US government agencies will start discussions next week with a Thai working team on donating another 1 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines, Manasvi Srisodapol, Thailands ambassador to the US, said.

He said the discussions will pave the way for vaccine shipment in line with US Senator Tammy Duckworth’s announcement in July and the US ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield’s remarks during a visit to Thailand in August.

“I and other related agencies have closely lobbied the US government agencies in a bid to get vaccines as soon as possible after the US had announced it would deliver an additional million doses to Thailand,” he said.

He told the press that the discussions next week would cover shipment methods, contract documents and public relations, citing the previous discussions on shipment of 1.5 million vaccine doses.

He said he was not aware yet which vaccines would be delivered to Thailand.

Nearly 2,300 at-risk students were vaccinated in Bangkok without any side-effects.

Deputy Government Spokesperson, Ratchada Thanadirek, said that the government is preparing to inoculate more than 4.5 million students aged 12-18 years with the Pfizer vaccine.

In a pilot project undertaken by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), 2,295 students/youths in the risk group of seven diseases were given the Pfizer vaccine at the Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital, Nawamintrathirat University.

They included 1,681 who received the first dose and 614 received the second dose. No side-effects were reported.

More than 5,000 students have registered for vaccination.

Currently, the Ministry of Education is surveying the number of students with parents’ consent before opening vaccine units in the area of the educational institutions in each province.

The government appealed for more healthy volunteers to test the Baiya Vaccine, Phase 1.

Deputy government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek made the announcement as not enough people had passed the volunteer qualifications.

The project is accepting additional volunteers to test the vaccine Baiya Sars CoV-2 Vax 1 Phase 1 at Chulalongkorn Hospital and the Saowapa Institute of the Thai Red Cross Society. The volunteers must be healthy, aged between 18-75 years, and should not have received the Covid-19 vaccine.

A man suspected of cutting Dark Red Line cables to steal them has been arrested, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said.

The alleged cable thief, Annop Khampromma, 31, reportedly cut and stole cables eight times. The value of the damage is under appraisal.

SRT Governor Nirut Maneephan revealed he had filed a complaint at Pratunam Police Station after being informed of the theft by the chief of Rangsit Railway Station.

Cable cutting does not affect the safety of train services, but it may lead to slower service on the Red Line.

The SRT governor has instructed relevant agencies to clear weeds along the fence to facilitate thorough surveillance and to prevent further crime.

Nirut said he had ordered the follow-up and prosecution of the perpetrators to the full extent of the law, with both civil and criminal cases to claim damages. The case is a civil offence related to a criminal case. In addition, charges of trespassing, causing risk in operation of the service and damaging government property will be pressed.

Continuous thundershowers, with isolated heavy to very heavy rains, are forecast for the Central and the East regions, while isolated heavy rains are expected in the North, the Northeast, Bangkok and its vicinity including the South, the Thailand Meteorological Department said on Sunday.

Amonsoon trough lies across the lower North, the Central and the lower Northeast, while a low-pressure cell covers the Central region.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand.

People in the risky areas should beware of severe rain that may cause overflows and flash floods, the department said.

Wind waves 1-2 metres high are expected in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, about a metre high in the lower Gulf of Thailand, and above two metres high during thundershowers.

All ships should proceed with caution and keep off thundershowers, the department said.

Ministry of Public Health reported on Sunday (September 26) morning that in the past 24 hours there are 12,353 new patients who tested positive for Covid-19, 532 of whom have been found in prisons.

Death toll increased by 125, while 14,305 patients were cured and allowed to leave hospitals.

Cumulative cases in the country are at 1,561,638 with 16,268 total deaths.

The US Embassy in Bangkok posted on Twitter on Saturday that the US will donate an additional 1 million doses of safe and effective vaccines to Thailand.

The embassy added that the US and Thailand are working in close coordination to complete all necessary documentation. They look forward to the second shipment of vaccines to Thailand as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, US Senator Tammy Duckworth told Thai Sang Thai Party leader Sudarat Keyuraphan that Thailand had not yet sent a response document to the US about the donation of 1 million Pfizer doses. 

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tanee Sangrat said on Thursday that Thai vaccine authorities were in close contact with US diplomats in Bangkok.
 
He added that Minister Don Pramudwinai will meet with Senator Duckworth in person at the White House after he completes his mission in New York.

Schools will finalise the list of students who opt for the Pfizer vaccine on Sunday to send it to the Ministry of Education.

Schools must collect the full name, ID card number, date of birth, and consent for Pfizer vaccination, Education

Minister Trinuch Thienthong said on Friday.

Trinuch also asked schools to separate the list of students that want the Pfizer vaccine but currently live in other provinces.

Schools must send information to provincial education offices on Sunday. Provincial education offices will prepare the provincial list to send to the Bureau of Integrated Education Affairs on Tuesday.

The Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education will finalise the list of students currently residing in other provinces on Wednesday.

The Department of Disease Control will receive the list on Thursday to distribute the vaccines for each province. Provincial health offices will set the date and place for vaccination.

Students who live in other provinces will not need to travel back to their province of residence for vaccination.

According to the government, 4.5 million students aged 12 to 17 will be inoculated with the Pfizer vaccine in October if permitted by parents.

The long-neck Karen were reportedly among tourism entrepreneurs in Mae Hong Son province who received jabs of Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine allocated by the Chulabhorn Royal Academy.

On Friday, a total of 500 people were vaccinated, and among them were the long-neck Karen.

The vaccination in the province’s Muang district will be organised again on September 30 and on October 2, 5, 6, 7 and 9.

The Tourism Business Association of Mae Hong Son told the press that the vaccination was to prepare the province for receiving tourists in the upcoming high season.

A ponzi scheme through an online application has defrauded over 4,000 people and their losses could amount to over Bt1 billion, the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) revealed recently.

More than 4,000 victims have reported the alleged “Nas App” fraud.

Victims first reported the fraud to the CCIB on September 4.

The app allegedly tricked victims into investing in a Ponzi scheme.

The “Nas App” claimed to be a middleman for trading stocks, gold and bitcoin. The CCIB initially expected that more than 10,000 victims could have suffered total losses of 6 billion baht.

CCIB commissioner Pol Lt-General Kornchai Klayklueng revealed that the first 20 victims who reported the alleged fraud had lost 9 million baht in total.

The CCIB created a QR code for other victims to report the case. The agency said 4,282 victims who had suffered total damage of 590 million baht had reported the case so far.

Kornchai said that the company was registered by a 23-year-old man named Pakawat (surname was not revealed). The “Nas App” case could be as big as the “Forex 3d” case.

Kornchai added that the CCIB had contacted the Department of Special Investigation and the Anti-Money Laundering Office to investigate the money trail.
