Commercial brands can enhance mental health: Mintel

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

Brands have the power to influence positive changes to mental health in Thailand, reported Mintel, a market research company.

The market intelligence agency cited that about 80% of Thai consumers said they have experienced a mental health condition in the past six months, and the number of mental health patients has nearly doubled in the last six years as different groups of people are prone to experience dissimilar specific challenges.

Thais reckon mental health should be discussed in public more often as well as find that brands promoting mental health awareness more appealing, according to the research: Attitudes towards Mental Health – Thai Consumer – 2022.

Since the department of Mental Health Ministry of Public Health unveiled that several Thais still also lack access to mental health services and information, Mintel suggested that brands ought to be getting involved and starting a public conversation about mental health to raise concerns and reduce the negative perceptions that come with it.

For instance, they can target younger generations, who are likely to spend more time on devices or use technology for work and their social lives.

“Brands can use social media in a positive way and target the younger population with messages that provide positive encouragement and assist them in developing social skills. In the long run, consumers view brands that have an impact on their lives in a positive light

Helping younger consumers find a healthy balance with screen time is also crucial, so offering ways to manage time online with cultivating meaningful relationships could make a significant impact. In the long run, consumers view brands that have an impact on their lives in a positive light,” said the company.

These days, brands rely heavily on social media to promote their products and services for this Gen Z age group. The report found that the key is to be especially sensitive and responsible in the content they produce in this channel with sincerity and authenticity, putting themselves in the consumer’s shoes and communicating with understanding. If brands want to take a stance and play a role in positive mental health support and advocacy, genuine empathy is crucial.

Some ways brands could achieve this in Thailand include sharing self-care tips, leading a healthy lifestyle, and encouraging others to discuss mental wellness to address the ongoing stigma.

Also, Brands can promote products that deal with mental illnesses-related products/services, host an open mental health forum on social media where people can voluntarily share their stories, and create authentic, valuable content, perhaps by collaborating with professional services to rectify the mental illness problem, according to the research.

THE NATION

ONE Championship megastar Rodtang Jitmuangnon served punishment on a platter to Joseph Lasiri when the two world champions squared off at ONE Fight Night 4: Abbasov v Lee.

“The Iron Man” successfully defended his ONE flyweight Muay Thai world championship for the fourth time at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Rodtang’s victory over “The Hurricane” extended his Muay Thai and kickboxing record in the organization to 12-0 and gave him the longest winning streak in ONE Championship.

The Thai had much to celebrate once he exited the Circle, but he was less than impressed with Lasiri’s performance, despite the fact that the Italian-Moroccan also holds the ONE strawweight Muay Thai world championship.

“He [lasted] for five rounds because he’s a great runner. He should have stood up and then [brawled] with me instead of running. That’s why he could last until the fifth round,” Rodtang said.

“[For] his running skills, I give him a 10. For his talking skills, I give him a 10 as well. But for his fighting skills, [I’d] maybe minus [a few] points,” Rodtang said.

The 25-year-old won’t need to dwell on Lasiri for long. He now has an impressive 269-42-10 record and has proven that he is willing to take on any challenge – whether he is competing against a fellow world champion or stepping into a special rules super-fight against one of the best fighters in the world, like he did when he faced MMA GOAT Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson earlier this year at ONE X.

Rodtang has already set his sights on his next goal, which is to become a two-sport world champion in ONE and whatever follows from there.

“What I’m aiming for right now is to get the [ONE] world title for kickboxing [and become] a second-sport world champion. After that, I’m going to go all the way in MMA and then challenge whoever the champion is at that time. It’s coming soon as a future fight for sure,” he said.

Up next, don’t miss ONE Fight Night 5: De Ridder v Malykhin on Saturday, 3 December, at the Mall of Asia Arena, Manila. Tickets can be purchased at https://smtickets.com/events/view/11438.

Exuberant Saudi Arabia fans spilled out of Lusail Stadium in song and dance after their side defeated the Goliath of their group, Argentina, in their opening 2022 World Cup match on Tuesday (November 22).

The win is already being called one of the biggest shock upsets in World Cup history as the Saudis topped Lionel Messi and company 2-1.

Saudi Arabia fans shouted, “where’s Messi” and “they can’t look us in the eye,” as they made their way out of the stadium and into the streets of the city of Lusail, immediately north of the capital Doha.

Argentina fans, on the other hand, were in a state of disbelief as they turned their attention to the remaining matches in the group phase against Mexico and Poland.

On his fifth and final quest for the only major trophy to elude him, the 35-year-old Messi scored a 10th minute penalty in a dominant first half display where he and Lautaro Martinez also had three goals disallowed for offside.

But Saudi Arabia, the second-lowest ranked team in the tournament after Ghana, threw caution to the wind at the start of the second half, charging at Argentina’s defence in front of a frenzied 88,012 crowd.

Saleh Al-Shehri squeezed in a low shot in the 48th minute while Salem Al-Dawsari curled in a scorching strike from the edge of the penalty area in the 53rd minute to leave Argentina and Messi looking utterly shell-shocked in the Group C opener.

The result revived old question marks over Argentina’s defence and broke their amazing 36-match undefeated run. That stopped them from matching the international record of 37 games unbeaten held by Italy.

It also marred Messi’s achievement of becoming the first Argentine to score in four World Cups on his 20th appearance in the tournament. Only Maradona has played more games for Argentina at the World Cup, 21 in all.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

THE NATION

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo will leave with immediate effect, the Premier League team said on Tuesday (November 21), marking a bitter end to the Portugal captain’s second spell at Old Trafford after he said he felt betrayed by the club.

An explosive interview with TalkTV this month – in which Ronaldo also said he did not respect manager Erik ten Hag – had put him on shaky ground at the club he rejoined in August 2021 after winning eight major trophies with them from 2003-2009.

United said last week they would address Ronaldo’s comments only after establishing the complete facts and added last Friday (November 18) that they had initiated “appropriate steps” in response.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect. The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future,” United said in a statement.

“Everyone at United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”

Last month, Ten Hag said Ronaldo had refused to come on as a substitute against Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, when the forward walked down the tunnel with a few minutes of the game remaining after being put on the bench.

The 37-year-old was then not part of the squad that faced Chelsea the following Saturday before returning to the fold.

Ronaldo later said in the interview he regretted leaving early against Spurs but added his decision to walk off came because he felt “provoked” by Ten Hag.

Ronaldo said in a statement on Tuesday that he loved the club and the fans.

“… That will never ever change,” he added. “However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge. I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future.”

Manchester United owners consider selling club

THE NATION

Manchester United said on Tuesday (November 22) it was commencing a process to explore strategic alternatives, including a new investment or a potential sale, 17 years after the American Glazer family bought the English Premier League soccer club.

The Glazer family is working with financial advisers on the process, which could lead to a partial sale of the Old Trafford club or investments including stadium and infrastructure redevelopment, the club said in a statement.

Manchester United fans have been clamouring for a change of ownership and the Glazers have been the target of intense criticism as the team have gone five years without winning a trophy. The last silverware they won was the Europa League and League Cup back in 2017.

“As we seek to continue building on the club’s history of success, the board has authorized a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives,” Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer, executive co-chairmen and directors of United, said in the statement.

“We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future,” the statement said.

In August, British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe had expressed interest in buying United, Reuters reported. At the time, Elon Musk had also joked about planning to buy the club.

The owners are under pressure with United sitting fifth in the Premier League halfway through the season, which has been suspended because of the current Qatar World Cup.

Manchester United shares jumped as much as 20% after Sky News first reported on the sale process, giving the club a market capitalisation of $2.6 billion.

The company was worth $2.5 billion at the close of U.S. trading on Tuesday. At it’s peak as a public company, it had a market capitalisation of $4.3 billion in 2018.

Also on Tuesday, the club said that star striker Cristiano Ronaldo will leave with immediate effect, marking a bitter end to the Portugal captain’s second spell at Old Trafford after he said he felt betrayed by the club.

The Glazers bought the club for 790 million pounds ($939.07 million) in 2005 in a highly leveraged deal which has been criticised for loading debt onto the club.

United has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 2012, when the Glazers sold 10% of their holding via the listing and have sold more shares since.

The Raine Group is acting as financial adviser and Latham & Watkins LLP is the legal adviser to Manchester United.

Rothschild and Co. is acting as financial adviser to the Glazer family shareholders.

Among the fan protests against the Glazers was one in May 2021 that forced the postponement of a home match against Liverpool, one of the club’s biggest rivals. It was the first Premier League match to be postponed because of a protest.

United and Liverpool were among a group of big clubs that said they wanted to establish a European Super League in April 2021 but then withdrew, partly because of objections from many fans in England.

Liverpool are also “exploring a sale” according to club chairman Tom Werner. In May 2022, Chelsea Football Club was sold to a consortium led by an investment group fronted by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital for $3.2 billion (2.5 billion pounds).

United finished sixth last season in their worst Premier League campaign in terms of points earned, failing to qualify for the lucrative European Champions League competition.

They won the last of their record 20 top-flight league titles in 2013, the year the great Alex Ferguson stepped down as manager after more than 26 years in charge.

World’s first hybrid meat innovation centre to open in S’pore next year

World’s first hybrid meat innovation centre to open in S’pore next year

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

In a couple of years, consumers will get to try pulled pork and dumplings made by mixing cell-based meat with plant-based proteins, after an alternative novel meat innovation centre opens in the city-state in the second half of 2023.

The hybrid meat innovation centre – said to be the world’s first – is a tie-up between Dutch cultivated pork company Meatable and local plant-based butcher Love Handle.

Hybrid meat refers to a newer type of alternative protein where plant-based meat, animal cells and even fermented edible microbes or algae are mixed to form a fusion protein product. This takes the optimal properties of each alternative to enhance the final hybrid product’s taste, texture and nutrition, said Ken Kuguru, Love Handle’s co-founder and chief executive.

“Picture the marbling on a steak or a layered roast pork belly. Today’s plant-based options cannot create layers or variety, but by combining plant and cell bases, we can create new innovations,” he said. “Plant-based meat… sometimes lacks the same meaty texture or the nutritional profile that consumers are looking for in traditional meat, whereas cell-based meat is currently too expensive and not ready to be commercialised.”

But the hybrid meat the two companies are looking at differs from the plant-based ingredients, spices and herbs that currently play a supporting role in making cell-cultured meat dishes complete. For instance, the cell-based chicken nuggets by Californian company Eat Just – approved for sale in Singapore in 2020 – comprise about 75 per cent cultivated chicken and 25% plant-based ingredients to help with the nugget’s structure.

Instead of acting as supportive or filler ingredients in cell-based meatplant-based foods will have a key role in hybrid products.

By 2024, Meatable and Love Handle are aiming to have hybrid meat items such as pork belly, meatballs, cold cuts and patties on the menus of local restaurants. By 2025, they hope the items will reach supermarket shelves.

The new innovation centre will have a kitchen and lab fitted with high-tech equipment suitable to make hybrid meat and plant-based products. These include industrial blenders, mixers, emulsification equipment and tools to analyse food texture.

The US$6-million (216.6 million baht) innovation centre will also act as a showroom where consumers and eatery owners will be able to taste the fusion meats. A retail space will also be set up at the centre, said Meatable in a statement last week.

The centre and Meatable’s expansion into Singapore will create more than 50 new jobs in the city-state in the coming years, which include cell and food biologists, said the company’s chief commercial officer Caroline Wilschut, who did not reveal the location of the centre.

Meatable’s cell-cultivation technology involves a genetic intervention that converts stem cells taken from a piglet’s umbilical cord into fat or muscle cells, two cell types found in conventional meat. Those cells are then multiplied to form masses of tissue in bioreactors.

With ambitions to have its slaughter-free pork land on menus here by 2024, the Dutch company is currently in advanced discussions with the Singapore Food Agency as it seeks regulatory approval, said Wilschut. As of October, Singapore had approved seven novel food products from five companies.

The new centre will also have space for local plant-based start-ups to help them commercialise their products. Wilschut added that the hybrid option also makes business sense for the small and niche-cultivated meat ecosystem. Tapping the larger plant-based sector, which is already in the market, will help the company reach customers faster.

Local cultivated meat start-ups said the innovation centre will be beneficial. Sandhya Sriram, group chief executive and founder of cultivated seafood and meat company Shiok Meats, noted that most start-ups will launch a hybrid product. Shiok Meats’ first dish prototype in 2019 was “siew mai” made with cell-based shrimp and plant-based pork.

Ong Shujian, co-founder of alternative protein company Ants Innovate, said: “We see the cultivated meat industry gradually learning from the innovations and achievements of the plant-based and precision fermentation industry. This new centre can potentially be a blessing to Ants Innovate and the entire industry by lowering the borders between cultivated, plant-based, fermentation and other proteins such as insects.”

An exhibition of lacquer art at The Peninsula Bangkok seeks to promote the cultural value of ancient Thai art and provide visitors with an immersive artistic experience.

The Peninsula Bangkok welcomes art lovers to discover the vanishing traditional lacquer-art technique of Lai Kammalor, with a special installation by acclaimed local artist and associate professor Niroj Jarungjitvittawat.

The exhibited works, collectively titled “Sati” (a Buddhist term meaning mindfulness or consciousness), have been commissioned as part of the hotel’s artist in residence programme, which is a collaboration with up and coming local artists to offer hotel guests “uniquely immersive artistic experiences”.

Lai Kammalor is a centuries-old painting technique that dates back to the Kingdom of Siam during the Ayutthaya period. The technique employs lacquer, gold leaf and powdered tempera to create elaborately patterned designs. These were used to adorn doors, windows, partitions and cabinetry in many of the country’s grandest historic palaces and temples, including Bangkok’s Grand Palace.

Niroj has made it his personal mission to preserve this distinctive artistic tradition through his own works.

“My dedication to Lai Kammalor goes beyond simply wanting to introduce this ancient Thai method to modern-day art enthusiasts or to my students,” said Niroj, who teaches art at Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin.

“It is my way of promoting higher cultural values embodied in the approach – goodness, faith, truth – to viewers around the world.”

For The Peninsula Bangkok general manager Joseph Sampermans, the Sati exhibition offers guests a sort of “deeply engaging, culturally relevant art experience” that the hotel seeks to share with the artist-in-residence programme.

“Installations like associate professor Niroj’s fulfill an important purpose,” Sampermans said. “Not only do they surround our guests with exquisitely beautiful artworks and introduce them to local creators, they also connect our visitors with the vibrant culture of our home city and our home country.”

Sati is on display at The Peninsula Bangkok’s mezzanine floor and artist studio until December 30. Both hotel guests and outside visitors are welcome to see the exhibition.

Who’s to say that the digital age and spiritual belief cannot go hand in hand? Thailand has been known as a buddhist country to the extent that it has been stated so in its constitution.

Buddhism followers in Thailand have also been known to collect and trade holy totems known as amulets or phra-krueng (พระเครื่อง) in the native tongue. Each amulet is mostly made to be a resemblance of late famous monks in the past. It is held in a strong spiritual belief that carrying and worshiping the amulets will enhance the luck of the owners, which different amulets are believed to enhance luck in different aspects e.g. wealth, relationship and health. The belief regarding the amulet has been passed down from generations to generations of Thai Buddhists, which, in turn, created markets to trade and sell amulets.

ENNXO, Thai online classified ads platform, sees a growing market of people buying and selling amulets online and decides to join in. As we’re in the online era, ENNXO believes that the same can also be done with the amulet and spiritual totems market as well. Since the start of the pandemic, COVID-19, the platform said it has seen a massive growth in the online amulet category on its platform. The platform states that, on the recent trend, customers are searching for the amulets that will bring one fortune or luck based on one’s birthdate (day of the week). For example, if you’re born on Monday and carry some specific amulets, it is believed that it’ll bring you more fortunes than holding some other amulets.

Monday

People born on Monday are believed to be humbled and loved by people; however, they tend to overthink the situation and can be easily swayed if not careful. It is believed that carrying an amulet that has a resemblance of a long-ear monk (phra-hoo-yarn or พระหูยาน in the native tongue) will help mitigate the downside.

24% of medium-size businesses ready to use pirated software to cut costs: Kaspersky

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022

Twenty-four per cent of companies with 50 to 999 employees are ready to use pirated business software to decrease IT spending, the latest Kaspersky report reveals.

Among small businesses (less than 50 employees), only 8% are willing to take the step, it said.

Opting for pirated software can seriously affect corporate cyber safety, since adversaries actively distribute malicious files under the guise of most used software, Kaspersky warned.

According to Kaspersky Security Network (KSN), in just eight months the total number of users who encountered malware and unwanted software masquerading as the most popular software products for small and medium businesses was 9,685.

In general, 4,525 unique malicious or potentially unwanted files were spread via unofficially distributed (including pirated) SMB-related software.

The Kaspersky study aims to explore which crisis management tactics business leaders find most successful, and how some steps can seriously affect a company’s cyber resilience. Safe measures such as seeking lower-cost contractors and adopting free alternatives of usual software are most popular with the respondents, gaining 41% and 32% respectively, but 15% of surveyed business leaders would replace their software with a pirated version to cut costs.

As for the type of programs respondents believe they could replace with hacked copies, the majority chose project management, marketing and sales software – 41% even agree to use a pirated cybersecurity software.

24% of medium-size businesses ready to use pirated software to cut costs: Kaspersky

“A lack of resources is a common situation for small and medium businesses but use of a pirated or hacked software should be completely excluded if an organization values its safety, reputation and income. Pirated copies of software usually come with Trojans and miners and do not contain the fixes or patches released by developers to close vulnerabilities that might be exploited by cybercriminals. Official free alternatives are much better options for those who need to save money on IT,” – comments Alexander Shlychkov, Product Marketing Lead at Kaspersky

To avoid data leakage and financial losses caused by infected software installation, implement the following Kaspersky’s recommendations:

•    Make sure your employees use standard accounts without admin rights. That will prevent them from accidentally installing a Trojan mistaken for productivity software.

•    You can use free security solutions. They usually have fewer functions than paid products but still might be very helpful. Choose a solution based on the independent tests’ results, and download it directly from the developer’s site.

•    To avoid paying hidden miner electricity bills, try to constantly monitor the efficiency of your device. If your gadget is slowing down, overheats and makes a lot of noise even when no one is using it, someone might have installed a miner on the device which is overloading the processor and video card. Use a security solution that detects not only malicious programs but also potentially unwanted instalments.

•    Update your operating system, security software, browser and all the programs you work with as soon as a new update comes out.

•    Implement regular backups of important files in a cloud service and on alternative hardware. That will allow you to have a copy even if ransomware encrypts your data. A security solution with remediation feature will let you roll back actions performed by malware in the operating system, delivering protection against cryptolockers.

More recommendations on how to protect your business with a limited budget are available on a dedicated Kaspersky Low Budget Hub.
