesting side to the dishes were… the sides! There were so many dips, we counted at least eight, sour, sweet, spicy, etc., and they all went with specific dishes or you could have them all on your table and try each one.

Just to prove that Je Ngor does traditional Thai too, the chef brought out the Som Tam or papaya salad. Yes, you can’t get more Thai than this. The difference was that the server asks you beforehand what level of spiciness you want for the dish: extra spicy, spicy or mild. This is to suit the foreign palate as Thais mostly like it super spicy.

Speaking of super spicy, Je Ngor’s tom yum is the bomb! A few mouthfuls of either the seafood or chicken variety, and you’ll find yourself sweating profusely. But if you really can’t take the spice, I would suggest you skip this soupy dish as the heat and various spices are really what keep it together.

To end the meal (before dessert), we had the fried rice. And it wasn’t just any fried rice. The chef uses salted and oven-baked salmon in the dish and this gives it that extra oomph. Despite being full, I greedily enjoyed a second bowl.

Finally, the dessert. The menu indicates a wide variety, but we chose the mango sticky rice (when in Thailand, right?) and the traditional Teochew ningow or fried taro sprinkled with fine powdery icing sugar. Both were excellent and a fitting end to a truly enjoyable meal.

Dinner for two at Je Ngor, with an appetiser, two mains and dessert plus drinks, should set you back 1,500 to 2,000 baht. It’s a bit pricey, but I would still recommend the restaurant for its ambience, service and quality of food.

Coming soon to your table: Amazing Echizen-gani

World November 12, 2018 16:03

By The Nation

The season for catching zuwai-gani – snow crabs – has returned to the Sea of Japan off Fukui Prefecture, continuing until March 20.

The most treasured variety, Echizen-gani (named for the locale of origin) is the only type served in the country’s imperial household.

The sweet and tender meat that makes snow crabs such a cherished delicacy is easily kept fresh when stored at a cool temperature.

The kanimiso (brown meat), tomalley (“crab fat”) from the intestinal cavity and even the ovaries are all delightful to eat but tend to lose freshness more quickly, but careful storage takes care of that too.

Echizen-gani is sold with yellow tags certifying its origin and authenticity. In September it became the first snow-crab variety registered with the protected geographical indication system (GI).

As the season gets underway every November 6, tourists from around the world flock to Fukui to enjoy Echizen-gani, dubbed “the king of delicious winter food”.
