Five issues would affect the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index next week, an expert said on Sunday.

An analyst at Kasikorn Asset Management expected the SET to have support at 1,485 and 1,500 points, but resistance at 1,520 and 1,530 points.

The Royal Thai Navy has created a Facebook fanpage named “Thai Submarines” in order to inform the general public about the watercraft, which many people see as extravagance and a useless investment of the Navy, as well as a corruption channel of the military wing.

The Navy said that information and news on the submarines would be updated on the page, with an aim to show that they were more than a weapon.

It also added that a specific unit had been assigned to be in charge of this page.

Thai businesses in a tizzy as Myanmar staff, truck drivers abandon jobs to join anti-coup protests

Cross-border trade in Tak’s Mae Sot district has been disrupted as Myanmar truck drivers have struck work to participate in anti-coup protests, a news source revealed.

Fewer transport trucks were seen on Saturday in the 2nd Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge over the Moei River, which connects the city of Mae Sot in Tak province with the city of Myawaddy in Myanmar.

“Merchants near the border checkpoint said that many Myanmar truck drivers have temporarily stopped coming to work as they had gone to join protests in Myawaddy, while some said they won’t come back until democracy is restored,” said the source.

Protest in Myanmar

Myanmar’s military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government on February 2, claiming fraud in last November’s election that delivered a landslide win for Suu Kyi’s party. The coup has led to protests in several provinces of the country.

Suchart Treeratwattana, a Thai businessman who owns a factory in Myanmar, said that many of his Myanmar workers had taken leave to join the protests, leaving him severely short-staffed.

“Furthermore, many transport trucks have been stuck in Myanmar and could not return to Thailand due to road closures,” he said.

“If the situation escalates into a riot, I fear that it could heavily damage Thai businesses in Myanmar.”

Jakjai Chamaimas Watermelon Farm in Si Sa Ket’s Muang district held an auction event on Friday to sell its signature heart-shaped watermelons, aiming to raise funds for the Si Sa Ket provinicial hospital.

The event was held in cooperation with Tourism Authority of Thailand, Si Sa Ket Tourism Industry Council and Christina Sanitaryware Ltd, owner of the farm which grows heart-shaped organic watermelons in a greenhouse over a 1 rai (0.16 hectare) area.

The bidding price for the heart-shaped watermelons started at Bt50,000 each. Si Sa Ket MP Wiwatchai Hotrawaisaya offered the highest price at Bt100,900.

“I am giving this watermelon to my wife on Valentine’s Day,” he said, adding that the money would go to buy medical equipment for Si Sa Ket Hospital to treat Covid-19 patients.

Also participating in the bidding via telephone was action star Phanom ‘Tony Jaa’ Yeerum, a lead actor in “Monster Hunter” movie, who helped attract the crowd and added colour to the event.

Thanchanon Chatmethakul, managing director of Christina Sanitaryware, said that the company’s watermelon farm was pioneered by his mother, Chamaimas, who mastered the technique of growing watermelons in heart-shaped containers.

“Our watermelon is 100 per cent organic. It has a mild sweet taste and unique fragrance and could become one of Si Sa Ket’s signature products,” he added.
