Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons, considered one of the most talented of his generation, will leave Calvin Klein less than three years after joining it, parent company PVH said Friday.

“Both parties have amicably decided to part ways after Calvin Klein, Inc. decided on a new brand direction which differs from Simons’ creative vision,” the company said in a statement.

The arrival of Simons in New York in August 2016 after four years at Dior caused a sensation: he had the title of chief creative officer, with vast powers to revitalize the American brand, which relied on him to boost the profits of its high-end collection.

But there has been speculation since November about his potential departure, after an official from PVH apportioned him some of the blame for declining sales.

PVH did not specify when Simons would leave, but according to The New York Times, his departure is immediate even though his contract expires in less than six months.

No details have been given as to who will replace him or what he will do after his departure.

During his short stint at Calvin Klein, Simons garnered praise from the fashion world for his innovative collections, and he has received three awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

New group seeks to bridge two of South Korea’s biggest cultural exports

There is a new girl group in the K-pop scene. Billing itself as the very first “e-sports girl group” in South Korea, Aqua hopes to incorporate gaming into the growing music scene.

At first glance, the six-piece group consisting of Hyeonju, Sua, Haesol, Seungji, Sihyeon and Hyerim looks like a typical K-pop idol group.

But with the novel concept of e-sports, the group is already gaining attention, including from gamers, since its debut single with the fitting title “Log In” was released in November.

(KRAZY Entertainment’s YouTube channel)

Aqua has largely stuck to its concept so far, appearing at a gaming event organized by its agency and game developers Actoz Soft and Kakao Games earlier this month.

Furthermore, the group’s manager is a former professional gamer specializing in “StarCraft II,” whose current job entails overseeing the act’s dance and singing practices as well as game coaching.

(KRAZY Entertainment’s YouTube channel)

In an interview clip uploaded on the group’s official YouTube channel, the bandmates were seen immersed in a first-person shooter game. Another video featured their visit to G-Star 2018, the country’s largest gaming event.

When the group was unveiled in early November, Actoz Soft CEO Guo Habin said professional gamers are now enjoying as much popularity as celebrities and that AQUA marks a “new business direction” that mixes gaming and entertainment.

(Actoz Soft)

In the same month, virtual K-pop group K/DA, created by Riot Games, released its debut single “Pop/Stars,” which featured the voices of (G)-IDLE’s bandmates Miyeon and Soyeon, indie-pop singer-songwriter Madison Beer and vocalist Jaira Burns.

The K-pop-tinged tune topped Billboard’s world digital song sales chart soon after its release, and the video for the song has been viewed over 120 million times as of Thursday.

(Riot Games)

Both the gaming and K-pop industries contribute to the South Korean economy.

South Korea was the fourth-largest video games market this year, generating over 5.7 billion won ($5.1 million) in revenue, according to data from market intelligence Newzoo,

A recent study published by the Hyundai Research Institute this week estimated that K-pop sensation BTS is worth over $3.6 billion per year to the country’s economy, as it boosts the brand image of South Korean products abroad.

There’s food, art, fun and great weather too at the annual Jim Thompson Farm Tour

BANGKOK MIGHT have enjoyed an all-too-brief spell of colder weather last week but up in the Phayaprab foothills of Nakhon Ratchasima’s Pak Thong Chai district, the cool breezes are once again blessing the crops of vegetables and flowers that make Jim Thompson Farm such a delight to visit.

Like every December, the farm has once again opened its gates to welcome visitors for an agro-cultural tour devoted to sustainable living and the Isaan way of life. Continuing until January 6, the tour also offers visitors the chance to learn about the intricate silk production that makes the farm’s namesake a household name all over the world.

The observation tower is surrounded by a field of yellow blooms.

Slightly more than three hours by car from Bangkok, the farm was originally created to raise silkworms and the mulberry bushes on whose leaves they feed. It was developed as a tourist attraction in 1999 and in the last two years alone has attracted almost 500,000 visitors –270,000 in 2016 and 170,000 in 2017.

The theme changes every year. Last year, it was “Ter Toen Wen Wang” (Rushing Water – the Life Force of Isaan) to showcase water’s vital role as a natural resource and a core component of northeastern traditions and beliefs, This year, with “Zap Nua Huamuan: Happy Flavours”, the focus is on Isaan culinary delights and fun spirit for which the region is known.

Different Isaan-style delicacies are on offer.

In the Isaan dialect, zap nua refers to something that is pleasingly tasty while huamuan means bursting into laughter and joy.

“Issan food is chosen as the main theme this year because it’s not just tasty but also narrates the way of life, cultures and traditions. Visitors can discover more about Issan people through their cuisine, such as how they forage for the ingredients, the tools they use, the cooking techniques and what they use to preserve their food,” says Chutima Dumsuwan, Jim Thompson’s communications director.

Grilled chicken is a local favourite and best enjoyed with sticky rice and som tum.

“Many delightful attractions and activities are also arranged for people of all ages. This year, the weather is very nice and the flowers are in full bloom, making the farm an ideal place to relax and have fun.”

The clear sky, cool breeze and stunning vista of flowers as well as colourful organic fruit and vegetable orchards are inviting enough for people to return year after year. Everywhere I look, a visitor is holding a camera or a mobile phone and I find myself taking evasive action to avoid photobombing someone else’s shoot.

The most popular place to take photos at Jim Thompson Farm is the 50-rai pink cosmos field.

The tour of the 600-rai farm starts at its famous 50-rai field of pink cosmos, this year also boasting six site-specific installations by celebrated female artist Pinaree Sanpitak for the “Art on Farm” project that sees the farm inviting guest artists to create works revolving around the tour theme.

Titled “Breast Stupa Topiary”, six structures of steel rebars are created in form of a breast and are entwined with vines of edible plants such as butterfly pea, gac fruits, and ivy gourd.

Pinaree Sanpitak’s site-specific works “Breast Stupa Topiary” are created in breast form and entwined with the vines of edible plants.

For more than two decades, Pinaree has used aspects of the female form as gender metaphors that are both universal yet deeply personal. Breasts become temple stupas, then morph into cooking pots.

Her 1996 installation “Confident Bodies” involved an array of rather scary female torsos sculpted from saa (mulberry) bush fibre. Breast-shaped baking moulds and other cooking vessels continue to pop up (or out) in her ongoing “Breast Stupa Cookery” project that has guest chefs

and artists finding ways to fill out the aluminium and ceramic mammaries.

On the opening day of the farm on December 8, Pinaree collaborated with noted chef Weerawat Triyasenawat of Samuay & Sons restaurant in Udon Thani in holding a special dinner for invited guests. Pinaree created a set of ceramic dinnerware inspired by the form of the breast and chef Weerawat took diners on his culinary journey by adopting a modern take on traditional Isaan fare, with an emphasis on indigenous, sustainable, seasonal and foraged produce.

Pinaree’s installation art “The Mats and the Pillows Jim Thompson Farm” invites visitors to enjoy a short nurturing nap.

At the central pavilion of the Isaan Village is another of Pinaree’s installations titled “The Mats and the Pillows Jim Thompson Farm” featuring mats made out of defective yarns from Jim Thompson’s production and khid pillows made by craftsmen from Maha Sarakham province. These mats and pillows are laid out for visitors to take a rest and recall her previous puffy organza breast cushion “Noon Nom” (Resting on the Breasts), which also encouraged the viewer to enjoy a short nurturing nap.

The popular spots on the farm are, as ever, the pumpkin patch and the observation tower shaped like a traditional bamboo water jar, both of which are surrounded by a sea of yellow dao krajai, dao rueng farangsed, and soi gai blooms.

The rice field forms the backdrop to a cluster of Isaan-style wooden houses.

A cluster of Isaan-style wooden houses with its backdrop of rice fields isn’t just candy for the eyes but this year serves as the central spot in hosting an array of activities related to Isaan cuisine, among them the health benefits of local dishes, the foraging technique, and the local diet that includes freshwater snails, tadpoles, frogs, and insects. A variety of Isaan foods prepared by many eateries are also provided.

The new attraction is an 80-year-old triple roller mill machine that mills grains grown on the farm.

The new on-site attraction is an 80-year-old triple roller mill machine that still functions and mills grains grown on the farm. It also supplies jasmine and sticky rice to the Spirit restaurant by Jim Thompson in downtown Bangkok.

Visitors can enjoy a relaxing boat ride along the reservoir to Jim’s Market.

Visitors can enjoy a recreational boat ride or a journey by bamboo raft on the reservoir to Jim’s Market, which offers a wide range of goods from silk apparel and accessories, agricultural products and processed foods, all of which make great festive season gifts.

ISAAN DELIGHTS

The Jim Thompson Farm at Pak Thong Chai district, Nakhon Ratchasima province is open to the public daily until January 6 from 9am to 5pm.

Admission on weekdays is Bt180 (Bt130 for children), and Bt220 (children Bt160) on weekends. Senior citizens pay Bt90.

Thiago Silva became the latest Paris Saint-Germain player to have his property robbed during a match, police confirmed on Sunday.

Robbers broke into the Brazilian’s home in the upmarket 16th arrondissement of Paris while he was playing in PSG’s Ligue 1 match against Nantes at the nearby Parc des Princes.

The thieves are believed to have got away with items worth hundreds of thousands of euros.

Last month, burglars broke into the apartment of striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting while he was in action for PSG against Liverpool in the Champions League.

On that occasion, a police source said, the thieves escaped with loot worth around 600,000 euros ($682,000), mostly in jewels and handbags from the FLAt near the Parc des Princes.

In December 2017, the Paris apartment of then PSG coach Unai Emery, now at Arsenal, was burgled as his team played Strasbourg in the French Cup.

Pochettino focused on Spurs success after hitting Everton for six

Tottenham Hotspur showed why manager Mauricio Pochettino is a wanted man by thrashing Everton 6-2 at Goodison Park on Sunday to close to within six points of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Spurs have had to cope with the unwanted attention of Pochettino being linked with the Manchester United job following Jose Mourinho’s sacking this week.

But they showed no signs of being distracted as they roared back from a goal down thanks to doubles from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen also on target.

“There is a lot of rumours but our job is Tottenham and we have to be focused to try to be successful,” said Pochettino.

Fatigue may yet still derail Tottenham’s bid to win a first trophy under Pochettino with Spurs still involved in four competitions.

But with Liverpool facing Arsenal and Manchester City in a top-of-the-table clash in their next three games over the festive period, Tottenham have the opportunity to haul themselves into a three-way title race if they maintain the standards set at Goodison.

“Football is about being consistent. If we are consistent and able to play like we did today then maybe we are alive until the end of April and be a real contender,” added Pochettino.

“We are involved in four competitions but I think today we surprise everyone because not only the quality, but the energy we showed today was amazing.”

Everton struck first against the run of play in a wildly open contest when Theo Walcott stabbed home at the near post from Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s cross.

But Spurs looked as if they could score with almost every attack and were soon on level terms with the aid of a Jordan Pickford error.

The England number one rushed from his goal but only succeeded in getting in the way of his own defender Kurt Zouma and Son took advantage with a wonderful finish from a narrow angle.

“We dominated the game from the start, we created so many chances, so we were unlucky to be 1-0 down,” said Son.

“But we bounced back, showed our character and our mentality. We are happy to get three points here.”

– Tottenham blitz –

Once back on level terms, Spurs were relentless as Pickford denied Son a second but Alli charged into the box to sweep home the rebound to turn the game around.

Kane is now just one goal behind Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in the race for the Premier League golden boot and showed his predatory instincts to side-foot into an empty net after Kieran Trippier’s fine free-kick came back off the post three minutes before half-time.

“I think everyone is talking about Liverpool and Man City, but we are just doing well as we normally do,” said the England captain.

“We’ve had a great week, we’ve got games coming up thick and fast but games we can win.”

Both teams face the least rest time of any Premier League side over the festive period with another three games to come between now and New Year’s Day.

However, there was no let up in the pace of the game after the break as Eriksen produced a technically-perfect volley from the edge of the box to make it 4-1 before Gylfi Sigurdsson pulled a goal back for Everton three minutes later.

Yet, any hope of a fightback was extinguished just after the hour mark when Son’s fine control cushioned Erik Lamela’s pass before he finished through the legs of Pickford.

It was announced this week that the South Korean will go to the Asian Cup in January despite already representing his country at the World Cup and Asian Games this year.

And Son showed why he will be missed by his club in January once more with an inch-perfect cross for Kane to slide in for his second of the afternoon 16 minutes from time.

THAI ACE CLINCHES GLORY FOR KINGDOM WITH FINAL PUTT

CHON BURI – KIRADECH APHIBARNRAT turned the home hero when he saved a par putt on the final hole to spearhead Thailand to a 15-13 win over Japan in a nail-biting final day of the Amata Friendship Cup at the Amata Spring Country Club.

With a 10-6 lead from the foursomes and fourballs, Thailand needed just 4.5 points from yesterday’s 12 singles matches, but the task turned out to be more difficult than it was supposed to.

Japan stayed true to their fighting nature, rallying from behind to breathe down Thai necks at 13-14. It all came down to world No 38 Kiradech and fellow PGA Tour player Satoshi Kodaira to decide the victors – and it was the Thai who made a four foot-par-putt to close the deal.

“It was the most exciting putt of my life,” said the 29-year-old winner of four European Tour titles. “I have played this course many times but I was so nervous before the last putt. I knew I had to make it not only for myself but for my team and Thailand,” said the Kingdom’s No 1.

Japan started the day in ominous style with Yuto Katsuragawa winning the battle against fellow amateur Sadom Kaewkanjana 1-up. Teenage prodigy Atthaya Thitikul, also an amateur, then scored the first point of the day for the home team, beating Yuri Yoshida 1 up to extend the overall Thai lead to 11-7.

“I wish I could have won more points for our team,” said Atthaya, who contributed 1.5 over the three days. “Sometimes you try your best but the other team does better,” added the 15-year-old Atthaya who aims to defend her title in the Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific Championship in Japan next year.

Thailand went up to 12-7 when Jazz Janewattananond produced his fourth point of the tournament with a 1-up win over Kodai Ichihara.

“I’m more motivated when I play for the country. We all agreed there’s no need to apologise if anyone make mistakes, because we all want to win,” said the two-time Asian Tour winner.

Japan struck back in the next three matches to reduce the deficit to 9-12. Former world No 44 Fumika Kawagishi outclassed Thai No 3 Pornanong Phatlum 5&3, followed by an upset win for one-time Japan Tour winner Masahiro Kawamura over eight-time European Tour victor Thongchai Jaidee 3&2 and Erika |Hara defeating Pannarat Thanapolboonyaras 1 up.

Thailand stopped the bleeding when Prom Meesawat halved with Ryuko Tokimatsu for a total score of 12.5-10.5.

Thidapa Suwannapura then stretched the Thai lead to 13.5-10.5 with a 2-up win over Sakura Koiwai before veteran Prayad Marksaeng halved with Hideto Tanihara for 14-11.

“I was nervous all the time as she put up a great fight. I made lots of birdies but I missed for bogeys too. It was a good tournament as I got to play with Thongchai Jaidee who taught me a few things,” said the third Thai to win on the LPGA Tour this year.

Thailand were half a point from victory and Moriya Jutanugarn could have brought it home but instead missed her three-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. Two-time Japan LPGA winner Mami Fukuda then saved par to win 1 up and close the gap to 12-14.

Japan then threatened to pull off a “miracle in Chon Buri” when Thailand’s world No 1 Ariya Jutanugarn was stunned by No 7 Nasa Hataoka, 3&1. But then up stepped Kiradech to save the day. “I knew Kiradech would bring home the victory as he is a tough player. It was such an amazing ending,” said Ariya.

Thai captain Boonchu Ruangkit admitted he didn’t expect the final day would go to the wire.

“I thought it would be over sooner. The Japanese women putted so well. It was a very exciting day,” said the Thai legend.

Japanese captain Naomichi “Joe” Ozaki said: “We put up a fight. I give credit to all my players for great teamwork.”

Yesterday’s singles:

Sadom Kaewkanjana lost to Yuto Katsuragawa 1 down

Atthaya Thitikul beat Yuri Yoshida 1 up

Jazz Janewattananond beat Kodai Ichihara 1 up

Indonesia has no early warning system for volcanic tsunamis: BNPB

Breaking News December 24, 2018 01:00

By The Jakarta Post
Asia News Network

The government said on Sunday following a “volcanic tsunami” in the Sunda Strait that the country did not have any early warning system for tsunamis not caused by earthquakes.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said there had been no warning about the Sunda Strait tsunami because Indonesia did not yet have any early warning system for tsunamis caused by underwater landslides or volcanoes in the sea.

He said that, according to a report from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the tsunami that happened on Saturday night was likely to have been caused by an underwater landslide caused by volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau, combined with an unusually high tidal wave because of the full moon.

The BMKG stated in a press release that a tsunami hit coastal areas of western Banten and southern Lampung at 9:27 p.m. Earlier on Saturday evening, the BMKG had said the disaster was not a tsunami but a high tidal wave.

At midday on Sunday, the confirmed death toll of the tsunami had reached 168, while 745 people were reported injured and at least 30 missing. At least 585 homes have been destroyed, nine hotels severely damaged, 60 restaurants damaged and 350 boats damaged.

The western coast of Banten is a popular tourist destination. Many of the victims were vacationers.

The coastal areas most severely affected by the tsunami were Pandeglang regency, Serang, and South Lampung. In Pandeglang regency, most casualties were reported at the Mutiara Carita Cottage Hotel, the Tanjung Lesung Hotel and Sambolo village.

“According to preliminary data, there are no foreign casualties, only Indonesians,” he said.

Sutopo said the BMKG, the Geological Institute, the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs were continuing their investigation to confirm whether or not the tsunami had been caused by Mount Anak Krakatau’s volcanic activity.

“This is because the activity [of the volcano] was relatively low yesterday. There was only a flow of magma and the hurling of incandescent rock, much smaller than the eruptions in October and November,” Sutopo said.

At lease 222 dead as volcano-triggered tsunami hits Indonesia

Breaking News December 24, 2018 01:00

By AFP

Carita, Indonesia – A volcano-triggered tsunami has left at least 222 people dead and hundreds more injured after slamming without warning into beaches around Indonesia’s Sunda Strait, officials said Sunday, voicing fears that the toll would rise further.

Hundreds of buildings were destroyed by the wave, which hit the coast of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java about 9:30 pm (1430 GMT) on Saturday after a volcano known as the “child” of Krakatoa erupted, national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

Dramatic video posted on social media showed a wall of water suddenly crashing into a concert by pop group “Seventeen” — hurling band members off the stage and then flooding into the audience.

In a tearful Instagram post, frontman Riefian Fajarsyah said the band’s bassist and road manager had been killed and his wife was missing.

Search and rescue teams were scouring rubble for survivors, with 222 people confirmed dead, 843 people injured and 28 missing, Nugroho said.

Tsunamis triggered by volcanic eruptions are relatively rare, caused by the sudden displacement of water or “slope failure”, according to the International Tsunami Information Centre.

Unlike those caused by earthquakes, which trigger alert systems, they give authorities very little time to warn residents of the impending threat.

The destructive wave left a trail of uprooted trees and debris strewn across beaches. A tangled mess of corrugated steel roofing, timber and rubble was dragged inland at Carita beach, a popular spot for day-trippers on the west coast of Java.

Photographer Oystein Andersen described how he was caught up in the disaster while on the beach taking photos of Anak Krakatoa.

“I suddenly saw a big wave,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“I had to run, as the wave passed the beach and landed 15-20m inland. (The) next wave entered the hotel area where I was staying and downed cars on the road behind it.”

Asep Perangkat said he was with his family when the wave surged through Carita, carving a swathe of destruction, dragging cars and shipping containers.

“Buildings on the edge of the beach were destroyed. Trees and electric poles fell to the ground,” he told AFP.

In Lampung province, on the other side of the strait, Lutfi Al Rasyid fled the beach in Kalianda city, fearing for his life.

“I could not start my motorbike so I left it and I ran… I just prayed and ran as far as I could,” the 23-year-old told AFP.

Kathy Mueller from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said the toll was likely to rise as the conditions on the ground became clearer.

“The situation, and the death toll, will remain fluid over the next days and even weeks,” she told AFP.

Aid workers were helping to evacuate the injured and bring in clean water, tarpaulins and provide shelter, she added, saying the group was preparing for the possibility of diseases breaking out in the tsunami zone.

– Initial error –

Anak Krakatoa, which forms a small island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, emerged around 1928 in the crater left by Krakatoa, which erupted in 1883 killing at least 36,000 people.

“The cause of the undersea landslide was due to volcanic activity of Anak Krakatoa, which coincided with a high tide due to the full moon,” Nugroho told reporters in Yogyakarta.

Professor David Rothery from The Open University said that the proximity of the volcano to the coast gave authorities very little time to act.

“Tsunami warning buoys are positioned to warn of tsunamis originated by earthquakes at underwater tectonic plate boundaries. Even if there had been such a buoy right next to Anak Krakatau, this is so close to the affected shorelines that warning time would have been minimal given the high speeds at which tsunami waves travel,” he said.

Indonesian authorities initially said the wave was not a tsunami, but instead a tidal surge and urged the public not to panic.

Nugroho later apologised, saying because there was no earthquake it had been difficult to ascertain the cause of the incident early on.

“If there is an initial error we’re sorry,” he wrote on Twitter.

The wave swamped parts of the coast around the Sunda Strait, leaving at least 164 people dead in worst-affected Pandeglang district on Java’s western tip.

Large numbers of casualties were recorded at two hotels in the area, Nugroho said, without elaborating.

Eleven people died further north in Serang, while 48 were killed in South Lampung, on Sumatra island.

“This number is predicted to increase,” Nugroho said.

Heavy equipment was being transported to badly hit areas to help search for victims and evacuation posts and public kitchens were being set up for evacuees, he added.

According to Indonesia’s geological agency, Anak Krakatoa had been showing signs of heightened activity for days, spewing plumes of ash thousands of metres into the air.

Indonesia is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth due to its position straddling the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide.

Most recently in the city of Palu on Sulawesi island a quake and tsunami in September killed thousands of people.

On December 26, 2004 a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.

Spiegel to file criminal complaint against cheating reporter

Berlin – Influential German news weekly Der Spiegel said Sunday it would file a criminal complaint against a disgraced reporter after it emerged he may have embezzled donations intended for Syrian street children.

Claas Relotius, 33, resigned this month after admitting to making up stories and inventing protagonists in more than a dozen articles in the magazine’s print and online editions.

Spiegel said it now had information that Relotius allegedly launched a campaign for readers to give money to help subjects of an article he wrote but that the bank details he gave directed the funds to his own account.

“Der Spiegel will give all the information it collects to public prosecutors as part of a criminal complaint,” it said on its website.

Spiegel said concerned readers had in recent days reported Relotius’s call for donations purportedly for orphaned Syrian children living on the streets of Turkey.

It said it had been unaware of the campaign and that it was not immediately clear how much money was raised from the appeal, apparently made by email to readers who contacted him about the story.

Spiegel published the article by Relotius in July 2016 but a Turkish photographer who worked with him on the piece has since noted significant inaccuracies.

The magazine said it now believes Relotius may have simply made up one of the main protagonists, whom the article described as young siblings.

Relotius described his attempts to help the children in a subsequent collection of articles, including a months-long effort to bring the children to Germany to be adopted by a family. Spiegel said this also appeared to be a lie.

In its most recent edition, the magazine said the scam was the “worst thing that can happen to an editorial team”.

Acknowledging the damage to faith in its own work and the media in general, it apologised promised to “do everything to boost our credibility again.”
