Exporter selling counterfeit Thai durian to China arrested in Chanthaburi

The owner of a fruit-buying company in Chanthaburi province has been arrested by officers from Muang Chanthaburi police station and Chanthaburi Agricultural Research and Development Centre on Monday for allegedly using counterfeit Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certificates to export Vietnamese durians to China as Thai durians.

“We investigated a fruit-buying company called ‘Lung Tu Odd’ located in Khlong Narai subdistrict of Chanthaburi province and found that they had used fake GAP and GMP certificates to make durians that they had imported from Vietnam look like they were from Thailand before exporting them to Chinese customers,” Alongkorn Polabutr, adviser to the agriculture and cooperatives minister, said.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the company had imported over 18 tonnes of durians from Vietnam, which was sold at THB70 per kilogram and is planning to export to China at THB160 per kilogram.”

Alongkorn added that Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chalermchai Srion had ordered the Department of Agriculture to work with the police, Customs Department, the Department of Foreign Trade and Department of Special Investigation to further investigate the company’s network as well as other fruit counterfeiters in durian-growing provinces to prevent damage to Thai durian’s reputation in the global market.

“The ministry’s executives would meet this week to discuss setting measures to prevent fruit counterfeiting,” said Alongkorn.

Statistics from the Customs Department showed that in 2020 Thailand exported fresh durians valued at THB65.6 billion, up 44 per cent from the previous year, with China as the main market responsible for THB47.7 billion of durians, or 73 per cent of total durian export.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced on Monday that Japan has offered to donate AstraZeneca vaccines to Thailand.

He added that the agreement will be signed on Thursday and the shipment should arrive within July, though the number of doses was not disclosed.

“Japan’s donation is a token of friendship between the two countries. It will help Thailand with its supplies and give the vaccine rollout more flexibility. Japan is a major investor in Thailand, and after the Covid situation is resolved, investment and trade between the two countries will become stronger than ever,” Anutin said.

Anutin said the doses from Japan will be distributed as per the guidelines set by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration.

Batches are delivered to provincial communicable disease committees every week before they are allocated to each area.

Thailand has so far fully vaccinated 2.1 million of its 66-million population.

The arrests came after a Royal Thai Navy boat discovered two Vietnamese trawlers during its survey of territorial waters in the deep South.

The trawlers were escorted vessels to Narathiwat pier, where their crewmen were tested for Covid-19 by local health officials before being detained for questioning at Mueang Narathiwat Police Station.

All 10 crewmen were charged under the fisheries law.

Pro-democracy activists back on streets as charter-change bills go to Parliament

The Dern Talu Fah (Walk through the Sky) pro-democracy group launched a petition campaign in Khon Kaen on Monday, aimed at ousting the Prayut Chan-o-cha government.

Pro-democracy activists back on streets as charter-change bills go to Parliament

Led by law students from Khon Kaen University, campaigners gathered signatures on the road between Democracy Monument and Bang Lamphu Market under the close watch of police officers.

The move comes as Parliament is set to resume deliberations of draft bills to amend the junta-sponsored 2017 Constitution, which critics say was designed to prolong the military’s grip on government. Lawmakers will consider 13 draft charter bills over three days from tomorrow (June 22) to Thursday.

Dern Talu Fah’s campaign also enables people to submit their signatures in support of Constitution amendments. The pro-democracy movement has been largely dormant since pandemic restrictions were tightened in December.

“The Covid-19 situation in Khon Kaen has improved, so we are using this opportunity to create awareness among people,” a student from the group said.

The signature campaign will continue until Thursday when the group plans to hold an anti-government rally at 5pm.

“So far, we have over 1,500 signatures from people who support changes to the Constitution,” the student said. “We believe that good politics starts from good government.”

Thailand chose not to back UN motion on Myanmar as it is ‘unsustainable’ #SootinClaimon.Com

Thailand chose not to back UN motion on Myanmar as it is ‘unsustainable’

The Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Monday explaining why it abstained from voting for a United Nations General Assembly resolution related to the situation in Myanmar.

Thailand chose not to back UN motion on Myanmar as it is ‘unsustainable’

Ministry spokesperson Thanee Saengrat said the Kingdom withheld its ballot on Friday’s vote in New York because the resolution did not take into account the direct and indirect effects it will have on Myanmar and Thailand. He also listed the following points for the abstention:

• The resolution was created by countries that do not have close ties with Myanmar, unlike Thailand which must take each step carefully.

• The resolution does not take into account Myanmar’s history and situation before and after the February 1 coup. Thailand believes political conflicts are destroying the peace in the country and the only way out is to seek a peaceful solution, instead of condemning or doing things that may cause the conflict to expand.

• The resolution does not support Asean’s efforts to solve Myanmar’s situation in line with its non-interference policy.

• Thailand believes nobody can change the past, but the global community can build an atmosphere that draws all parties in Myanmar to the negotiating table, so there is no more violence and a future can be created without conflict.

• Thailand is more concerned about the people of Myanmar who are suffering from the conflict. Thailand also does not believe the UN resolution will lead to sustainable peace.

• Thailand wants peace to return to Myanmar and has no hidden agenda other than to bring all parties to the negotiating table because that is the only way to end the conflict.

Bangkok police gets ready for planned June 24 rallies

Metropolitan Police announced on Monday that it has prepared security teams to ensure safety on Thursday when anti-establishment groups plan to gather to mark the 89th anniversary of the 1932 revolution.

Bangkok police gets ready for planned June 24 rallies

The bloodless revolution led by Khana Ratsadon on June 24, 1932, marked the end of absolute monarchy in Thailand and turned it into a constitutional one.

Deputy Metropolitan Police chief Pol Maj-General Piya Tavichai said several pro-democracy groups have announced plans to hold rallies on Thursday:

• The Mooban Talu Fah (Village Through the Sky) group led by Chatchai Pairin will gather at the October 14 Memorial on Ratchadamnoen Road.

• Prachachon Khon Thai (Thai citizens) group led by Nititorn Lamlua and United People for Thailand led by former red-shirt leader will rally outside Government House.

• The Nonthaburi New Generation Network led by Jesada Sriplang will rally at Democracy Monument.

“We want to point out that people are still not allowed to hold gatherings under the state of emergency. Those who violate this law will face punishment. There is no exception for those who issue invitations via social media,” he said.

Piya added that police will also protect historic sites and structures as they will be difficult to repair if protesters destroy them.

“Since July last year, police has taken legal action against 150 protesters,” he added.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, meanwhile, has advised protesters to hold gatherings within the law.

40 divers rescue Thai reef from destruction by 800-kilo fishing net

A team of 40 divers have lifted an 800-kilogram fishing net that was strangling a coral reef near Ko Losin, an islet in the Gulf of Thailand off Pattani province.

The reef rescue mission began on Friday, led by divers from the Natural Resource and Environment Ministry and supported by the Royal Thai Navy, minister Warawut Silpa-archa said on Monday.

“The Royal Thai Navy deployed the HTMS Rawi coastal patrol craft, a patrol airplane and a helicopter as well as 15 officers and other equipment for the mission,” Warawut said.

The three-day operation ended in success on Sunday after a fishing net measuring 200 by 50 metres and weighing around 800 kilos was fished out of the sea.

“The ministry would like to thank everyone who helped in this mission, especially the IMAN Camera Facebook page owner who took underwater photographs of the fishing net, which led to the saving of Ko Losin’s coral reef,” the minister said.

Department of Marine and Coastal Resources director-general Sophon Thongdee added that the fishing net had covered about 2,750 square metres of coral, and after its removal, an area of about 550sqm was found to be damaged.

“About 10 per cent of the islet’s coral reef is suffering from bleaching while about 5 per cent was broken by the fishing net,” he said. “Other aquatic wildlife such as sea anemones, crabs and sea urchins were also crushed or tangled by the fishing net.”

The department is now seeking the owner of the boat that used the surrounding net to catch fish hiding in underwater rocks. “Using such nets that destroy coral reefs is a violation of Wild Animal Conservation and Protection Act of 2019 and punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or a 1 million baht fine,” Sophon said.

BAAC offers insurance for dairy cows, beef cattle

Cattle farmers can now insure their cows against accidents, natural disasters and several diseases, including the lumpy skin disease – which recently flared up in Thailand – thanks to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC).

BAAC offers insurance for dairy cows, beef cattle

The Livestock Department reported last week that lumpy skin disease had affected some 75,000 cattle in 62 provinces and killed 9,000. The disease, which cannot be transmitted to humans, lowers the cow’s milk yield, damages hide and can even kill in severe cases.

“The bank has partnered with insurance companies to make cattle insurance possible,” BAAC manager Thanarat Ngamwalirat said on Monday. “Southeast Insurance will insure dairy cows for a yearly premium of 810 baht per cow [including VAT and insurance tax]. The maximum coverage is 30,000 baht in case the cow dies from an accident, natural disaster or disease.”

The insurance deal covers dairy cows aged between 18 months and eight years that have a health certificate issued by a veterinarian.

“Insurance for cattle raised for their meat will be handled by Dhipaya Insurance and Syn Mun Kong Insurance. The premium is set at 400 baht per animal [including VAT and insurance tax], while coverage will last for six months at a maximum of 30,000 baht in case of death by accident, natural disaster or disease. Eligible cattle must be healthy, not exceeding 36 months old and already vaccinated against haemorrhagic septicemia and foot and mouth disease,” he said.

Only cattle farmers who have registered with the Livestock Department will be eligible for the insurance programmes.

“We hope this insurance will help mitigate losses for cattle farmers, especially with the ongoing outbreak,” Thanarat said.

Those interested can visit any BAAC branch or call (02) 555 0555.
