US boosts Thailand’s ability to fight wildlife crimes

Thailand’s efforts to combat environmental destruction, including the regional trade in wildlife, was given a boost by an international conference on Friday.

US boosts Thailand’s ability to fight wildlife crimes

The US-sponsored Asia-Pacific Judicial Symposium on Best Practices in Environmental Courts and Adjudication, held online from June 17-18, brought together dozens of global judicial leaders and experts to advance environmental law in the region. It comes after USAID reported a surge in illegal wildlife trade in Southeast Asia and China, highlighted by seizures of 155,795 kilos of pangolin products and 552kg of tiger products in 2019 – a small fraction of the true picture.

Thailand is currently drafting its own rules of procedure for environmental cases, which the US says will now be informed by international best practices following the Judicial Symposium. The event promoted Thailand’s regional judicial leadership in Asean and advanced Thailand’s own environment courts agenda, it added.

“The United States government remains fully committed to its partnership with regional and national leadership across Asean to deter wildlife crime, conserve biodiversity, and uphold the rule of law for the regional stability that underpins a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said Michael Heath, Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Thailand.

The event saw the Thai Supreme Court and counterparts from the US, Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines discuss best practices in environmental courts and adjudication, including handling environment crimes such as illegal wildlife trafficking.

The symposium was billed as the culmination of a two-year cooperative effort between USAID Wildlife Asia, the Thai Supreme Court, and other partners like UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to support the Thai judiciary in advancing its own environment courts initiative.

“We are confronted by a triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. More than ever, the judiciary must be innovative and bold when handling environmental cases. Judges should endeavour to promote environmental rights with their decisions to help address this triple crisis and ensure a sustainable future for the people they serve.” said Isabelle Louis, UNEP’s deputy regional director for Asia and the Pacific.

Google to open first retail store steps away from Apple in NYC #SootinClaimon.Com

Google to open first retail store steps away from Apple in NYC

Google will open its first retail store in New York City, highlighting the internet giants effort to promote its consumer hardware devices.

Google to open first retail store steps away from Apple in NYC

The store, in Manhattan’s trendy Chelsea neighborhood, will open to the public Thursday, the Mountain View, California-based company said Wednesday in a blog post. The shop, which is a block away from rival Apple Inc.’s 14th Street store, occupies part of the first floor of Google’s New York offices.

Google began experimenting with pop-up stores in 2016, the same year it debuted its Pixel smartphone and Nest smart home speaker. In the years since, the company has introduced a plethora of hardware devices and hosted subsequent pop-ups to learn more about what consumers expect from a retail store, said Jason Rosenthal, Google’s vice president of direct channels and membership.

“It’s like walking into a dream,” Ivy Ross, vice president of design, user experience and research for design and services, said during a virtual tour. “I hope customers feel the same way. I want them to be happy and inspired, like I am being in here.”

Ross oversaw the planning for the store. “It’s very rewarding to see everything come together, especially during Covid after once not being able to be in the space,” she added.

The store was designed like a social space, with sitting areas, tables and other furniture that invites a level of public intimacy and intermingling that has been a rare experience during the Covid-19 pandemic. The company said it will limit the number of people who can be in the store at once and that associates as well as customers will have to wear masks inside.

The furniture, including sofas and oval-shaped tables, are made of blond wood and cork — neutral colors so the products would stand out, Ross said. The company also wanted customers to see what Google’s products would look like “in context,” so in the store, speakers may be placed next to piles of books and other design knick-knacks to give it more a feel of being in someone’s home. Phones, tablets and other devices are operational and untethered, so visitors can fiddle around with them.

Ross said there’s a children’s room, to “park your children while shopping.” There’s also a space where people can use the Pixel phone’s Night Sight feature to take images in the dark and email the photos to themselves. There’s a room where three people can play video games through Google’s Stadia streaming service. And there’s the Imagination Space — partially enclosed by a 17-foot-tall glass round structure, with screens inside. On the screens, visitors can experience advanced or experimental Google services that may not be available to the public yet.

Rosenthal said it was important for Google to create a direct retail channel that embodies the Google brand and lets customers hear straight from the company, and gives Google feedback from customers. He declined to comment on whether the tech giant would open additional stores.

Ross touted the store’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, pointing to the flooring, made of recycled bottles, the low-energy light bulbs, conservative water usage and other measures. As with its hardware, “we believe that you don’t have to sacrifice Mother Nature with making great products,” Ross said.

Agency for Real Estate Affairs (AREA) said that the price of land in Bangkok would not change till the end of this year. Also, the average price of land in the capital increased by 4.7 per cent.

AREA explained that land from Phloen Chit to Siam became the most expensive, as the areas are available for constructing department stores or office buildings, and were accessible for working people by Skytrain.

In addition, AREA added that Covid-19 did not affect big businesses along the railway areas, as the pandemic was seen as a temporary crisis.

However, the land price near Phloenchit BTS station, or next to Siam station, were less expensive.

AREA predicted that land from the National Stadium station would be more expensive if it was used more commercially.

SET flat as US interest rate signal triggers outflows

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index closed at 1,612.98 on Friday, down 4.67 points or 0.29 per cent. Transactions totalled THB110.18 billion with an index high of 1,622.43 and a low of 1,604.44.

SET flat as US interest rate signal triggers outflows

In the morning session, Krungsri Securities forecast Friday’s SET Index would fall to a level between 1,605-1,610 points after the US Federal Reserve announced it had begun discussions on asset tapering and expected two interest rate hikes by the end of 2023 to curb rising inflation.

This signal had led to strengthening of the dollar, falling oil and gold prices and outflow of foreign funds, said Krungsri.

However, the index would be buoyed by mass buy-ups of shares gaining positive sentiment from Thailand’s reopening, and those to be listed on the FTSE Index, would help boost the index, it added.

Phuket is scheduled to reopen to foreign tourists on July 1, followed by the rest of the country by October.

The 10 stocks with the highest trade value today were GUNKUL, SCGP, PTT, OR, KBANK, AOT, CPALL, SCB, IVL and PTTEP.

Other Asian indices were mixed:

In a bid to build consumer confidence, the Department of Fisheries has instructed its officials to check all imported fish and seafood products, check final processing steps and block illegal imports.

Imported fish, seafood to undergo strict quality check in bid to boost consumption

Mesak Pakdeekong, the department’s director-general, said due to Covid-19, people are not consuming much fish or seafood, which has brought down the prices.

“However, export of processed fish and seafood products is likely to pick up, so this is an opportunity for farmers to improve their processing system,” he said.

In a bid to gain confidence among people, he said the department has appointed the Fish Quarantine and Fishing Vessels Inspection Division and Fish Inspection and Quality Control Division to check imported fish and seafood products. The departments are also tasked with ensuring all processing procedures are done in line with the department’s standards.

He also dismissed rumours that Thailand was importing shrimp from India, saying that the import of shrimp from the subcontinent had been banned since 2017. However, the department is evaluating Indian shrimp exporters.

“We confirm that all processes related to fish and seafood products are done under the department’s supervision. Hence, we call on businesses, farmers and consumers to start selling and buying fish and seafood products in a bid to stimulate the country’s economy,” he added.

Baht opens weaker, but analyst rules out plunge to 32 to the dollar

The baht opened at 31.42 to the US dollar on Friday, weakening from 31.40 at close on Thursday. The Thai currency is likely to move between 31.35 and 31.50 during the day, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Baht opens weaker, but analyst rules out plunge to 32 to the dollar

Poon said the baht tended to weaken in line with the strengthening of the dollar, but the Thai currency was also under pressure from foreign investors’ sales of Thai stocks.

He pointed out that investors were still concerned about the Thai economy as Covid-19 vaccine distribution in the country had hit a snag.

Moreover, Poon added that the baht would not touch 32 to the US dollar, as exporters aimed to sell their dollars when the baht moves between 31.50 and 31.60.

“It is almost impossible for the baht at this time to weaken to 32 to the US dollar,” he said.
