Suvarnabhumi Airport has welcomed 2,424 incoming passengers travelling on 40 international flights on Monday (November 1), the first day of the government’s plan to reopen selected provinces to revive the country’s tourism industry.

Under the plan, visitors travelling by air from 63 countries that have a low level of Covid-19 infections will not have to quarantine, but they must prove they have received both jabs of an approved Covid-19 vaccine for at least 14 days as well as produce a negative RT-PCR test result taken no more than 72 hours before flying.

Of the incoming passengers, 1,534 were foreigners and 890 were Thais.”

Kittiphong added that upon arrival, all foreign visitors must present the certificate of entry (COE) to International Communicable Disease Control officers or scan the QR Code of Thailand Pass system. “We have deployed 10-15 officers at the checkpoints to facilitate the visitors. This process will take approximately one minute per passenger,” he said.

After passing immigration procedures at the airport, foreign tourists will be transported to a hotel to receive Covid-19 testing via RT-PCR method, and will spend the night there to wait for the result. If the result is negative, they can proceed to travel to selected destinations in Thailand.

Prison authorities across Thailand should soon be ready to allow visitors once all inmates have been double-jabbed against Covid-19, Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said on Monday.

As of October 15, 21 prisons had administered the first jab to all inmates. The minister said that if the vaccination procedure goes as planned, prisons may start letting visitors in from November 12 onwards.

He also said that he has coordinated with the private sector to provide 2 million N95 masks to the Corrections Department to distribute among prisons. Somsak added that prisoners will be allocated seven masks each for protection when their relatives and friends visit.

The Public Health Ministry has decided to administer two shots of the Pfizer vaccine to people living in the four southern border provinces, Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration spokesperson Dr Apisamai Srirangsan said on Monday.

She explained that the decision was based on the fact that the provinces of Narathiwat, Songkhla, Pattani and Yala have been seeing a steady increase in new infections. Also, she said, all three strains of the virus – Alpha, Beta and Delta – have been detected in the deep South.

Apisamai added that the ministry is closely monitoring 10 provinces that have been showing slightly unusual numbers. The provinces under close watch are Khon Kaen, Rayong, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Tak, Chanthaburi and the four border provinces.

The director of a private Bangkok hospital has been summoned to acknowledge charges on Thursday (November 4) for allegedly smuggling “Favipiravir” pills and selling them online, police announced on Monday.

Ateam from the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) and representatives of the Public Health Ministry told the press on Monday morning that they had received a tip-off from a manager at the hospital in Bang Kapi district.

Armed with a search warrant, the officials checked the hospital last Thursday and found a purchase order for Favipiravir pills even though the hospital had no record of Covid-19 patients.

This case is part of an extended investigation after police arrested nine suspects for allegedly selling Favipiravir pills via social media at five times the actual price. They also confiscated 390 boxes of Favipiravir, which were traced back to the hospital in question.

At the press conference, the officials urged people to only purchase Covid-19 related products from authorised pharmacies as the consumption of incorrect medication can lead to drug-resistant infections. People were also encouraged to report the smuggling of pills via the CPPD 1135 hotline or via its Facebook page.

Police on Sunday tracked down and arrested the man behind the “VK Nen-Jook” page on the European social network, VK.

Kornchai Klaiklueng, chief of the CyberCrime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), said the case came to light when a woman complained that her photographs and video clips had been posted on the site without permission.

Chartpon (surname withheld), a 27-year-old office worker, was caught at his home in Bangkok’s Pathum Wan district. Police also seized a desktop PC, an iPhone and the man’s bankbook.

The raid was conducted under a search warrant issued by the Bangkok South Criminal Court.

Chartpon, whose VK Nen-Jook page has some 59,000 followers, faces charges of illegally advertising online gambling sites and distributing pornography.

The suspect admitted to running up to seven secret pages on the social networking site and said he had 200,000 followers in total. He said he opened the “VK Nen-Jook” page at the end of last year to look for more followers and earn money to cover his gambling debts.

Songkhla Zoo jumped on the Halloween bandwagon by creating a spooky deer-feeding area complete with ghosts and coffins.

Wanchai Tanwattana, director of the zoo located in Songkhla’s Muang district, said the management decided to add extra colour to attract tourists.

The zoo staff put up a couple of ghosts and coffins in the area where deer usually show up for their daily feed.

Wanchai said though the deer were initially scared by the foreign objects, they soon realised they were harmless and began munching on the grass as normal.

However, he said, the spookfest drew plenty of visitors, especially snap-happy families from Hat Yai district.

Thais should be careful and strictly observe every measure to contain the spread of Covid-19, especially now that the country has reopened, Public Health permanent secretary Dr Kiattiphum Wongrajit said on Sunday.

He said the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration has marked 17 provinces as tourism pilot areas, of which four provinces – Bangkok, Krabi, Phang Nga and Phuket – are completely reopened.

Hence, he said, people should avoid drinking alcohol in public places as they can become careless.

“Citizens should strictly observe measures to prevent infections, such as maintaining distance, washing hands regularly and wearing a facemask, even though most people have been fully vaccinated,” he said.

“Meanwhile, venue operators should strictly adhere to Covid-free setting principles to ensure there is no transmission.”
