Hertford Street Club

BHUTAN – Dzongs top the itinerary in most cities on Bhutan’s burgeoning tourist circuit, and for good reason too.

They are dramatic structures – former military fortresses with towering walls that encircle a network of temples, monks’ living quarters and government offices today. Monks and civil servants cross the same courtyards; elaborate murals adorn walls and doorways and there are floor-to-ceiling prayer wheels.

Built in 1637, Punakha Dzong in the valley town of Punakha rises impressively from the banks of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers.

Paro Dzong, dubbed “fortress of a heap of jewels”, offers panoramic views of Paro township. And Tashichho Dzong, located in the capital Thimphu, has been the seat of Bhutan’s government since 1952.

But there is more to Bhutan, I learn, during a seven-day tour with home-grown company Druk Asia, which specialises in tours to a country that topped Lonely Planet’s list of best places to visit next year.

SOCIAL CAUSES

In Thimphu, we visit The Craft Gallery by Gyalyum Charitable Trust, a two-storey craft shop that sells accessories, scarves and bags made by vulnerable women, such as survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

I have encountered many similar initiatives while travelling around South-east Asia. But I did not expect to find the same thing in Bhutan, often touted as the world’s happiest kingdom.

There is trouble in paradise too. Executive director Tshering Uden Penjor knows this. She is proud of Bhutan’s unique culture, yet realistic about the work that needs to be done.

“Although Bhutan is a matrilineal society, a lot of women accept domestic violence because they are reliant on their spouses or believe that is just the way things are. We want to help the women who do not complain,” she says.

Founded by Bhutan’s Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck, the trust oversees various charities and grassroots organisations such as Renew, which empowers vulnerable women, and the non-profit Royal Textile Academy, a museum-cum- educational centre.

Weaving is an important part of the country’s heritage and the academy’s goal is to collect, document, preserve and display the national art form.

Hand-woven textiles are used to make the traditional Bhutanese dress. Women wear the kira, a large piece of fabric tightly wrapped around the waist or chest and topped with a short jacket, while men wear the gho, a knee-length robe fastened at the waist by a cloth sash.

We wander along walls of richly coloured tapestries, adorned with symbols such as the eternal knot, which represents the importance of Buddhism in Bhutan.

Then we head downstairs to visit classrooms of girls taking a summer weaving course, their headphones plugged in and tapping away at smartphones while weaving at looms.

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

In Bhutan, astrology is so well-regarded that locals consult the stars before making major life decisions such as getting married, changing jobs or buying a car.

I am no believer in horoscopes, but keep an open mind during my reading at Pari Zampa Lhakhang, a temple and astrology school where about 100 monks study. They will take at least a decade to graduate and then serve at monasteries in various districts.

Mr Sangay Lhendup, 32, who spent 15 years as a student and now teaches at the school, uses my birth year to read the charts and discerns that my lucky colours are white, orange and yellow, my lucky number is one and that I was a goddess in my previous life.

If the reading appears arbitrary, it is also grounded in common sense. I am told to avoid polluted areas in my old age and to avoid killing animals.

I think guiltily about the mosquitoes I have swatted over the years – very un-goddess-like.

Locals, in contrast, take a much gentler approach. When flying ants swarm my bedroom at a lodge in Gangtey, a Bhutanese girl gathers them by hand and tosses them out the door.

And while driving along winding mountain roads – punctuated by painted signs that exhort “No hurry, no worry” – our driver does not honk at passing cows, but slows down to let the animals cross.

LOCAL PLEASURES

Life is unhurried in Bhutan. There is time to indulge in long baths where the water, infused with artemisia, mint and marijuana leaves to soothe tired muscles, is warmed by river stones that have been heated over a wood fire until they glow like embers.

I experience this at the Aum Choden farmhouse in Paro, a delightfully rustic homestay run by Mr Yeshi Tashi Gocha, 31. We are here only for the afternoon, but guests can spend the night at the two-storey building run by Mr Yeshi, his wife and brothers.

In the backyard, wooden tubs are housed in a row of cubicle-like sheds. Knock on a privacy panel and someone will drop a stone into a partitioned section of your tub, so hot that the water sizzles and steams. I hear the strumming of a guitar and soak in strains of a lilting Bhutanese tune.

Mr Yeshi says Bhutanese take baths like these about eight times a month. In summer, it is healing after a trek. In winter, it warms the body and soul.

So popular is this pastime that luxury lodge Six Senses Thimphu includes an upscale version as part of its spa offerings. The international luxury chain opened its first three properties in Thimphu, Punakha and Paro this March.

With earthy timber furnishings and balconies that overlook Bhutan’s rolling hills and verdant rice terraces, the lodges meld luxury with touches of local culture. Bukharis, or traditional wood-burning stoves offer warmth in winter; and vegetable-dyed Himalayan rugs adorn guest rooms.

Six Senses chefs adapt local specialities such as ema datshi, a cheese and chilli stew that is Bhutan’s most iconic dish. Here, chilli is a vegetable, not a condiment.

Chefs have toned down the heat for international palates, but spice-lovers who want to sample the original version can sign up for a cooking class at Gangtey’s ABC Lodge, which employs youth from the surrounding villages.

Meals often include an assortment of dishes cooked with chilli and cheese, accompanied by red rice. ST PHOTO: CLARA LOCK

Here, we crumble a mixture of cottage and processed cheese, mixing it by hand as the staff add onions, garlic and tomatoes to temper the heat. A sprinkle of peppercorns lends a buzzy, mildly numbing sensation to the dish, like the mala stir-fries so popular in Singapore.

MONASTERY IN THE CLOUDS

Should you feel the need to burn off all the food, there are opportunities aplenty.

In Gangtey, we trek through the scenic Phobjikha Valley where cows amble through yellow-speckled meadows and horses graze beneath pine trees.

After about an hour, we emerge atop a knoll, where the clouds hang heavy and low, almost close enough to touch. Between November and February, the valley teems with endangered black-necked cranes prized because they symbolise longevity, prosperity and peace.

It is July when I visit, so we take a short drive to the black-necked crane information centre, which houses a solitary bird, year round. Karma, found in 2016 with an injured left wing, is healthy but unable to fly, regards us with cool curiosity from its cage.

There are many temples in Bhutan, but none so majestic as the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Built on a cliff near the town of Paro, in western Bhutan, the temple looms dramatically from the clouds.

It is like the Eiffel Tower in Paris or Tower Bridge in London – the classic postcard shot everyone associates with the country.

But getting to the temple is not so easy. The way up is a two- to four-hour trek, depending on your fitness level. The thinning air, at 2,800m above sea level, compounds the challenge.

Still, almost every visitor attempts this route, climbing alongside locals who ascend to pay their respects at what is believed to be Bhutan’s holiest site.

According to folklore, revered figure Guru Rinpoche, who is recognised for bringing Buddhism to Bhutan, flew to the site on the back of a tiger and subdued the evil spirits in the region. Today, locals believe that all prayers they make at the monastery will be answered.

At the end of a lung-busting climb, we finally make it to the monastery, which houses a maze of caves and temples. Each one tells a different story – for instance, my guide points out a cave where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated for three months.

Around me, devotees pause to receive holy water blessings from monks or light offerings of butter lamps. But dwarfed by the mountains, I am content to sit in silence.

I have no prayers, only gratitude.

GETTING THERE

I took a five-hour flight to Paro on Drukair, which included a 40-minute stopover in Guwahati, India. Passengers headed for Bhutan do not have to disembark. In December this year and next year, Drukair will increase the frequency of Singapore-Bhutan flights from twice to thrice a week.

TIPS

• Daily minimum tariffs, which include guide and transport fees, entrance fees to tourist attractions, all meals and lodging at three-star accommodation, apply to tourists. It costs US$250 (S$340) a night during peak season (March to May and September to November) and US$200 a night during off-peak season.

• For those seeking far-flung adventures, the time to visit is now. Bhutan’s focus on high-value, low-impact tourism means top attractions are not yet overcrowded. But tourist arrivals to the landlocked Himalayan nation have grown exponentially in the past decade. Close to 275,000 people visited Bhutan last year, compared with about 110,000 in 2012. Go before more tourist buses jam the roads.

• Pack layers as the weather can vary drastically depending on time of day, as well as between cities of different elevation. During my trip in July, temperatures dropped to single digits at night in Gangtey, while afternoons in the lower-lying Punakha were warm enough for just a T-shirt.

Sook Siam celebrates first anniversary and Bt1 billion in revenue

Muang Sook Siam at Iconsiam has plenty to celebrate this month as it marks its first birthday and higher-than-expected revenue of Bt1 billion. Designed to showcase Thai lifestyles to the world, it has succeeded in drawing both visitors both Thais and foreigners, all of whom have taken the new destination to their hearts, loving its varied and local eating and shopping experiences on the theme “Feel the charm of happy Thai lifestyles with a trip to Muang Sook Siam”.

Growing in vibrancy throughout the first year, the mini-city is attracting more than 60,000 visitors per day on average and is now entering its second year with plans to launch a learning centre called “Muang Sook Siam Academy” to boost the marketing strength of its small community businesses. An award scheme gives the stores incentives to maintain a high standard. Muang Sook Siam has also shown an impressive ability to keep cultural heritage alive with international standard quality and distribute Thai community products across the globe via its many foreign visitors.

Visitors today can browse at more than 30 shops of Thai community products, while more than 1,000 displays have rotated through in the last 12 monthsThe lifestyle destination was developed in line with the Thai government’s policy to boost income levels in local communities while also maintaining folk wisdom and traditional Thai lifestyle in a sustainable way.

Luckana Naviroj, chairman of the project, says Muang Sook Siam proves that bringing together local heroes, artists, craftsmen, business entrepreneurs, and community enterprises under the roof is a winning formula.

The mini-city is designed to support and promote small producers of community products in all regions of the Kingdom by handing them greater knowledge in sales and marketing, and tools to conduct their business in a new format. The aim is to tap demand from shoppers, especially foreigners, at source and to help Thai community products effectively penetrate the market both in Thailand and abroad. In the future, small producers can build on their business by conducting e-commerce to support Thailand’s digital economy, and further cultivate Thai wisdom heritage, artworks and traditional crafts in a sustainable way.

“Thanks to strong marketing support and all-round knowledge, entrepreneurs who come from 77 provinces across Thailand have been very successful in doing business over the past year,” says Luckana. “We found that the entrepreneurs who trade their community products at Muang Sook Siam have enjoyed higher incomes, resulting in higher investment budgets for their business which enables them to further develop products. Meanwhile, their children, who are the next generation of community entrepreneurs, will see there is a way to continue the business, making their family crafts a sustainable and growing venture.”

“Muang Sook Siam” showcases the culture and traditions of all four major regions of the country in food, artwork, handicraft, herbal remedies, folk plays, and local wisdom, through cooperation between business partners, artists, rural enterprises and Thai living communities. The lifestyle destination is divided into four major zones covering North, Northeast, South and Central regions. Of the more than 1,000 shops rotated over the past year, 600 have offered regional food specialities, while 400 have showcased other products.

Today, “Muang Sook Siam” is attracting no less than 50,000 to 70,000 visitors a day. The growth in numbers is driven by several different and identifiable groups of foreign visitors, with the highest number coming from China, followed by Taiwan, Asean countries, as well as Russia, India, South Korea, Japan, Europe and the Middle East.

What’s remarkable about “Muang Sook Siam” is that it has opened a space for rural entrepreneurs to present their community 365 days a year. But it also encourages them to grow in many ways, such as developing their products to match modern advances; by blending innovation and technology to increase product value for farmers and villagers; as well as helping them learn about retail mechanisms, wholesale in overseas markets and a new modern marketing platform called the Omni Channel. The Omni Channel runs under an eco-trading system for sustainable management of products in line with the government’s “Thailand 4.0” policy to inject innovation into the development of rural wisdom products.

Luckana says that “Muang Sook Siam” also answers the requirements of urban consumers, who demand the convenience of being able to select valuable products from many communities in one place. Visitors can browse foods, kitchenware and other utensils crafted with painstaking care and reflecting the beauty of the art and traditional wisdom of age-old rural communities.

They get also to tuch and feel the unique qualities imbued by the “seven pillars of Thai happiness”. These are “Sook Saab”, offering a diversity of delicious foods from different locales; “Sook Sanei”, presenting the inimitable charm of Thai lifestyles in the beauty of architecture; “Sook Srang Sran”, creating new and innovative expressions of Thainess; “Sook Sueb San” or the changing relationships and cultural stories within communities; and “Sook Sanook” which showcases the Thai spirit of fun and joy. “Sook Siam” embodies the combination of these seven pillars of happiness, inspiring genuine and original products that evoke a pride that can be recognised both here in Thailand and throughout the rest of the world.

Muang Sook Siam recently boosted the capabilities of entrepreneurs from various communities by selecting remarkable and unique shops from different regions for training to increase their skills and knowledge. Of these shops, 10 were then selected to receive “Sook Siam Local Heroes 2019” awards.

In the past year, many entrepreneurs have opened shops at Muang Sook Siam and received strong interest from foreign customers. Among those who have built on this success by expanding their business overseas are Loong Ngern Clay-Pot Coffee from Chiang Mai, who has expanded to Indonesia; Kuay Tiew Rua (Boat Noodles) Muang Pathum, which has sold its franchise to China; and “Joob General”, whose hand-made woollen products from Phasi Charoen in Bangkok are being made available in Taiwan. Others who have won similar success include Kanom Nga Baan Charnmuang (Dek Doi) from Mae Hong Son Province; Pha Toomthong crafts from Buriram Province; Tai Muang Phia enterprise group from Khon Kaen Province; and Kanom Jeeb Pha Ping from Trang Province.

As part of its plans for business development and expansion in the future, “Muang Sook Siam” at Iconsiam will launch a project called “Muang Sook Siam Academy” in 2020 as a springboard for rural entrepreneurs in Thailand to go international. The long-term plan, though, is to remain committed to supporting and pushing Thai entrepreneurs and their community products, both foods and crafts, onto the global stage.

“We want ‘Muang Sook Siam’ to be a source of pride for the Thai people, and be mentioned at the national level. This aim is driven by a strong focus on promotion and support from the private sector, which wants to distribute knowledge and income among local entrepreneurs producing community products. The project is in line with the government’s policy, which focuses on the development of knowledge, capability and income generation in rural communities, which will lead to overall growth of the economy in a sustainable way,” says Luckana.

Thai rising star Jazz Janewattananond proved his credentials as the newest Asia’s number one by firing a scintillating 10-under-par 62 to seize the third-round lead at the BNI Indonesian Masters supported by Bank BRI and MedcoEnergi on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Thai, who is enjoying a stellar season with two wins and six top-10s, blazed the course with two eagles and seven birdies against a bogey to lead by one shot over countryman Gunn Charoenkul on 16-under-par 200 total at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club.

Jazz, world’s highest-ranked Thai in 57th place on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), is chasing a career fifth Asian Tour title and a third one this season at the popular US$750,000 event, which forms the third leg of the 2019/20 Panasonic Swing.

With a total of 20 OWGR points on offer in what is the flagship event of the Asian Tour this week, Jazz will need to win the 2019 BNI Indonesian Masters to break into the world’s top-50 at the end of the season and secure his berth at The Masters next April.

“I am pretty pleased. I was surprised to go out there and shoot this low round today. I was struggling with my putting in the first two rounds but seems like it got better today,” said Jazz who has already won the No 1 position on this Asian Tour this year.

“I put in a new putter today. Maybe I’ll stick with it tomorrow. I was surprised to see some balls go in actually…….I’m trying to break into the world’s top-50 with a win tomorrow and secure my place in The Masters will be at the back of my mind for sure. It will be a motivating factor for me tomorrow. I just want to go out and play my best again,” added Jazz who tied the lowest 18-hole score in the tournament history with his third-round 62. Justin Rose of England carded two 62s in 2017 while Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung closed with a similar 62 in the last edition.

Gunn Charoenkul

Gunn, seeking his Asian Tour breakthrough, returned with three birdies in his closing four holes to grab second place while veteran Keith Horne of South Africa remained in contention for his maiden win on the region’s premier Tour after battling to a 71 to take third place on 203.

“I would be happy with an under-par round. I think I may need more experience playing in the last group. I did have some opportunities in Japan but couldn’t really hold my nerves well. I played with Jazz sometimes in practice rounds when we were in Japan, but we haven’t really played together in tournaments. He’s been playing well the last few years so looking forward to learning some stuff from him tomorrow,” said Gunn, hoping for his maiden Tour victory.

PGA Tour winner Alex Cejka of Germany, who is playing on a sponsor’s invitation this week, posted a 70 to settle four shots off the pace in fourth while overnight leader Josh Younger of Australia slipped to tied-fifth on 205 following a disappointing 74.

Danny Masrin emerged as the highest-placed Indonesian in tied-10th place on 207 after signing for a commendable 68 in the event, which is celebrating its ninth straight edition on the Asian Tour this week.

The winner of the 2019 BNI Indonesian Masters will also receive a coveted spot in the World Golf Championships – FedEx St. Jude Invitational in 2020.
