Thai boxing legend Buakaw Banchamek shaved his head on Thursday, fulfilling a promise he made about the English Premier League match between Liverpool and Manchester United last Sunday.

The boxer had announced on Facebook that he would shave his head if his favourite team, Manchester United, did not lose to the current EPL title holders. The match ended 0-0 and Buakaw duly kept his promise by sporting a new bald look on Thursday.

Surin-born Buakaw, 38, is among the most feared fighters ever to have graced a muay thai ring. His lethal combination of precision, power and pressure fighting have earned him titles as Omnoi Stadium champion (twice), Lumpinee Stadium champion, No 1-ranked fighter in Lumpinee Stadium, Thailand featherweight champion, K-1 World MAX champion (twice) and 2011 and 2012 Thai Fight tournament champion.

Entrepreneurs who will be affected by the Commerce Ministry’s anti-dumping measures on biaxially-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film can submit evidence of the impact to the Department of Foreign Trade.

The Committee on Dumping and Subsidy will consider them before imposing the measures.

“The anti-dumping measures are likely to increase the cost for manufacturers of food, drugs, medical equipment and consumer products who use BOPP films imported from China, Indonesia and Malaysia,” said Kirati Ratchnano, the department’s director-general. “Those who are in canned food or related industries, such as metal and tinplate manufacturing, could be impacted as well.

“The department will listen to entrepreneurs who provide concrete evidence that the measures will hurt their businesses, according to the Anti-Dumping and Countervailing of Foreign Products Act, which stipulates that the anti-dumping measures must prioritise the benefits of domestic manufacturers, consumers and the public.”

A source revealed that among manufacturers who will submit the evidence is Thai President Foods Pcl, manufacturer of the country’s best-selling instant noodles under “Mama” brand.

“The company pointed out that the measures would drive up the cost of packaging for instant noodles, which makes up 10 per cent of total cost, or approximately Bt0.5 per package,” said the source. “Should the measures be imposed, the company may have to adjust the retail price up, which will affect consumers on a large scale.”

After a TV anchor tested positive on Friday morning, Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesman Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin announced that he and his team may be at risk.

The National Broadcasting Services (NBT) TV anchor works with a female anchor who usually helps the CCSA team during their daily press briefing, putting her and teams as close contact.

Taweesin said he will take a Covid-19 test in the afternoon and then go into isolation.

Mobile biosafety units will also be sent to the NBT building to test everybody inside. So far, there is no information on who may be at high risk.

Baht likely to move in step with dollar

NationalJan 22. 2021

The baht opened at 29.93 to the US dollar on Friday, unchanged from Thursday’s close.

The Thai currency is likely to move between 29.85 and 30 on Friday, Krungthai market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Poon mentioned that the financial markets had started to face speculation, after it continually grew from the improved US political situation. So, the US stock indices dropped slightly, such as the Russell 2000, which decreased by 0.64 per cent.

Meanwhile, tech stocks increased, especially big ones like Apple and Intel, pushing the Nasdaq up by 0.55 per cent. Besides, the Ten-Year Treasury yield grew by 2 basis points last night.

Poon also said that the European Central Bank’s relaxed policies did not help the market to be ready for risk, due to investors’ concerns about Covid-19. The Stoxx50 decreased by 0.16 per cent.

The market strategist said that the US economic recovery tended to slow down from the virus crisis, as the labour market had not recovered. The initial jobless claims this week were 900,000 positions.

In Thailand, December export data to be announce this month would show contraction by 2 per cent year on year, due to container shortage around the world.

The baht would still move in line with the dollar and foreign funds flows, while Thailand’s surplus balance was not high.

Besides, the currency would still move in a predictable range as most market players were awaiting the results of a key Bank of Thailand meeting next month, Poon added.

Drying up of Yom River marks early arrival of drought

NationalJan 22. 2021

By THE NATION

Thailand’s yearly drought has arrived earlier than usual, with Yom River in Phichit and Sukhothai completely drying out and water sources in Chanthaburi getting low.

Farmers in Phichit have started digging wells to pull up water, so their rice crops can be irrigated. Digging wells is not new for Phichit residents, but they usually do this in March.

Farmer Pradit Chimpipop said pulling water up from underground was the only way of irrigating his 30 rais.

Yom River runs through Phichit’s districts of Sam Ngam, Pho Prathap Chang, Bung Narang and Pho Thale.

This dreaded dryness was also reported in Sukhothai, while authorities in Phrae have built dikes on the Yom River to avoid a shortage of water.

Meanwhile, the Khao Soi Dao waterfall in Chanthaburi’s Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary is running low, which will affect water sources in the East of the country.

An official at the wildlife sanctuary said drought this year has arrived a month earlier.

Sutat Weesakul, the Hydro Informatics Institute chief, was quoted by Thairath newspaper as saying that the La Niña phenomenon had in August 2020 brought heavy rain and floods to the South. If this phenomenon were to continue, then there should be regular rainfall in other regions from April onwards.

He also said that rain this year should be 9 to 10 per cent more than last year.

Aswin defends Green Line fare hike, rules out review unless ordered by govt

NationalJan 22. 2021

By THE NATION

Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said on Friday that the new fare ceiling of Green Line BTS Skytrain at Bt104 throughout the route is inexpensive and would be implemented from February 16 as planned unless stayed by the government.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) last week announced a fare hike of Bt3 per station on the Green Line BTS Skytrain route, which consequentially upped the fare ceiling to Bt104, much higher than the previously promised ceiling of Bt65 by Aswin. The announcement led to the Ministry of Transport dispatching a letter to BMA asking it to postpone the hike.

“The fare hike is necessary as BMA has no cash to pay train operation fee to Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc [BTS],” said Aswin. “The only way we will postpone the new fare rate is that the order comes directly from the government. Without such an order, the new rate will be effective on February 16 as planned.”

The Bangkok governor insisted that the Green Line rate was not expensive and the fares of other train lines were not any cheaper.

“For example, when comparing km per km, the Blue Line has an average fare of Bt1.62 per km, while the Green Line is only Bt1.23 per km,” he said. “Furthermore, the construction of other train lines was partly funded by the government at over Bt100 billion, while the Green Line was privately funded and did not require a single baht from the government.

“The new Green Line fares are in full compliance with the regulations of the Public-Private Partnership Act. If anyone suspect otherwise, they can file a case with the National Anti-Corruption Commission,” said Aswin.

Body of tourist found at bottom of Pha Diew Dai cliff in Nakhon Nayok

Officials of Khao Yai National Park were alerted to a person possibly going missing on Thursday after tourists spotted a motorcycle parked at Pha Diew Dai cliff, a famous scenic point in Nakhon Nayok province, for two days with no sign of the owner.

Officials investigated the scene and found the body of Thatchaphong Phongmee, aged 27 years, lying at the bottom of the cliff, which is about 60 metres high. Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was a local of Ang Thong province but has been working in Samut Prakarn province. One of his acquaintances reportedly told officials that the deceased had travelled to Khao Yai National Park alone on his motorcycle.

The body of the deceased was brought to Nakhon Nayok Hospital for detailed autopsy to determine the cause of death. Police estimated that it could be either accident or murder.

Thanya Nethithammakul, director-general of the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, has said that the scenic point at Pha Diew Dai cliff is a dangerous spot and that the department had proposed to build a railing around the cliff, but many parties had objected to it.

“The department will revisit the railing idea after thoroughly investigating this incident,” he added.
