The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) said on Monday that the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano eruption had an impact on nearly every coastline on Earth and that it would monitor the situation closely.

NARIT keeps close watch for impact of Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai eruption

When a volcano erupts, the magma created by melting rocks rises and pushes through vents and fissures to the Earth’s surface. Sometimes the magma flows out in the form of lava, however, if the pressure of gas and steam under the Earth’s surface is high enough the magma shoots into the air, covering everything around it in fiery lava and ash. When a volcano underwater explodes, it can create a tsunami.

The volcano near Tonga in the Pacific Ocean exploded with huge amounts of gas and steam blasting into the air and having a widespread impact.

The impact of the eruption was measured in foreign and local weather stations at the following Thai time:

  • 3.42pm: Australia, Springbrook Research Observatory
  • 7.50pm: Songkhla, regional observatory
  • 7.59pm: Nakhon Ratchasima, regional observatory
  • 8.01pm: Chachoengsao, regional observatory
  • 8.25pm: Chiang Mai, Princess Sirindhorn AstroPark
  • 8.28pm: Chiang Mai, Thai National Observatory on Doi Inthanon
  • 8.42pm: China, Gao Mei Gu Astronomical observatory

NARIT said this information can be used to determine the impact of the eruption and a similar system can be used for other natural phenomena, such as working out the impact of an asteroid.

Children between the ages of five and 11 will start getting their Covid-19 jabs from mid-February, Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang said on Monday.

Covid-19 jabs for 5 to 11-year-olds in Bangkok from mid-Feb

“We are compiling a list of eligible children to allocate an adequate supply of vaccines in each district,” he said. “Vaccination will be provided at selected schools or hospitals, depending on the number of children eligible in each area.”

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will also distribute fliers to parents and schools detailing how children should be prepared for the vaccine and steps to take after they are jabbed, Aswin said.

As of Monday, 427,696 children or 85.57 per cent of 499,800 children aged 12 to 17 in Bangkok had received their first jab.

The BMA has also provided mobile units for bed-ridden patients who cannot travel to vaccination venues.

As of Sunday, 10,471 people registered for a mobile vaccination service, while 5,256 of them have already received their shot.

People can register for their Covid-19 shots via the QueQ application.

Turning Phrae from silver city of seniors to golden ‘city in the forest’

The Nation Building Institute (NBI) proposed on Monday that Phrae be turned into a “city in the forest” to draw Thai and foreign retirees.

Turning Phrae from silver city of seniors to golden ‘city in the forest’

Phrae is a hidden gem in the North of Thailand with splendid temples and beautiful surroundings.

Prof Dr Kriengsak Chareonwongsak, who chairs NBI, said Phrae was now a “city of seniors” with a sluggish economy that is forcing younger people to seek jobs elsewhere.

Phrae is the fourth province in Thailand to have the highest number of seniors, second in terms of death rate and first when it comes to disabled people. Besides, Kriengsak said, the population of Phrae is dropping by 5,000 per year.

“To tackle this issue, we have proposed that Phrae be turned into a ‘city in the forest’ to draw Thais and foreigners to live and work here and enjoy the good weather, tradition and cheap cost of living,” he said.

Kriengsak also proposed that the law be amended to allow the development of degraded forest areas.

He expects this plan to generate some 4 billion baht yearly by drawing 5,000 long-term travellers and 10,000 short-term visitors.

He said that under the “city in the forest” plan, NBI will develop new products and traditions, including food, fabric, wooden furniture, teak products, liquor, folk and fusion art, etc.

He also said that NBI will promote investment in the province and its transportation system.

“We expect to see changes made by locals that will help inspire other provinces,” he added.

The party has instructed people who were helping with the election as well as those who attended Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chalermchai Sri-on’s press conference on Sunday to undergo tests and isolate themselves. People who were close to Dech-it should be particularly vigilant, it said.

Dech-it said he immediately took a test when he began feeling ill and developed a sore throat. He is now being treated at Bangkok Hospital in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district.

He said he may have picked up the infection when he met many people while helping with the election campaign.

Meanwhile, by-election winner Supaporn Kamnerdpol has not tested positive but will be isolated.

Relevant agencies have been instructed to monitor developments on the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano eruption and ensure that Thailand’s disaster warning system is in working condition, a source from Government House said on Monday.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has also instructed relevant agencies to communicate with each other and prepare to mitigate disaster in case a tsunami is created by the eruption.

On Sunday, deputy government spokesperson Traisulee Traisoranakul said the eruption on Friday and Saturday had taken place about 9,500km away from the coast of Narathiwat. However, the eruption triggered tsunami warnings and advisories for several countries across the Pacific, including American Samoa, New Zealand, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Australia, Japan and the US.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported that Thailand has two tsunami detection buoys – one in the Indian Ocean, which provides a warning close to two hours in advance, and another in the Andaman Sea, which provides a warning 45 minutes in advance.

“The Indian Ocean buoy is in working condition, but the one in the Andaman Sea has floated away from its position and the department is getting another buoy ready in its place,” the department said.

Cabinet set to impose price controls as living costs jump

Thailand’s growing cost-of-living crisis will be top of the agenda at tomorrow’s (Tuesday) Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, a government spokesperson said on Monday.

Cabinet set to impose price controls as living costs jump

The government is facing pressure over the sharp rise in prices for everyday items such as pork, chicken and eggs.

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana warned that the price of meat, fruit and other basic commodities could rise again at the end of this month, spurred by higher demand over Chinese New Year.

He said the government is ready to fix prices of certain products to ease burdens on consumers.

Despite the price rises, Thailand’s inflation rate this year is still within the target range of 1-3 per cent, he added.

Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit convened a meeting of the Ministry of Commerce to monitor the price situation of various products. He has called for the setting up of a war room to track product prices, solve problems and prosecute opportunists, Boonyarit Kalayanamit, permanent secretary at the Commerce Ministry, said on Monday.

The Thai Wholesale-Retail Association had said last year that there would be a price adjustment of soft drinks by a large black drink operator in late December 2021 due to increased production costs.

The price adjustment was expected to increase store retail price by about Bt1 per bottle on average.

Thailand’s Omicron wave ‘stabilising’ despite global surge

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

Thailand has avoided the surge in Omicron cases seen across the globe thanks to tight health measures and public cooperation, a Senate member said on Monday.

Thailand’s Omicron wave ‘stabilising’ despite global surge

The Omicron outbreak in Thailand has stabilised, defying predictions of a worst-case scenario for Thailand’s fourth wave of Covid-19, said Chalermchai Boonyaleephan, deputy chairman of the Senate committee on public health.

Doctors had earlier expressed concern that the highly contagious Omicron strain would result in up to 20,000 new cases per day as people travelled home and back to work after the long New Year holiday.

The worst-case scenario was expected about 14 days after New Year’s Eve celebrations.

But from January 14 to 17, the daily caseload in Thailand started to stabilize instead of spiking like in Europe and the United States, Chalermchai said.

On Monday, the caseload actually fell. The Public Health Ministry reported 6,929 new Covid-19 cases during the previous 24 hours, compared to 8,077 new cases announced on Sunday.

Chalermchai said Thailand’s success in preventing a sharp rise in cases came from a combination of nine measures.

These were: the work-from-home policy, ATK screening for employees who had to go into work, mandatory face masks for police and the public, eating meals separately, avoiding crowded or poorly ventilated areas, faster mass vaccination, tighter disease controls, taking daily showers and not hugging one another like Westerners, and warm weather compared to winter in Western nations.
