The prime minister ignored reporters on Thursday after they asked him why the US State Department did not invite Thailand to the Summit for Democracy in December.

On Wednesday, the State Department announced a list of 110 countries that would participate in the first online Summit for Democracy on December 9 and 10. Thailand did not appear on the invitation list.

China and Russia, too, were not invited.

Only three Asean countries will attend the summit – Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

When reporters asked Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha about the matter on Thursday, the premier just gave them a grim look before walking into Government House.

The US-hosted summit is aimed at helping to halt the decline of democracy and the collapse of rights and freedoms around the world.

Suphan Buri shrimp farmers hit govt agencies with 210 lawsuits over flooding #SootinClaimon.Com

Faced with unceasing trouble even after two months of flooding, angry Suphan Buri shrimp farmers slapped government agencies with as many as 210 lawsuits on Thursday for their water “mismanagement”. They are demanding compensation to the tune of THB142 million for damages incurred.

The shrimp farmers in Bang Pla Ma and Song Phi Nong districts, Suphan Buri province gathered at the Administrative Court to sue the Royal Irrigation Department and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives for the mismanagement of water, which has caused high flooding since the end of September.

The giant freshwater prawn farmers in the province are said to suffer “100 per cent” from the flood damage, while more than 2,000 residents are intending to file additional lawsuits.

Manit Puttachanya, a shrimp farmer in Bang Pla Ma district, told the reporters on Thursday that the government intended to divert the water into the areas to avoid flooding in industrial and community sections.

“The farmers in the districts have been suffered from the fall of shrimp prices for more than three years since the beginning of the pandemic. We thought the price would become higher during the upcoming New Year festival as the Covid-19 situation eases, but now our farms are covered with floods,” Manit said.

Manit said that he did not want to file the lawsuit and his intention was to call on the related government agencies to fully pay the compensation for the actual damage amount. He said the government compensation of 11,780 baht per rai for not more than five rai for each farmer did not help, as one shrimp farmer would own at least 10-20 rai.

“The average investment per pond is 50,000 baht and the farmers are currently facing debt problems. There are only expenses to pay for the loan of investing in the shrimp farm. We know that the government does not have the ability to help much. But we do hope that this litigation will at least alleviate the problem,” Manit added.

Soldiers of 14th Infantry Regiment on Wednesday night arrested 184 Myanmar migrants as they were crossing the border into Thailand without documentation at Phob Phra district in Tak province.

The Royal Thai Army has deployed officers to patrol the Thai-Myanmar border in Tak since earlier this month as the number of Myanmar nationals trying to slip into the country via natural channels to find jobs has been rising, while putting the locals at risk of contracting Covid-19.

The 184 migrants arrested on Wednesday consist of 111 males and 73 females. One of the migrants reportedly said that the group have traveled by foot from Myanmar and entered Thailand via a grove wood in Chong Khaeb subdistrict at night to avoid officials’ detection. They had also paid an agency who promised to help them find a job in inner provinces of Thailand at 20,000 baht per person.

Hollywood superstar Russell Crowe took to Twitter on Wednesday to affirm that he misses Thailands “amazing” restaurants, including a “great” burger restaurant in Silom.

His Twitter post read:
“#Thailand #Bangkok So many amazing restaurants, street markets, even food stalls in the malls can have brilliant fresh options. Found this surprise one day on a #lostinbangkok expedition. It’s called Fats & Angry!! Great humour, great burgers. ‘made with love’ chef said.”

The Australian actor had visited Thailand recently to shoot a buddy movie with Zac Efron called “The Greatest Beer Run Ever”. He had to undergo quarantine for 14 days in Phuket before arriving in Bangkok.

He has posted pictures on Twitter and spoke of how impressed he was by many things in Bangkok, including the Michelin Star Jay Fai restaurant and street food stalls. The capital’s maze of electricity and cable wires even got a mention.

The Thai government thanked him for promoting the country by effectively playing the part of Thailand’s tourism ambassador, and promised to follow up on a couple of his suggestions on how to improve the capital city.

Before leaving Thailand, Crowe posted a farewell message saying: “Goodbye Bangkok. Stay happy and busy and beautiful.”

Suicide risk rate for Thais increases 10-fold amid Covid situation #SootinClaimon.Com

Thais tend to have higher stress, especially during the latest Covid-19 wave, while the suicide risk rate has risen 10 times compared to last year, the Department of Mental Health (DMH) said on Wednesday.

The department is accelerating its move to reduce suicide risk by promoting the “Vaccine Jai” (Mental Vaccine) campaign.

DMH director-general Dr Amporn Benjapolpitak said during Wednesday’s virtual seminar “Decoding Innovations for Mental Vaccines in the Community 2021” – which was piloted in a prototype area covering four provinces: Lamphun, Kalasin, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Nakhon Sawan – that the risk of suicidal thoughts since August has increased to 7-8 per cent from 0.7-0.8 per cent during the same period last year.

She said that similar to global suicide rates, the risk would gradually increase in six months after each crisis and peak within a year. Therefore, during this one-year period from August 2021 to 2022, the matter needs close monitoring in a bid to reduce the risk of suicide.

Amporn suggested that suicidal thoughts can be eased by taking time to carefully process one’s thoughts and avoid the use of drugs or alcohol consumption. The person at risk needs to gain confidence, with hope that the situation will become better, while seeking help and advice from family or friends if needed.

“The DMH is expanding its 1323 call centre to provide help to those in need. The Vaccine Jai campaign, launched in April, is a mental health assessment tool that aims to evaluate risks and provide guidelines for pandemic-related mental health issues,” she added.

Anutin worried that bars, restaurants serving booze could be Covid hotspots #SootinClaimon.Com

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40009244

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Wednesday that he is concerned bars and restaurants which serve alcoholic beverages to dine-in customers could become hotspots for Covid-19.

“Establishments that serve alcoholic beverages to customers must strictly follow Covid Free Setting measures, as well as other disease control measures announced by the ministry,” he warned.

“Provincial communicable disease committees must inspect these businesses thoroughly before they are allowed to reopen. Cooks, servers and other staff must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 at the rate required by Safety & Health Administration [SHA] and SHA Plus standards,” Anutin said.

“Furthermore, customers should make sure they are fully vaccinated before entering these venues,” the minister said.

“If all preventive measures are strictly followed, we will soon be able to reopen other businesses as well.”

Anutin also said that so far less than 10 million people in Thailand have yet to be vaccinated.

“Most in this group live in remote areas, while the ministry is preparing to dispatch mobile vaccination units to give them jabs as soon as possible,” he said.

“People who have reserved alternative vaccines with private hospitals but have yet to get a jab schedule can receive a shot of the government’s vaccine to increase immunity in the meantime,” Anutin advised.

“Currently we have mRNA vaccines, namely Pfizer and Moderna, in stock, which have been directly donated to the government. You can inform a nearby hospital or vaccination unit if you want to be inoculated, while doctors will consider giving booster shots depending on a person’s vaccination history and risk level,” he added.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Wednesday that he would like to send moral support to BlackPinks Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban, who has contracted Covid-19.

“All Thais and I wish Lisa will get well soon,” the premier said after presenting the SMEs Excellence Awards 2021 and Thailand Corporate Excellence Awards 2021 at a ceremony held at Bangkok’s Athenee Hotel.

Lisa is the only Thai member of South Korea’s famed K-pop group BlackPink. Band manager YG Entertainment confirmed she was diagnosed with the coronavirus earlier on Wednesday.

The company also announced that the other three members of the group – Rosé, Jennie and Jisoo – are currently awaiting their PCR test results, while noting that neither of the three has been “classified as close contacts yet”.

“We first shared this information quickly and accurately with representatives and staff, and we took strong preemptive measures even beyond the guidelines of health authorities,” the Soompi website quoted YG as saying. “We will continue to not hold back on providing full support for the health of our artists and related staff members, which is our top priority.”

Meanwhile, Twitter user @TopTrendThai reported on Thursday morning that the hashtag #GetWellSoonLisa is now trending in 1st place on Twitter worldwide.

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) recently planned to convert Hua Lamphong Station into a commercial area in line with Transport Ministrys policy to promote Bang Sue Grand Station as a new railway hub in Bangkok.

This caused the station, which acted as the country’s railway hub for 105 years, to gradually suspend its train services before December 24 this year.

The Nation Thailand invites you to witness the atmosphere of Hua Lamphong Station when it was fully operated before the transition to Bang Sue Grand Station.
