POLICE YESTERDAY said they had arrested three suspected Muslim insurgents who had planned to launch bomb attacks in Bangkok.

Deputy Police Commissioner Pol General Sriwarah Rangsipramkul admitted that |the three suspects had earlier been freed by a Narathiwat court after being detained by the military before the police rearrested them.
Sriwarah identified the three suspects as Talmeshi Totalyong, 31, Abdullashi Luakraji, 19, and Mubahri Kana, 22. They are all residents of Narathiwat.
The three were earlier detained by soldiers who invoked the emergency law but the Narathiwat Court freed them on Tuesday.
Sriwarah said the three suspects were rearrested by police based on a Criminal Court warrant dated last Friday, adding that they were charged with possessing illegal explosives and unlawful association.
Early last month, police said they had learned of a plot to launch car-bomb attacks in Bangkok by insurgents from the deep South, although there were not any reports confirming attacks outside the southern border provinces, which insurgents claim are independent of Thailand.
Rights activists have criticised police for stepping up crackdowns on student activists in areas near Ramkhamhaeng University after the alleged bomb plot was announced.
Sriwarah spoke at a press conference at the Crime Suppression Division head office where the three suspects had been detained after their arrest.
He said he had questioned the suspects for three hours.
Sriwarah added that at least one of the three had confessed to a plan to launch attacks in Bangkok.
Sriwarah said police had obtained evidence that the three suspects had met and planned the attack in a room behind a mosque on Soi Ramkhamhaeng in Bangkok’s Bang Kapi, in rented rooms in Samut Prakarn and at a house in Narathiwat from September to October 17.

PEOPLE are preparing for the historic moment of the accession of King Rama X to the Throne with suppliers stocking up on portraits, T-shirts, flags and other symbolic souvenirs in anticipation of high demand.

National Legislative Assembly (NLA) President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai said he was waiting for a royal audience with HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn so that he could offer an invitation for the Heir to ascend the Throne.
Many school representatives from the provinces also headed to the capital yesterday to buy portraits of the Crown Prince as well as flags with the Crown Prince’s emblem. They are preparing decorations to celebrate the new King’s succession. It is a tradition in Thai households, private offices and government agencies to display portraits of the monarch.
“I’ve come here [Bangkok] to buy a portrait of HRH the Crown Prince to be placed in my school as a gesture of welcome to the new monarch,” said Chaikit Wutthivaree, 34, an employee of Panjawittaya Technical Training School in Pathum Thani province. He bought and transported an 80-centimetre by 120cm royal portrait back to the school by “tuk-tuk”.
Dozens of shops located near Wat Bowonniwet Vihara Temple, which have sold royal photographs and flags with royal emblems for decades, are selling increasing numbers of pictures of the Crown Prince.
However, photo wholesellers are still waiting for an official announcement of the new King’s emblem and the unveiling of the official portrait. Once that is known, manufacturing volumes will be increased to meet expected demand.
“Right now, we just sell the Crown Prince’s file photographs available in printing houses. We are monitoring news and updates closely regarding the official portrait and the new King’s emblem,” said Kanyanee Bawornbenjaphan, 60, an owner of a well-known royal photograph and flag shop.
The price of the Crown Prince’s portraits range from Bt30 to Bt9,000, depending on the size and quality.
Meanwhile, Bangkok’s schools and state organisations are waiting for an official announcement from the government before decorating their buildings to welcome the new King.
“We are getting prepared and are waiting for the Education Ministry’s instructions regarding the decoration to welcome the new King,” said Tossaporn Sangtitanu, the newly appointed director of Wat Saket School, a boys-only secondary school in Bangkok.
“It’s our honour to praise our new King. As we are Thais, we do love and revere the new monarch and the royal institution,” he said.
According to a source at the Education Ministry, the ministry and other government bodies are waiting for an announcement and orders from the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the PM’s Office regarding proper welcoming practices.
Besides photographs and flags, clothes with logos and messages to welcome the new King are also being stocked to meet the expected high demand.
“We have prepared thousands of white and yellow T-shirts,” said Anona Visaraton, the owner of a popular T-shirt wholeseller at Bo Bae market whose customers are mostly retailers in the provinces.
The owner said on Tuesday that when the NLA acknowledged the accession of the Crown Prince to the Throne, more than 5,000 white T-shirts were ordered following rumours that the government had called on all people to dress in white or grey.
The owner said that although Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam later denied the rumour, the demand for white and yellow – the colours symbolising the Crown Prince’s birthday – T-shirts was growing.

There was severe traffic congestion at Bangkok’s Ratchayothin intersection yesterday morning as a one-week trial closure of the overpass began.

THERE WAS heavy traffic congestion at the Ratchayothin Intersection in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district yesterday morning after its soon-to-be-demolished overpass was closed on a trial basis until Tuesday.

With the BTS Green Line project set to extend its route past this area, the overpass will be replaced by an underpass.
Amid the traffic jams, a large number of |commuters, including students and office |workers, resorted to travelling on foot, using |motorcycle taxis or shifting to other transport |services.
Many motorists were reported to have made U-turns to use Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road instead of passing through the intersection.
Lines of cars were stuck for hours on inbound Paholyothin Road, while a tailback on Ratchayothin Intersection reached as far as the Wongwian |Bang Khen. Vehicles on the outbound Paholyothin Road flowed more freely, although at a slower |pace.
There was also heavy congestion on the inbound Lat Phrao Road while the whole length of Soi Lat Phrao 48 was jammed with traffic. There was a knock-on effect in connecting streets such as Seri Thai and Srinakarin.
Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, meanwhile, said that the seven-day closure of Ratchayothin Intersection overpass was to allow people to adjust their travelling routines and avoid congestion before the structure is |eventually demolished.
He said officials would assess the situation after December 6 and proceed accordingly.
“I again confirm that we must demolish the |overpass because we also have to think of the Green Line project construction and other factors. If I had a hammer, the overpass would be brought down on December 6,” he said.
