Two Michelin-star restaurants resolve boiling conflict over search engine results

NationalMar 10. 2021

By The Nation

The hot tension between two of Thailand’s Michelin-star restaurants has cooled off after a conflict over search engine results.

Both Sorn and R-Haan restaurants have earned Michelin stars for years of fine dining, with Sorn specialising in southern food and R-Haan in royal Thai cuisine.

Despite their unique specialities, customers have been confused when making reservations online.

When searching for “Sorn”, “Sorn Bangkok” or “Sorn southern cuisine”, the first links that pop up suggest R-Haan restaurant even though Sorn is known for its specialty southern fare. Many have made a wrong reservation, thinking both restaurants are owned by the same person.

Executive chef and Sorn owner Supaksorn “Ice” Jongsiri took to Instagram to clarify the issue. However, his move promptly triggered legal action from R-Haan, with the latter suing Supaksorn for Bt50 million and requiring him to delete the post forthwith.

The conflict continued until the prosecutor ordered the case into mediation and urged them to settle the issue.

Celebrity chef and R-Haan owner Chumpol Jangprai subsequently came out to say the conflict has been resolved and apologised for being hotheaded, promising it will not happen again.

Netizens can continue to reserve a table at either Sorn or R-Haan as usual.

Road safety: free vehicle check-up before Songkran fest

NationalMar 10. 2021

By THE NATION

The Department of Land Transport has organised a “Free Vehicle Check-up for Road Safety” campaign in cooperation with auto service centres nationwide for both cars and motorcycles from March 10 until April 10, director-general Jirut Wisanjit said.

“This year’s Songkran holidays start as early as April 10 and last until April 15, and we estimate that a lot of people will travel by road to their hometowns or tourist attractions, which could result in a spike in the number of road accidents,” he pointed out.

“The ‘Free Vehicle Check-up for Road Safety’ activity therefore aims to urge owners to keep their vehicles in the best condition to prevent any accident and promote road safety for all.”

Under the campaign, vehicle owners can avail of free check-up services at participating service centres nationwide.

“The free check-up will cover up to 20 items, such as the brake system, tyre condition, wiper blade condition, motor oil leakage, lighting and signal systems, air filter and more,” Jirut said.

“Please look for the campaign banner in front of the service centre, which indicates that such an establishment is a partner under this campaign,” he said.

Besides checking the condition of your vehicle before setting out, the department also advises vehicle users to obey traffic laws, maintain legal speeds, wear a seat belt, do not consume alcohol and make sure to get adequate rest – at least 7-8 hours – before driving during the long holidays.

Thailand Post Distribution teams up with THAI to deliver vaccines

NationalMar 10. 2021

By THE NATION

Thailand Post Distribution (THPD) has joined hands with Thai Airways International Plc (THAI) to deliver Covid-19 vaccines via its vast country-wide logistics network.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday to cooperate in delivering Covid-19 vaccines to both domestic and overseas destinations.

“The THPD will use this opportunity of working with THAI to improve our logistics and warehousing systems as we aim to be certified under ISO9001 and the Good Storage Practice standards,” said THPD managing director Pheera Udomkitsakul.

“We also hope this campaign will expand into future cooperation between the THPD and THAI in selling and distributing foods and products of both companies to a wider audience,” he said.

Pheera said the THPD currently has a modern warehouse management system and has been operating cold storage warehouses of international standard, thus making it an ideal candidate in handling the delivery of drugs and medical supplies.

“Our delivery staff have been trained under GDP [good delivery practices] to ensure on-time deliveries and have received the Q-Mark certification, which has been issued by the Department of Land Transport as a service quality standard for truck operations,” he added.

Baht strengthens, but could weaken if investors offload EMC

NationalMar 10. 2021

By THE NATION

The baht opened at 30.75 to the US dollar on Wednesday, strengthening from 30.80 at close on Tuesday.

The Thai currency is likely to move between 30.65 and 30.80, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

He said that despite the baht strengthening in line with the dollar, the Thai currency is expected to fluctuate in a wide range or weaken again if investors offload more emerging market currencies (EMC).

Poon predicted that exporters would sell the dollar when the baht reached 30.80 per US dollar. Meanwhile, importers are likely to buy the US currency when the baht moves to 30.50. He said the baht could weaken to 30.90 at maximum.

He also predicted that it was possible the Thai currency would strengthen again if the dollar weakened and foreign funds flowed back into the Thai capital market.

SCB Securities meanwhile believes the baht will be supported by the weakened dollar today. Asian currencies will become more reliable for investors as businesses in the region gradually reopen.

The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry on Tuesday gave long-tailed macaques in Phetchaburi’s Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park a vasectomy in a bid to control their population and reduce the impact on surrounding communities.

“Long-tailed macaques live in a large pack in the park and usually damage the property of people living nearby and in Khlong Krasaeng, Ban Mo, Rai Som and Thongchai subdistricts,” said Yutthaphol Angkinan, adviser to the Natural Resources and Environment minister.

“Furthermore, there have been reports of the animals passing in front of oncoming vehicles and causing road accidents.”

Yutthaphol said the ministry’s campaign aims to reduce the conflict between people and monkeys and prevent incidents in which locals might unknowingly break the law as they handle the monkey problem on their own, as long-tailed macaques are a protected species under the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act.

“The best way to solve this problem is to keep the monkey population at a balanced level so they can coexist with surrounding communities,” he added.

Ministry debunks fake news of new GSB emergency loan

NationalMar 10. 2021

By THE NATION

The Digital Economy and Society Ministry has warned people against believing or sharing news and Internet posts claiming that the Government Savings Bank (GSB) has launched a new emergency personal loan of Bt10,000 per person, in which applicants must register via their mobile phones and repay at Bt400 per month.

“The ministry’s Anti-Fake News Centre contacted the GSB’s Organisational Communication Department to verify this information and was told it was false,” the ministry said.

“The GSB said the loan had been announced in 2020 to alleviate the financial burden of self-employed customers during the Covid-19 crisis, but the campaign has now ended,” it said.

“Please do not share such posts as they will only spread misunderstanding. To receive the latest information on GSB’s financial assistance, please contact the bank’s hotline at 1155 or visit its official @GSBSociety Facebook page,” it added.

A female Bryde’s whale and her calf appeared in Surat Thani’s Mu Koh Ang Thong National Marine Park this morning, treating observers to one of the most spectacular sights that the ocean has to offer.

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation said the colossal sea mammals were spotted cruising near the islands of Ko Rok and Ko Hin Taek.

The mother whale measured an estimated 8 metres in length and the calf about 6 metres. Department officials said the whales were probably the same ones spotted previously in late February.

Agencies have asked local fishermen and tourism businesses to avoid disturbing the animals.

Charges brought against tiger farm after grisly find

NationalMar 09. 2021

By The Nation

The operator of a tiger farm in Mukdahan province has been charged with illegally possessing three tigers that were seized in a raid by authorities last November.

The raid by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) uncovered grisly evidence of wildlife trafficking, including a severed tiger’s head and other tiger parts.

Somdit Thamwet, the operator of Mukda Tiger Zoo and Farm, has been charged with possessing protected wildlife without permission and making false claims to officials, the DNP said on Tuesday.

Rungnapa Phatthanawiboon, DNP deputy director-general, said DNA tests on three tigers seized from the farm showed they were not related to other tigers at the zoo.

She added that the zoo operator faces a prison sentence, fine or both if found guilty.

The Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand said the zoo, located close to the border with Laos, was being used as a holding facility for wildlife being smuggled into neighbouring countries.

Meanwhile, the probe into possible wildlife-trafficking at the zoo continues.

“The department is currently investigating the case of Vietnamese businessmen who were in contact with the zoo,” said Rungnapa.
