Staff of Thai Airways International (THAI) will be vaccinated against Covid-19 from April 19, the airline has revealed.

THAI said it has collaborated with the Public Health Ministry to vaccinate 4,500 employees at and around Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The Sinovac jab will be given to staff in the customer service, ground maintenance, kitchen, commercial, merchandise, mail and mechanic departments operating at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Regarded as at-risk frontline staff, the 4,500 employees will get two doses of Sinovac vaccine, the first administered between April 19 and 25.

Meanwhile, THAI has established the “TG Centre for Covid Prevention” to monitor employee and customer hygiene measures following the fresh outbreak centring on Bangkok.

THAI will resume international flights to Phuket in July as part of Thailand’s trial reopening to international tourists.

Official refutes woman’s claim her child was turned away by four hospitals

An official from one of the four hospitals that allegedly refused to treat a 10-year-old Covid patient on Sunday said on the Aggressive Doctor Facebook page that the hospital had done their duty in line with medical ethics.

The official said the parents had admitted to visiting an entertainment venue and department store in Hua Hin, adding they later deleted an earlier Facebook post on their trip.

“After the child tested positive, we contacted different hospitals that may have available beds, but the parents refused our offer,” she said.

“They claimed to have money and said they preferred private hospitals where celebrities are treated,” the post read.

The official added that medical personnel also gave the parents advice on how to treat their child and to contact the 1668 Covid-19 hotline.

“The child’s mother posted her appeal on Facebook Live after leaving the hospital,” the official added.

The child’s mother went on Facebook Live to say her child had a high fever and that they had been turned away by four hospitals for different reasons, such as the “emergency room is closed” and the “wards are full”.

The post went viral and Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital decided to take the child in.

Thailand still a perfect stage for international films

NationalApr 12. 2021

By The Nation

As many as 26 foreign films have been made in Thailand in the first three months of 2021 and have generated Bt1.18 billion in revenue, Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Thani Saengrat said on Sunday.

He added that the film board is considering another four or five applications from film producers.

There are several reasons why Thailand is attractive to foreign filmmakers:

• Permission is granted very fast. If all documents are ready, approval is given within five days as the film board meets three times a week.

• Thai filming crew are skilled and have experience working with world-class filmmakers, especially from Hollywood. Thailand also has good quality studios and props, so shots of the New York subway, Japan’s Ginza district, a sci-fi set among others can all be shot easily.

• Thailand offers beautiful locations and great infrastructure.

• Plenty of incentives. If a production house invests more than Bt50 million, mostly uses Thai workers and promotes the image of Thailand, it can get cash rebates of up to 20 per cent.

Though the country is struggling under the new normal, the film industry is still generating income and maybe a strong driving force for economic recovery post-Covid-19.

BMA to accelerate vaccine drive to control outbreak as 659 test positive

NationalApr 12. 2021

By The Nation

Of the 8,060 people who were tested for Covid-19 during April 3-10, 659 have tested positive, 3,357 were negative and 4,044 results are awaited, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said.

The BMA has been conducting an active search operation among people involved with entertainment venues.

Chawin Sirinak, BMA deputy permanent secretary, said the authorities would vaccinate high-risk people and employees around Thong Lor’s entertainment venues to control the outbreak. He said it was one of the measures to prevent and control the spread of the epidemic, similar to giving Covid-19 vaccination to people at risk in the market and the communities surrounding the market in Bang Khae district.

The vaccination plan is in accordance with the resolution of the Bangkok Sub-Committee for the Management of Vaccination against Corona Virus Disease 2019 on April 5, after epidemiological experts informed them that one of the processes to control the spread of disease is vaccination because it reduces the chance of infection and symptoms when infected. However, this does not mean that people who take the vaccine will not get infected.

The BMA said it would vaccinate people in conjunction with other measures, such as disease investigation, isolation control, quarantine, surveillance of risk groups, proactive search for patients in endemic areas, etc.

Baht likely to weaken from sales of currency due to Covid-19 wave

NationalApr 12. 2021

By THE NATION

The baht opened at 31.49 to the US dollar on Monday, weakening from its close of 31.47 on Friday.

The Thai currency is likely to move between 31.25 and 31.65 this week and between 31.40 and 31.55 during the day, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Last week, economies across the world saw some recovery from expansion of the service sector, which surpassed observers’ expectations.

Poon suggested that investors monitor the US dollar trend, which could strengthen in line with the movement of US Ten-Year Treasury.

The market strategist forecast that some investors would reduce their baht holdings, due to the new Covid-19 wave in Thailand. Their move will weaken the baht, he added.

Airlines banned from selling food, drinks to passengers on domestic flights

NationalApr 12. 2021

By THE NATION

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has prohibited airlines from serving food and drinks to passengers on board planes flying domestic routes, except in emergency cases, with effect from April 13, in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The order, signed by CAAT chairman Suttipong Kongpool, also covers eating and drinking of food or beverages brought by passengers.

The decision came after a new wave was reported in Bangkok earlier this month, which quickly spread to several provinces nationwide.

The ban will be in effect until the situation improves or a new regulation is announced.

The CAAT also has prohibited the distribution of newspapers, magazines or any pamphlets to passengers on flights, except those related to safety, in order to minimise passengers touching surfaces that could spread the virus. Selling of souvenirs or duty-free goods in-flight is also prohibited.

Other measures that airlines need to follow include installing infrared thermal scanners for passengers and staff, enforcing the wearing of face mask at all times on board except in emergency cases, and following social distancing.

For flights that are longer than 90 minutes, the airline must reserve the last two rows of seats at the back to quarantine passengers suspected of being infected.
