Mahidol Uni creates anti-Covid mouthwash

Mahidol University’s Faculty of Dentistry has patented a new mouthwash that reduces the spread of new coronavirus via patient’s saliva.

The new mouthwash was developed in research with Mahidol University’s Faculty of Tropical Medicine to find a formula that help reduces the spreading of Covid-19.

“We use a safe amount of hydrogen peroxide as an anti-viral agent plus other ingredients that will not irritate the oral cavity,” said Dr Surakit Wisutthiwatthanakorn, director of Mahidol University’s Dentistry Hospital.

Surakit added that the trial phase among patients at the Dentistry Hospital revealed that the mouthwash is capable of killing more than 99.9 per cent of new coronavirus in patients’ saliva.

“For example, if a patient has 100,000 units of Covid-19 virus in their saliva, after using this mouthwash for one minute, only 41 units will still be alive,” he said. “Furthermore, the mouthwash is able to tackle mutated variants of the virus, as it eliminates the fat layer protecting the virus, rendering it incapable of multiplying.”

The anti-Covid mouthwash does not affect the colour of the user’s teeth and can be stored at room temperature for more than a year, he added.

Mahidol University is planning to distribute the new mouthwash to field hospitals at prisons and military camps, where the risk of infection from patients and medical professionals is high due to limited space and protective gear.

Samut Prakan floods slowly recede after total inundation over weekend

Floodwaters in Samut Prakan province began receding on Monday after being high enough to reach a car’s roof on Sunday.

The Department of Highways said that as of 9.30am, water levels on the Bang Na-Suvarnabhumi highway stood at 5 to 10 centimetres. Cars were able to drive down the highway and signs had been put up to assist the traffic.

According to Kom Chad Luek newspaper, water levels on Monday morning were about 30cm in some areas of the Bangpoo Industrial Estate. Many companies had to suspend work, and several used trucks to transport their workers out of danger. Though small cars could pass through some areas, flood levels were quite high in others.

On Sunday, Bangpoo Industrial Estate was under a metre of water, drowning many cars and motorcycles. People had to use paddle boats to get around, while many put sandbags in front of their homes to keep the water out.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said on Monday that floods had hit nine provinces and 316 households were affected.

Songkhla plans opening door to Malaysian tourists with ‘Dannok Sandbox’ scheme

Songkhla is planning to launch the “Dannok Sandbox” scheme to help boost the economy of Sadao district, which sits on the border with Malaysia.

Retail stores, restaurants, hotels and other businesses related to tourism in the area have been suffering badly from the impact of Covid-19 because 90 per cent of their customers are Malaysian tourists.

The private sector said the sandbox scheme was initiated because Malaysia has administered 31.8 million Covid-19 doses so far and is expected to cover 70 per cent of its population by October. The opening of the Sadao border is also in line with Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s plan to reopen Thailand by October.

“The scheme is called ‘Dannok Sandbox’ because Malaysian tourists visiting Sadao refer to the area as Dannok,” related businesses said.

“This border is the only road link with Malaysia, so it will be easy to contain the spread of Covid-19.”

Though the Dannok Sandbox is still at the planning stage, it is hoped the district will start bustling again under strict measures to tackle the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.

Before the scheme kicks off, all 30,000 or so people living in the area must be fully vaccinated and government agencies will have to complete feasibility studies.

Thailand’s daily caseload will drop soon, predicts Public Health Ministry

The Public Health Ministry said on Sunday that the number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand is likely to ease, as more patients with mild symptoms are being discharged from hospitals in Greater Bangkok.

Dr Kiatiphum Wongrajit, the ministry’s permanent secretary, cited Nonthaburi’s Busarakham Hospital, where the number of yellow and green patients had dropped 54 per cent from 3,526 to 1,905 cases last week.

Of the 300 beds available at the Nimibutr Sports Building in Bangkok, only 94 were occupied, of which 54 patients were in the green group, 34 in the yellow group and only six in the red group or in a severe condition.

Kiatiphum added that proactive tests conducted in communities, companies, markets and workers’ camps helped identify and isolate patients to curb the virus from spreading.

He also said the urgent inoculation of people at risk, such as seniors, those with chronic disease and pregnant women has helped cut down on infections and deaths caused by family clusters.

The doctor hopes the target of inoculating 70 per cent of this group in Dark Red provinces and 50 per cent in other provinces can be reached soon.

As of Saturday, 22,807,078 people had received their first Covid-19 jab, 7,287,885 their second shot and 584,326 their booster shot, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccines administered to 30,679,289.

He added that in a move to administer more booster shots, the Department of Disease Control will meet related agencies and come up with a plan to distribute 1.5 million doses of the Sinovac vaccine nationwide.
