The American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) Thailand handed out its annual CSR Excellence Awards 2022, with three additional special awards.

This year three additional special awards were presented to Harmless Harvest, WHA Industrial Development, and PCS Security and Facility Services for focusing on an inclusive society and contributing to the Bio-Circular Green (BCG) economy.

Out of the 100 companies who are members of AMCHAM, 91 were recognised as meeting the minimum criteria to demonstrate a commitment to conducting business responsibly and giving back to local communities, people and people and environment.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-archa, US Ambassador to Thailand Robert Godec, Thai Trade Representative ML Chayotid Kridakon, and AMCHAM president Jeff Nygaard presided over the awards ceremony.

AMCHAM honours outstanding members with CSR Excellence Awards

The AMCHAM CSR Excellence Recognition is awarded to member companies for their long-term efforts to support Thailand’s sustainable development. Qualifying companies should have CSR programmes with measurable results that create both economic and social gains for a year or more, high levels of employee involvement, and strong strategic partnerships with Thai organisations. The company mission must also align closely with the goals of their CSR activities.

“The BCG economy is a very important initiative that needs to be driven in an economic model because we want to promote the Bio-Circular-Green economy from made, used, recycled, refurbished and create that circle. It’s actually a strength for Thailand as well because Thailand is definitely trying to promote two big things — green energy or renewable energy, and plastic recycling — which kind of affect the beginning of the circle and the end as well,” AMCHAM president Jeff Nygaard, who is also executive vice president of operations and technology of Seagate Technology, said.

In addition, three special awards were given to three member companies:

● The Ambassador’s Award for Excellence in Thai-US partnership went to Harmless Harvest for its “Coconuts Agriculture Project”. The project promotes regenerative agricultural practices among Nam Hom coconut farmers. The award, handed out by US Ambassador Godec, recognises a CSR project that supports innovation in the BCG economic model through US-Thai partnership for transfer of technology or skills.

● Thai Development Award went to WHA Industrial Development for its project “WeCYCLE”. The upcycling project uses water hyacinth fiber from constructed wetlands and recycled PET bottles. The award, presented by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut, honours a company that fosters sustainable development in alignment with the principles of the BCG model.

● The Excellence in CSR Award was won by PCS Security and Facility Services for its project, “Neighbouring Country Colleagues Programme”. It fosters and invests in a diverse and inclusive work culture. The award, presented by Nygaard, is given to a company that nurtures an inclusive society by embracing diversity to reduce inequality.

“The chamber of commerce membership is comprised of 50% US affiliated and about 33% of Thai companies and another 18% are international, so it’s a big group of companies that share the same values,” said Nygaard.

He stressed during his speech at the opening ceremony that “CSR activities strengthen stakeholder engagement and support, whether they are shareholders, business partners, customers, employees, governments, or the broader community. Our best path for success is when community and industry work together.”

Throughout the year, the CSR Committee shares these best practices with the membership, providing support and resources for member companies who are developing or improving their CSR strategies. Through the AMCHAM CSR Excellence Awards, these companies are awarded for their long-term efforts to support Thailand’s sustainable development.

Grab, a leading superapp in Southeast Asia, is expanding into digital financial services in Thailand with the launch of “PayLater by Grab”.

Worachat Luxkanalode, country head of Grab Thailand, said at a press conference on Wednesday that the objective of this facility is to provide more payment options for all Grab services in one single bill.

Beginning next month, this post-paid service will provide Grab users with enhanced flexibility, seamless experience and extra benefits across mobility as well as deliveries of food, parcel, and on-demand everyday goods, he said.

“To provide a better experience to our users, we have introduced ‘PayLater by Grab’, starting with the launch of the post-paid service to enable Grab users to pay for all services in one single bill each month,” Worachat said.

The move follows the increasing popularity of digital commerce in the past few years, which have given rise to new digital financial services that can better serve customers’ needs.

According to a report by e-Conomy SEA 2022, the total transaction volume of digital payment in Thailand is expected to reach US$113 billion in 2022 and grow by 12% within 2025. One of the fastest-growing services is the “Buy Now, Pay Later” service, which allows customers to manage their expenses more conveniently.

Worachat pointed out that today, almost two-thirds of Grab users choose cashless payment methods, including GrabPay Wallet and debit/credit cards.

He added that the post-paid service under PayLater by Grab has three key advantages:

● Flexibility — users can combine all transactions into one single bill and pay for it the following month;
 Seamless — users can choose the post-paid method before confirming an order across all Grab service applications;
● Extra points — users can earn up to two GrabRewards points for every 16 baht spent on Grab.

Worachat said that the launch of PayLater by Grab is part of the company’s efforts to respond to consumer behaviour by providing financial liquidity to Grab users.

He vowed to continue expanding its service offerings in the future to meet the various digital payment needs of both users and partners.

Metaverse offers Thai e-commerce industry new, interesting challenges

For Thailand’s growing e-commerce industry, the metaverse is a new chapter. In the 22nd episode of Business Story, Kulthirath Pakawachkrilers, president of the Thai E-Commerce Association, believes e-commerce in Thailand will grow five-fold in the next three years.

Kulthirath said that we can expect more challenges next year, as consumer behaviour will continue changing, data security threats will keep rising and boundaries between physical and digital shopping will continue to blur.

Kulthirath Pakawachkrilers, president of the Thai E-Commerce Association, Kulthirath Pakawachkrilers, president of the Thai E-Commerce Association,

“However, businesses that keep up with these trends will be able to seize opportunities to boost revenue and sales,” she added.

What is your working background?

I worked for and consulted with a lot of enterprises, such as Lazada, Big C Super Center, and Sephora Online. I have expertise in e-commerce, digital marketing, and IT. I am also president of the Thai E-Commerce Association.

What is your future direction?

I would like my company to help expand the business across the border to China and globally. We can see so many opportunities. We try to settle them legally in the countries where they would like to go. We will help and partner until the business reaches its goals.

Do you think Thailand can be the hub of technology in the future?

Yes, I still hope.

How does e-commerce integrate with the organization?

I believe that any business can go e-commerce and conduct online transactions. They either pay now or pay later.

Firstly, you have to make sure the platform application is totally ready. You cannot give the bud time. Secondly, you need to sell the products in the invisible store. You must ensure that your content, image, hashtag, and mechanism allow people to find your products.

Also, if the price is too high, it must be justified.Who will purchase them? You must have the promotion. You can’t be lazy with e-commerce by dedicating teams to it right away.

“How tall is the building, and how big is the e-commerce platform?” “You need to invest in people,” she said.

Winona Feminine, which specialises in feminine cleansing products, is collaborating with the leading pharmacy chain Bangkok Drugstore to expand the reach of its new Winona Probio supplement.

Nopparat Suksaranludee, the founder of Winona Feminine, told the press on Tuesday that the probiotic was the result of more than 20 years of research and had been bred especially to match the physical conditions of Thai women.

She added that Winona Probio had won a very positive response when it was launched in May via the Winona Feminine website, prompting her to start seeking distribution partners.

“Our partners need to be experts who know how to store the product properly and can explain the usage correctly. Winona Probio needs to be stored in cold temperatures to keep the bacteria alive,” Nopparat explained.

She said that though most Thai women are aware of the benefits of probiotics, such as better immunity and prevention of some vaginal infections, most probiotics sold locally are imported.

However, she said, upon meeting researchers from the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) as part of a Thailand Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences project, she learned of Thailand’s first probiotic strain – the Lactobacillus paracasei MSMC39-1.

Gut unhappy? There’s now a probiotic designed specifically for Thais

She explained that this probiotic bacteria had been bred specifically to work effectively on Thai digestive systems, which makes it very effective with few side effects.

“We already have some cleansers that help provide immediate relief for feminine problems, but Winona Probio prevents these problems from occurring in the first place,” she said.

Probiotics are often described as “good” or “friendly” bacteria that help restore the natural balance in the digestive system when it has been disrupted by an illness or treatment.

She added that her company is working with Biotec to develop a second probiotic breed that can help reduce cholesterol, boost antioxidants and kickstart the metabolism.

“This should be released by the end of this year,” she said.

Gut unhappy? There’s now a probiotic designed specifically for Thais

Winona Feminine was founded in September 2016 with the goal of producing and developing personal care and cosmetics products, with a special focus on feminine hygiene.

Though most of the company’s products are sold locally, it has started entering the export market.

Nopparat said she plans to start selling Winona Probio in Asean countries, namely Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Brunei, in a year.

She said the export of Winona Probio will be limited to Southeast Asia because these countries share similar cuisines, weather and lifestyles.

However, she said, the cleansing products will be targeted at a wider market and sold in countries like China, South Africa, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates and Oman to name a few.

Parents grieve for children killed in deadly Indonesia quake

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

Parents of children killed in a deadly earthquake that hit Indonesia grieved were trying to cope with grief on Wednesday, as authorities said the death toll had risen to 268.

Lala Latifah, the mother of 8-year-old Anisa who died from her injuries after being taken to a clinic, told Reuters she had a hard time letting go of her daughter.

“She was a good girl, she always did what her parents would tell her… but I pray to God that I can someday let go, and give her my blessings,” Latifah said.

The parents of Anisa’s best friend, Vira, recalled seeing their daughter’s body being recovered from beneath piles of debris.

“When I saw it happen, I couldn’t handle it. Seeing my daughter’s condition, her body and face all had injuries,” said Vira’s father Ujang Nurdin, a public bus driver.

Siti Maemun, a teacher at the school Anisa and Vira attended, said 20 children were killed when a deadly 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the town of Cianjur in West Java, about 75 km (45 miles) southeast of the capital Jakarta, on Monday (November 21).

Maemun said they were unprepared for an earthquake of such a large scale.

“We’ve always made sure that since primary school, students are taught by teachers to get out of class quickly if an earthquake happens and to find cover. But this earthquake was huge, and we couldn’t do anything,” she said.

Disaster agency chief Suharyanto told reporters that more than 1,000 people had been injured, 58,000 displaced and 22,000 houses damaged.

Wednesday’s recovery efforts will shift to Cugenang, a hard-hit district near Cianjur, where at least one village is believed to have been buried under a landslide. Helicopters are expected to drop emergency supplies to two more cut off by blocked roads.

Cambodia, Thailand agree to clear all mines on border

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday instructed provincial authorities at the border with Thailand and relevant agencies to clear all mines and remaining explosives in border areas.

His instructions came during the closing ceremony of an exhibition in Phnom Penh celebrating the 30th anniversary of anti-mine action in Cambodia.

The premier called on all relevant authorities to work with Thailand on demining before border issues could be discussed at a later date.

“Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and I have already agreed on demining along the border, to clear areas where there are mines, regardless of border issues, as defining the demarcation line can be done later,” Hun Sen said.

He said that while in the past Cambodia had made such requests to Thailand “without receiving any response”, this time Prayut raised the matter during discussions with him at the 40th and 41st Asean Summit earlier this month.

Hun Sen said Prayut had stated that there were still more than 40 square kilometres to clear on the Thai-Cambodian border.

Cambodia has cleared all landmines from its frontiers with Vietnam and Laos.

“Prayut Chan-o-cha said that now there are more than 40 sq km of land with mines or suspected to contain mines, so we need to remove them all before resolving the demarcation line issue.

“To ensure people’s safety, we can work together to decide which areas Thailand clears and which Cambodia clears,” Hun Sen said.

The number of casualties from landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) had dropped sharply, from 4,320 cases in 1996 to less than 100 per year over the past decade, he noted.

The prime minister also said that while Cambodia still needed help from friends, it could itself set goals for funding to support demining activities.

To date, more than US$18 million (650 million baht) has been received from donors, with $10 million used to clear mines in target areas and $8 million remaining.

“I feel that with the Covid situation improving, there may be a reduction in people affected and needing support, which can be directed to funding demining.

“So we can ensure the mine action is not affected by any lack of funds because we need Cambodia to be landmine free by 2025,” Hun Sen said.

The prime minister also said that “without commitment, we will not be able to clear all mines from Cambodian territory”, as he called on the philanthropists to help their country.

“When we can end the mine problem in Cambodia, it will be one of our great successes after the country suffered so much.

“The war is over, but the curse of mines is not. I have also raised the issue with the US president,” he said.

Ly Thuch, senior minister and first vice-president of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), said at the ceremony that clearing mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) began after liberation day in 1979.

Large-scale demining efforts then began in 1992 with a complete mine action programme, with Cambodia having found and destroyed millions of landmines and ERW over the past 30 years, turning “mined land” into “golden land”.

“As we all know, mine action is not just a technical undertaking, it also comes from the heart.

“The commitment and dedication of demining workers stem from their compassion and sympathy for the people whose lives and livelihoods are being threatened by landmines and explosive remnants of war,” Thuch added.

Cambodia has successfully cleared Phnom Penh and the provinces of Stung Treng, Kep, Prey Veng and Preah Sihanouk, with 1,705 villages declared mine-free.

The government has agreed for the CMAA to hold a “global conference on victim aid” in Cambodia in 2023, which will be attended by 36 countries.
