The recently launched men’s collection from Moschino [tv] H&M is best described as bold, fearless, loud and fun.

The collection is true Moschino, whether it’s a down jacket covered in gold sequins, a black hoodie embroidered with gold chains, extreme oversized jeans, or one of the pieces with the iconic Moschino logo. Every look reveals Jeremy Scott’s deep love of Moschino’s heritage, and the fierce pop energy he’s brought to the brand since becoming creative director in 2013.

The collaboration is full of statement pieces that subvert ideas of cut and scale.

A black leather biker jacket is punctured with braided gold chains, and black leather biker pants boast hidden pockets at the knee. Meanwhile a hybrid jacket mixes together a blazer with a hoodie. It has zipoff lapels, a faux leopard hood, different coloured front panels and a back covered in silver sequins. Moschino believes in sequins for daywear, like a belowthewaist down jacket covered in gold sequins, or slimcut silver sequin pants that are perfect for partying.

It’s all about attitude, as demonstrated through Scott’s signature playful take on the streetwear pieces that have become today’s essentials.

A padded bomber jacket is printed with a repeat image of CDs, its hood like a peak cap that reads Moschino. A hooded anorak is printed with a clash of leopard print and Moschino, while a black hoodie is embroidered with multiple chunky gold chains. For hitting the street, oversized stonewash denim jeans have an extreme high waist and long fly, playing with codes and making a statement.

The Logo mania runs throughout the collection and as always there is the extra twist. For this collaboration, a brand new logo brings MTV together with Moschino capturing a pop culture moment, and is embroidered on organic cotton hoodies and Tshirts, organic cotton Tshirts or the waistband of boxer briefs in the classic leopard and chain print.

Scott is a cartoon super fan. He gives hiphop energy to some of Disney’s most iconic characters. Oversized patches of Mickey and his crew are embroidered onto a white organic cotton hoodie, while Mickey chills next to speakers on a black organic cotton Moschino logo sweatshirt. Donald Duck is DJing on a football jersey, his top highlighted with sequins, while a purple finely knitted sweater shows Goofy, face at the front and feet out the back of the jumper.

In its designs for the ladies, the brand’s mission is to play with fashion. Silhouettes are slashed; shapes are subverted; and pieces are punctured with humour and vivacity. The classic black leather biker is cropped to an extreme high, as is a cropped stonewashed denim jacket and a cropped red padded jacket. A stonewashed denim bustier is cut as if from the waist of a pair of jeans, while Moschino subverts the classic fake fur coat by puncturing a fuchsia faux pelt with gold chains, giving the coat punk energy.

A short black leather dress is total party starter: buckles as straps and a chunky gold zip running all the way down the front. Scott believes in the “haute hoodie”, and here he’s created a parka dress that’s entirely covered in silver sequins and is worn with a gold leather motorbike jacket punctured with gold chains. Be bold in a bustier entirely covered in rhinestones or hit the floor in a bra top of chain and leopard print with ribbing, which comes with matching briefs.

Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Narirattana dresses two beauty queens for tonight’s Thai Night Gala

HOSTED BY Thailand 13 years ago, the 2018 edition of the Miss Universe pageant returns to Bangkok this year with the lovely ladies taking to the stage for the finale on December 17.

And this year’s competition is being made even more special as Thailand’s most distinguished designer, Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Narirattana, is underlining her commitment to female empowerment with a collection of stylish swimsuits designed for the preliminary competition as well as two exquisite Thai silk dresses for tonight’s Thai Night Gala dinner.

The custom-made dresses will be worn by Miss Universe Thailand 2018, Sopida Kanchanarin and Miss Universe 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

The other 95 lovely ladies will also celebrate the host country by wearing traditional Thai costumes from 19 leading Thai designers using hand-woven silk created for The Support Foundation under the royal patronage of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of the late King Rama IX.

Thai silk has a unique lustre and its sheen comes from two unique blends – one colour for the warp and another for the weft – meaning that the colour changes when it is viewed at different angles and under different lights.

For this special night, Miss Universe Thailand 2018 Sopida Kanchanarin is wearing an elegant silhouette that draws on the gowns in the Sirivannavari Couture Collection inspired by the wardrobe of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. Combining mudmee and praewa silks, the dress incorporates a couture technique that requires skilled craftsmanship and meticulous handiwork to ensure that the identity of the fabric’s unique character shines through. A key detail is the peacock image — a symbol with double meaning as it represents both the Sirivannavari brand and the royal guarantee bestowed by the Queen on high quality Thai silk that the world can trust.

Last year’s winner, South African Nel-Peters, will make her entrance in another royally designed gown. This strapless two-piece is inspired by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s wardrobe and uses solid Thai silk combined with praewa silk. A draping technique is used for an effortless flowing effect with the long skirt created in a Greek style to showcase the unique beauty of the fabric.

For next week’s preliminary competition under the Sirivannavari brand, the Princess has created a collection of colourful swimsuits on the concept “Across the Universe”.

The palette reflects not only the Thai belief in the auspicious colour of the day ranging from red, yellow, pink, green, orange, blue, and purple but also represents the idea of a world united in harmony and peace.

The swimsuits themselves are both one and two piece and decorated with whimsical gold metal embellishment studs. A graphic of the Nebula-inspired pattern is displayed on the scarf.

Watches for the deep

Omega, the Swiss luxury watch brand with more than 170 years of expertise in horology, recently hosted a party at Central Embassy to mark the opening of the “25 Years of Omega Seamaster Diver 300M” event.

A favourite of professional divers since it debuted in 1993, and the perfect watch for world’s most beloved spy, James Bond, 14 unique models were launched at the event, six in stainless steel and eight in a mix of stainless steel and 18K gold.

The party was attended by many celebrities such as Pita Limjaroenrat, Preeyanuch Bulakul, Karatphet Issara, Chulalux Piyasombatkul, Ingfah Damrongchaitham, Yumi Kiangsiri, Navadee Mokkhavesa, Vasu Virajsilp, Barom Bhicharnchitr, Jarujit – Pimlert Baiyoke, ML.Korkrita Kritakara, Yanin Viravaidya, Jittima Wattanasin, Supachai Kanjanasakchai, and many more.

Tipanat Lenbury, country manager of The Swatch Group Trading (Thailand), explained that the exhibition “How the Seamaster Diver 300M Became a Legend” aimed to take guests back through the timepiece’s fascinating history.

In 1993, Frenchman Roland Specker achieved a world recordbreaking freshwater free dive to a depth of 80m in Lake Neuchatel. On his wrist, he wore the new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M, successfully testing it in a true deepwater environment.

In 1995, The Diver 300M became part of sailing history, when it was worn by several sailors of Team New Zealand, who achieved an unforgettable victory at the America’s Cup. One of Omega’s most exciting and enduring partnerships began when James Bond strapped on a Seamaster Diver 300M for the first time in “Golden Eye”. The spy and his watch became synonymous and sales of the timepiece soared.

In 1997, The Seamaster Diver 300M proved that is was not just a watch for diving, when it was advertised as the preferred choice of international sports stars including the swimmer Alexander Popov and tennis champion Martina Hingis.

2006 brought a new James Bond, but the same iconic watch, with Daniel Craig wearing the Seamaster Diver 300M when he burst onto screens in “Casino Royale”. The trusty timepiece was now in its 5th 007 film.

Omega unveiled a complete facelift of this famous watch in 2018. Now sized at a larger 42 mm, each new Diver 300M has been given a Master Chronometer Calibre 8800, the Metasapproved movement instantly taking the collection into a higher realm of precision, performance and magnetic resistance. Every detail of the outward design has also been rethought, including the iconic diving bezel, which is now made from ceramic with the diving scale in Ceragold or white enamel (for longerlasting whiteness and durability).

The dials are also made from polished ceramic and are available in black, blue or sunbrushed PVD chrome colour. Most notably, Omega has reintroduced the wavy pattern (now laserengraved) that was a popular feature of the original design.

Finally, each model is presented on a traditional iconic metal bracelet or an integrated black or blue rubber strap. The metal bracelets feature a new ergonomic design and have been closely integrated to the case.

Unesco adds reggae to its global cultural heritage list

REGGAE MUSIC, whose chill, lilting grooves found international fame thanks to artists like Bob Marley, on Thursday won a spot on the United Nations’ list of global cultural treasures.

Unesco, the world body’s cultural and scientific agency, added the genre that originated in Jamaica to its collection of “intangible cultural heritage” deemed worthy of protection and promotion.

Reggae music’s “contribution to international discourse on issues of injustice, resistance, love and humanity underscores the dynamics of the element as being at once cerebral, socio-political, sensual and spiritual,” Unesco said.

“While in its embryonic state Reggae music was the voice of the marginalised, the music is now played and embraced by a wide cross-section of society, including various genders, ethnic and religious groups.”

The musical style joined a list of cultural traditions that includes the horsemanship of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, a Mongolian camel-coaxing ritual and Czech puppetry, and more than 300 other traditional practices spanning from boat-building and pilgrimages to cooking and dance.

Jamaica applied for reggae’s inclusion on the list this year at a meeting of the UN agency on the island of Mauritius, where 40 proposals were under consideration.

Reggae was competing for inclusion alongside Bahamian strawcraft, South Korean wrestling, Irish hurling and perfume making in the southern French city of Grasse.

Reggae emerged in the late 1960s out of Jamaica’s ska and rocksteady styles, also drawing influence from American jazz and blues.

It quickly became popular in the United States as well as in Britain, where many Jamaican immigrants had moved in the post-WWII years.

The style is often championed as a music of the oppressed, with lyrics addressing sociopolitical issues, imprisonment and inequality.

Reggae also became associated with Rastafarianism, which deified the former Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie and promoted the sacramental use of ganja, or marijuana.

The 1968 single “Do the Reggay” by Toots and the Maytals was the first popular song to use the name.

Marley and his group the Wailers then soared to fame on classic hits like “No Woman, No Cry” and “Stir It Up”.

Peter Tosh, a core member of the Wailers, established a successful solo career with hits including “Legalise It,” while Desmond Dekker also enjoyed international success with the song “Israelites”.

Toots and the Maytals rose to prominence with “Pressure Drop” and Jimmy Cliff became an international sensation with “The Harder They Come”, also the title of a 1972 movie he starred in.

The reggae sound, with its heavy bass lines and drums, has influenced countless artists and inspired many genres including reggaeton, dub and dancehall.

The steady beats and smooth grooves have also proven key to hip-hop: Sister Nancy’s anthem “Bam Bam”, for example, has been heavily sampled by superstars like Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, Chris Brown and Jay-Z.

While largely symbolic, inclusion on the Unesco cultural heritage list can serve to raise the profile of the country and the practice.

“Reggae is uniquely Jamaican,” said Olivia Grange, the Caribbean island nation’s culture minister, before the vote.

“It is a music that we have created that has penetrated all corners of the world.”

A story steeped in augmented reality, the new Netflix series “Memories of the Alhambra” has all the ingredients to become a global hit

It’s not only K-pop that has made South Korea famous around the world. The country’s TV dramas too have been wowing audiences as far afield as China and the US with romantic comedies, modern and period pieces, action and horror all in the mix.

Now they are bringing yet another new element to the small screen with the release on Netflix of the augmented reality drama “Memories of the Alhambra”, which debuted this weekend in South Korea and is showing the world over.

Starring Hyun Bin and Park Shin-hye, “Memories of the Alhambra” is centred on Yoo Jin-woo (Hyun Bin), the chief executive of an investment company holding company who is attempting to win the rights to a video game. He travels to Granada, Spain in search of the mysterious creator of this innovative augmented-reality (AR) game, young programmer Jung Se-joo (Park Chan-yeol from K-Pop boyband EXO), and ends up at a hostel owned by former musician Jung Hee-joo (Park Shin-hye) and dons his company’s innovative “smart lens” to play the game.

The story is written by the acclaimed scriptwriter Song Jae-jung, who has won praise for bringing fresh ideas to Korean drama. Her previous hits include “Nine: 9 time times travel”, where she plays with the idea of time travel when the key character obtains 9 incense items, which allows him to go back 20 years in time. In “W”, she tells the story of a super wealthy man who exists in the webtoon “W”, and a woman who is a surgeon in the real world.

The series is directed by Ahn Gil-ho of “Strangers” fame, whose realistic directing style is in direct contrast to the writer’s fantasy plot.

“We wanted to make it as realistic as possible. So rather than use too much computer graphics, we’ve based it in reality,” says the director. “The most difficult part about expressing AR is how you are going to execute it. AR is different from virtual reality so it had to be very real and when we did use CG, we had to find the right point to put these together.”

In the first two episodes, the audience is introduced to the world of AR through Jin-woo as he starts playing the game for the first time.

For the 16-episode series, the director has again opted for non-linear storytelling just as he did in “Stranger”, with details and secrets revealed in jigsaw form then pieced together in a way that keeps the audience glued to their seats.

But Ahn Gil-ho is quick to insist that while “Memories” is full of new technological elements, it doesn’t have a complex plot that non-gaming audiences would find hard to follow.

Netflix Photo

“It is a future technology so there’s a fantasy factor at play. The AR game is just a topic that we use in the drama but it doesn’t play the biggest part. We try to explain the story through the acting. Also, it is not just about a game; there’s romance in there too,” he explains.

“The idea was to bring this fantastic script to life and the actors achieved that. I think everybody will imagine it playing out in their own way,” he adds.

The title refers to the Alhambra palace and fortress complex in Granada, Spain and it is there than the AR game takes place.

“Why Spain? Historically speaking, Granada has an Islamic backdrop as well as traditional Spanish culture and those two factors make it a very unique city. Its medieval feudal scenery is the perfect match to the game backdrop of our story,” he says.

“I’ve never worked with augmented reality before and I was really curious to see how it would actually come out after all the post production work and CGI had gone into it. I guess curiosity really drove me to participate in this project,” says Hyun Bin, who has been away from TV dramas for the last three years. The actor, who reached the height of his fame in “Secret Garden” back in 2011, has preferred feature films to TV dramas since coming out of the army, starring in “Confidential Assignment”, “The Swindles” and Rampant”.

Director Ahn Gil-ho/Netflix Photo

Park Shin-hye of “Doctors” fame has also been away from small screen dramas for two years.

“I put a lot of thought into my next project, asking how I could rediscover myself. AR was a new topic for me and it wasn’t simply a matter of playing a game. It’s not like just an arcade game. I thought there was a message within and I could really connect to the script, which addresses some social issues as well. Also the character I play, she’s very human and very warm,” says the actress.

“Gaming is an industry that is loved the world over. It’s cultural content that everybody in the world really enjoys and we melted this into the narrative of the drama to make it more fun. We made a conscious effort to ensure that people who don’t play games can follow our story and I think we have created a world where they feel like they’re really enjoying a game,” says the director.

Actor Park Hoon plays Cha Hyung-seok, the chief executive of IT company New World. A former school friend of Yoo Jin-woo, he co-founded Jaywon Holdings.

“My company makes a smart lens that you wear when you log into the game. In fact, that’s how you start playing: your put these smart lenses into your eye and people who aren’t accessing it via the smart lens don’t see what’s going on in the game. I had to really use my imagination to play it. For example, I’m fighting a certain character with certain weapons that can only be seen through the lens so while I can see what’s going on, people will look at me and wonder what’s wrong with me. That means we had to shoot from many different angles so that the audience is seeing what’s going on from my perspective and from the perspectives of others,” the actor explains.

He adds that time constraints complicated the shoot somewhat. “We were overseas and needed to repeat the shoots as many times as possible within a limited amount of time and that was quite difficult. I found it awkward at first but when I started playing the game, my acting levelled out and things improved. I’m at a very high level right now in terms of game acting capability,” he adds with a smile.

“The series has a lot of fantasy-based scenes and that makes it difficult to relate it to most Korean dramas. Yet I think we have found a Korean chord in explaining this fantasy world. The shifting relationships between the characters is also interesting,” says Park, who appeared in “Descendants of the Sun” as a smart solider in the squad of Captain Yoo Si-jin (Sung Joong-ki).

K-pop idol Park Chan-yeol, who plays programmer Jung Se-joo, was recommended by actress Park Shin-hye and Ahn Gil-ho found him particularly suited to the role.

“He’s a great actor and he has the image that really goes with Chan-yeol’s character. He connects all the characters together but that’s all I’m revealing,” laughs the director.

And of course the fact that he is a member of a superstar band is going to draw his fans all over the world to tune in.

The drama started shooting in May and the final scenes are now being shot. Ahn Gil-ho says the post production work on the visual effects is still to be completed.

He admits that it is a burden to live up to expectations after his acclaimed “Stranger”.

“‘Memories of the Alhambra’ is completely different from ‘Strangers’, the direction is different, the overall story and the style are different.

“We’ll be competing with a lot of other Netflix content but I think we have our own unique colour. Song has written a very tight story with solid characters and our actors have expressed it in a very immersive manner so I think it will capture audience attention on the global stage,” he says.

Filmed entirely in Taiwan with an all-Taiwanese cast, the second season stars Kuo Shu-Yao as she reprises her lead role as Xiao Zhen, alongside new cast members including two-time Golden Bell Award-winning actress Wen Chen-Ling (“The Last Verse”) and rising star, Fandy Fan (“HIStory”).

The eight-episode second season of “The Teenage Psychic” is scheduled to premiere in 2019 and will be available across Asia on HBO GO, HBO, and HBO On Demand.

“We are delighted that the first season of “The Teenage Psychic” was well-received in the region and even received the prestigious recognition at the Golden Bell Awards in Taiwan. It was an obvious decision for us to renew the series for a second season – the show absolutely deserves it,” says Jonathan Spink, chief executive of HBO Asia. “We are always looking for opportunities to produce more local language productions such as ‘The Teenage Psychic’ and working with local talents and crews across Asia.”

The new season of “The Teenage Psychic” continues with Xiao Zhen trying to lead a typical teenage life while going through high school. Meanwhile, Xiao Zhen’s beloved drama club is also facing the possibility of being shut down with news of her best friend relocating overseas with her family and reducing the number of members in the club even further. Juggling the multiple pressures from school, the drama club and the demands of the spirit world, things are about to take a turn for the worse for the 17-year-old.

New cast members for season two include award-winning actress, Wen Chen-Ling, who plays Zhan Xiao Tong, a neglected student with low self-esteem. Receiving encouragement from Xiao Zhen, Xiao Tong joins the drama club and discovers her talent for acting. As her life begins to turn around, she soon finds herself faced with more challenges. Also joining the cast is Fandy Fan who plays Zhang Yu Xuan, a sickly teenage boy who is raised in a restricted and overprotected environment. Unhappy to remain silent, Yu Xuan is determined to take control of his own life and escape the constraints of his upbringing.

“The Teenage Psychic” season two will be directed by up-and-coming director Liu Yan-Fu (“Life List”). Chen Ho-Yu, director of “The Teenage Psychic” season one, will executive produce.

The first season of “The Teenage Psychic” told a coming-of-age story that revolves around a teenager who just wants to lead a typical teenage high school life. Born with the ability to see spirits, her life will never be normal. Throughout the series, she had to juggle the pressures of teenage life – first love, academic success and peer pressure – with the demands of the spirit world.

“The Teenage Psychic” season one clinched the coveted Best Mini-Series (TV Movie) award and Best Supporting Actress in a Mini-Series (TV Movie) award for Nana Lee at Taiwan’s 52nd Annual Golden Bell Awards 2017 and received two nominations at the 22nd Asian Television Awards 2017 for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Chen Mu Yi and Best Cinematography.

“The Teenage Psychic” has also inspired HBO Asia’s one-hour original Mandarin documentary, “The World Behind The Teenage Psychic”, which explores how the distinct blend of Taoist, Buddhist, Chinese folklore and indigenous belief systems continue to flourish in modern Taiwan. “The World Behind The Teenage Psychic” premieres on Sunday, December 16 at 7pm on HBO. The documentary will also be available on HBO GO via AIS Play and AIS Playbox.

Twenty-eight per cent of Thais travelled overseas on their own in the past two years, more on average than other nationalities in the Asia-Pacific region and the world as a whole.

That finding comes from Visa’s Global Travel Intentions Study, for which 17,500 travellers in 27 countries were surveyed.

The study found that those most likely to travel solo (45 per cent) were the youngest group, 18 to 24 years old, and those combining business and leisure (“bleasure”).

Travellers aged 36 to 44 were more likely to travel with other people (71 per cent).

“The development of technology allows travellers the ability to take trip planning and booking into their own hands,” says Suripong Tantiyanon, country manager for Visa Thailand. “In addition, payment technologies and innovations give them greater convenience, security and confidence to spend during their time abroad.”

When travelling with companions, bigger groups are common. Typically, a group consists of up to five people on average.

Those travelling with others are most likely to be accompanied by their spouses and partners (49 per cent) or friends/colleagues (42 per cent). Travellers aged 45 years old and above or “superboomers” (72 per cent) are more likely to travel with their family and friends throughout the whole trip.

When it comes to travel activities, travellers from Thailand differ from their Asia-Pacific counterparts. The top three activities for Thai travellers are tours and attractions (71 per cent), food and dining (69 per cent), and shopping (68 per cent).

On the other hand, top activities for Asia-Pacific travellers are food and dining (73 per cent), shopping (69 per cent), and tours and attractions (64 per cent).

Some of the key activities Thai travellers engage in are visits to cultural locales (52 per cent), visits to theme parks and attractions (34 per cent) and religious monuments (29 per cent).

When it comes to food and dining, Thai travellers opt for eating at local casual and small restaurants (39 per cent) and tasting the street food (30 per cent).

Shopping for Thai travellers is all about venues that carry a range of brands and products, at duty-free shopping at destination airports (34 per cent) and large and medium retailers (33 per cent), and small retailers (30 per cent).
