The authorities are concerned about the surge in anti-vaccination TikTok clips, which is also sparking worries among parents and students about the side effects of Pfizer shots.

Deputy government spokesperson Ratchada Dhnadirek said on Saturday that 71 per cent or 3.8 million of Thailand’s 5 million students in the 12-18 age range had registered for a Covid-19 jab.

As of Thursday, 150,190 students had received their first Pfizer shot and 1,825 their second.

As for the TikTok clips released by anti-vaxxers, Ratchada said the Pfizer vaccine was safe and efficient. The vaccine has also received a stamp of approval from the World Health Organisation (WHO), both the US and Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Public Health Ministry, she said.

She added that though a few Pfizer recipients have developed some rare symptoms after the jab, the WHO Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GACVS) has said that the protection an mRNA jab can provide far outweighs the risk of developing side effects.

A very small percentage of healthy boys globally developed the rare symptom of heart inflammation after receiving the Pfizer shot.

Ratchada said jabs were necessary to boost immunity and allow children to attend classes when schools reopen in November.

The authorities are also looking into the option of conducting random tests among students every two weeks.

The Pfizer shot has been given to 12- to 17-year-olds in many countries, including the US, UK, South Korea, Japan, Spain and Norway. The vaccine manufacturer Pfizer-BioNTech is now seeking US FDA approval for emergency usage on children aged between five and 11.

Ministry of Public Health reported on Saturday (October 9) morning that in the past 24 hours there are 10,630 new patients who tested positive for Covid-19, 67 of whom have been found in prisons.

Death toll increased by 73, while 10,542 patients were cured and allowed to leave hospitals.

The country’s total caseload from Covid-19 stands at 1,700,067 – 1,572,332 of whom have recovered, 110,128 are still in hospitals and 17,607 have died.

Separately, another 480,064 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, 489,043 their second shot and 40,965 a booster, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationwide to 59,308,772.

According to Worldometer, confirmed cases globally had risen to 238.02 million on Saturday, 215.16 million of whom have recovered, 18 million are active cases (83,374 in severe condition) and 4.86 million have died (up by 7,611).

Thailand ranks 25th in the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 45.14 million, followed by India with 33.93 million, Brazil with 21.55 million, the UK with 8.08 million and Russia with 7.72 million.

The Thailand Meteorological Department said on Saturday (October 9) that the strong southwest monsoon prevails across the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. Rain eases in most of Thailand with isolated heavy rain still in the South.

People in risky areas should beware of severe condition and rain accumulation that may cause flash flood and overflow. Waves in the Andaman Sea are 2-3 meters high and over 3 meters high in thundershowers. All ships should proceed with caution and keep off thundershowers, while small boats should keep ashore.

The department also mentioned that the tropical storm “LIONROCK” over the upper South China Sea and southeast of Haikou, China is expected to make landfall over upper Vietnam during October 10-11.

Bangkok’s 10pm to 4am curfew hours will have to be strictly observed by people living in the Din Daeng flats, Metropolitan Police announced on Friday. This order was issued in a bid to prevent chaos as anti-government protesters continue holding rallies in the area.

Police deputy spokesman Pol General Krisana Pattanacharoen said on Friday that the crowd control police have been on the operation of locking the Din Daeng area during the curfew time from 4 pm to 4 am since Thursday, as the Thalu Gas group often gather and cause chaos during that time. The police also announced that the Din Daeng residents are to strictly stay inside their accommodation during the curfew time.
 

The deputy spokesman said that the operation will focus on restricting the protesters or outsiders from infiltrating into the Din Daeng flat community by placing forces to firmly guard the doors and areas within various alleys.
 
“The officers are performing their duty to maintain order for the people in the area. We ask for your cooperation and understanding. The officials are monitoring the situation to see if the operation will need to be performed daily or not,” said the police.

The Minburi Criminal Court on Friday upheld an earlier verdict issued over the murder of Jakkrit Panichpatikum – a member of the national shooting team – but decided to reduce his mother-in-law’s life sentence to 25 years. All other sentences remain unchanged.

The court said Surang Duangchinda’s sentence had been reduced because she was old with no prior criminal records and had committed the crime under distress. It also said her confession had helped with the investigation of the case.

Surang, 79, said she had arranged the hit because she wanted to free her daughter from domestic abuse, which had been going on for several years.

Jakkrit, 40, was shot dead on October 19, 2013, while he was sitting in his car in Bangkok’s Minburi district.

On December 19, 2016, the Minburi Provincial Court sentenced Jakkrit’s widow, Dr Nitiwadee “Mor Nim” Pucharoenyos, and lawyer Santi Thongsem to death for masterminding the killing. It also gave a life sentence to the gunman Jeerasak Klinkhai and motorbike driver Tawatchai Phetchote. The four defendants were also ordered to pay Jakkrit’s parents 2.5 million baht in compensation.

The court, however, acquitted Jakkrit’s mother-in-law.

On August 7, 2018, the Appeal Court reversed the verdict, acquitting Jakkrit’s widow, but slapped Surang with a death sentence after she confessed to masterminding the assassination. The court later reduced her sentence to life.

Loei’s Chiang Khan district will open its doors to double-jabbed tourists from November 1 as part of the government’s plan to slowly open the country to travellers next month.

Provincial governor Chaitawat Niemsri said on Friday that the first step will be to vaccinate 70 per cent of Chiang Khan’s population above the age of 18. There are 33,968 persons who fall under this category and 55.18 per cent or 26,777 of them have received their first dose.

Chaitawat held a meeting with Loei’s communicable disease committee and tourism operators on Friday to discuss the reopening of Chiang Khan as well as set up guidelines.

Travellers to Loei will be required to show proof that they have been double-jabbed or a negative RT-PCR result taken within 72 hours. Those without proof of jabs or test results will be provided with an RT-PCR test. Those with a negative test result will be allowed to enter the province, while those testing positive will be admitted to the hospital.

Chiang Khan is a small peaceful town located on the banks of the Mekong River with Laos on the other side. It is an old city and very popular among local tourists.
