DITP launches safety campaign to boost global confidence in Thai tuna products

In a bid to boost confidence in canned and processed tuna from Thailand, the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) has kicked off the “Thailand Delivers with Safety” campaign.

DITP launches safety campaign to boost global confidence in Thai tuna products

Somdet Susomboon, DITP director-general, said the market for canned and processed tuna this year is expected to hit its target of 73.84 billion baht. He said this is possible thanks to the strength and readiness of the Thai workforce and international standard manufacturing technology.

Thailand also has the advantage of its prime location for buying tuna from around the world, while Thai operators also maximise their integrated supply chain network covering ingredient sourcing, manufacturing to distribution channels in the global key markets.

Despite Thailand’s internationally recognised potential and competitive advantage in the tuna industry, the government needs to ensure the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak doesn’t hurt the export industry further.

Hence, he said, DITP is joining forces with the public and private sectors to ensure the compliance of Covid-19 Prevention Best Practices in food products among manufacturers, exporters, business operators, raw material suppliers, as well as logistics operators. Such measures will be implemented in conjunction with new strategies for the export sector, which include increasing exports to new markets with high potential and expanding the production bases to target markets for tax benefits and logistics cost reduction.

In line with the new safety measures, business operators and suppliers are required to comply with the following:

• Intensify efforts to reduce the risk of contamination from ingredients and containers.

• Manufacturers must implement strict quality and safety controls throughout the production line, from receiving ingredients and storing in chilled room to processing, packing, cleaning and disinfecting the interior of vehicle containers.

• Monitor personal hygiene and work environment as well as the manufacturing buildings

• Cleaning and disinfecting machinery, manufacturing buildings, floors, walls, as well as common areas.

• Monitor the personal hygiene of workers before entering the building. Also, workers would be trained to protect themselves from Covid-19 to properly prevent any contaminations during operation.

As for the market overview in January 2021, Thailand exported 41,447 tonnes of canned and processed tuna marking a 6.59 per cent year-on-year growth generating up to 4.92 billion baht, or 6.37 per cent expansion compared to the same period last year.

The largest importers of Thai canned and processed tuna were the United States, Egypt, Japan, Australia and Canada, altogether accounting for 64.45 per cent, while the markets with high growth rates were Argentina (268.39 per cent), Malaysia (106.41 per cent), Egypt (83.92 per cent), Lebanon (70.92 per cent) and Israel (67.37 per cent).

The serious outbreak was discovered during proactive testing at the Italian-Thai workers’ camp on Soi Yai Phol, Chalermprakiat Chulabhorn Road.

Initial screening of 209 workers at the camp found 120 were infected with Covid-19. An additional 150 workers were then sent for hospital tests, which revealed another 76 infections.

The camp houses a total of 1,667 workers, all of whom will now be tested.

The infected workers have been sent to hospital, while the camp has been sealed as the workers undergo quarantine inside.

Bangkok accounts for almost half of the 64,891 cases in the third wave of infections that emerged from nightclubs in the capital last month. On Thursday, Thailand recorded 4,887 new Covid-19 cases and 32 deaths.

Universities can open from June 14

The government has given universities the green light to open from June 14 for the start of the academic year.

Universities can open from June 14

On Thursday, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation said universities could choose between onsite or online learning, or a mixture of both, according to their virus-prevention capacity.

Those that choose to open for onsite learning must adhere to strict Covid-19 control measures, it added. The ministry is working to create standards for online study to ensure learning outcomes are the same as from studying in lecture rooms.

Meanwhile, ministry secretary Duangrit Benjatiku said vaccination of personnel would help universities to open faster.

University chancellors around the country are keen to have all teachers, staff and students vaccinated before the semester starts. The ministry believes that although students are less likely to develop dangerous symptoms from Covid-19, they should still be vaccinated because they can transmit the virus to vulnerable groups.

Free internet for low-income Thai households in pipeline

Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Chaiwut Thanakhamanusorn has revealed progress on moves to widen internet access for Thais on low income.

Free internet for low-income Thai households in pipeline

Options discussed at a ministry meeting on Thursday included giving free internet access to poor households, Chaiwut said.

The ministry is waiting for approval to appoint a working group that will push the internet as a key tool for reducing socio-economic inequality, which has worsened during the Covid-19 crisis.

Chaiwut said that as well as daily communication and news updates, the internet enables people to register for government relief, purchase products, and make online payments. All these are impossible without an internet signal, which should be considered basic infrastructure, he added. The ministry was therefore pushing to make the internet a widely accessible public utility.

The plan is to reduce the cost of online access for people suffering financial burdens from the Covid-19 crisis, just as the government subsidises electricity and water bills for holders of state welfare cards, he said.

The stations, which offer vaccination and symptom-monitoring by medical staff, are being launched across the capital in a joint effort by City Hall and the Board of Trade.

The jabs are currently being administered to registered medical staff and at-risk frontline workers such as teachers, bus drivers and daycare centre staff before being rolled out to the general public in June.

Fourteen vaccination stations have been prepared in Bangkok at the following locations:

1. Central Plaza Ladprao (run by staff from Ramathibodi Hospital)

2. Central Plaza Pinklao (Vajira Hospital)

3. Iconsiam (Siriraj Hospital)

4. True Digital Park (Siriraj Hospital)

5. Samyan Mitrtown (Chulalongkorn Hospital)

6. SCG Bangsue (Department of Medical Services)

7. The Mall Bang Kapi (Nopparatrajathanee Hospital)

8. The Mall Bang Khae (Siam University’s faculties of medicine and nursing)

9. Thanya Park (Bangpakok Hospital Group – BHG)

10. Asiatique (BHG)

11. Robinson Lifestyle Latkrabang (BHG)

12. Tesco Lotus Minburi (BHG)

13. Big C Bangbon (BHG)

14. PTT Station, Rama II (BHG)

The Board of Trade will set up an additional 11 vaccination points to bring the total in Bangkok to 25.

Once up and running, the 25 points will be able to vaccinate 38,000-50,000 people per day.

All the vaccination points will operate for seven months in a bid to achieve herd immunity. Bangkok authorities are aiming to inoculate 70 per cent of city residents over the next two months.

Non Din Daeng police and officers from Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary rushed to the scene after being alerted to the accident at 3.30am.

The driver of the truck, Lampong Faikhao, told police he was transporting eucalyptus wood from Sisaket to Chonburi. He said the elephant appeared suddenly in front of the truck, making a collision unavoidable.

The elephant was able to limp away from the crash with an injured left rear leg, though extensive damage to the front of the truck indicated a high-impact collision. Sanctuary officials have called in veterinarians to examine the elephant.

Agency takes steps to help disabled people deal with Covid impact

The Committee for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities has come up with new measures to help the disabled deal with the impact of Covid-19 outbreak, deputy government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said on Wednesday.

Agency takes steps to help disabled people deal with Covid impact

“Those who have taken loans from the committee will be given a debt moratorium until March 31 next year,” she said. “The fund will also provide emergency interest-free loans of up to 10,000 baht per person. No guarantors will be required for this loan.

“Applications will be accepted until September 30 and the loan consideration process will take no more than two months from the application date,” she added.

The validity of ID cards held by persons with disabilities will be extended by another six months, so they don’t need to visit the relevant department to renew them.

“This measure will benefit some 50,000 people whose card is scheduled to expire this year,” she added.

The committee has also called on the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) to consider administering vaccines to disabled persons who do not meet conditions set by the government.

Covid-19 jabs are currently only being provided for people above the age of 60 and those with chronic conditions. There are some 800,000 disabled persons who do not fit the priorities, the committee said, but they should get vaccinated first due to their limited capability of movement.

“The committee is also planning to set up a field hospital that specializes in treating disabled people at the Thailand Science Park in Pathum Thani,” Ratchada said. “The facility will be equipped with special facilities and sign-language translators will also be on hand. There will be 220 beds.”
