The Thailand Meteorological Department said on Thursday (November 11) that the high-pressure system from China covers upper Thailand, resulting in cool weather and a decrease in temperatures by 1-2 °C.

Meanwhile, the strong northeast monsoon across the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea leads to isolated heavy to very heavy rains in the South. Waves are 2-3 meters high in the Gulf and more than 3 meters high during thundershowers. People should beware of the severe condition that may cause flash floods and overflows. Residents along the Gulf should beware of inshore surge. All ships should proceed with caution, and small boats should keep ashore until November 13.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours is as follows:

North: Cool weather with isolated light rains; temperature lows of 19-23 degrees and highs of 28-32 degrees Celsius. Temperature on hilltops is likely to drop to 8-12 degrees Celsius.

Northeast: Cool weather with strong winds; temperature lows of 18-21 degrees and highs of 29-30 degrees Celsius. Temperature on hilltops is likely to drop to 10-14 degrees Celsius.

East: Cool weather with strong winds; temperature lows of 22-24 degrees, highs of 31-33 degrees Celsius; waves 1-2 meters high and 2 meters offshore.

Ministry advises people to only use FDA-approved ATKs #SootinClaimon.Com

Suphakit Sirilak, director-general of the Department of Medical Sciences, said these kits are easily and cheaply available.

He said people who have been in the vicinity of those with Covid-19 infection should wait for three to five days before conducting a test. However, those who have a fever, cold or cough can take a test immediately.

The correct way of collecting a sample is putting the stick two to three centimetres into the nostril and then spinning it five times. This must be done in both nostrils. Those collecting saliva samples must follow the instructions strictly, he advised.

Suphakit said ATK that do not have the FDA stamp of approval can provide false test results, as can kits that are contaminated. He also said checking before or after the set time or incorrect usage can also provide false results.

He pointed out that if many ATK tests come out positive in one venue, people should not be immediately isolated. Instead, he said, the schools or companies should contact their nearest provincial health office and have the people retested using the RT-PCR method.

The government dismissed reports that Loy Krathong celebrations this year had been banned, saying only strict measures have been put in place.

Several news channels reported on Tuesday that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had ordered a ban on celebrations to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“The prime minister said activities can be held, but participants and organisers, as well as related business operators, must strictly follow disease control measures set by the Public Health Ministry,” government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said on Wednesday. “The government will hold a Loy Krathong celebration at Government House on November 19 and the premier will preside over its opening ceremony.

“The Public Health Ministry’s Department of Health has issued regulations for agencies or businesses organising activities, including setting up screening checkpoints where visitors must register via MorChana application, pass thermal scanning and sanitise their hands,” Thanakorn added.

“Service providers are advised to maintain social distancing by keeping seats at least a metre apart and ensuring the venue is properly ventilated.

“Participants are required to wear facemasks at all times, while consumption of alcohol is prohibited,” he said.

Loy Krathong is marked on the full moon of the 12th month of the lunar calendar every year. On this day, people gather around lakes, rivers and canals to float lotus-shaped rafts decorated with candles, incense and flowers as offerings to the goddess of water. The festival falls on November 19 this year.

Kanchanaburi border patrol soldiers rounded up 218 Myanmar nationals who had sneaked into Thailand via Kanchanaburi’s Sangkhla Buri district on Tuesday.

Of them, 125 are men and 93 are women. The illegal migrants reportedly said that they had entered Thailand illegally via natural channels and had paid agents 25,000 to 26,000 baht per person to transport them to job sites in Samut Sakhon, Ratchaburi, Chonburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Kanchanaburi.

The detainees have been put in isolation for Covid-19 testing, after which they will undergo legal procedures. Preliminary testing found no one with body temperature above 37.5 degrees Celsius.

Colonel Chaleomchai Chadjai, commander of Kanchanaburi’s 9th Infantry Division, has said that border patrol soldiers have received intelligence from the Surasri task force that a number of Myanmar nationals have tried to slip into Thailand since earlier this month, especially along Thai-Myanmar borders in Saiyok, Muang and Sangkhla Buri districts.
