Ranont Thanoo-un, a member of the Royal Thai Volunteer Regiment, was awarded a cash prize after he got severely injured while trying to put out a forest fire in Chiang Mai’s Mae Wang district.

He was at the site with the rapid deployment team on Monday afternoon and broke his left wrist and leg when he slipped into a three-metre-deep trench. He was trying to put out flames on a steep slope.

He was initially taken to Mae Wang Hospital, where acting district chief Pongsak Karnduem met him to applaud his efforts and hand him his cash prize, the amount of which has not been revealed.

Ranont, who is also assistant village headman, was later transferred to Nakornping Hospital in Mae Rim district for surgery.

Chiang Mai leads global list of most polluted cities for three days running

NationalMar 09. 2021

By THE NATION

Chiang Mai was ranked as having the worst air quality in the world for three consecutive days on Tuesday morning.

At 11am, Chiang Mai topped the list of most polluted cities in the world on the Air Visual website, with its air quality index coming in at the very unhealthy level of 225 points.

Pollution in the northern city has worsened over the past three days due to smoke from forest fires. The haze is so bad that even the Doi Suthep mountain is not visible, though flights have been able to take off and land at Chiang Mai Airport.

As of Tuesday morning, there were 211 hotspots, 139 of which were in preserved forests.

The pollution-detection station found PM2.5 – particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometres – in Chiang Mai city at seriously unsafe levels of between 106 and 113 micrograms per cubic metre of air (µg/m3).

Thailand puts safe levels of PM2.5 at 50µg/m3, while the World Health Organisation sets it at 25µg/m3.

On Monday night, it took 45 forest officials four hours to put out a fire at Doi Ton Phung mountain in Mae Takhrai National Park. The fire damaged 35 rai of land and had been set by locals for hunting.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) on Tuesday revealed images from Aqua and Suomi NPP satellites taken on Monday showing smog caused by forest fires in the northern region of Thailand.

The smog was seen covering 17 northern provinces, with high concentration over Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son.

On the Aqua image, the red spots represent heat spots from forest fires in the North, while the blue spots are heat from forest fires in Myanmar. The GISTDA, which is under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, reported that as of Monday there were over 6,300 spots in Myanmar.

The Suomi NPP image revealed 1,737 heat spots in Thailand on Monday, 1,494 of them in the northern region. Mae Hong Son has the most heat spots with 465, followed by Chiang Mai at 355 and Lampang at 193.

“The monitoring of heat spots by satellites will help us plan relief measures especially in national parks, reserve forests and agricultural areas,” said the agency.

With temperatures predicted to hit 40 degrees Celsius this summer, here is some advice on protecting yourself from heatstroke.

Symptoms include confusion, altered speech, nausea or vomiting, rapid breathing and palpitation.

Here are five ways you can protect yourself:

• Wear loose clothes

• Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and reapply every two hours

• Drink plenty of fluids

• Avoid exercising or outdoor activities in the peak hours

• Take frequent showers during the day.

People should also be cautious of leaving children in cars or closed spaces.

Baht tipped to swing in a wide range in the short term

NationalMar 09. 2021

By THE NATION

The baht opened at 30.80 to the US dollar on Tuesday, unchanged from the last close on Monday.

The Thai currency is likely to move between 30.70 and 30.90, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Poon said the baht situation had not changed since last week. In the short term, the currency will fluctuate in a wide range, in line with the dollar.

Poon added that exporters had gradually sold the dollar, after the baht weakened below 30.50 to the US dollar. The baht will tend to stablise near 30.80 to the US dollar, he added.

In the future, he predicted that it was possible the Thai currency would strengthen again if the dollar weakened and foreign funds flowed back into the Thai capital market.

The strategist said that the market on Tuesday would monitor fluctuations in Asia, especially the sales of bonds in the long term.

Meanwhile, the Asian stock market would possibly be supported by the sales of cyclical and value stocks. And this would delay foreign funds flowing out of the region, as well as Asian currencies weakening.

Crocodile three metres long caught in Samut Prakan

NationalMar 09. 2021

By THE NATION

Muang Samut Prakan Police Station on Monday was alerted to crocodiles on the loose in urban areas of Soi Nokkaew 12 in Samut Prakan’s Thaiban subdistrict. They rushed to investigate the scene along with officials from Samut Prakan Fishery Department and Ruam Kusol Rescue Foundation.

Witnesses reportedly told officials that they saw two different crocodiles in the areas. The first one, about two metres long, was seen in a swamp near the entrance of Soi Nokkaew 12, while the second one was seen in a canal connecting to the swamp but about 100 metres from where the first crocodile was sighted. The second crocodile had been described as much bigger than the first one.

Police contacted experts from Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm, who later got on a boat to scour the canal and swamp for the crocodiles. They spent around two hours searching the areas and finally caught a crocodile using electrofishing.

“We used 220 volts of electricity to temporarily knock the crocodile out in the water,” said Somphob Ratdee, an expert from Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm. “After being knocked out, the animal could regain consciousness in about 5-10 minutes, so we needed to bring it on land and restrain its jaw before it woke up.”

The captured crocodile was three metres long. It is identified as a freshwater crocodile, aged around 10 years. It was later brought to Samut Prakan Fishery Department and kept in a holding tank while officials waited for the owner to come and pick it up.

Officials said they found no signs of any other crocodile, but urged villagers to keep an eye and contact them immediately if the animal resurfaces.

The Thai government marked International Women’s Day on Monday (March 8) by honouring 42 outstanding individuals, organisations and projects that have advanced the cause of women and equality.

Social Development and Human Security Minister Juti Krairirk presided over the awards ceremony, under the theme “Empower women and girls for equality, without violence”.

Among those awarded with International Women’s Day plaques were beauty queen-turned doctor Lalana Kongtoranin, Ramathibodi Hospital director Dr Renu Pookboonmee, and the ThaiPBS TV drama “Plai Cha Wa”, which focuses on women in the early Rattanakosin period.

The ministry also joined with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) to push more television programmes that promote the rights of children, youth, LGBT people, women and families.
