In a crackdown on Sunday, Mae Hong Son police arrested 53 foreigners for allegedly running a fraudulent investment scheme, the Royal Thai Police (RTP) announced on Monday.

RTP said police had learned of several foreigners entering Thailand illegally and setting up shop at the Ban Rak Thai resort in Mae Hong Son’s Muang district.

Locals notified police of the group over concerns they may be Covid-19 spreaders.

Police spent more than a month investigating the group before launching the raid. The police bureau said the group had booked the entire resort and even hired some locals to work as bodyguards.

Of the 53 arrested, 40 are Chinese nationals, 12 are from Myanmar and one is a Filipino. Police also seized more than 300 phones, computers and other assets.

Apart from fraud, 52 of the detainees were charged for entering Thailand illegally, while one was charged for overstaying.

Police also found cartons of cigarettes and decks of cards that had been smuggled into the country.

Public warned of false positive Covid tests by private labs

The Department of Medical Services has warned of false positive Covid-19 test results by private laboratories.

Public warned of false positive Covid tests by private labs

Dr Somsak Akksilp, director-general of the department, said on Sunday that currently many factories and organisations were using the services of private laboratories for screening new employees before accepting them for work.

“The department’s 1668 hotline is now overwhelmed with people calling in asking for hospital beds after testing positive for Covid-19 in these private labs,” he said. “In fact, these positive results could be false as these labs usually use rapid test or antigen test method, which is cheaper than the standardised RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) method, and also inferior in terms of accuracy.”

“The department’s 1668 hotline can allot hospital beds only to patients who have a confirmed result by RT-PCR method” he added.

“Patients who do not have one will need to be tested again after already wasting their time and money on the previous test. This eventually delays their hospitalisation, which could affect the overall treatment,” he said.

Somsak urged factories and organisations to use services of private laboratories certified by the department and make sure that they use the RT-PCR method to get an accurate result and to ensure that patients can be hospitalised immediately in case the result comes back positive.

The top official at the Interior Ministry has rescinded an order issued to provincial governors, asking them to arrange vaccination for the staff of Thai Beverage Pcl (ThaiBev).

Interior Ministry cancels order to governors calling for vaccination of ThaiBev staff, their families

Anews source revealed on Sunday that Interior permanent secretary Chatchai Promlert had withdrawn his order issued on June 17 calling for vaccination against Covid-19 for more than 70,000 employees and families of ThaiBev.

The original order was reportedly in response to an urgent appeal by ThaiBev on June 8, requesting vaccination to reduce the risk of spreading the disease to 43,201 employees and their 28,244 family members in 76 provinces and Bangkok.

The new order, however, told the provincial governors to ignore the previous order and adhere to the guidelines provided by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration in procuring and allotting vaccine to the public in each province with focus on comprehensiveness and no discrimination.

The new order also urged the governors to establish awareness and understanding with the private sector and the public regarding the province’s plans to prevent new Covid-19 cluster cases in each area.
